The molar polarisability and molar volume for 71 ionic liquids were extracted from 157 measurements of their refractive index and density, which were then further deconstructed into atomic contributions by means of a Designed Regression analysis. Using this approach, the density and refractive index for any chosen ionic liquid with alkyl-substituted imidazolium cations can be predicted in good agreement with experimental data.

Bioactive glasses and glass–ceramics are a class of biomaterials which elicit special response on their surface when in contact with biological fluids, leading to strong bonding to living tissue. This particular trait along with good sintering ability and high mechanical strength make them ideal materials for scaffold fabrication. The work presented in this thesis is directed towards understanding the composition-structure-property relationships in potentially bioactive glasses designed in CaOMgOP2O5SiO2F system, in some cases with added Na2O. The main emphasis has been on unearthing the influence of glass composition on molecular structure, sintering ability and bioactivity of phosphosilicate glasses. The parent glass compositions have been designed in the primary crystallization field of the pseudo-ternary system of diopside (CaO•MgO•2SiO2) – fluorapatite (9CaO•3P2O5•CaF2) – wollastonite (CaO•SiO2), followed by studying the impact of compositional variations on the structure-property relationships and sintering ability of these glasses. All the glasses investigated in this work have been synthesized via melt-quenching route and have been characterized for their molecular structure, sintering ability, chemical degradation and bioactivity using wide array of experimental tools and techniques. It has been shown that in all investigated glass compositions the silicate network was mainly dominated by Q2 units while phosphate in all the glasses was found to be coordinated in orthophosphate environment. The glass compositions designed in alkali-free region of diopside – fluorapatite system demonstrated excellent sintering ability and good bioactivity in order to qualify them as potential materials for scaffold fabrication while alkali-rich bioactive glasses not only hinder the densification during sintering but also induce cytotoxicity in vitro, thus, are not ideal candidates for in vitro tissue engineering. One of our bioglass compositions with low sodium content has been tested successfully both in vivo and in preliminary clinical trials. But this work needs to be continued and deepened. The dispersing of fine glass particles in aqueous media or in other suitable solvents, and the study of the most important factors that affect the rheology of the suspensions are essential steps to enable the manufacture of porous structures with tailor-made hierarchical pores by advanced processing techniques such as Robocasting.

Lyotropic nematics consisting of surfactant-cosurfactant water solutions may present a biaxial phase or direct U(+) <-> U(-) transitions, in different regions of the temperature-relative concentration phase diagram, for different systems and compositions. We propose that these may be related to changes of uniaxial micellar form, which may occur either smoothly or abruptly. Smooth change of cylinder-like into disc-like shapes requires a distribution of Maier-Saupe interaction constants and we consider two limiting cases for the distribution of forms: a single Gaussian and a double Gaussian. Alternatively, an abrupt change of form is described by a discontinuous distribution of interaction constants. Our results show that the dispersive distributions yield a biaxial phase, while an abrupt change of shape leads to coexistence of uniaxial phases. Fitting the theory to the experiment for the ternary system KL/decanol/D2O leads to transition lines in very good agreement with experimental results. In order to rationalise the results of the comparison, we analyse temperature and concentration form dependence, which connects micellar and experimental macroscopic parameters. Physically consistent variations of micellar asymmetry, amphiphile partitioning and volume are obtained. To the best of the authors` knowledge, this is the first truly statistical microscopic approach that is able to model experimentally observed lyotropic biaxial nematic phases.

We report on the size, shape, structure, and interactions of lysozyme in the ternary system lysozyme/DMSO/water at low protein concentrations. Three structural regimes have been identified, which we term the ""folded"" (0 < phi(DMSO) < 0.7), ""unfolded"" (0.7 <= phi(DMSO) < 0.9), and ""partially collapsed"" (0.9 <= phi(DMSO) < 1.0) regime. Lysozyme resides in a folded conformation with an average radius of gyration of 1.3 +/- 0.1 nm for phi(DMSO) < 0.7 and unfolds (average R(g) of 2.4 +/- 0.1 nm) above phi(DMSO) > 0.7. This drastic change in the protein`s size coincides with a loss of the characteristic tertiary structure. It is preceded by a compaction of the local environment of the tryptophan residues and accompanied by a large increase in the protein`s overall flexibility. In terms of secondary structure, there is a gradual loss of alpha-helix and concomitant increase of beta-sheet structural elements toward phi(DMSO) = 0.7, while an increase in phi(DMSO) at even higher DMSO volume fractions reduces the presence of both a-helix and beta-sheet secondary structural elements. Protein-protein interactions remain overall repulsive for all values of phi(DMSO) An attempt is made to relate these structural changes to the three most important physical mechanisms that underlie them: the DMSO/water microstructure is strongly dependent on the DMSO volume fraction, DMSO acts as a strong H-bond acceptor, and DMSO is a bad solvent for the protein backbone and a number of relatively polar side groups, but a good solvent for relatively apolar side groups, such as tryptophan.

