The municipality of San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala is home to approximately 5,200 people and located on the western side of the Lake Atitlán caldera. Steep slopes surround all but the eastern side of San Juan. The Lake Atitlán watershed is susceptible to many natural hazards, but most predictable are the landslides that can occur annually with each rainy season, especially during high-intensity events. Hurricane Stan hit Guatemala in October 2005; the resulting flooding and landslides devastated the Atitlán region. Locations of landslide and non-landslide points were obtained from field observations and orthophotos taken following Hurricane Stan. This study used data from multiple attributes, at every landslide and non-landslide point, and applied different multivariate analyses to optimize a model for landslides prediction during high-intensity precipitation events like Hurricane Stan. The attributes considered in this study are: geology, geomorphology, distance to faults and streams, land use, slope, aspect, curvature, plan curvature, profile curvature and topographic wetness index. The attributes were pre-evaluated for their ability to predict landslides using four different attribute evaluators, all available in the open source data mining software Weka: filtered subset, information gain, gain ratio and chi-squared. Three multivariate algorithms (decision tree J48, logistic regression and BayesNet) were optimized for landslide prediction using different attributes. The following statistical parameters were used to evaluate model accuracy: precision, recall, F measure and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The algorithm BayesNet yielded the most accurate model and was used to build a probability map of landslide initiation points. The probability map developed in this study was also compared to the results of a bivariate landslide susceptibility analysis conducted for the watershed, encompassing Lake Atitlán and San Juan. Landslides from Tropical Storm Agatha 2010 were used to independently validate this study’s multivariate model and the bivariate model. The ultimate aim of this study is to share the methodology and results with municipal contacts from the author's time as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer, to facilitate more effective future landslide hazard planning and mitigation.

OBJECTIVE Texture analysis is an alternative method to quantitatively assess MR-images. In this study, we introduce dynamic texture parameter analysis (DTPA), a novel technique to investigate the temporal evolution of texture parameters using dynamic susceptibility contrast enhanced (DSCE) imaging. Here, we aim to introduce the method and its application on enhancing lesions (EL), non-enhancing lesions (NEL) and normal appearing white matter (NAWM) in multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS We investigated 18 patients with MS and clinical isolated syndrome (CIS), according to the 2010 McDonald's criteria using DSCE imaging at different field strengths (1.5 and 3 Tesla). Tissues of interest (TOIs) were defined within 27 EL, 29 NEL and 37 NAWM areas after normalization and eight histogram-based texture parameter maps (TPMs) were computed. TPMs quantify the heterogeneity of the TOI. For every TOI, the average, variance, skewness, kurtosis and variance-of-the-variance statistical parameters were calculated. These TOI parameters were further analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by multiple Wilcoxon sum rank testing corrected for multiple comparisons. RESULTS Tissue- and time-dependent differences were observed in the dynamics of computed texture parameters. Sixteen parameters discriminated between EL, NEL and NAWM (pAVG = 0.0005). Significant differences in the DTPA texture maps were found during inflow (52 parameters), outflow (40 parameters) and reperfusion (62 parameters). The strongest discriminators among the TPMs were observed in the variance-related parameters, while skewness and kurtosis TPMs were in general less sensitive to detect differences between the tissues. CONCLUSION DTPA of DSCE image time series revealed characteristic time responses for ELs, NELs and NAWM. This may be further used for a refined quantitative grading of MS lesions during their evolution from acute to chronic state. DTPA discriminates lesions beyond features of enhancement or T2-hypersignal, on a numeric scale allowing for a more subtle grading of MS-lesions.

