Tales of the expected: investigating the rhetorical strategies of innovation champions

Innovation continues to be high on the agenda in construction. It is widely considered to be an essential prerequisite of improved performance both for the sector at large and for individual firms. Success stories dominate the parts of the academic literature that rely heavily on the recollections of key individuals. A complementary interpretation focuses on the way innovation champions in hindsight interpret, justify and legitimize the diffusion of innovations. Emphasis is put on the temporal dimension of interpretation and how this links to rhetorical strategies and impression management tactics. Rhetorical theories are drawn upon to analyse the accounts given by innovation champions in seven facilities management organizations. In particular, the three persuasive appeals in classic rhetoric are used to highlight the rhetorical justifications mobilized in the descriptions of what took place. The findings demonstrate the usefulness of rhetorical theories in complementing studies of innovation.

Borrowing and shift-induced interference: contrasting patterns in French-Germanic contact in Brussels and Strasbourg

The main aim of the present article is to test hypotheses derived from the model for contact- induced language change as formulated in Thomason and Kaufman (1988 et seq.). As the model correctly predicts the asymmetries between the mutual influences of the Germanic and the Romance varieties in Brussels and Strasbourg it is a very powerful tool for describing the contact patterns in these cities. The analysis shows that the contact patterns are very similar, both from a quantitative and from a qualitative point of view, despite important differences in the sociolinguistic situation of both cities. The striking similarities in the outcome of language contact seem to find a plausible explanation in the fact that the language contact situations in both cities are similar from a typological point of view: in each city a variety of French is in contact with a Germanic variety (Alsatian and Brussels Dutch). Thus, the claim of the present article is that the structure of the languages plays a more prominent role in the outcome of language contact than the sociolinguistic history of the speakers.

'All in one stroke': Grimms' fairy tales and the TV-production of a new Germany

The article looks at the most recent TV adaptations of the Grimms’ fairy tales by public broadcasting. Realized and marketed as a season which started in 2008,the thirty-four currently existing individual films constitute a significant national project that presents highly appealing notions of the German past to an audience divided over national conflict and demands of globalization. With children and adolescents at the centre, the films offer the young as a generation of moral superiority that facilitates social harmony and moral consensus. This post-unification utopia is beautifully realized on screen but rests on very conservative assumptions about gender, social driving forces, and political order.

Tales of the unexpected: research discoveries that occurred by accident

Data from four experimental research projects are presented which have in common that unexpected results caused a change in direction of the research. A plant growth accelerator caused the appearance of white black bean aphids, a synthetic pyrethroid suspected of enhancing aphid reproduction proved to enhance plant growth, a chance conversation with a colleague initiated a search for fungal DNA in aphids, and the accidental invasion of aphid cultures by a parasitoid reversed the aphid population ranking of two Brussels sprout cultivars. This last result led to a whole series of studies on the plant odour preferences of emerging parasitoids which in turn revealed the unexpected phenomenon that chemical cues to the maternal host plant are left with the eggs at oviposition. It is pointed out that, too often, researchers fail to follow up unexpected results because they resist accepting flaws in their hypotheses; also that current application criteria for research funding make it hard to accommodate unexpected findings.

Artemidia sequente: Dragon Tales, consequências do mangá na publicação de quadrinhos no Brasil

O termo Artemídia Sequente expressa um processo artístico-científico realizado na interface Arte-Comunicação-Ciência, apresentado como Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso em Artes Visuais na modalidade Bacharelado. A primeira parte deste trabalho tem como objetivo identificar e evidenciar, na abordagem da pesquisa artístico-científica, algumas das consequências da vinda da linguagem do mangá para o Brasil na produção atual de histórias em quadrinhos, tanto as observadas no mercado editorial tradicional quanto na produção independente. A identificação é feita a partir de levantamento bibliográfico e iconográfico do tema Mangá no Brasil, de estudos de casos com análises de obras de ambas as vertentes de publicação e de contextualização da veiculação digital/virtual. Além disso, também relacionarei os quadrinhos analisados com a Internet para assim estudar seu vínculo com o público através do meio digital. Na segunda parte tenho como objetivo mostrar e especificar a Artemídia Sequente ao relatar o processo completo da produção de uma história em quadrinhos de minha autoria: Dragon Tales, uma consequencia do mangá na publicação de quadrinhos no Brasil. O presente trabalho está inserido na linha de pesquisa Processos e procedimentos artísticos do Departamento de Artes Plásticas do Instituto de Artes da UNESP e descreve: partindo das ideias iniciais, roteiro, concept arts, desenhos das páginas, line art e chegando até a finalização da revista com o fechamento dos arquivos para serem enviados a uma gráfica. A monografia inclui também, como apêndice, uma cópia impressa do primeiro capítulo da história que produzi em forma de revista. A metodologia utilizada foi a Cibernética Pedagógica Freinetiana, desenvolvida no Grupo de Pesquisa Artemídia e Videoclip, do qual é líder o orientador...
