Jean Sibelius -viulukilpailun näkyvyys, argumentointi ja viihteellisyys valtakunnallisessa lehdistössä 1965 ja 2005

Kansainvälinen Jean Sibelius -viulukilpailu on järjestetty Suomessa kymmenen kertaa vuodesta 1965 lähtien, ja se on vakiinnuttanut asemansa musiikki-instituutiona niin Suomen kulttuurielämässä kuin valtakunnallisessa mediassa. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään kilpailun reseptiota, eli millaista näkyvyyttä Sibelius-viulukilpailu on saanut valtakunnallisissa viestintävälineissä vuosina 1965 ja 2005. Journalistisesta aineistosta poimitaan esiin niitä teemoja ja ilmaisun tapoja, jotka ovat korostuneet kilpailuun liittyvissä teksteissä. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan, onko toimittajien kirjoittamien tekstien argumentointi muuttunut neljänkymmenen vuoden aikana, ja kuinka internet sekä median viihteellistyminen ovat muuttaneet journalistista kilpailua eri viestinten kesken. Tutkimusongelmia lähestytään kvalitatiivisesti viestinnän oppiaineen tutkimusmenetelmiä hyödyntäen. Ensin sisällönanalyysin avulla hahmotetaan kokonaiskäsitys aineistosta, minkä jälkeen yksittäisiin teksteihin pureudutaan argumenttianalyysin keinoin. Tutkimusaineisto on rajattu valtakunnallisiin viestintävälineisiin, joita ovat suurimmat sanoma- ja aikakauslehdet, Yleisradion kilpailuaiheiset televisio- ja radio-ohjelmat sekä viulukilpailun internet-sivut. Sanomalehdissä julkaistu aineisto on laajuutensa ja monipuolisuutensa vuoksi tarkimpana analyysikohteena; muu tutkimusaineisto täydentää lehtitekstien perusteella tehtyjä havaintoja. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että Sibelius-viulukilpailu on ollut näkyvästi esillä valtakunnallisessa lehdistössä niin vuonna 1965 kuin 2005. Molempina vuosina kilpailun näkyvyys pohjautui hyvin vahvasti painettuun sanomalehteen. Lehdistöaineistosta erottuivat selvästi kansallisuuden, rodun ja sukupuolen käsittelyn näkökulmat, vaikka kielellinen ilmaisu onkin ajan mittaan neutraloitunut. Sisällönanalyyttinen tarkastelu ja argumenttianalyysit osoittavat, että toimittajien käyttämä argumentointi on muuttunut neljän vuosikymmenen aikana. Toimittajien työnkuva on monipuolistunut, ja viihteellisyys on vähitellen soluttautunut iltapäivälehdistä niin sanottuihin laatumedioihin . Internet on tehnyt kilpailun reaaliaikaisesta seuraamisesta entistä nopeampaa ja helpompaa.

Juoksuhaudoista yhteiskuntaan : Vuosien 1965-1975 sotilaallista maanpuolustusta ja puolustusvoimia koskevan joukkotiedotuksen diskursiivinen tarkastelu

The Finnish society developed rapidly in the 1960´s and 1970´s. This was result of international trends. Development of education, urbanization and wide organization of society increased discontent towards prevailing social structure and towards the power elite. Development of technology created possibility to present radical perspectives in mass media. This caused widely spread discussions dividing opinions. The purpose of this thesis was to complement research on national defence and the Finnish Defence Forces especially between years 1965 and 1975. The task of research was to clarify how changes in society and how the significance of this change was interpreted in public discussion about national defence and development of the Defence Forces. The most essential points for this thesis turned out to be discourses structured from public discussion. Main research material consisted of approximately 35000 news, editorials, articles and opinions presented in mass media supplemented by literature, committee reports and other archival sources. Frame of reference for this thesis is based on relativistic worldview. According to this, social reality is relative and there is no single truth. Environment has significant influence on the issue how knowledge and truth are formed. Data analysis was based on critical discourse. The key objective was to clarify the effects of broad changes in society using discursive methods. One essential goal was to form order of discourse using linguistic analysis and also connect discourses to wider sociocultural custom. On this thesis I came to the conclusion that on the review period there were five significant ensembles of discourse. They consisted of several discussions focused on different themes. The discourse of official security policy aimed to define national defence and the position of the Defence Forces as parts of foreign policy. Foreign policy is often perceived as the most significant part of security policy. Historical memory, geographical position of Finland and also the state contracts, changes in international warfare, tasks of the Defence Forces and increasing critic of national defence and the difference in thinking between generations formed the discourse of security policy. In the discourse of the liability to military service, the issue was about individual responsibility to society and national defence. Resisters and unarmed defence demands, encouraged by international examples were the themes. The discourse pointed out how mass media is used to influence and forced the Defence Forces to develop the practices in public information. The discourses of democracy and politics were closer to internal development of the Defence Forces to integrate more into society. The discourse of democracy focused in changing power relationships of the Defence Forces that were known as authoritarian. Issues like conscript and personnel union activity had lot of similarities to general social development. The discourse of politics presented how the Defence Forces were pushed towards parliamentary decision making. The personnel was granted the same rights as other population. Themes related to the discourse on the will to national defence were development of mental national defence, increasing education on national defence and creation of more open public information culture. According to discourses presented above I can state, that the position of the Defence Forces in society was changed between years 1965-1975. This change was advanced by the Defence Forces reformed attitude towards mass media and public information in general. Active participation in public information important became important instead of only answering topics. This positive development created an atmosphere, that was easier for the public to understand and create own pictures of the armed forces. Due to this, I can describe that the defenders and supporters of the armed forces were stuck in their trenches, until discussions presented in discourses and themes developed the Defence Forces to be better fitting part of society. Strength characteristics of stone masonry