Proton therapy is growing increasingly popular due to its superior dose characteristics compared to conventional photon therapy. Protons travel a finite range in the patient body and stop, thereby delivering no dose beyond their range. However, because the range of a proton beam is heavily dependent on the tissue density along its beam path, uncertainties in patient setup position and inherent range calculation can degrade thedose distribution significantly. Despite these challenges that are unique to proton therapy, current management of the uncertainties during treatment planning of proton therapy has been similar to that of conventional photon therapy. The goal of this dissertation research was to develop a treatment planning method and a planevaluation method that address proton-specific issues regarding setup and range uncertainties. Treatment plan designing method adapted to proton therapy: Currently, for proton therapy using a scanning beam delivery system, setup uncertainties are largely accounted for by geometrically expanding a clinical target volume (CTV) to a planning target volume (PTV). However, a PTV alone cannot adequately account for range uncertainties coupled to misaligned patient anatomy in the beam path since it does not account for the change in tissue density. In order to remedy this problem, we proposed a beam-specific PTV (bsPTV) that accounts for the change in tissue density along the beam path due to the uncertainties. Our proposed method was successfully implemented, and its superiority over the conventional PTV was shown through a controlled experiment.. Furthermore, we have shown that the bsPTV concept can be incorporated into beam angle optimization for better target coverage and normal tissue sparing for a selected lung cancer patient. Treatment plan evaluation method adapted to proton therapy: The dose-volume histogram of the clinical target volume (CTV) or any other volumes of interest at the time of planning does not represent the most probable dosimetric outcome of a given plan as it does not include the uncertainties mentioned earlier. Currently, the PTV is used as a surrogate of the CTV’s worst case scenario for target dose estimation. However, because proton dose distributions are subject to change under these uncertainties, the validity of the PTV analysis method is questionable. In order to remedy this problem, we proposed the use of statistical parameters to quantify uncertainties on both the dose-volume histogram and dose distribution directly. The robust plan analysis tool was successfully implemented to compute both the expectation value and its standard deviation of dosimetric parameters of a treatment plan under the uncertainties. For 15 lung cancer patients, the proposed method was used to quantify the dosimetric difference between the nominal situation and its expected value under the uncertainties.

In France, farmers commission about 250,000 soil-testing analyses per year to assist them managing soil fertility. The number and diversity of origin of the samples make these analyses an interesting and original information source regarding cultivated topsoil variability. Moreover, these analyses relate to several parameters strongly influenced by human activity (macronutrient contents, pH...), for which existing cartographic information is not very relevant. Compiling the results of these analyses into a database makes it possible to re-use these data within both a national and temporal framework. A database compilation relating to data collected over the period 1990-2009 has been recently achieved. So far, commercial soil-testing laboratories approved by the Ministry of Agriculture have provided analytical results from more than 2,000,000 samples. After the initial quality control stage, analytical results from more than 1,900,000 samples were available in the database. The anonymity of the landholders seeking soil analyses is perfectly preserved, as the only identifying information stored is the location of the nearest administrative city to the sample site. We present in this dataset a set of statistical parameters of the spatial distributions for several agronomic soil properties. These statistical parameters are calculated for 4 different nested spatial entities (administrative areas: e.g. regions, departments, counties and agricultural areas) and for 4 time periods (1990-1994, 1995-1999, 2000-2004, 2005-2009). Two kinds of agronomic soil properties are available: the firs one correspond to the quantitative variables like the organic carbon content and the second one corresponds to the qualitative variables like the texture class. For each spatial unit and temporal period, we calculated the following statistics stets: the first set is calculated for the quantitative variables and corresponds to the number of samples, the mean, the standard deviation and, the 2-,4-,10-quantiles; the second set is calculated for the qualitative variables and corresponds to the number of samples, the value of the dominant class, the number of samples of the dominant class, the second dominant class, the number of samples of the second dominant class.

