'All in one stroke': Grimms' fairy tales and the TV-production of a new Germany

The article looks at the most recent TV adaptations of the Grimms’ fairy tales by public broadcasting. Realized and marketed as a season which started in 2008,the thirty-four currently existing individual films constitute a significant national project that presents highly appealing notions of the German past to an audience divided over national conflict and demands of globalization. With children and adolescents at the centre, the films offer the young as a generation of moral superiority that facilitates social harmony and moral consensus. This post-unification utopia is beautifully realized on screen but rests on very conservative assumptions about gender, social driving forces, and political order.

Tales of the unexpected: research discoveries that occurred by accident

Data from four experimental research projects are presented which have in common that unexpected results caused a change in direction of the research. A plant growth accelerator caused the appearance of white black bean aphids, a synthetic pyrethroid suspected of enhancing aphid reproduction proved to enhance plant growth, a chance conversation with a colleague initiated a search for fungal DNA in aphids, and the accidental invasion of aphid cultures by a parasitoid reversed the aphid population ranking of two Brussels sprout cultivars. This last result led to a whole series of studies on the plant odour preferences of emerging parasitoids which in turn revealed the unexpected phenomenon that chemical cues to the maternal host plant are left with the eggs at oviposition. It is pointed out that, too often, researchers fail to follow up unexpected results because they resist accepting flaws in their hypotheses; also that current application criteria for research funding make it hard to accommodate unexpected findings.

Exposure of young rats to high estrogen doses leads to degeneration of elongated spermatids

Single high doses of estrogen (35 mg/kg body weight) were administered to young rats aiming to exacerbate its effects on germ cell populations. The short-term (1 week) and medium-term (7 weeks) consequences of this estrogenic treatment (ET) on the testis were evaluated using light and electron microscopies, quantitative methods and TUNEL reaction. Short-term ET led to 50% atrophy of the testis, however, in the medium term the gonado-somatic index was recovered. No histopathological alterations were found at seminiferous epithelium except for short-term severe degeneration of elongated spermatids (EL) and low frequency of these cells in both time intervals. Two morphologically distinct patterns of degeneration were observed: (1) clusters of EL which were TUNEL-negative and exhibited bizarre appearance and nuclear fragmentation, (2) isolated apoptotic EL within the cytoplasm of Sertoli cells (SC). Both degenerative phenomena were more frequent in stages III - VIII of seminiferous cycle, whereas at stages I and II only coiling of flagellum was observed. One week after ET, small amounts of EL were detected in stages IX - XII, suggesting spermiation failure. Signs of functional SC damage such as an accumulation of myelin-like inclusions in their cytoplasm were observed in the short but not medium-term. However, the apoptotic rates still remained five times higher and the number of elongated spermatids was three-fold lower. Our data indicate that exposure to a high dose of estrogen around puberty has stage-specific effects on the testis and causes massive degeneration of elongated spermatids. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. alpha-SiAlON ceramics with elongated grain morphology using an alternative sintering additive

In this work, the use of a natural yttrium oxide and rare earth oxide solid solution (CRE2O3) as stabilizers of the alpha-Si3N4 phase to form alpha-SiAlON has been investigated. This oxide mix is produced at FAENQUIL-DEMAR, at a cost of only 20% of pure commercial Y2O3. Two alpha-SiAlONs using pure Y2O3 or CRE2O3 have been prepared, using mixes of 20% by volume of a molar fraction of 9:1 of AlN to Y2O3 or AlN to CRE2O3, respectively, with 80% alpha-Si3N4. Samples were gas pressure-sintered at 1900 degreesC, under 1.5 MPa of N-2 for 60 min. Both compositions yielded alpha-SiAlON ceramics with high relative densities (98% t.d.), hardness of 18 GPa and fracture toughness of 5 Mpa m(1/2), with homogeneous microstructures composed of elongated alpha-SiAlON grains with aspect ratios of 5. It is concluded that the mixed rare earth concentrate (CRE2O3) can be used to produce alpha-SiAlON ceramics with similar microstructures and mechanical properties of alpha-SiAlON ceramics fabricated using pure Y2O3, but with the advantage of its lower production cost. Artemidia sequente: Dragon Tales, consequências do mangá na publicação de quadrinhos no Brasil

O termo Artemídia Sequente expressa um processo artístico-científico realizado na interface Arte-Comunicação-Ciência, apresentado como Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso em Artes Visuais na modalidade Bacharelado. A primeira parte deste trabalho tem como objetivo identificar e evidenciar, na abordagem da pesquisa artístico-científica, algumas das consequências da vinda da linguagem do mangá para o Brasil na produção atual de histórias em quadrinhos, tanto as observadas no mercado editorial tradicional quanto na produção independente. A identificação é feita a partir de levantamento bibliográfico e iconográfico do tema Mangá no Brasil, de estudos de casos com análises de obras de ambas as vertentes de publicação e de contextualização da veiculação digital/virtual. Além disso, também relacionarei os quadrinhos analisados com a Internet para assim estudar seu vínculo com o público através do meio digital. Na segunda parte tenho como objetivo mostrar e especificar a Artemídia Sequente ao relatar o processo completo da produção de uma história em quadrinhos de minha autoria: Dragon Tales, uma consequencia do mangá na publicação de quadrinhos no Brasil. O presente trabalho está inserido na linha de pesquisa Processos e procedimentos artísticos do Departamento de Artes Plásticas do Instituto de Artes da UNESP e descreve: partindo das ideias iniciais, roteiro, concept arts, desenhos das páginas, line art e chegando até a finalização da revista com o fechamento dos arquivos para serem enviados a uma gráfica. A monografia inclui também, como apêndice, uma cópia impressa do primeiro capítulo da história que produzi em forma de revista. A metodologia utilizada foi a Cibernética Pedagógica Freinetiana, desenvolvida no Grupo de Pesquisa Artemídia e Videoclip, do qual é líder o orientador... Talking Tools, Suffering Servants, and Defecating Men: The Power of Storytelling in Maithil Women’s Tales

What can we learn about the way that folk storytelling operates for tellers and audience members by examining the telling of stories by characters within such narratives? I examine Maithil women’s folktales in which stories of women’s suffering at the hands of other women are first suppressed and later overheard by men who have the power to alleviate such suffering. Maithil women are pitted against one another in their pursuit of security and resources in the context of patrilineal formations. The solidarities such women nonetheless form—in part through sharing stories and keeping each other’s secrets—serve to mitigate their suffering and maintain a counter-system of ideational patterns and practices.
