A lability criterion is developed for dynamic metal binding by colloidal ligands with convective diffusion as the dominant mode of mass transport. Scanned stripping chronopotentiometric measurements of Pb(II) and Cd(II) binding by carboxylated latex core-shell particles were in good agreement with the predicted values. The dynamic features of metal ion binding by these particles illustrate that the conventional approach of assuming a smeared-out homogeneous ligand distribution overestimates the lability of a colloidal ligand system. Due to the nature of the spatial distribution of the binding sites, the change in lability of a metal species with changing ligand concentration depends on whether the ligand concentration is varied via manipulation of the pH (degree of protonation) or via the particle concentration. In the former case the local ligand density varies, whereas in the latter case it is constant. This feature provides a useful diagnostic tool for the presence of geometrically constrained binding sites.

We investigate the dynamic nature of metal speciation in colloidal dispersions using a recently proposed theory [J.P. Pinheiro, M. Minor, H.P. Van Leeuwen, Langmuir, 21 (2005) 8635] for complexing ligands that are situated on the surface of the particles. The new approach effectively modifies the finite rates of association/dissociation of the colloidal metal complexes, thus invoking consideration of the two basic dynamic criteria: the association/dissociation kinetics of the volume complexation reaction (the ‘‘dynamic’’ criterion), and the interfacial flux of free metal to a macroscopic surface due to dissociation of complex species (the ‘‘lability’’ criterion). We demonstrate that the conventional approach for homogeneous systems that assume a smeared-out ligand distribution, overestimates both the dynamics and the lability of metal complexes when applied to colloidal ligands. It is also shown that the increase of lability with increasing particle radius, as expected for a homogeneous solution, is moderated for spherical microelectrodes and practically eliminated for planar electrodes.

This study probes the molecular interactions between model drugs and poloxamers that facilitate dissolution rate improvements using solid dispersions. Ibuprofen and ketoprofen solid dispersions were prepared at different mole ratios using poloxamers 407 and 188. The carbonyl stretching vibration of the ibuprofen dimer shifted to higher wavenumber in the infrared spectra of 2:1 drug:carrier mole ratio solid dispersions, indicating disruption of the ibuprofen dimer concomitant with hydrogen bond formation between the drug and carrier. Solid dispersions with mole ratios >2:1 drug:carrier (up to 29:1) showed both ibuprofen hydrogen-bonded to the poloxamer, and excess drug present as dimers. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed these findings with no evidence of crystalline drug in 2:1 mole ratio systems whereas higher drug loadings retained crystalline ibuprofen. Similar results were found with ketoprofen-poloxamer solid dispersions. Thermal analysis of ibuprofen-poloxamer 407 solid dispersions and their resultant phase diagram suggested solid solutions and a eutectic system were formed, depending on drug loading. Dissolution studies showed fastest release from the solid solutions; dissolution rates from solid solutions were 12-fold greater than the dissolution of ibuprofen powder whereas the eutectic system gave a 6-fold improvement over the powder. When designing solid dispersions to improve the delivery of poorly-water soluble drugs, the nature of drug:carrier interactions, which are governed by the stochiometry of the composition, can affect the dissolution rate improvement.

Numerical simulations are presented of the ion distribution functions seen by middle-altitude spacecraft in the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) and cusp regions when reconnection is, or has recently been, taking place at the equatorial magnetopause. From the evolution of the distribution function with time elapsed since the field line was opened, both the observed energy/observation-time and pitch-angle/energy dispersions are well reproduced. Distribution functions showing a mixture of magnetosheath and magnetospheric ions, often thought to be a signature of the LLBL, are found on newly opened field lines as a natural consequence of the magnetopause effects on the ions and their flight times. In addition, it is shown that the extent of the source region of the magnetosheath ions that are detected by a satellite is a function of the sensitivity of the ion instrument . If the instrument one-count level is high (and/or solar-wind densities are low), the cusp ion precipitation detected comes from a localised region of the mid-latitude magnetopause (around the magnetic cusp), even though the reconnection takes place at the equatorial magnetopause. However, if the instrument sensitivity is high enough, then ions injected from a large segment of the dayside magnetosphere (in the relevant hemisphere) will be detected in the cusp. Ion precipitation classed as LLBL is shown to arise from the low-latitude magnetopause, irrespective of the instrument sensitivity. Adoption of threshold flux definitions has the same effect as instrument sensitivity in artificially restricting the apparent source region.