In this study multibeam angular backscatter data acquired in the eastern slope of the Porcupine Seabight are analysed. Processing of the angular backscatter data using the 'NRGCOR' software was made for 29 locations comprising different geological provinces like: carbonate mounds, buried mounds, seafloor channels, and inter-channel areas. A detailed methodology is developed to produce a map of angle-invariant (normalized) backscatter data by correcting the local angular backscatter values. The present paper involves detailed processing steps and related technical aspects of the normalization approach. The presented angle-invariant backscatter map possesses 12 dB dynamic range in terms of grey scale. A clear distinction is seen between the mound dominated northern area (Belgica province) and the Gollum channel seafloor at the southern end of the site. Qualitative analyses of the calculated mean backscatter values i.e., grey scale levels, utilizing angle-invariant backscatter data generally indicate backscatter values are highest (lighter grey scale) in the mound areas followed by buried mounds. The backscatter values are lowest in the inter-channel areas (lowest grey scale level). Moderate backscatter values (medium grey level) are observed from the Gollum and Kings channel data, and significant variability within the channel seafloor provinces. The segmentation of the channel seafloor provinces are made based on the computed grey scale levels for further analyses based on the angular backscatter strength. Three major parameters are utilized to classify four different seafloor provinces of the Porcupine Seabight by employing a semi-empirical method to analyse multibeam angular backscatter data. The predicted backscatter response which has been computed at 20° is the highest for the mound areas. The coefficient of variation (CV) of the mean backscatter response is also the highest for the mound areas. Interestingly, the slope value of the buried mound areas are found to be the highest. However, the channel seafloor of moderate backscatter response presents the lowest slope and CV values. A critical examination of the inter-channel areas indicates less variability within the estimated three parameters.

We present grain size, granulometric statistical parameters, and calcium carbonate content of sediment samples from the summit and east and west flanks of southern Hydrate Ridge (Sites 1244-1250). These data are compared with magnetic susceptibility measurements from the same intervals. Bulk and clay mineralogy from Sites 1244 (east flank), 1247 (west flank), and 1250 (summit) are also presented. The integration of these data allows us to characterize the main sedimentary facies and composition of the Quaternary age sediments from southern Hydrate Ridge.

During the Geological Expedition to the Shackleton Range, Antarctica (GEISHA) in 1987/88, samples were taken from twenty-one basaltic dykes for palaeomagnetic investigations. The directions of characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) of the dykes were determined by thermal and alternating-field demagnetization of 268 cores drilled from the specimens collected. Moreover, on account of the hydrothermal and sometimes low-grade metamorphism of the dyke rock and the resulting partial modification of the primary magnetization, not only were comprehensive magnetic studies carried out, but also ore-microscopic examination. Only thus was it possible to achieve a reasonable assessment and interpretation of the remanent magnetization. Jurassic and Silurian-Devonian ages were confirmed for the dykes of the northern and northwestern Shackleton Range by comparison of the paleopole positions calculated on the basis of the ChRM of the dykes with the known pole positions for the eastern Antarctic, as well as with polar-wandering curves for Gondwana. Radiometric ages were also determined far some of the dykes. Middle and Late Proterozoic ages are postulated far the dykes in the Read Mountains. Conclusions on the geotectonic relations of the Shackleton Range can also be drawn from the palaeomagnetic data. It has been postulated that the main strike direction, which differs distinctly from that of the Ross orogen, is due to rotation or displacement of the Shackleton Range crustal block; however, this was not corroborated. The pole positions for the Shackleton Range agree with those of rocks of the same age from other areas of East Antarctica and its positions in the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic polar-wandering path for Gondwana are evidence against the idea of rotation and rather suggest that the position of the Shakleton Range crustal block is autochthonous.

In the last decades, a striking amount of hydrographic data, covering the most part of Mediterranean basin, have been generated by the efforts made to characterize the oceanography and ecology of the basin. On the other side, the improvement in technologies, and the consequent perfecting of sampling and analytical techniques, provided data even more reliable than in the past. Nutrient data enter fully in this context, but suffer of the fact of having been produced by a large number of uncoordinated research programs and of being often deficient in quality control, with data bases lacking of intercalibration. In this study we present a computational procedure based on robust statistical parameters and on the physical dynamic properties of the Mediterranean sea and its morphological characteristics, to partially overcome the above limits in the existing data sets. Through a data pre filtering based on the outlier analysis, and thanks to the subsequent shape analysis, the procedure identifies the inconsistent data and for each basin area identifies a characteristic set of shapes (vertical profiles). Rejecting all the profiles that do not follow any of the spotted shapes, the procedure identifies all the reliable profiles and allows us to obtain a data set that can be considered more internally consistent than the existing ones.

