A facile entry to macrocyclic disulfides: an efficient synthesis of redox-switched crown ethers

An interesting sulfur transfer reaction with benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate has been used efficiently for the synthesis of macrocyclic disulfides. This methodology has been extended to a high-yield synthesis of ''redox-switched'' crown ethers which have potential application for selective ion transport across liquid membranes.

Photoinduced electron transfer in zinc porphyrin-crown ether supramolecule with Eu3+ electron acceptor in crown void

Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reactions in the zinc porphyrin-crown ether (ZnPCE) supramolecule, in which one crown ether moiety containing Eu3+ as electron acceptor is covalently linked to zinc porphyrin (ZnP), were studied by flash photolysis. In methanol solutions, highly efficient charge separation occurs via intramolecular ET from (ZnP)-Zn-3 to Eu3+ encapsulated in the crown ether void (k(1) = (3 +/- 1) X 10(3) s(-1)) and intramolecular ET from 3ZnP to uncomplexed Eu2+ (k(2) = (2.5 +/- 0.5) X 10(3) s(-1)). Intermolecular ET from Eu2+ escaped from the crown ether void to ZnP.+ (k(tau) = (4.3 +/- 0.7) X 10(8) M(-1) s(-1)) seems to be the main pathway of charge recombination.

Rapid purification of tRNA(Lys) from rat liver

Fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) system using Mono Q (HR 5/5) anion-exchange column chromatography followed by highly cross-linked urea-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (urea-PAGE) was used for the purification of lysine-specific tRNA (tRNA(Lys)) from rat liver. Crude tRNA from rat liver was fractionated with a linear gradient of NaCl (0.3-0.8 M) in triethanolamine-HCl buffer, pH 4.5, and the activity of tRNA(Lys) was found to elute between 0.51 and 0.57 M NaCl. Using this concentration range of NaCl, tRNA(Lys) was refractionated on the same column with a shallow gradient, where a single peak of tRNA(Lys) activity was obtained. tRNA(Lys)-rich fractions recovered from the second run were electrophoretically separated on 16% polyacrylamide-7 M urea gel into one major band and three minor bands. The major band showed a specific activity of 997 pmols/A260 U for tRNALys with a 43-fold purification and approximately 17% recovery. The minor bands displayed negligible or no activity for lysine. tRNA(Lys) obtained by this method was found to be homogeneous by competitive aminoacylation. The advantages of FPLC followed by urea-PAGE in the purification of an amino acid-specific tRNA over conventional column chromatography are discussed.

Synthesis and cation binding properties of new bile acid-based crown ethers

A series of bile acid-based crown ethers (7a-c,12 and 13) were easily constructed from readily available precursors. Measurement of association constants (K-a) with alkali metal picrates in CHCl3 showed that azacrown ethers 7a-c and Chola-Cuowns 12 and 13 show greater binding towards Rb+ and K+. The presence of the aromatic moieties showed subtle changes in the binding properties. Insight II minimized structures show very different conformations of aromatic units in 7a-b and 13.

Growth of ZnO Nanotetrapods with Hexagonal Crown

ZnO nanotetrapods with hexagonal crown were synthesized on a silicon wafer by vapor transport process at a low temperature of 630 °C and normal pressure without the presence of catalysts. The results demonstrated that the as-synthesized products with slender legs and regular hexagonal crown are single crystal with wurtzite structure and preferentially grow up along 001 direction. Photoluminescence spectra revealed that the green emission originated from oxygen vacancies overwhelmed that of the near-band-edge ultraviolet peak, which suggests the peculiar-shaped nanotetrapods may have potential applications in multichannel nano-optoelectronic devices.

The Crown-of-Thorns starfish Acanthaster planci (Linne') in Ceylon

The Crown-of-Thorns starfish Acanthaster planci is a predator of coral and has been responsible for the widespread destruction of coral reefs. In Sri Lanka this starfish was first reported by Clarke in 1915. Recently skin-divers reported that Acanthaster planci was present in very large numbers in the coastal waters off Trincomalee, especially on the coral formations around Pigeon Island. It is well known that the multiplication of the starfish to plague proportions is a serious threat to the coral reef formations round the Island. If it were allowed to continue its depredations the entire coral reef belt round the Island might be destroyed in a short time. The monsoon waves would then convert the dead coral to rubble. In the absence of a barrier against the advancing waves during the monsoon it would also lead to serious erosion of the shoreline. The coral reef fish would also disappear with the destruction of the coral formations. On account of these considerations it was decided to conduct a survey of the Crown-of-Thorns starfish in eastern coastal waters in order to estimate the magnitude of the population of the starfish in these waters.

The demonstration of chemosensory food detection in Hymenocera picta Dana (Decapoda, Caridea), a proposed predator of the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci (L)

Hymenocera picta, the painted shrimp, is a possible predator of A canthaster planci. the crown-of-thorns starfish. H. picta detects food by chemical cues alone and visual cues play no part in the initial location of prey. The presence of food in the water causes the shrimp to become more active, and distance chemoreceptors are probably present in the antennules of the shrimp. Extract of A. planci has statistically similar attractive powers to an extract of Linckia multifora, the starfish supplied as food to the shrimps. The painted shrimp was not attracted to fish extract (Chaetodon sp.) and may respond only to starfish. It is suggested that although H. picta is able to kill and feed on small juvenile A. planci. it is probably an ineffective predator against larger adult Crown-of-thorns starfish.

Ectopic Six3 expression in the dragon eye goldfish

For goldfish (Carassius auratus), there are many varieties with different eye phenotypes due to artificial selection and adaptive evolution. Dragon eye is a variant eye characterized by a large-size eyeball protruding out of the socket similar to the eye of dragon in Chinese legends. In this study, anatomical structure of the goldfish dragon eye was compared with that of the common eye, and a stretching of the retina was observed in the enlarged dragon eye. Moreover, the homeobox-containing transcription factor Six3 cDNAs were cloned from the two types of goldfish, and the expression patterns were analyzed in both normal eye and dragon eye goldfish. No amino acid sequence differences were observed between the two deduced peptides, and the expression pattern of Six3 protein in dragon eye is quite similar to common eye during embryogenesis, but from 2 days after hatching, ectopic Six3 expression began to occur in the dragon eye, especially in the outer nuclear layer cells. With eye development, more predominant Six3 distribution was detected in the outer nuclear layer cells of dragon eye than that of normal eye, and fewer cell-layers in outer nuclear layer were observed in dragon eye retina than in normal eye retina. Determination of lead using a poly(vinyl chloride)-based crown ether membrane

A poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)-based membrane of 15-crown-5 exhibits a good response for lead(II) ions over a wide concentration range. The response time of the sensor is 30 s and the membrane can be used for more than four months without observing any divergence. The selectivity of the sensor is comparable with those reported for other such electrodes. It was possible to determine lead in polluted waters using this electrode assembly.
