The aim of this paper is to facilitate reflection on the moral merit of practitioners in various contexts. Insight is gained from Aristotelian and Kantian accounts of moral character and an original framework for reflection is presented as an adjunct to ethical theory and principles considered when appraising others. In relation to states of character there is an irreconcilable difference between Kantian (deontic) and Aristotelian (aretaic) conceptions of the nature of full virtue (excellence of character), but at the same time it can be argued that in relation to practice their approaches complement each other. It is also argued that in relation to caring for the vulnerable, Aristotle’s conception of full virtue is more compelling than Kant’s. On the other hand, Kant’s notion of self - serving action is important in nursing and it therefore needs to be considered when reflecting on professional conduct. The conclusion reached is that Aristotelian and Kantian accounts of character appraisal should be used in a combined approach to moral appraisal. This approach draws on the accounts of both philosophers and offers valuable insight into moral character, professional conduct and, in a more formal setting, fitness to practise.

This article offers a replication for Britain of Brown and Heywood's analysis of the determinants of performance appraisal in Australia. Although there are some important limiting differences between our two datasets - the Australia Workplace Industrial Relations Survey (AWIRS) and the Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS) - we reach one central point of agreement and one intriguing shared insight. First, performance appraisal is negatively associated with tenure: where employers cannot rely on the carrot of deferred pay or the stick of dismissal to motivate workers, they will tend to rely more on monitoring, ceteris paribus. Second, employer monitoring and performance pay may be complementary. However, consonant with the disparate results from the wider literature, there is more modest agreement on the contribution of specific human resource management practices, and still less on the role of job control.

Screening for residues of anabolic steroids frequently requires extraction from tissues and fluids before analysis. Chemical procedures for these extractions can be complicated, expensive to perform and not ideal for the simultaneous extraction of analytes with different solubilities. Extraction by multi-immunoaffinity chromatography (MIAC) may be used as an alternative. Samples are passed through a column containing a range of antibodies immobilized on an inert support. The desired analytes are bound to their respective antibodies, washed and then eluted by a suitable solvent. The purified extracts can then be incorporated into the analytical tests, The analytes that can be extracted presently are alpha-nortestosterone, zeranol, trenbolone, diethylstilboestrol, boldenone and dexamethasone. Manually, the MIAC procedure is limited to about six columns per operator but bq automating the process using a robotic sample processor (RSP), 48 columns can be run simultaneously during the day or night. The RSP has also been adapted to transfer extracts and reagents on to ELISA plates. The automated system has proved to be a robust and reliable means of screening large numbers of samples for anabolic agents with minimal manual input

In vitro experiments have shown the PIM1 kinase to have diverse biological roles in cell survival, proliferation and differentiation. In humans, PIM1 is often expressed in both normal and transformed cells. The PIM1 kinase is a true oncogene implicated in early transformation and tumour progression in haematopoietic malignancies and prostate carcinomas. it is associated with aggressive subgroups of lymphoma, is a marker of poor prognosis in prostate carcinomas and has been suggested to have a role in hormone insensitivity of prostate malignancies. PIM1 has a possible role in other carcinomas with 6p21 genomic alterations. On one hand, PIM1 (due to its role in malignancy) appears to be a promising target for drug development programmes but, on the other hand, the complexity of its molecular structure has posed challenges in the development of PIM1 inhibitors. In this review we discuss PIM1 expression in human tissues (including some new data from our laboratory), its role in human malignancies, as well as the possibilities and challenges in the development of target therapy for PIM1. This is a Booklet about a first year design studio in a school of architecture. It describes and reflects on changes that happened in the course over a three year period starting September 2000. The Studio is made up of students from mainstream architecture, and dual courses with landscape and engineering. The booklet is for those who are thinking of studying architecture. It might also be for those already learning and teaching architecture who want to see how other design studios work.
