Two-dimensional photonic crystals working in near infrared region are fabricated into silicon-on-insulator wafer by 248-nm deep UV lithography. We present an efficient way to measure the photonic crystal waveguide's light transmission spectra at given polarization states.

We have studied the scattering process of AlGaAs/GaAs two-dimensional electron gas with the nearby embedded GaSb/GaAs type-II quantum dots (QDs) at low temperature. Quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation were performed to measure the electron density n(2D), the transport lifetime tau(t) and the quantum lifetime tau(q) under various biased gate voltage. By comparing measured results of QDs sample with that of reference sample without embedded QDs, mobilities (transport mobility mu(t) and quantum mobility mu(q)) dominated by GaSb QDs scattering were extracted as functions of n(2D). It was found that the ratios of tau(t) to tau(q) were varying within the range of 1-4, implying the scattering mechanism belonging to the sort of short-range interaction. In the framework of Born approximation, a scattering model considering rectangular-shaped potential with constant barrier height was successfully applied to explain the transport experimental data. In addition, an oscillating ratio of tau(t)/tau(q) with the increasing n(2D) was predicted in the model.

Two new copper-thiacalix[4]arene compounds, [Cu-2(1)-Cl-2(H(4)TC4A)](CH3OH) (1) and [Cu(I)2Cl(2)(H(4)PTC4A)](CH3OH)(CHCl3)(0.5) (2) (where H(4)TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene and H(4)PTC4A = p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene), were synthesized by the solvothermal method in the mixed CH3OH/CHCl3 (1: 1) solvent and reassembled in air at room temperature to two other structures, [(Cu4Cl3)-Cl-II(HCO2)(TC4A)(CH3-OH)(2)(H2O)](CHCl3)(CH3OH)(2.7) (3) and [(Cu4Cl4)-Cl-II(PTC4A)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), respectively. All these four compounds were characterized by TG analyses, FTIR spectroscopy, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional layered networks, while compounds 3 and 4 are assembled by some tetranuclear units.

Two-dimensional (2-D) gold networks were spontaneously formed at the air-water interface after HAuCl4 reacted with fructose at 90 degrees C in a sealed vessel, in a reaction in which fructose acted as both a reducing and a protecting agent. Through fine-tuning of the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to fructose, the thus-formed 2-D gold networks can be changed from a coalesced pattern to an interconnected pattern. In the coalesced pattern, some well-defined single-crystalline gold plates at the micrometer-scale could be seen, while in the interconnected pattern, many sub-micrometer particles and some irregular gold plates instead of well-defined gold plates appeared. It is also found that the 2-D gold networks in the form of an interconnected pattern can be used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) because of the strong localized electromagnetic field produced by the gaps between the neighboring particles in the 2-D gold networks.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) has attracted much attention for the analys is of complex samples. Even with a large peak capacity in GC x GC, peak overlapping is often met. In this paper, a new method was developed to resolve overlapped peaks based on the mass conservation and the exponentially modified Gaussian (EMG) model. Linear relationships between the calculated sigma, tau of primary peaks with the corresponding retention time (t(R)) were obtained, and the correlation coefficients were over 0.99. Based on such relationships, the elution profile of each compound in overlapped peaks could be simulated, even for the peak never separated on the second-dimension. The proposed method has proven to offer more accurate peak area than the general data processing method. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Higher heating value (HHV) is probably the most important property of the fuels. Bomb calorimeter and derived empirical formulae are often used for accurate determination of HHV of fuels. A useful empirical equation was derived to estimate HHV of petro-diesels from their C and H contents: HHV (in MJ/kg) = 0.3482(C) + 1.1887(H), r (2) = 0.9956. The derived correlation was validated against the most common formulae in the literature, Boie and Channiwala-Parikh correlations. Accordingly, accurate determination of C and H contents is essential for estimation of HHV and avoids using a bomb calorimeter. However, accurate estimation of C and H contents requires using expensive and laborious gas chromatographic techniques. In this work, chemometry offered a simple method for HHV determination of petro-diesels without using bomb calorimeter or even gas chromatography. PLS-1 calibration was used instead of gas chromatography to find C and H contents from the non-selective mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of petro-diesels, HHV was then estimated from the earlier empirical equation. The proposed method predicts HHV of petro-diesels with high accuracy and precision, with modest analysis costs. The present method may be extended to other fuels.

