The prediction of the time and the efficiency of the remediation of contaminated soils using soil vapor extraction remain a difficult challenge to the scientific community and consultants. This work reports the development of multiple linear regression and artificial neural network models to predict the remediation time and efficiency of soil vapor extractions performed in soils contaminated separately with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene. The results demonstrated that the artificial neural network approach presents better performances when compared with multiple linear regression models. The artificial neural network model allowed an accurate prediction of remediation time and efficiency based on only soil and pollutants characteristics, and consequently allowing a simple and quick previous evaluation of the process viability.

Present study is focused on the spatiotemporal variation of the microbial population (bacteria, fungus and actinomycetes) in the grassland soils of tropical montane forest and its relation with important soil physico-chemical characteristics and nutrients. Different physico-chemical properties of the soil such as temperature, moisture content, organic carbon, available nitrogen, available phosphorous and available potassium have been studied. Results of the present study revealed that both microbial load and soil characteristics showed spatiotemporal variation. Microbial population of the grassland soils were characterized by high load of bacteria followed by fungus and actinomycetes. Microbial load was high during pre monsoon season, followed by post monsoon and monsoon. The microbial load varied with important soil physico-chemical properties and nutrients. Organic carbon content, available nitrogen and available phosphorous were positively correlated with bacterial load and the correlation is significant at 0.05 and 0.01 levels respectively. Available nitrogen and available phosphorous were positively correlated with fungus at 0.05 level significance. Moisture content was negatively correlated with actinomycetes at 0.01 level of significance. Organic carbon negatively correlated with actinomycetes load at 0.05 level of significance

Invasive plant species have been shown to alter the microbial community composition of the soils they invade and it is suggested that this below-ground perturbation of potential pathogens, decomposers or symbionts may feedback positively to allow invasive success. Whether these perturbations are mediated through specific components of root exudation are not understood. We focussed on 8-hydroxyquinoline, a putative allelochemical of Centaurea diffusa (diffuse knapweed) and used an artificial root system to differentiate the effects of 8-hydroxyquinoline against a background of total rhizodeposition as mimicked through supply of a synthetic exudate solution. In soil proximal (0-10 cm) to the artificial root, synthetic exudates had a highly significant (P < 0.001) influence on dehydrogenase, fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and urease activity. in addition, 8-hydroxyquinoline was significant (p = 0.003) as a main effect on dehydrogenase activity and interacted with synthetic exudates to affect urease activity (p = 0.09). Hierarchical cluster analysis of 16S rDNA-based DGGE band patterns also identified a primary affect of synthetic exudates and a secondary affect of 8-hydroxyquinoline on bacterial community structure. Thus, we show that the artificial rhizosphere produced by the synthetic exudates was the predominant effect, but, that the influence of the 8-hydroxyquinoline signal on the activity and structure of soil microbial communities could also be detected. Potassium (K) leaching is affected by soil texture and available K, among other factors. In this experiment, effects of soil texture and K availability on K distribution were studied in the presence of roots, with no excess water. Soils from two 6-year field experiments on a sandy clay loam and a clay soil fertilized yearly with 0, 60, 120, and 180 kg ha-1 of K2O were accommodated in pots that received 90 kg ha-1 of K2O. Soybean was grown up to its full bloom (R2). Under field conditions, K leaching below the arable layer increased with K rates, but the effect was less noticeable in the clay soil. Potassium leaching in a sandy clay loam soil was related to soil K contents from prior fertilizations. With no excess water, in the presence of soybean roots, K distribution in the profile was significant in the lighter textured soil but was not apparent on the heavier textured soil.