The data acquired by Remote Sensing systems allow obtaining thematic maps of the earth's surface, by means of the registered image classification. This implies the identification and categorization of all pixels into land cover classes. Traditionally, methods based on statistical parameters have been widely used, although they show some disadvantages. Nevertheless, some authors indicate that those methods based on artificial intelligence, may be a good alternative. Thus, fuzzy classifiers, which are based on Fuzzy Logic, include additional information in the classification process through based-rule systems. In this work, we propose the use of a genetic algorithm (GA) to select the optimal and minimum set of fuzzy rules to classify remotely sensed images. Input information of GA has been obtained through the training space determined by two uncorrelated spectral bands (2D scatter diagrams), which has been irregularly divided by five linguistic terms defined in each band. The proposed methodology has been applied to Landsat-TM images and it has showed that this set of rules provides a higher accuracy level in the classification process

Landcover is subject to continuous changes on a wide variety of temporal and spatial scales. Those changes produce significant effects in human and natural activities. Maintaining an updated spatial database with the occurred changes allows a better monitoring of the Earth?s resources and management of the environment. Change detection (CD) techniques using images from different sensors, such as satellite imagery, aerial photographs, etc., have proven to be suitable and secure data sources from which updated information can be extracted efficiently, so that changes can also be inventoried and monitored. In this paper, a multisource CD methodology for multiresolution datasets is applied. First, different change indices are processed, then different thresholding algorithms for change/no_change are applied to these indices in order to better estimate the statistical parameters of these categories, finally the indices are integrated into a change detection multisource fusion process, which allows generating a single CD result from several combination of indices. This methodology has been applied to datasets with different spectral and spatial resolution properties. Then, the obtained results are evaluated by means of a quality control analysis, as well as with complementary graphical representations. The suggested methodology has also been proved efficiently for identifying the change detection index with the higher contribution.

SUMMARY The diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder caused by a poor or null insulin secretion or a reduced sensibility to insulin. Diabetes is a chronic disease with a higher prevalence in the industrialized countries, mainly due to obesity, the sedentary life and endocrine disfunctions connected with the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is a self-immune disease where the beta cells of the pancreas, which are the responsible of secreting insulin, are damaged. Hence, it is necessary an exogenous delivery of insulin. The Type 1 diabetic patient has to follow a therapy with subcutaneous insulin administration which should be adjusted to his/her metabolic needs and life style. This therapy tries to mimic the insulin profile of a non-pathological pancreas. Current technology lets the development of the so-called endocrine artificial pancreas that would provide accuracy, efficiency and safety to patients, in regards to the glycemic control normalization and reduction of the risk of hypoglycemic. In addition, it would help the patient not to be so concerned about his disease. The artificial pancreas has a continuous glucose sensor, an insulin infusion pump and a control algorithm, that calculates the insulin infusion using the glucose as main information. This project presents a method of control in semi-closed-loop, through an expert fuzzy system based on rules. The fuzzy regulation is based on the human language ambiguity. This uncertainty serves for construction of some rules that represent the human language besides it is the system that controls a process, in this case the glucoregulatory system. This project is focus on the design of a fuzzy controller that, using variables like glucose insulin and diet, will be able to restore the pancreas endocrine function with technology. The algorithm assessment has mainly been done through experiments in simulation using a population of synthetic patients, evaluating the results with first order statistical parameters and some other more specific such as the Kovatchev risk index, to compare later these results with the ones obtained in others previous methods of control. The results demonstrate that the fuzzy control (FBPC) improves the glycemic control connected with a predictive expert system based on Booleans rules (pBRES). The FBPC is always able to reduce the maximum level of glucose and increase the minimum level as compared with pBRES but it is in unadjusted therapies where FBPC is especially strong, it manages to decrease the maximum level of glucose and insulin used by 8,64 mg/dl and 3,92 UI respectively, also increases the value of minimum glucose by 3,32 mg/dl, getting 15,33 samples more inside the 80-110 mg/dl glucose rank. Therefore we can conclude that FBPC achieves a better glycemic control than the controller pBRES doing it especially effective, robust and safe in conditions of mismatch basal therapy and with a great capacity for future improvements.