We present contemporary optical and infrared spectroscopic observations of the type IIn SN 1998S covering the period between 3 and 127 days after discovery. During the first week the spectra are characterized by prominent broad H, He and C III/N III emission lines with narrow peaks, superimposed on a very blue continuum (T similar to 24 000 K). In the following two weeks the C III/N III emission vanished, together with the broad emission components of the H and He lines. Broad, blueshifted absorption components appeared in the spectra. The temperature of the continuum also dropped to similar to 14000 K. By the end of the first month the spectrum comprised broad, blueshifted absorptions in H, He, Si II, Fe II and Sc II. By day 44, broad emission components in H and He reappeared in the spectra. These persisted to as late as days similar to 100-130, becoming increasingly asymmetric. We agree with Leonard et al. that the broad emission lines indicate interaction between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) emitted by the progenitor. We also agree that the progenitor of SN 1998S appears to have gone through at least two phases of mass-loss, giving rise to two CSM zones. Examination of the spectra indicates that the inner zone extended to less than or equal to 90 au, while the outer CSM extended from 185 an to over 1800 au.

A study was undertaken to examine a range of sample preparation and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIPS) methodologies, using undried samples, for predicting organic matter digestibility (OMD g kg(-1)) and ad libitum intake (g kg(-1) W-0.75) of grass silages. A total of eight sample preparation/NIRS scanning methods were examined involving three extents of silage comminution, two liquid extracts and scanning via either external probe (1100-2200 nm) or internal cell (1100-2500 nm). The spectral data (log 1/R) for each of the eight methods were examined by three regression techniques each with a range of data transformations. The 136 silages used in the study were obtained from farms across Northern Ireland, over a two year period, and had in vivo OMD (sheep) and ad libitum intake (cattle) determined under uniform conditions. In the comparisons of the eight sample preparation/scanning methods, and the differing mathematical treatments of the spectral data, the sample population was divided into calibration (n = 91) and validation (n = 45) sets. The standard error of performance (SEP) on the validation set was used in comparisons of prediction accuracy. Across all 8 sample preparation/scanning methods, the modified partial least squares (MPLS) technique, generally minimized SEP's for both OMD and intake. The accuracy of prediction also increased with degree of comminution of the forage and with scanning by internal cell rather than external probe. The system providing the lowest SEP used the MPLS regression technique on spectra from the finely milled material scanned through the internal cell. This resulted in SEP and R-2 (variance accounted for in validation set) values of 24 (g/kg OM) and 0.88 (OMD) and 5.37 (g/kg W-0.75) and 0.77 (intake) respectively. These data indicate that with appropriate techniques NIRS scanning of undried samples of grass silage can produce predictions of intake and digestibility with accuracies similar to those achieved previously using NIRS with dried samples. Massive young stellar objects (YSOs) are powerful infrared Hi line emitters. It has been suggested that these lines form in an outflow from a disc surrounding the YSO. Here, new two-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations are described which test this hypothesis. Infrared spectra are synthesized for a YSO disc wind model based on earlier hydrodynamical calculations. The model spectra are in qualitative agreement with the observed spectra from massive YSOs, and therefore provide support for a disc wind explanation for the Hi lines. However, there are some significant differences: the models tend to overpredict the Bra/Br? ratio of equivalent widths and produce line profiles which are slightly too broad and, in contrast to typical observations, are double-peaked. The interpretation of these differences within the context of the disc wind picture and suggestions for their resolution via modifications to the assumed disc and outflow structure are discussed. © 2005 RAS.