The objective of experiment 1 was to evaluate the effects of treatments with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or GnRH 7 d after induced ovulation on reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows submitted to timed artificial insemination (TAI) or timed embryo transfer (TET). A total of 834 potential breedings were used from 661 lactating Holstein cows (37.3 +/- 0.3 kg of milk/d). Cows had ovulation synchronized and were assigned randomly to receive TAI on d 0 or TET on d 7. Within each group, cows were assigned randomly to receive on d 7 no additional treatment (control; n(TAI) = 156; n(TET) = 126), a 100 mu g i.m. injection of GnRH (n(TAI) = 155; n(TET) = 124), or a 2,500 TU i.m. injection of hCG (ITA = 151; n(TET) = 122). Postbreeding treatment affected the percentages of pregnant cows at TET on d 28 (control: 38.1%; GnRH: 52.4%; hCG: 45.1%) and on d 60 (control: 32.5%; GnRH: 41.1%; hCG: 38.5%), but postbreeding treatment did not affect percentages of pregnant cows at TAT on d 28 (control: 30.1%; GnRH: 32.2%; hCG: 32.4%) or on d 60 (control: 25.6%; GnRH: 27.1%; hCG: 29.8%). The objective of experiment 2 was to evaluate the effect of a treatment with GnRH 7 d after TET on reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows that received a previous GnRH treatment at TET. A total of 285 potential breedings were used from 257 lactating Holstein cows (35.1 +/- 0.8 kg of milk/d). Cows had ovulation synchronized and were assigned for TET on d 7. Immediately after TET, all cows were treated with a 100 mu g i.m. injection of GnRH. on d 14, cows were assigned randomly to receive (G7-14; n = 147) or not (G7; n = 138) an additional injection of GnRH. Pregnancy diagnosis were performed on d 28 and 60. The additional treatment with GnRH on d 14 did not affect the percentages of pregnant cows on d 28 (G7: 48.5%; G7-14: 42.9%) or on d 60 (G7: 39.8%; G7-14: 37.4%). In conclusion, treatment with GnRH or hCG 7 d after induced ovulation increased conception rates in lactating dairy cows submitted to TET, but not in cows submitted to TAI. Moreover, treatment with GnRH 7 d after TET did not enhance reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows that received a previous GnRH treatment at TET.

This work consisted of determining the degree of humification of humic substances (HS) extracted from six different Amazonian soils collected from flooded and unflooded regions at different depths (0-10, 10-20, 20-40, and 60 cm). The humic substances were extracted according to procedures recommended by the International Humic Substances Society and characterized using elemental analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The findings on semiquinone-type free radical concentrations in HS showed variations of 0.10-7.55x10(18) spins g(-1) of carbon (g C)(-1), indicating considerable differences between the humification levels of HS extracted from Amazonian soils. The results showed an average of 1.71 +/- 0.04 x 10(18) spins (g C)(-1), which is congruent with other data reported in the literature on Tropical soils. It was found that, on average, HS extracted from flooded soil contained higher semiquinone-type free radical concentrations than HS extracted from unflooded soils, indicating the influence of humidity in the humification process of organic matter. The humification process varies according to the profile, and the 10-20- and 0-10-cm profiles generally showed more humified HS. The degree of humification of the HS studied here displayed a similar behavior when exposed to fluorescence (excitation at 465 nm) and EPR (R=0.85). However, the low correlation between the C/H, C/O, and C/N atomic ratios and the semiquinone-type free radical concentration/fluorescence intensities indicated that data obtained by these techniques with regard to the degree of humification of HS may lead to different conclusions. Determining the variability of carbon dioxide emission from soils is an important task as soils are among the largest sources of carbon in biosphere. In this work the temporal variability of bare soil CO2 emissions was measured over a 3-week period. Temporal changes in soil CO2 emission were modelled in terms of the changes that occurred in solar radiation (SR), air temperature (T-air), air humidity (AR), evaporation (EVAP) and atmospheric pressure (ATM) registered during the time period that the experiment was conducted. The multiple regression analysis (backward elimination procedure) includes almost all the meteorological variables and their interactions into the final model (R-2 = 0.98), but solar radiation showed to be the one of the most relevant variables. The present study indicates that meteorological data could be taken into account as the main forces driving the temporal variability of carbon dioxide emission from bare soils, where microbial activity is the sole source of carbon dioxide emitted.
