The proposal that affective learning, the learning of likes and dislikes, can exist in the absence of contingency awareness, whereas signal learning, the learning of stimulus relationships, cannot, was investigated in a differential conditioning paradigm that was embedded in a visual masking task. Startle magnitude modulation and changes in verbal ratings served as measures of affective learning, whereas skin conductance was taken to reflect signal learning. Awareness was assessed online with an expectancy dial and in a postexperimental questionnaire. Both between-subject comparisons of verbalizers and nonverbalizers and within-subject comparisons of verbalizers before and after verbalization failed to reveal any evidence for learning, whether affective or otherwise, in the absence of knowledge of the stimulus contingencies. This paper proposes the creation of an objectively acquired reference database to more accurately characterize the incidence and longterm risk of relatively infrequent, but serious, adverse events. Such a database would be maintained longitudinally to provide for ongoing comparison with new rheumatologic drug safety databases collecting the occurrences and treatments of rare events, We propose the establishment of product-specific registries to prospectively follow a cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who receive newly approved therapies. In addition, a database is required of a much larger cohort of RA patients treated with multiple second line agents of sufficient size to enable case-controlled determinations of the relative incidence of rare but serious events in the treated (registry) versus the larger disease population, The number of patients necessary for agent-specific registries and a larger patient population adequate to supply a matched case-control cohort will depend upon estimates of the detectability of an increased incidence over background. We suggest a system to carry out this proposal that will involve an umbrella organization. responsible for establishment of this large patient cohort, envisioned to be drawn from around the world.

As individuals gain expertise in a chosen field they can begin to conceptualize how what they know can be applied more broadly, to new populations and situations, or to increase desirable outcomes. Judd's book does just this. It takes our current understanding of the etiology, course, and sequelae of brain injuries, combines this with established psychotherapy and rehabilitation techniques, and expands these into a cogent model of what Judd calls “neuropsychotherapy.” Simply put, neuropsychotherapy attempts to address the cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes in brain-injured persons, changes that may go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or untreated.

The standard mathematical models in population ecology assume that a population's growth rate is a function of its environment. In this paper we investigate an alternative proposal according to which the rate of change of the growth rate is a function of the environment and of environmental change. We focus on the philosophical issues involved in such a fundamental shift in theoretical assumptions, as well as on the explanations the two theories offer for some of the key data such as cyclic populations. We also discuss the relationship between this move in population ecology and a similar move from first-order to second-order differential equations championed by Galileo and Newton in celestial mechanics.

The work presented herein follows an ongoing research that aims to analyze methodological practices to be applied in Design Education. A reflection about methodological strategies in Design Education and the function of drawing in Design represents the beginning of this study. Then, we developed an interdisciplinary pedagogical experience with the Graphic Design 1st grade students from our institution (IPCA). In the current academic year, 2013/2014, we continue to evolve this project, introducing changes in the initial proposal. Major alterations focused on the aspects that could be strengthened in terms of interdisciplinarity. In this article, the authors describe those changes and discuss the outcomes of the novel proposal. As we have already reported, this investigation follows a reflection about working methods to be adopted in Design Education. This is in accordance with other previously published works that purpose the enlargement of Design into new knowledge fields such as Experience or Service Design, changing not only the role of the graphic designer, but also the skills required to be a professional designer (Alain Findelli, 2001), (Brian Lawson, 2006), (Ciampa-Brewer, 2010). Furthermore, concepts such as cooperation or multidisciplinary design, amongst others, have been frequently debated as design teaching strategies (Heller and Talarico, 2011, pp. 82-85). These educational approaches also have an impact on our research. The analysis of all these authors’ contributions together with a reflection on our teaching practice allowed us to propose an improved interdisciplinary intervention.