Thin films were prepared using glass precursors obtained in the ternary system NaPO(3)-BaF(2)-WO(3) and the binary system NaPO(3)-WO(3) with high concentrations of WO(3) (above 40% molar). Vitreous samples have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. Several structural characterizations were performed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L(I) and L(III) absorption edges. XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only sixfold coordinated (octahedral WO(6)) and that these films are free of tungstate tetrahedral units (WO(4)). In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed identifying a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO(3) increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the films network indicating the intermediary behavior of WO(6) octahedra in the film network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed identifying the presence of W-O and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO(3) concentrated samples (above 40% molar) attributed to the formation of WO(6) clusters. Their extended transparency in the IR makes them attractive for use as optical fibers for CO laser power delivery and optical amplification. This paper firstly describes the spectacular stabilizing effect of MgF2 on the binary system InF3-BaF2. The investigation of the InF3-BaF2-MgF2 system led to samples up to 5mm in thickness. Further optimization of this system was achieved by incorporation of limited amounts of other fluorides and resulted in increased resistence to devitrification. The second approach of this work was concerned to the investigation of the pseudo-ternary system InF3-GdF3-GaF3 at constant concentrations of ZnF2-SrF2-BaF2-NaF. Several compositions were studied in this system. The samples presented a better thermal stability when compared to other families of fluoride glasses. Therefore, these glasses seem to be very promising for the fabrication of special optical fibers. Thermal data are reported.

SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. A systematic investigation on glass formation in the ternary system InF3-BaF2-[Sc(PO3)(3)](n) has been carried out. Scandium polyphosphate [Sc(PO3)(3)](n) has been used as a third component in order to investigate the possibilities of obtaining new stable glasses. The above long-chain polyphosphate has been prepared using a specially elaborated cryo-technique, which allowed the preparation of high-purity product. Stable ternary compositions have been obtained within the compositions range (in mol%): 5-75 InF3, 0-80% BaF2, 0-50% [Sc(PO3)(3)](n). Glasses were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry, vibrational spectroscopy (Raman) and P-31 NMR. Structural features for the glass were put forward. Isolated P(O,F)4 groups or fluoroindated metaphosphate units could be identified depending on glass compositions. (C) 2002 Academie des sciences / Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.

Vitreous samples were prepared in the NaPO(3)-BaF(2)WO(3) ternary system with high WO(3) concentrations. These glasses exhibit a strong absorption in the visible due to the presence of reduced tungsten species and the use of oxidizing species is required. The couple Sb(2)O(3)/NaNO(3) was introduced in the composition and allowed to obtain transparent glasses. These oxidized samples were illuminated by visible laser radiation and showed an efficient volumetric photochromic effect. The photosensitive effect appeared as a dark spot throughout the entire volume of the glasses. The effect was investigated by several techniques such as, U-V-visible absorption, Raman and XANES at the L(1) and L(3) tungsten absorption edges. The results suggest a photoreduction of tungsten atoms without structural changes of the viteous network. Finally, the photochromic effect can be erased by thermal treatment at 200 degrees C for a few minutes. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

\A new class of tungstate fluorophosphate glasses was identified in the NaPO3-BaF2-WO3 ternary system. The variation of several physical properties was determined with respect to chemical composition. Characteristic temperatures, density and refractive index increase as tungsten oxide content increases. The optical transmission range and specially the energy bandgap depend of the WO3 amount. No crystallization could be observed for the Most WO3 concentrated vitreous samples (greater than or equal to20% molar). Color and optical properties of the glasses depend of the melting time because of the presence of reduced tungsten species like W5+ and W4+. In addition, photodarkening is observed in tungsten rich glass samples under UV laser illumination and this phenomenon can be reversible by heat treatment near the glass transition temperature. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ), and isothermal titration microcalorimetry have been used to show that, in dilute solution, low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 12 kDa) interacts with the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether, C12E8, to form a complex. Whereas the relaxation time distributions for the binary C12E8/water and PEG/water systems are unimodal, in the ternary mixtures they may be either uni- or bimodal depending on the relative concentrations of the components. At low concentrations of PEG or surfactant, the components of the relaxation time distribution are unresolvable, but the distribution becomes bimodal at higher concentrations of either polymer or surfactant. For the ternary system in excess surfactant, we ascribe, on the basis of the changes in apparent hydrodynamic radii and the scattered intensities, the fast mode to a single micelle, the surface of which is associated with the polymer and the slow mode to a similar complex but containing two or three micelles per PEG chain. Titration microcalorimetry results show that the interaction between C12E8, and PEG is exothermic and about 1 kJ mol(-1) at concentrations higher than the CMC of C12E8. The aggregation number, obtained by TRFQ, is roughly constant when either the PEG or the C12E8 concentration is increased at a given concentration of the second component, owing to the increasing amount of surfactant micelles inside the complex.

Glass formation in the pseudo ternary system ZnF2-GdF3-BaF2-InF3 and other complex systems stabilized by NaF, CaF2, AlF3 and YF3 have been investigated. Samples with greater stability have been prepared and their properties measured. Optical absorption and emission spectra of Gd3+ ions doped glasses with 2, 4, 10 and 20% concentrations have been measured. Using the Judd-Ofelt theory and the experimental oscillator strengths, the Judd-Ofelt parameters have been calculated. The emission of Gd3+ ions from 6I and 6P has been detected and the lifetime has been measured.

The cation substitutions in the crystal lattice of binary potassium-holmium vanadate (V) K3Ho(VO4)2 by magnesium have been studied using various types of chemical solid state reactions. It was shown that in the presence of the quasi-ternary system K3VO4-Mg3(VO4)2-HoVO 4 at 700°C there a compound defined as K3Ho(VO4)2 with a narrow homogeneity range where K and Ho are partially substituted by Mg in accordance with various schemes. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science S.A.
