Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) of sub-monolayer (SML) InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot-quantum-well heterostructures was measured at 5 K for the first time. The radiative lifetime of SML quantum dots (QDs) increases from 500 ps to 800 ps with the increase of the size of QDs, which is related to the small confinement energy of the excitons inside SML QDs and the exciton transfer from smaller QDs to larger ones through tunneling. The rise time of quantum-dot state PL signal strongly depends on the excitation power density. At low excitation power density, the rise time is about 35 ps, the mechanism of carrier capture is dominated by the emission of longitudinal-optical phonons. At high excitation power density, the rise time decreases as the excitation density increases, and Auger process plays an important role in the carrier capture. These results are very useful for understanding the working properties of sub-monolayer quantum-dot devices.

Two types of InAs self-assembled Quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by Molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements showed that, compared to QDs grown on GaAs substrate, QDs grown on InGaAs layer has a significantly enhanced density. The short spacing (several nanometer) among QDs stimulates strong coupling and leads to a large red-shift of the 1.3 mu m photoluminescence (PL) peak. We study systematically the dependence of PL lifetime on the QDs size, density and temperature (1). We found that, below 50 K, the PL lifetime is insensitive to temperature, which is interpreted from the localization effects. As T increases, the PL lifetime increases, which can be explained from the competition between the carrier redistribution and thermal emission at higher temperature. The increase of carriers in QDs migrated from barriers and wetting layer (WL), and the redistribution of carriers among QDs enhance the PL lifetime as T increases. The thermal emission and non-radiative recombination have effects to reduce the PL lifetime at higher T. As a result, the radiative recombination lifetime is determined by the wave function overlapping of electrons and holes in QDs, and QDs with different densities have different PL lifetime dependence on the QDs size. We study the two samples of AIInGaN, i.e., 1-mum GaN grown at 1030degreesC on the buffer and followed by a 0.6-mum-thick epilayer of AIInGaN under the low pressure of 76 Torr and the AIInGaN layer deposited directly on the buffer layer without the high-temperature GaN layer, by temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and picosecond time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy. The TRPL signals of both the samples were fitted well as a stretched exponential decay at all temperatures, indicating significant disorder in the material. We attribute the disorder to nanoscale quantum dots or discs of high indium concentration. Temperature dependence of dispersive exponent beta shows that the stretched exponential decay of the two samples comes from different mechanisms. The different depths of the localization potential account for the difference, which is illustrated by the results of temperature dependence of radiative recombination lifetime and PL peak energy.

Silica-based functionalized terbium fluorescent nanoparticles were prepared, characterized and developed as a fluorescence probe for antibody labeling and time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay. The nanoparticles were prepared in a water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion containing a strongly fluorescent Tb3+ chelate. N,N.N-1,N-1-12,6-bis(3'-aminomethyl-1'-pyrazolyl)phenylpyridine] tetrakis(acetate)-Tb3+ (BPTA-Tb3+), Triton X-100, octanol, and cyclohexane by controlling copolymerization of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-[2-(2- aminoethylamino)-ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (AEPS) with ammonia water. The characterizations by transmission electron microscopy and fluorometric quantum methods show that the nanoparticles are spherical and uniform in size, 45 +/- 3 nm in diameter, strongly fluorescent with fluorescence yield of 10% and a long fluorescence lifetime of 2.0 ms. The amino groups directly introduced to the nanoparticle's surface by using AEPS in the preparation made the surface modification and bioconjugation of the nanoparticles easier. The nanoparticle-labeled anti-human alpha-fetoprotein antibody was prepared and used for time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay of (x-fetoprotein (AFP) in human serum samples. The assay response is linear from 0.10 ng ml(-1) to about 100 ng ml(-1) with the detection limit of 0.10 ng ml(-1). The coefficient variations (CVs) of the method are less than 9.0%. and the recoveries are in the range of 84-98% for human serum sample measurements. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The in situ crystallization kinetics of syndiotactic poly(propylene) (sPP) has been investigated by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The structure evolutions during the isothermal crystallization of sPP with different shear rates have been observed. The results show that shear accelerates the process of crystallization kinetics. Even under low shear rate, the lamellae can be distinctly oriented. In contrast, the lamellar parameters such as the long period, lamellar thickness, and the scattering invariant 0 can change obviously only under high shear rate.