________________________________________________________________________________ Both the subject of this research, its objectives, fundamentals, materials selected and experimental part to achieve, have all been promoted by the situation and the state of reinforced concrete constructions that began performing in Spain from 1975, with concrete and mortars cement containing fly ash up to 20 %, in principle, and later, up to 35 % to its content of Portland cement, which and against expected, demanded a need to improve their performance, especially due to an unexpectedly low level of durability of some works built with them, despite, however, its apparent benefits of all kinds are ascribed to them. Ultimately, the natural or artificial pozzolanic additions, such as fly ash specially, referred to above, have been used with regulation to manufacture cements and/or its derivatives, concretes, mortars, cement pastes, in the most industrialized countries. More than three decades ago, under the same conditions and identical construction mainly uses concretes and mortars plain Portland cement, besides coming, given that use of these waste materials, industrial by-products today for environmental and/or economic issues. For this reason, this Doctoral Thesis aims to answer properly and schematically (in the form of flow chart), the criteria to be taken into account when selection and characterization standardized for these active mineral additions, especially prior to choosing and use in the so-called Portland Cement (PC) pozzolan, or with fly ash or with calcined shales or with calcined pozzolans or with silica fume or PC mixed or pozzolanic cement or compound cement, for that such pathology problems will not occur when reinforced concretes nor mass concretes are used for building. Hence the very particular and special focus about this research, having confined only to the natural or artificial pozzolans, considering them all, regardless of their origin, approach as materials consisting of small crystalline fractions randomly distributed in a largely vitreous and/or amorphous matrix, which confers their reactivity with calcium hydroxide in the form of slaked lime or portlandite from PC. In turn, these vitreous and/or amorphous fractions consist in its greater part, by reactive silica, SiO2r-, reactive alumina, Al2O3r-, and reactive iron oxide, Fe2O3r-, which also receive, in conjunction, the specific name of "hydraulic factors" of the pozzolan. Usually, they all differs in quantity of their respective total contents of the SiO2 (%), Al2O3 (%) and Fe2O3 (%) determined the pozzolan by alkaline fusion by means of standard procedures. Of the three above-mentioned oxides reagents and from the technical point of view, the most important for its increased presence in every one of the natural or artificial pozzolans and also significance in the chemical durability that can get them to give the concrete mortar or cement paste which contain them, are SiO2r- and Al2O3r-. From the first two, the SiO2r- reacts with portlandite only, released in the hydration of the PC (and with Ca(OH)2), to form C-S-H gels, transformed in tobermorites or jennites later on, similar to C-S-H gels also originating from the alite and belite hydration in the CP. From the standardization criteria point of view, the presence of this silicic fraction in pozzolans is regulated at first, by the European standard EN 197-1, in general, also being referred by the EN 450-1:2006, in the context of the fly ash in addition to the concrete, as a "fine powder of spherical particles mainly crystalline form. It is from the combustion of pulverized coal, which have pozzolanic properties and is mainly composed of SiO2 and Al2O3". In addition and according to the EN 197-1 standard, the reactive silica content (which can be defined and determined in accordance with EN 197-1 standard or its UNE 80225 standard) must not be lower than 25 % of its mass. Meanwhile, considerable experimental studies by Talero and Talero et al, have shown that if the pozzolan is not adequate in quality nor quantity, the durability of cement that is part and, therefore, of its derivative products, concretes, mortars and pastes cement, can become abnormally low because its reactive alumina, Al2O3r- (%), content or tetra- or penta-coordinated alumina which involves itself in a very direct and totally mixed and conflicting results even at all aggressive chemical attack natural to produce to the concrete, mortar and paste with inadequate natural and/or artificial pozzolans, such as those from the selenitous land and waters (sulfates, strikes if the material itself concrete, mortar and paste that contain them, for rapid forming ettringite form, ett-rf, which can