This thesis, which is entitled Registration discourse of subjectivity homo affective in G Magazine, is proposed to describe / interpret modes of subjectivity that is set in the discourse of homo affective confessions, recorded in letters addressed to G Magazine. The study is based on the theories of Discourse Analysis French, with a focus in the discussions Foucaultian remarkably discursive practices that produce meanings about the processes of subjectivity and sexuality. Methodologically, the research is of appreciative/qualitative character and falls in the field of Applied Linguistics (LA), at a press that the historical and cultural reality of the subject, establishing dialogues with many other fields of knowledge, which deal of the subject matter of speech and sexuality. Data analysis indicates that the magazine G Magazine works as a discursive space, where individuals on condition that homosexual, take it as the place that it gives security to talk to you, it's worrying, because the nature of the journal it suggests a belonging to the same discursive formation - that of homo affective . Thus, some of which are felt constructed for the investigation of the letters selected for this study showed that the forms of subjectivity of such homo affective are emerging in the game of the bans, the other is that as a subject of sexuality and to materialize in operation the confession. These homo affective, in a gesture of incessant registration of alternatives to be subject to its own truth of their sexuality, to seek his party in the case, the psychologist, a referral, a "light" that can guide them in an attempt to get rid of the forms of to subject. Ao longo do século XIX, os governos municipais proibiram determinados usos, tais como a permanência e circulação de animais em Belém por meio de “Códigos de Posturas”. Mesmo após a Intendência de Antonio Lemos (1897-1911), período de apogeu da economia gomífera e consolidação do regime republicano, as proibições permaneceram, e a elas foram adicionadas medidas e ações práticas como a criação de uma Guarda Municipal. A presente dissertação investiga como o poder público queria disciplinar os moradores da capital paraense no uso de animais e resultados práticos disso, focando a análise em três tipos de proibições: maltratar os animais de carga, soltar animais de gado de qualquer espécie pelas ruas e praças, e ter cães sem licença municipal. Para tanto, eu investiguei fontes como os “Códigos de Posturas”, “Relatórios dos Intendentes Municipais”, jornais, literatura e imagens. Analisei esta documentação utilizando conceitos como o de natureza e de civilização, na perspectiva da História Ambiental.