A novel diffusive gradients in thin film probe developed comprises diffusive gel layer of silver iodide (AgI) and a back-up Microchelex resin gel layer. 2D high-resolution images of sulfide and trace metals were determined respectively on the AgI gel by densitometric analysis and on the Microchelex resin layer with laser-ablation-inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).We investigated the validity of the analytical procedures used for the determination of sulfide and trace metals. We found low relative standard deviations on replicate measurements, linear trace-metal calibration curves between the LA-ICP-MS signal and the true trace-metal concentration in the resin gel, and a good agreement of the sulfide results obtained with the AgI resin gel and with other analytical methods. The method was applied on anoxic sediment pore waters in an estuarine and marine system. Simultaneous remobilization of sulfide and trace metals was observed in the marine sediment.

Thermal degradation and gaseous products evolving from the pyrolysis of sewage sludge, aimed at agricultural soil amendment, were investigated using Thermogravimetric Analysis in conjunction with Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis (TG-FTIR). The materials were studied in temperatures ranging from 30 to 800 ºC. Furthermore infrared spectra of sewage sludge samples were performed as a complementary technique. In parallel the sewage sludge was spiked with ibuprofen in order to test whether the mentioned techniques are able to detect the drug. Thermal analysis showed the range of 200-400ºC as the most characteristic for weight loss, corresponding with the organic matter volatilization, while the range of 500-800ºC was also characteristic and due to the volatilization of carbonates. On the other hand, ibuprofen-spiking tests identified at temperature range (150-250ºC) where the compound totally volatilizes, therefore, in this work, the detection of ibuprofen by TGA was established for concentrations higher than 0.5 g/kg sludge, concentration 102 times higher than the concentrations measured by other authors in regular sewage sludge (Martín, et al., 2010). A correlation has been found between the ibuprofen concentrations in the sludge and the intensity of the absorption bands, both for FT-IR spectra at the maximum emission temperature for ibuprofen (232ºC) as for the FT-IR spectra of the non-pyrolyzed samples.

The reflectance of thin films of magnesium doped SrRu03(Mg-SR0) produced by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiOa (100) substrates has been measured at room temperature between 100 and 7500 cm~^. The films were chosen to have wide range of thickness, stoichiometry and electrical properties. As the films were very thin (less than 300 nm), and some were insulating the reflectance data shows structures due to both the film and the substrate. Hence, the data was analyzed using Kramers-Kronig constrained variational fitting (VDF) method to extract the real optical conductivity of the Mg-SRO films. Although the VDF technique is flexible enough to fit all features of the reflectance spectra, it seems that VDF could not eliminate the substrate's contribution from fllm conductivity results. Also the comparison of the two different programs implementing VDF fltting shows that this technique has a uniqueness problem. The optical properties are discussed in light of the measured structural and transport properties of the fllms which vary with preparation conditions and can be correlated with differences in stoichiometry. This investigation was aimed at checking the VDF technique and also getting answer to the question whether Mg^"*" substitutes in to Ru or Sr site. Analysis of our data suggests that Mg^+ goes to Ru site.

We have employed time-dependent local-spin-density theory to analyze the far-infrared transmission spectrum of InAs self-assembled nanoscopic rings recently reported [A. Lorke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. (to be published)]. The overall agreement between theory and experiment is fairly good, which on the one hand confirms that the experimental peaks indeed reflect the ringlike structure of the sample, and on the other hand, asseses the suitability of the theoretical method to describe such nanostructures. The addition energies of one- and two-electron rings are also reported and compared with the corresponding capacitance spectra

We report time-resolved experiments studying the dynamics of the Na_3 B-X system. Femtosecond pump-probe techniques combined with ion time-of-flight (TOF) and zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy allow us to observe the three-dimensional wavepacket motion in the excited Na_3 B state and in the Na_3 X state. The ground state wavepacket is induced by stimulated emission pumping during the pump pulse. The X-state dynamics is dominated by the three vibrational modes of the Na_3. Furthermore we observed pseudorotational wavepacket motion in the B state. We do not observe a fragmentation of the B state within a time interval of 10 ps.

The J + 1 ← J transitions (J = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) in the microwave spectrum of SiH3NCO have been assigned for the vibrational ground state and for the vibrational states v10 = 1, 2, and 3. The results for v10 = 0 confirm earlier work. The vibration-rotation constants show a remarkable variation with v10 and l10. To a large extent the anomalous behavior of these constants has been explained in terms of a strongly anharmonic potential function for the ν10 vibrational mode.