even cause rapid gypsum attack to said concrete). In contrast, sea spray and de-icing salts (chlorides strikes the reinforced steel concrete causing them electrochemical corrosion by "bite", although in that other chemical attack, such Al2O3r- causes rapid Friedel's salt formation, Fs-rf, too, to cause protector effect of the electrochemical corrosion of reinforcements for these chlorides), seawater (mutual aggressive action of chlorides and sulfates), carbonation, alkali-silica reaction, and, in addition, to influence the release of hydration heat, as well as in the rheological behavior of the pastes, etc., decreasing/shorting them thus their expected durability and sometimes even very seriously. But the most ironic thing is, that despite its referral totally opposed, compared to sulfates and chlorides, behaviour, - far not available is, a chemical analysis method for its quantitative determination, which is also relatively simple in operation, accurate, precise, rapid response, from a technical point of view for building (no more than 28 days), repeatable, reproducible, not involving danger to life safety of the people who need to manipulate and implement, economic, and also serve for both scientific research and technical side, and - has yet to be any chemical specification that sets maximum levels for Al2O3r-(%) in the natural or artificial pozzolan to be added to the cement and/or to the concrete that will be subject to a particularly aggressive chemical attack from those mentioned above, and in particular, to sulphates, chlorides or sea water. And for the sake of and justification of this need, it has to be said that the current Spanish Instruction for Structural Concrete EHE-08 does not provide any specification on "hydraulic factors" in general, nor the content of Al2O3r- (%) in fly ash, very particular, as Article 30º "Additions", or any other Article, although does provide, however, other chemical specifications lacking the necessary meaning in terms of the message Chemical Durability mentioned, nor the Article 37º which and for greater sake, is paradoxically entitled "Durability of the concrete and of their reinforcements". It has also not contemplated in the latest version just released from EN 197-1 standard entitled "Cement Part 1: Composition, specifications and conformity criteria for common cements". Nor, in EN 450-1:2006 entitled "Fly ash for concrete Part 1: Definitions, specifications and conformity criteria", nor by current Spanish Instruction for Cement Reception, RC-08, nor the ASTM C618-03 Standard either. The only chemical specification that both Standards, European and American, refer is one that says that the sum of the total contents of SiO2 (%), Al2O3 (%) and Fe2O3 (%) of natural and artificial pozzolan, must be greater than or equal to 70 % , defining pozzolans thus: "siliceous or aluminous and siliceous materials, which themselves do not have any cementitious value but finely divided and in the presence of moisture it reacts with calcium hydroxide at ordinary temperatures to form compounds possessing cementitious properties". Consequently and according to everything related before, the primary objective of this Doctoral Thesis has been: To design and start-up a new quantitative analytical method of technical utility (the maximum test duration is not more than 28 days), to determine the content of reactive alumina content, Al2O3r- (%), vitreous or amorphous alumina, of natural and artificial pozzolans. And once designed, validate at repeatability level and in accordance with appropriate statistical parameters with special emphasis on the acceptance criteria established by the American Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). And to achieve this, the innovation of this research has been based on the following general principles, namely: - All the alumina in any pozzolan, natural or artificial, that can be attacked, dissolved and leached by portlandite or calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, in aqueous medium, is considered reactive alumina, Al2O3r-. - This aluminic fraction of natural or artificial pozzolan to analyze and study, has to be in such physical-chemical state that it can react in the presence of calcium hydroxide, sodium chloride and water status and to cause monochloro-aluminate hydrated calcium, C3A·CaCl2·10H2O or Friedel's salt. Moreover, such physical-chemical state of the pozzolan must be consistent with the definition of reactive alumina adopted in this research because of the actual performance of chemical durability that can reach confer on blended cements and their derivatives, concretes, mortars and pastes that are manufactured with the same. - The originality of this new analytical