Healthcare, Human Computer Interfaces (HCI), Security and Biometry are the most promising application scenario directly involved in the Body Area Networks (BANs) evolution. Both wearable devices and sensors directly integrated in garments envision a word in which each of us is supervised by an invisible assistant monitoring our health and daily-life activities. New opportunities are enabled because improvements in sensors miniaturization and transmission efficiency of the wireless protocols, that achieved the integration of high computational power aboard independent, energy-autonomous, small form factor devices. Application’s purposes are various: (I) data collection to achieve off-line knowledge discovery; (II) user notification of his/her activities or in case a danger occurs; (III) biofeedback rehabilitation; (IV) remote alarm activation in case the subject need assistance; (V) introduction of a more natural interaction with the surrounding computerized environment; (VI) users identification by physiological or behavioral characteristics. Telemedicine and mHealth [1] are two of the leading concepts directly related to healthcare. The capability to borne unobtrusiveness objects supports users’ autonomy. A new sense of freedom is shown to the user, not only supported by a psychological help but a real safety improvement. Furthermore, medical community aims the introduction of new devices to innovate patient treatments. In particular, the extension of the ambulatory analysis in the real life scenario by proving continuous acquisition. The wide diffusion of emerging wellness portable equipment extended the usability of wearable devices also for fitness and training by monitoring user performance on the working task. The learning of the right execution techniques related to work, sport, music can be supported by an electronic trainer furnishing the adequate aid. HCIs made real the concept of Ubiquitous, Pervasive Computing and Calm Technology introduced in the 1988 by Marc Weiser and John Seeley Brown. They promotes the creation of pervasive environments, enhancing the human experience. Context aware, adaptive and proactive environments serve and help people by becoming sensitive and reactive to their presence, since electronics is ubiquitous and deployed everywhere. In this thesis we pay attention to the integration of all the aspects involved in a BAN development. Starting from the choice of sensors we design the node, configure the radio network, implement real-time data analysis and provide a feedback to the user. We present algorithms to be implemented in wearable assistant for posture and gait analysis and to provide assistance on different walking conditions, preventing falls. Our aim, expressed by the idea to contribute at the development of a non proprietary solutions, driven us to integrate commercial and standard solutions in our devices. We use sensors available on the market and avoided to design specialized sensors in ASIC technologies. We employ standard radio protocol and open source projects when it was achieved. The specific contributions of the PhD research activities are presented and discussed in the following. • We have designed and build several wireless sensor node providing both sensing and actuator capability making the focus on the flexibility, small form factor and low power consumption. The key idea was to develop a simple and general purpose architecture for rapid analysis, prototyping and deployment of BAN solutions. Two different sensing units are integrated: kinematic (3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscopes) and kinetic (foot-floor contact pressure forces). Two kind of feedbacks were implemented: audio and vibrotactile. • Since the system built is a suitable platform for testing and measuring the features and the constraints of a sensor network (radio communication, network protocols, power consumption and autonomy), we made a comparison between Bluetooth and ZigBee performance in terms of throughput and energy efficiency. Test in the field evaluate the usability in the fall detection scenario. • To prove the flexibility of the architecture designed, we have implemented a wearable system for human posture rehabilitation. The application was developed in conjunction with biomedical engineers who provided the audio-algorithms to furnish a biofeedback to the user about his/her stability. • We explored off-line gait analysis of collected data, developing an algorithm to detect foot inclination in the sagittal plane, during walk. • In collaboration with the Wearable Lab – ETH, Zurich, we developed an algorithm to monitor the user during several walking condition where the user carry a load. The remainder of the thesis is organized as follows. Chapter I gives an overview about Body Area Networks (BANs), illustrating the relevant features of this technology and the key challenges still open. It concludes with a short list of the real solutions and prototypes proposed by academic research and manufacturers. The domain of the posture and gait analysis, the methodologies, and the technologies used to provide real-time feedback on detected events, are illustrated in Chapter II. The Chapter III and IV, respectively, shown BANs developed with the purpose to detect fall and monitor the gait taking advantage by two inertial measurement unit and baropodometric insoles. Chapter V reports an audio-biofeedback system to improve balance on the information provided by the use centre of mass. A walking assistant based on the KNN classifier to detect walking alteration on load carriage, is described in Chapter VI.

Road-traffic noise impairs the well-being and health of many people. Motivating car drivers to voluntarily adopt a low-noise driving style (i.e., eco-driving) contributes to the reduction of road-traffic noise, complementary to requirements, bans, and laws. In a field study with employees of a municipality (N = 88), we investigated the effects of an intervention on car drivers’ motivation to prevent road-traffic noise, motivation to practice eco-driving, and driving behavior. The intervention consisted of a leaflet intended to enhance participants’ motivation, a practical eco-driving course, and weekly driving-performance feedbacks. We used a switching-replications design with two intervention groups. In both groups, eco-driving behavior was significantly strengthened by the intervention. The effects on the motivational variables were significant in only one of the groups (however, it should be noted that the average motivation was already relatively high before the intervention). For one of the groups, the study design allowed testing for the effects at an additional follow-up assessment (4 months after the intervention). The results showed that the intervention effect on driving behavior held across this period. The findings of the present research suggest that it is possible to improve car driver’s behavior with regard to a low-noise driving style.