In this paper, we report on a solid phase time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay chelate reagent-4,7-bis(chlorosulfophenyl)1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (BCPDA), which is suitable as a fluorescent labeling agent. The five step synthesis product of BCPDA was presented for improving the purity of the product based on the three step synthesis product. The approach involves chlorization, hydrolyzing the ester, preparing disodium, carboxylate to diacid, sulfonation. The yield of five step product is 99 %, 45 %, 94 %, 95 %, 80 % respectively. The structure and purity of product was characterized by the melting point, IR,H-1 NMR, UV spectrum, element analysis, and proved to be consistent with the structure predictal.

This paper described a laser-excited time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay set. It made lanthanide ion to couple the anhydrde of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPAA) for labeling antibodies. The experiment used polystyrene tap coated with HCV antigen as the solid phase and a chelate of the rare earth metal europium as fluorescent label. A nitrogen laser beam was used to excite the Eu3+ chelates and after 60 ys delay time, the emission fluorescence was measured. Background fluorescence of short lifetimes caused by serum components and Raman scattering can be eliminated by set the delay rime. In the system condition, fluorescent spectra and fluorescent lifetimes of Eu3+ beta-naphthoyltrifluroacetone (NTA) chelates were measured. The fluorescent lifetime value is 650 mu s. The maximum emssion wavelength is 613 nm. The linear range of europium ion concentration is 1 x 10(-7)- 1 x 10(-11) g.mL(-1) and the detection limit is 1 x 10(-13) g.mL(-1). The relative standard deviation of determination ( n = 12) for samples at 0.01 ng.mL(-1) magnitude is 6.4%. Laser-TRFIA was also found to be suitable for diagnosis of HCV. The sensitvity and specificity were comparable to enzyme immunoassay. The result was obtained with laser-TRFIA for 29 human correlated well with enzyme immunoassay.

The complexation of acenaphthene and fluoranthene with beta-cyclodextrin (CD) in aqueous solutions in the presence and absence of ethanol was investigated by means of the time-resolved fluorescence technique. The appearance of a longer lifetime component and the increase of its fraction relative to that of the shorter lifetime component with increasing CD concentration demonstrate the formation of inclusion complex between the guest molecule and CD. The formation constants for complexation were derived from the pre-exponential factor A(i) of fluorescence decay curves. The presence of ethanol in the reaction systems enhanced the inclusion to a large extent.

A new nonadentate ligand, N, N, N-1, N-1-[2,6-bis(3'-aminomethyl-1 1'-pyrazolyl)-4-phenylpyridine]tetrakis(acetic acid) (BPTA) for a Tb3+ fluorescent complex was synthesized. The Tb3+ complex is strongly fluorescent, having a large fluorescence quantum yield of 1.00 and very long fluorescence lifetime of 2.681 ms in 0.05 M berate buffer of pH 9.1. Streptavidin (SA) was labeled with SPTA by using its succinimidyl monoester, and the BPTA-Tb3+-labeled SA was used in sandwich-type time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA) of alpha -fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in human sera. The Tb3+-labeled SA was also used in competitive type TR-FIA of bensulfuron- methyl (BSM) in water. The detection limits of these assays are 42 pg/mL for AFP, 70 pg/mL for CEA, and 0.4 ng/mL for BSM. In addition, a new simultaneous measurement method for AFP and CEA in a human serum sample was developed by using 4,4'-bis(1 " ,1 " ,1 " ,2 " ,2 " ,3 " ,3 " -heptafluoro-4 " ,6 " -hexanedion-6 " -yl)chlorosulfo-o-terphenyl ((BHHCT)-Eu3+-labeled anti-AFP antibody, biotinylated anti-CEA antibody, and BPTA-Tb3+-labeled SA. The concentrations of AFP and CEA in 39 human serum samples were determined, and the results were compared with those of the independently determined AFP and CEA by TR-FIA with a single-label method. A good correlation was obtained with the correlation coefficients of 0.991 for AFP and 0.994 for CEA.