method, compared to the other methods for determining reactive alumina existing (collected in abbreviated form in the state of the art of this report), is the quantification of such aluminic fraction of natural or artificial pozzolans is performed by stoichiometric calculation based on this, in the chemical reaction of Friedel's salt formation after 28 days of the analysis of saline-basic hydration accelerated natural or artificial pozzolan also performed in this research, and the quantitative determination of the Friedel's salt has been performed by two instrumental analytical techniques known as thermogravimetric analysis (variant I), and Rietveld method with X-ray powder diffraction (variant II). - The chemical reaction of Friedel's salt formation after 28 days of accelerated saline-basic hydration of the selected natural and artificial pozzolan, was optimized to ensure that the single chemical compound of aluminium and chlorine formed was Friedel's salt only (dosing for this purpose in amount suitable chemical reagents: Ca(OH)2, NaCl and distilled water), and, on the other hand, maintaining the appropriate compromise between the highest yield from the chemical reaction (attack, dissolution and leaching in 28 days, all reactive alumina of pozzolan) and to accelerate the etching media, which were 40°C temperature, constant stirring and sealing the reactor. - The applicability and selectivity of the new analytical method, the subject of this Doctoral Thesis, was studied with a series of Spanish natural and artificial pozzolans, siliceous or siliceous and aluminous in nature, which were as follows: M0 (metakaolin 0), M1 (M0 with 50 % quartz), L and C (natural pozzolans of the Canary Islands), CV10 (fly ash 10), CV17 (fly ash 17), A (natural pozzolan of Almagro), O (natural pozzolan of Olot), and HS (silica fume). - All mineral admixtures were selected satisfied the physical and chemical requirements proposed to consider them as pozzolan, which was mandatory, so its Al2O3r- (%) content can determine by the new analytical method. These conditions were as follows: adequate degree of fineness of grind or average particle size (according to EN 451-2 standard), have been analyzed chemically (according to EN 196-2 or ASTM C311 standards), in order to determine their total contents of SiO2 (%), Al2O3 (%) and Fe2O3 (%), mainly, having also determined its reactive silica content, SiO2r- (%) (UNE 80225 standard), and fulfilled with testing of pozzolanicity or Frattini test (according to EN 196-5 standard) at 28 days age at least. The last criteria was mandatory until 1988, for any natural and artificial pozzolan to a factory intended to introduce cements in the manufacturing process of a new Portland cement type CEM IV pozzolanic additions, and with this Doctoral Thesis has made is to be used once again mandatory. And the results obtained using the new analytical method, of the Al2O3r- (%) content for each selected pozzolan, were as follows: - by its variant I: M0 29.9 % , M1 16.9 % , CV10 11.4 % , L 12.3 % , C 12.6 % , A 8.0 % , CV17 9.5 % and O 6.3 % of Al2O3r-, and - by its variant II: M0 30.7 % , M1 15.4 % , CV10 14.7% % , L 11.8 % , C 11.1 % , A 8.9 % , CV17 9.6 % and O 6.8 % of Al2O3r-. Finally, they would all be further contrasted by the calibration and validation of new analytical method, with reference values obtained from these same natural and artificial pozzolans, which had been given by the method of Florentin, consisting of attack, dissolve and leached with a basic attack (with Ca(OH)2 in aqueous medium and laboratory temperature, having also been its duration up to 1 year), followed by another acid attack (HCl, d = 1.12), all soluble aluminic fraction of pozzolan, and in particular their total content of reactive alumina, Al2O3r-(%), was this time as follows: M0 28.8 %, M1 16.7 %, CV10 9.7 %, L 11.2 %, C 12.2 %, A 13.0 %, CV17 10.6 % and O 9.5 % (and their siliceous and iron contents that are at par). This validation has shown on the new analytical method is more reliable than Florentin method, so it turns out to be entirely appropriate to get the results that have been tried by the same, besides providing them a relatively short space of time (28 days at most) and reasonably no high economic cost (unless mistake -free direct and indirect taxes, such economic cost would be between 800.00 - 900.00 €/pozzolan (most likely case), and about an one-third part around, in the event that the maximum age of the accelerated test is 7 days only (less likely case). So it is technically acceptable, to consider the range of possible variability of concentrations or contents pozzolan analyte with validation parameters such as: linearity (the results obtained are directly proportional