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a well established health hazard, being causally associated to lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. ETS regulations have been developed worldwide to reduce or eliminate exposure in most public places. Restaurants and bars constitute an exception. Restaurants and bar workers experience the highest ETS exposure levels across several occupations, with correspondingly increased health risks. In Mexico, previous exposure assessment in restaurants and bars showed concentrations in bars and restaurants to be the highest across different public and workplaces. Recently, Mexico developed at the federal level the General Law for Tobacco Control restricting indoors smoking to separated areas. AT the local level Mexico City developed the Law for the Protection of Non-smokers Health, completely banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Studies to assess ETS exposure in restaurants and bars, along with potential health effects were required to evaluate the impact of these legislative changes and to set a baseline measurement for future evaluations.^ A large cross-sectional study conducted in restaurants and bars from four Mexican cities was conducted from July to October 2008, to evaluate the following aims: Aim 1) Explore the potential impact of the Mexico City ban on ETS concentrations through comparison of Mexico City with other cities. Aim 2). Explore the association between ETS exposure, respiratory function indicators and respiratory symptoms. Aim 3). Explore the association between ETS exposure and blood pressure and heart rate.^ Three cities with no smoking ban were selected: Colima (11.5% smoking prevalence), Cuernavaca (21.5% smoking prevalence) and Toluca (27.8% smoking prevalence). Mexico City (27.9% smoking prevalence), the only city with a ban at the time of the study, was also selected. Restaurants and bars were randomly selected from municipal records. A goal of 26 restaurants and 26 bars per city was set, 50% of them under 100 m2. Each establishment was visited during the highest occupancy shift, and managers and workers answered to a questionnaire. Vapor-phase nicotine was measured using passive monitors, that were activated at the beginning and deactivated at the end of the shift. Also, workers participated at the beginning and end of the shift in a short physical evaluation, comprising the measurement of Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF), as well as blood pressure and heart rate.^ A total of 371 establishments were invited, 219 agreed to participate for a 60.1% participation rate. In them, 828 workers were invited, 633 agreed to participate for a 76% participation rate. Mexico City had at least 4 times less nicotine compared to any of the other cities. Differences between Mexico City and other cities were not explained by establishment characteristics, such as ventilation or air extraction. However, differences between cities disappeared when ban mechanisms, such as policy towards costumer's smoking, were considered in the models. An association between ETS exposure and respiratory symptoms (cough OR=1.27, 95%CI=1.04, 1.55) and respiratory illness (asthma OR=1.97, 95%CI=1.20, 3.24; respiratory illness OR=1.79, 95%CI=1.10, 2.94) was observed. No association between ETS and phlegm, wheezing or respiratory infections was observed. No association between ETS and any of the spirometric indicators was observed. An association between ETS exposure and increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure at the end of the shift was observed among non-smokers (systolic blood pressure beta=1.51, 95%CI=0.44, 2.58; diastolic blood pressure beta=1.50, 95%CI=0.72, 2.28). The opposite effect was observed in heavy smokers, were increased ETS exposure was associated with lower blood pressure at the end of the shift (systolic blood pressure beta=1.90, 95%CI=-3.57, -0.23; diastolic blood pressure beta=-1.46, 95%CI=-2.72, -0.02). No association in light smokers was observed. No association for heart rate was observed. ^ Results from this dissertation suggest Mexico City's smoking ban has had a larger impact on ETS exposure. Ventilation or air extraction, mechanisms of ETS control suggested frequently by tobacco companies to avoid smoking bans were not associated with ETS exposure. This dissertation suggests ETS exposure could be linked to changes in blood pressure and to increased respiratory symptoms. Evidence derived from this dissertation points to the potential negative health effects of ETS exposure in restaurants and bars, and provides support for the development of total smoking bans in this economic sector. ^