This paper deals with an experimental investigation on the strength of stone and stone masonry. Granitoid-gneiss is commonly used for masonry construction in India. The compressive strength of stone has been determined through 80 mm size cubes. It has been found that the compressive strength of granitoid-gneiss is greater when the load is parallel to the mineral bands. The compressive strength of stone masonry was studied through masonry prisms using 1:4 and 1:8 cement mortars. These tests have revealed that masonry strength is higher when the load applied is parallel to the mineral bands. The flexural bond strength of stone masonry walls was studied through full-scale tests. Flexural bond strength appears to play a major role in the failure of stone masonry walls.

Low formation energy and kinetic barrier of Stone-Wales defect in infinite and finite silicene

Stone-Wales (SW) defects in materials having hexagonal lattice are the most common topological defects that affect the electronic and mechanical properties. Using first principles density functional theory based calculations, we study the formation energy and kinetic barrier of SW-defect in infinite and finite sheets of silicene. The formation energies as well as the barriers in both the cases are significantly lower than those of graphene. Furthermore, compared with the infinite sheets, the energy barriers and formation energies are lower for finite sheets. However, due to low barriers these defects are expected to heal out of the finite sheets. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance analysis of boron nitride embedded armchair graphene nanoribbon metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor with Stone Wales defects

We study the performance of a hybrid Graphene-Boron Nitride armchair nanoribbon (a-GNR-BN) n-MOSFET at its ballistic transport limit. We consider three geometric configurations 3p, 3p + 1, and 3p + 2 of a-GNR-BN with BN atoms embedded on either side (2, 4, and 6 BN) on the GNR. Material properties like band gap, effective mass, and density of states of these H-passivated structures are evaluated using the Density Functional Theory. Using these material parameters, self-consistent Poisson-Schrodinger simulations are carried out under the Non Equilibrium Green's Function formalism to calculate the ballistic n-MOSFET device characteristics. For a hybrid nanoribbon of width similar to 5 nm, the simulated ON current is found to be in the range of 265 mu A-280 mu A with an ON/OFF ratio 7.1 x 10(6)-7.4 x 10(6) for a V-DD = 0.68 V corresponding to 10 nm technology node. We further study the impact of randomly distributed Stone Wales (SW) defects in these hybrid structures and only 2.5% degradation of ON current is observed for SW defect density of 3.18%. Impact of Stone-Wales and lattice vacancy defects on the electro-thermal transport of the free standing structure of metallic ZGNR

We report the effect of topological as well as lattice vacancy defects on the electro-thermal transport properties of the metallic zigzag graphene nano ribbons at their ballistic limit. We employ the density function theory-Non equilibrium green's function combination to calculate the transmission details. We then present an elaborated study considering the variation in the electrical current and the heat current transport with the change in temperature as well as the voltage gradient across the nano ribbons. The comparative analysis shows, that in the case of topological defects, such as the Stone-Wales defect, the electrical current transport is minimum. Besides, for the voltage gradient of 0.5 Volt and the temperature gradient of 300 K, the heat current transport reduces by similar to 62 % and similar to 50% for the cases of Stones-Wales defect and lattice vacancy defect respectively, compared to that of the perfect one.
