Thermal activation of gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones (1, 9 and 12) in the presence of a catalytic amount of propionic acid causes a rearrangement to give new gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones (2, 10 and 14) via an intramolecular ene reaction followed by a retro-ene reaction.

A remarkable difference is observed in the rates of [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of aryl 4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-hex-2-enopyranosides 1 and 2; the slower reactivity of the alpha-isomers is consistent with AM1 calculated transition state energetics of model systems.

The use of microwave heating technique for the acceleration of ortho ester Claisen rearrangement (a three step transformation) is described. Irradiation of a DMF solution of the allyl alcohol 5, triethyl orthoacetate and propionic acid (catalytic) in an Erlenmeyer flask for 10 minutes in a microwave oven generated the ester 8 in 83% yield. Analogously, ortho ester Claisen rearrangement of a variety of allyl and propargyl alcohols (9, 12-22) were achieved. The formation of the diester 10 from 2-butyne-1,4-diol (9) via the ortho ester Claisen rearrangement of two allyl alcohol moieties (involving sh steps) in 15 minutes, demonstrates the versatility of the microwave heating technique.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of diazomethane to the alpha,beta-unsaturated esters and lactones such as 2-4, 6-8, 10 and 13 occurs in a stereoselective manner affording conjugated Delta(2)-pyrazolines. E and Z isomers of D-mannitol lead to identical product which was cyclised to investigate the absolute stereochemistry of the product. The regiospecificities of all the reactions are consistent with FMO coefficients obtained through AM1 calculations.

Predictions of two popular closed-form models for unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (K) are compared with in situ measurements made in a sandy loam field soil. Whereas the Van Genuchten model estimates were very close to field measured values, the Brooks-Corey model predictions were higher by about one order of magnitude in the wetter range. Estimation of parameters of the Van Genuchten soil moisture characteristic (SMC) equation, however, involves the use of non-linear regression techniques. The Brooks-Corey SMC equation has the advantage of being amenable to application of linear regression techniques for estimation of its parameters from retention data. A conversion technique, whereby known Brooks-Corey model parameters may be converted into Van Genuchten model parameters, is formulated. The proposed conversion algorithm may be used to obtain the parameters of the preferred Van Genuchten model from in situ retention data, without the use of non-linear regression techniques.

Reactivity switching and selective activation of C-1 or C-3 in 2,3-unsaturated thioglycosides, namely, 2,3-dideoxy-1-thio-D-hex-2-enopyranosides are reported. The reactivity switching allowed activation of either C-1 or C-3, with the use of either N-iodosuccinimide (NIS)/triflic acid (TfOH) or TfOH alone. C-1 glycosylation with alcohol acceptors occurred in the presence of NIS/TfOH, without the acceptors reacting at C-3. On the other hand, reaction of 2,3-unsaturated thioglycosides with alcohols mediated by triflic acid led to transposition of C-1 ethylthio-moiety to C-3 intramolecularly, to form 3-ethylthio-glycals. Resulting glycals underwent glycosylation with alcohols to afford 3-ethylthio-2-deoxy glycosides. However, when thiol was used as an acceptor, only a stereoselective addition at C-3 resulted, so as to form C-1, C-3 dithio-substituted 2-deoxypyranosides. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Castor oil-based poly(mannitol-citric sebacate) was synthesized by simple, catalyst-free melt condensation process using monomers having potential to be metabolized in vivo. The polymer was characterized using various techniques and the tensile and hydration properties of the polymers were also determined. The biocompatibility of the polymer was tested using human foreskin fibroblasts cells. The in vitro degradation studies show that the time for complete degradation of the polymer was more than 21 days. The usage of castor oil polyester as a drug carrier was analysed by doping the polymer with 5-fluorouracil model drug and the release rate was studied by varying the percentage loading of drugs and the pH of the PBS solution medium. The cumulative drug-release profiles exhibited a biphasic release with an initial burst release and cumulative 100% release within 42 h. To understand the role of the polymer as a drug carrier in the release behaviour, drug-release studies were conducted with another drug, isoniazid. The release behaviour of isoniazid drug from the same polymer matrix followed an nth order kinetic model and 100% cumulative release was achieved after 12 days. The variation in the release behaviour for two model drugs from the same polymer matrix suggests a strong interaction between the polymer and the drug molecule.