The use of tobacco products ruins the health of millions of people around the world. On average, tobacco users die nearly seven years earlier than non-tobacco users. n1 Cigarette smoking is a particular concern in the developing countries of the Middle East and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region where smoking prevalence is expected to increase. This is due to the tobacco industry's vigorous commercial and marketing activities. n3 Smoking prevalence among physicians is considered to be an effective indicator of a society's readiness to identify the smoking epidemic and its related health diseases. n4 There is a lack of detailed data on the smoking prevalence among healthcare professionals, particularly physicians, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This cross sectional study is the first to address smoking practices among physicians working at the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS); in Dubai, UAE. ^ This study describes the cigarette smoking prevalence among DOHMS Physicians, physician attitudes towards tobacco use and tobacco bans; physician attitudes towards smoking cessation techniques (among smokers and non-smokers); and physician awareness of official anti-smoking policies. Data for the study was collected through the use of an adapted WHO standardized questionnaire, the Global Health Professionals Survey. The questionnaire was administered by the researcher to physicians (n=288) at their work place. Date was analyzed using the SPSS analytic software program. ^ Twelve percent of DOHMS physicians smoked cigarettes. Regardless of smoking status, the majority supported a tobacco ban in hospitals and public places, and a ban on tobacco advertising. There is a significant relationship between physician smoking status and discussing risks of tobacco use (p < 0.05). Non-smoking physicians reported spending more time with patients discussing hazards of smoking (p < 0.01). Non-smokers reported providing more counseling than their smoking colleagues. The majority of DOHMS physicians (63%) reported a lack of knowledge about 5As/ 5Rs. The majority of physicians also reported they are aware of hospital smoking policies that restrict smoking. Regardless of physician smoking status, DOHMS physicians are not very actively involved in smoking cessation activities. This cross sectional study is the first to address smoking programs, policies, and practices among physicians in Dubai, UAE. Findings support the need for increased physical smoking cessation training as well as the development of smoking cessation programs for tobacco control, and programs with a focus on physician participation in reducing tobacco and cigarette use among the general population.^

Nos introducimos en el debate de la ética en el Trabajo Social analizando los documentos de la Federación Internacional de Trabajadores Sociales (FITS), aprobado en Asamblea General (1994): "Declaración Internacional de principios éticos del Trabajo Social" y del que presentará en la próxima Asamblea General del 2004. Estos documentos destacan particularidades acordes al momento histórico. La otra reflexión parte del documento "Principios éticos y políticos para las organizaciones profesionales de Trabajo Social, año 2000 ,elaborado por el Comité de Asociaciones Profesionales de Trabajo Social del MERCOSUR. Desde el contexto de América Latina se sitúa en la ética ciudadana.

Durante el proceso socio-histórico del Trabajo Social como profesión, se han ido configurando espacios de intervención desde las problemáticas sociales emergentes, en donde se inclina, mayormente, por el control, asistencia y focalización de las demandas. Por esta razón, es un desafío para nuestro ejercicio profesional, replantear estas formas, lo que implica un proceso de reconocimiento de otros posibles espacios de intervención, como un aporte a los ya legitimados y “gastados" por los asuntos burocráticos e institucionales. Y tanto reflexionar sobre esta situación, surge como tema de esta tesina el “Arte como espacio alternativo de intervención de problemáticas sociales desde la articulación de diversas disciplinas", estableciendo el siguiente objetivo general: “Reflexionar sobre el Arte como un posible espacio pertinente al Trabajo Social, en donde se articulan diferentes disciplinas desde lo social como de lo artístico". Pero ¿por que el pensar el Arte como un posible espacio de intervención? Porque aunque UD no lo crea, el Arte “tiene en si mismo la potencialidad de transformar lo diferente en singular y valioso, de abrir canales para establecer lazos sociales en torno a las producciones de cada sujeto y de estimular procesos de comunicación e intercambio. En este sentido, los proyectos artístico-culturales pueden constituirse en espacios de participación, capaces de promover el desarrollo de la ciudadanía". Partiendo desde este punto se reflexionará sobre: · Conceptualización del Arte y aportes que produce en la intervención de problemáticas sociales. · Posibilidades de encuentro entre el Trabajo Social y el Arte. · Posibles elementos que pueden generar y determinar la elaboración de esta construcción teórica metodológica. · Multidisciplinariedad y sus aportes en el espacio de intervención social. · Capitales que se ponen en juego dentro del trabajo multidisciplinario.

