The level of high-density lipoprotein is thought to be critical in inhibiting lesion formation as well as reducing the lipid load of preexisting atherosclerotic lesions. With the aim of determining the main determinants of plasma HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c) in free-living adults, 997 individuals (52.3 10 years, 67 females) were selected for a descriptive cross-sectional study. The used data corresponded to the baseline obtained from participants clinically selected for a lifestyle modification program. Covariables of clinical, anthropometry, food intake, aerobic fitness, and plasma biochemistry were analyzed against plasma HDL-c either as continuous or categorized variables. After adjustments for age, gender, and BMI the excess of abdominal fat along with high carbohydrate-energy intake and altered plasma triglycerides were the stronger predictors of reduced plasma HDL-c. In conclusion lifestyle interventions aiming to normalize abdominal fatness and plasma triglycerides are recommended to restore normal levels of HDL-c in these free-living adults. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is the maximal quantity of energy that can be produced by the aerobic metabolism in certain time unity. It can be determined direct or indirectly by predictive equations. The objective of this study was to make a specific predictive equation to determine the VO 2max from boys aged 10-16 years-old. Forty-two boys underwent a treadmill running ergospirometric test, with the initial velocity set at 9 km/h, until voluntary exhaustion. By the multiple linear regression was possible to develop the following equation for the indirect determination of the VO 2max: VO2max (ml/min) = -1574.06 + (141.38 x Vpeak) + (48.34 * Body mass), with standard error of estimate = 191.5 ml/min (4.10 ml/kg/min) and coefficient of determination = 0.934. We suggest that this formula is appropriate to predict VO2max for this population.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible influence of different levels of aerobic fitness (VO2MAX) on the parameters of the running anaerobic sprint test (RAST). Thirty-eight subjects (Age = 18.1 ± 2.5 years, Height = 173 ± 1 cm and Body mass = 65.1 ± 6.5 kg) were classified into two groups, low and high aerobic fitness (LAF: n = 22 and HAF: n = 16). The VO2MAX was determined by an incremental exercise performed until exhaustion. The RAST was composed of six maximal efforts of 35m separated by 10s passive recovery. The VO2MAX was significantly different between groups (LAF = 51.7 ± 1.9 mL.kg -1.min-1; HAF = 58.6 ± 3.1 mL.kg -1.min-1). The mean power (MP) was significantly higher in the LAF (552.7 ± 132.1 W) in relation to the HAF group (463.6 ± 132.8 W). The impulse (ImP) was significantly correlated with the VO 2MAX in HAF. It can be concluded that there is an indication that the aerobic metabolism exerts an influence on the completion of RAST.

The aim of this study was to verify the effect of selective loads model in professional futsal players, during a preparatory mesocycle. Nine futsal professional players (23±2 anos), from the team of Federation Paulista of soccer indoor championship, composed the sample, characterized by intentional. The players were evaluated in two moments although of a preparatory mesocycle, microcycle 2 (PRE) and microcycle 7 (POS), by the tests of intermittent aerobic fitness, horizontal jump, one leg triple jump, velocity of 15m, agility and anaerobic power. The statistical analysis included the Student-t and Wilxocon tests (P<0.05). The results of horizontal jump, intermittent aerobic fitness and medium power improved, the velocity at 15 m decreased. The select loads model is a good option for the periodization to preparatory mesocycle in futsal.

The objective was to analyze the oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics during exercise performed at critical power (CP) in subjects with different aerobic status in cycling. Six trained cyclists (GT) and seven non-trained subjects (GNT) underwent to the following protocols in cyclergometer: (a) incremental to exhaustion to determine VO2max and its respective workload (IVO(2)max); b) three square-wave tests to exhaustion at 95-110% IVO2max to determine CP, and; (c) one square-wave test to exhaustion at 100% CP. During the exercise at CP the slow component expressed as absolute value (GT: 342.4 +/- 165.8 ml.min(-1) vs. GNT: 571.3 +/- 170.1 ml.min(-1)) and as the relative contribution to the increase of VO2 during exercise (GT: 10.0 +/- 4.6% vs. GNT: 26.6 +/- 7.3%) were lower for trained subjects. The VO2 at the end of the exercise at PC (GT: 89.8 +/- 8.4% VO(2)max vs. GNT: 97.4 +/- 2.8% VO(2)max) was significantly lower in GT (rho = 0.045), and similar to VO(2)max in GNT. Therefore, the aerobic level might influence the VO2 responses to exercise at PC

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between intermittent high-intensity efforts (RAST) parameters and variables related to aerobic metabolism (anaerobic threshold; LAN, maximal oxygen uptake; VO2MAX and velocity correspondent to VO2MAX; iVO(2MAX)). Eight under-17 (U17) soccer players (16 +/- 1 years) participated in the study. The participants were submitted to a graded exercise test and six maximal sprints of 35m with 10 seconds of passive recovery between each effort (RAST). The RAST parameters were not significant correlated with VO2MAX and LAN. However absolute and relative mean power were significantly correlated with iVO(2MAX) (r=0.79 e r=0.85, respectively). Furthermore, the fatigue index and the relative peak power were significantly correlated with the iVO(2MAX) (r=-0,57 e r=0,73, respectively). In conclusion, the only aerobic variable correlated with performance in consecutive efforts with brief recovery periods, such as RAST, is iVO(2MAX).