NASA's Dynamics Explorer (DE) mission was designed to study the coupling between the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere and neutral thermosphere1. One area of major interest is the outflow of ionospheric plasma into the magnetosphere, the scale and significance of which is only now becoming apparent with the advent of mass-resolving, low-energy ion detectors. Here we compare observations of ion flows in the polar magnetosphere, made by the retarding ion mass spectrometer (RIMS)2 on DE1, with those made simultaneously in the topside ionosphere by the ion drift meter (IDM)3 on the lower-altitude DE2 spacecraft. The results show the dayside auroral ionosphere to be a significant and highly persistent source of plasma for the magnetosphere. The upwelling ionospheric ions are spatially dispersed, according to both their energy and mass, by the combined actions of the geomagnetic field and the dawn-to-dusk convection electric field, in an effect analogous to the operation of an ion mass spectrometer.

The aim of this work was to study the glass transition, the glass transition of the maximally freeze-concentrated fractions, the ice melting and the gelatinization phenomenon in dispersions of starch prepared using glycerol- water solutions. The starch concentration was maintained constant at 50 g cassava starch/100 g starch dispersions, but the concentration of the glycerol solutions was variable (C-g= 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mass/mass%). The phase transitions of these dispersions were studied by calorimetric methods, using a conventional differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a more sensitive equipment (micro-DSC). Apparently, in the glycerol diluted solutions (20 and 40%), the glycerol molecules interacted strongly with the glucose molecules of starch. While in the more concentrated glycerol domains (C-g> 40%), the behaviour was controlled by migration of water molecules from the starch granules, due to a hypertonic character of glycerol, which affected all phase transitions.

The synthetic lipid 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-3-phosphoglycerol (DMPG), when dispersed in water/NaCl exhibits a complex phase behavior caused by its almost unlimited swelling in excess water. Using deuterium ((2)H)- and phosphorus ((31)P)-NMR we have studied the molecular properties of DMPG/water/NaCl dispersions as a function of lipid and NaCl concentration. We have measured the order profile of the hydrophobic part of the lipid bilayer with deuterated DMPG while the orientation of the phosphoglycerol headgroup was deduced from the (31)P NMR chemical shielding anisotropy. At temperatures > 30 degrees C we observe well-resolved (2)H- and (31)P NMR spectra not much different from other liquid crystalline bilayers. From the order profiles it is possible to deduce the average length of the flexible fatty acyl chain. Unusual spectra are obtained in the temperature interval of 20-25 degrees C, indicating one or several phase transitions. The most dramatic changes are seen at low lipid concentration and low ionic strength. Under these conditions and at 25 degrees C, the phosphoglycerol headgroup rotates into the hydrocarbon layer and the hydrocarbon chains show larger flexing motions than at higher temperatures. The orientation of the phosphoglycerol headgroup depends on the bilayer surface charge and correlates with the degree of dissociation of DMPG-Na(+). The larger the negative surface charge, the more the headgroup rotates toward the nonpolar region.

Statistical properties of a two-dimensional ideal dispersion of polydisperse micelles are derived by analyzing the convergence properties of a sum rule set by mass conservation. Internal micellar degrees of freedom are accounted for by a microscopic model describing small displacements of the constituting amphiphiles with respect to their equilibrium positions. The transfer matrix (TM) method is employed to compute internal micelle partition function. We show that the conditions under which the sum rule is saturated by the largest eigenvalue of the TM determine the value of amphiphile concentration above which the dispersion becomes highly polydisperse and micelle sizes approach a Schultz distribution. We have used isothermal titration calorimetry to investigate the vesicle-to-micelle transition in dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) and chloride (DODAC) vesicle dispersions induced by the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C12E8) at room temperature. Small and giant unilamellar vesicles were prepared by sonication and without sonication, respectively, of the pure cationic surfactants at low concentrations in water. The titration of 1.0 mM DODAX (X = Cl- and Br-) by a concentrated micellar solution of C12E8 shows that the enthalpy of interaction (DeltaH(obs)) of C12E8 in micellar form with DODAX is always endothermic. The titration curves are understood on the basis of superposition of the enthalpies of partitioning of C12E8 into the bilayer, of micelle formation and of vesicle-to-micelle transformation. The enthalpy, DeltaH(obs), initially increases owing to the incorporation of C12E8 into the vesicle bilayer until the C12E8/DODAX saturation ratio (R-sat) is reached, then DeltaH(obs) decreases, in different ways for DODAB and DODAC, owing to degradation of vesicles and formation of mixed micelles and intermediary structures up to the C12E8/DODAX solubilization ratio, R-sol. Above R-sol only mixed micelles exist. The surfactant solubilization takes place in three stages. All the critical ratios are lower for DODAB than for DODAC, meaning that C12E8 solubilizes more strongly in DODAB for example, R-sat is 0.8 for DODAB and 1.2 for DODAC. Sonication has no significant effect on the transition.

Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) dispersions obtained by simply mixing the amphiphile in water, and by bath-sonication, were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) of stearic acids and their methyl ester derivatives, labeled at the 5th and 16th carbons of the acyl chain. The ESR spectra indicate that the non-sonicated dispersions are formed mainly by one population of DODAB vesicles, either in the gel (T < T-m) or in the liquid-crystalline (T > T-m) state. Around T-m there is a co-existence of the two phases, with a thermal hysteresis of about 3.2 degreesC. In sonicated DODAB dispersions, spin labels indicate two different environments even for temperatures far below T-m: one similar to that obtained with non-sonicated samples, a gel phase, and another one in the liquid-crystalline state. The fluid phase domain present below T-m could correspond to either the periphery of bilayer fragments, reported to be present in sonicated DODAB dispersions, or to high curvature vesicles. The thermotropic phase behavior of cationic liposomes in mixtures of two of the most investigated liposome-forming double-chain lipids, dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), turbidity, and Nile Red fluorescence. The dispersions were investigated at 1.0 mM total surfactant concentration and varying DODAB and DDAB concentrations. The gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperatures (T-m) of neat DDAB and DODAB in aqueous dispersions are around 16 and 43 degrees C, respectively, and we aim to investigate the T-m behavior for mixtures of these cationic lipids. Overall, DDAB reduces the T-m of DODAB, the transition temperature depending on the DDAB content, but the T-m of DDAB is roughly independent of the DODAB concentration. Both DSC and fluorescence measurements show that, within the mixture, at room temperature (ca. 22 degrees C), the DDAB-rich liposomes are in the liquid-crystalline state, whereas the DODAB-rich liposomes are in the gel state. DSC results point to a higher affinity of DDAB for DODAB liposomes than the reverse, resulting in two populations of mixed DDAB/DODAB liposomes with distinctive phase behavior. Fluorescence measurements also show that the presence of a small amount of DODAB in DDAB-rich liposomes causes a pronounced effect in Nile Red emission, due to the increase in liposome size, as inferred from turbidity results.

Blends of polyaniline (PAni) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been produced using core-shell particle synthesis, which is advantageous because it allows changing surface-related properties of PMMA with relatively small amounts of PAW and without the use of organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements indicated that the deposition of pollyaniline seems to alter the regular shape of the primary acrylic latex particles. The coverage of PMMA particles by PAW was confirmed by FTIR measurements, where distinct data were obtained from the transmission and diffuse reflectance modes, since the latter is surface sensitive. The zeta potential, which is also a surface-related property, increased with the contents of PAW, as the shells probably became protonated with PAW in the emeraldine salt form. Coverage with PAW did not affect the thermal bulk properties of the PMMA shells.

Dynamic light scattering has been used to investigate sonicated aqueous dispersions of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB). The hydrodynamic radius (R-H) of the scattering particles and the mean scattering intensity (I) have been monitored as functions of the DODAB concentration and temperature (T). In the dilute regime, the relaxation time distribution of the sonicated dispersion of DODAB is bimodal with the slow mode dominating the distribution. The slow and fast modes are respectively characteristic of vesicles and bilayer fragments with R-H values of 22 and 8.5 nm (25 degrees C) and 20 and 6 nm (50 degrees C), respectively. The total scattered intensity initially decreased with temperature up to 45 degrees C (T-c), above which it was constant; identical behavior was observed for the slow mode intensity, but the fast mode intensity was constant with temperature change, showing that T-c is a property of the vesicles and not of the bilayer fragments. At T-c the slow vesicle mode becomes narrower whereas the fast fragment mode shows no change. on aging, the dispersion showed a slow transition from bimodal to a rather broad single-modal relaxation time distribution. The corresponding R-H was 33.8 nm when measured 10 months after preparation. These results suggest that aqueous sonicated dispersions of DODAB are metastable.