Este trabajo se propone a partir de interrogatorios que surgieron luego del cursado de la cátedra de Taller III: Abordaje Comunitario y Grupal – Desarrollo Local. Dentro del programa de la materia se toma a la “Mediación" como una temática más del programa, pero no se profundiza sobre ella. Sólo se desarrolla la mediación comunitaria. Creemos que es fundamental encontrar este camino de la mediación frente a que los cambios de la trama social han puesto de manifiesto la necesidad de actualización de la profesión. Además nos interesa la mediación como herramienta metodológica del Trabajo Social para promover conocimiento, juicio crítico y pensamiento complejo. Estamos seguras que el trabajador social debe estar preparado para los cambios, la sociedad se transforma día a día y también los integrantes de la misma, por lo tanto debemos cambiar acompañando el contexto en el que se debe actuar en los días que corren y ajustarse a las necesidades, adoptando estrategias para afrontar los desafíos de esta sociedad cambiante. Una manera de afrontar los conflictos es la "mediación", haciendo de los mismos oportunidades de desarrollo y no de confrontamiento. La Mediación es una herramienta que ayuda a superar los enfrentamientos por el diálogo en la dura posición de defensa de los intereses individuales, intereses comunes que puedan satisfacer.Desterrando la violencia y revalorizando el diálogo. La mediación es herramientas eficaz y de gran ayuda para lograr una convivencia pacífica. La resiliencia, la inteligencia emocional, la exaltación de las virtudes morales que conforman la ética individual, social y profesional han sido las guías que nos han orientado. Retomando esta temática intentamos tomarla como refuerzo de esos conocimientos básicos adquiridos. A partir de la toma de elementos teóricos y metodológicos que permitan investigar la realidad y producir respuestas de conocimiento

This paper introduces a novel method for examining the effects of vertical integration. The basic idea is to estimate the parameters of a vertical entry game. By carefully specifying firms' payoff equations and constructing appropriate tests, it is possible to use estimates on rival profit effects to make inferences about the existence of vertical foreclosure. I estimate the vertical entry model using data from the US generic pharmaceutical industry. The estimates indicate that vertical integration is unlikely to generate anticompetitive foreclosure effects. On the other hand, significant efficiency effects are found to arise from vertical integration. I use the parameter estimates to simulate a policy that bans vertically integrated entry. The simulation results suggest that such a ban is counterproductive; it is likely to reduce entry into smaller markets.

In the mid-long-term after a nuclear accident, the contamination of drinking water sources, fish and other aquatic foodstuffs, irrigation supplies and people?s exposure during recreational activities may create considerable public concern, even though dose assessment may in certain situations indicate lesser importance than for other sources, as clearly experienced in the aftermath of past accidents. In such circumstances there are a number of available countermeasure options, ranging from specific chemical treatment of lakes to bans on fish ingestion or on the use of water for crop irrigation. The potential actions can be broadly grouped into four main categories, chemical, biological, physical and social. In some cases a combination of actions may be the optimal strategy and a decision support system (DSS) like MOIRA-PLUS can be of great help to optimise a decision. A further option is of course not to take any remedial actions, although this may also have significant socio-economic repercussions which should be adequately evaluated. MOIRA-PLUS is designed to allow for a reliable assessment of the long-term evolution of the radiological situation and of feasible alternative rehabilitation strategies, including an objective evaluation of their social, economic and ecological impacts in a rational and comprehensive manner. MOIRA-PLUS also features a decision analysis methodology, making use of multi-attribute analysis, which can take into account the preferences and needs of different types of stakeholders. The main functions and elements of the system are described summarily. Also the conclusions from end-user?s experiences with the system are discussed, including exercises involving the organizations responsible for emergency management and the affected services, as well as different local and regional stakeholders. MOIRAPLUS has proven to be a mature system, user friendly and relatively easy to set up. It can help to better decisionmaking by enabling a realistic evaluation of the complete impacts of possible recovery strategies. Also, the interaction with stakeholders has allowed identifying improvements of the system that have been recently implemented.
