Over the past few decades, the advantages of the visible-near infra-red (VisNIR) diffuse reflectance spectrometer (DRS) method have enabled prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC). In this study, SOC was predicted using regression models for samples taken from three sites (Gununo, Maybar and Anjeni) in Ethiopia. SOC was characterized in laboratory using conventional wet chemistry and VisNIR-DRS methods. Principal component analysis (PCA), principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLS) models were developed using Unscrambler X 10.2. PCA results show that the first two components accounted for a minimum of 96% variation which increased for individual sites and with data treatments. Correlation (r), coefficient of determination (R2) and residual prediction deviation (RPD) were used to rate four models built. PLS model (r, R2, RPD) values for Anjeni were 0.9, 0.9 and 3.6; for Gununo values 0.6, 0.3 and 1.2; for Maybar values 0.6, 0.3 and 0.9, and for the three sites values 0.7, 0.6 and 1.5, respectively. PCR model values (r, R2, RPD) for Anjeni were 0.9, 0.8 and 2.7; for Gununo values 0.5, 0.3 and 1; for Maybar values 0.5, 0.1 and 0.7, and for the three sites values 0.7, 0.5 and 1.2, respectively. Comparison and testing of models shows superior performance of PLS to PCR. Models were rated as very poor (Maybar), poor (Gununo and three sites) and excellent (Anjeni). A robust model, Anjeni, is recommended for prediction of SOC in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND Estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using a common formula for both adult and pediatric populations is challenging. Using inulin clearances (iGFRs), this study aims to investigate the existence of a precise age cutoff beyond which the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), or the Cockroft-Gault (CG) formulas, can be applied with acceptable precision. Performance of the new Schwartz formula according to age is also evaluated. METHOD We compared 503 iGFRs for 503 children aged between 33 months and 18 years to eGFRs. To define the most precise age cutoff value for each formula, a circular binary segmentation method analyzing the formulas' bias values according to the children's ages was performed. Bias was defined by the difference between iGFRs and eGFRs. To validate the identified cutoff, 30% accuracy was calculated. RESULTS For MDRD, CKD-EPI and CG, the best age cutoff was ≥14.3, ≥14.2 and ≤10.8 years, respectively. The lowest mean bias and highest accuracy were -17.11 and 64.7% for MDRD, 27.4 and 51% for CKD-EPI, and 8.31 and 77.2% for CG. The Schwartz formula showed the best performance below the age of 10.9 years. CONCLUSION For the MDRD and CKD-EPI formulas, the mean bias values decreased with increasing child age and these formulas were more accurate beyond an age cutoff of 14.3 and 14.2 years, respectively. For the CG and Schwartz formulas, the lowest mean bias values and the best accuracies were below an age cutoff of 10.8 and 10.9 years, respectively. Nevertheless, the accuracies of the formulas were still below the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative target to be validated in these age groups and, therefore, none of these formulas can be used to estimate GFR in children and adolescent populations.

Ozone (O3) phytototoxicity has been reported on a wide range of plantspecies, inducing the appearance of specific foliar injury or increasing leaf senescence. No information regarding the sensitivity of plantspecies from dehesa Mediterranean grasslands has been provided in spite of their great biological diversity. A screening study was carried out in open-top chambers (OTCs) to assess the O3-sensitivity of 22 representative therophytes of these ecosystems based on the appearance and extent of foliar injury. A distinction was made between specific O3injury and non-specific discolorations. Three O3 treatments (charcoal-filtered air, non-filtered air and non-filtered air supplemented with 40 nl l−1 O3 during 5 days per week) and three OTCs per treatment were used. The Papilionaceae species were more sensitive to O3 than the Poaceae species involved in the experiment since ambient levels induced foliar symptoms in 67% and 27%, respectively, of both plant families. An O3-sensitivity ranking of the species involved in the assessment is provided, which could be useful for bioindication programmes in Mediterranean areas. The assessed Trifoliumspecies were particularly sensitive since foliar symptoms were apparent in association with O3 accumulated exposures well below the current critical level for the prevention of this kind of effect. The exposure indices involving lower cut-off values (i.e. 30 nl l−1) were best related with the extent of O3-induced injury on these species.