to the instrumental response signal received), excellent sensitivity and accuracy, satisfactory repeatability values from the contents of each and Al2O3r- (%) each selected pozzolan, confirming therefore universal use. Finally, the advantages of the new analytical method over existing methods compiled from literature (Florentin method , the Lopez Ruiz method -HF and HNO3 40 % 2N-, the method of Murat and Driouche for clays -0.5M HF-, the method of Arjuan, Roy and Silbee for fly ash -HF 1 %- and its modification by Fernández-Jiménez et al -HF 1 %, 27Al MAS NMR and XRD (Rietveld method)-, and the method for determining the SiO2r-/Al2O3r- clay and fly ash ratio of Santaquiteria Ruiz et al -HF 1 %, NaOH 8M and ICP-AES-) are primarily and relatively short time get the result intended answer (28 days at most), its considerable lower cost, free from danger to the life safety of the people who need to manipulate and put in practice as well as its universality and selectivity, since it is applicable for all types of natural or artificial pozzolans, as it has been shown by the results of selected natural and artificial pozzolanic materials and analyzed in a range of analyte concentrations -reactive alumina, Al2O3r- (%) content- from 5 % to 30 % by mass, this range, on the other hand, includes virtually ALL existing transnational market in natural and artificial pozzolans and still exist. Therefore and in accordance with the above, the new analytical method is already performed by the variant I or II, because, - firstly, grounded to experimental approaches concerning its experimental procedure -"modus operandi"- which has been applied to a wide range of natural and artificial pozzolans, and - secondly, due to the quality of the results obtained with a great degree of accuracy and repeatability, it has been shown to possess significant scientific value in the research, but especially technical value -for quality control of natural and artificial pozzolans commonly added to Portland cement factory and/or directly to their concrete and mortar in plant-, and also be representative enough of the values obtained by the same probable chemical durability that each of them can reach out to give the concrete mortar and paste to which it belongs, as well as proper amount of partial replacement of Portland cement. To get in line with their own chemical-physical or physical-chemical features which can come to confer, as its chemical character (aluminic, silicic-aluminic, aluminic-silicic, aluminic-ferric-silicic or ferric-silicic), form and medium size of its particle is. Finally, the new analytical method has proven to meet all mandatory requirements established by ISO/IEC 17025 on the quality and reliability of new methods or analytical procedures are not standardized yet, in order to be considered appropriate this new analytical method, in this Doctoral Thesis it is to be proposed in the near future, before the corresponding AENOR (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification) Commission, to start a procedure for certification and standardization.

This paper presents a multi-stage algorithm for the dynamic condition monitoring of a gear. The algorithm provides information referred to the gear status (fault or normal condition) and estimates the mesh stiffness per shaft revolution in case that any abnormality is detected. In the first stage, the analysis of coefficients generated through discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) is proposed as a fault detection and localization tool. The second stage consists in establishing the mesh stiffness reduction associated with local failures by applying a supervised learning mode and coupled with analytical models. To do this, a multi-layer perceptron neural network has been configured using as input features statistical parameters sensitive to torsional stiffness decrease and derived from wavelet transforms of the response signal. The proposed method is applied to the gear condition monitoring and results show that it can update the mesh dynamic properties of the gear on line.

ABSTRACT. Being able to classify the applications that generate the traffic flows in an Internet network allows companies and organisms to implement efficient resource management policies such as prohibition of specific applications or prioritization of certain application traffic, looking for an optimization of the available bandwidth. The proliferation of new applications and new technics in the last years has made it more difficult to use well-known values assigned by the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), like UDP and TCP ports, to identify the traffic. Also, P2P networks and data encapsulation over HTTP and HTTPS traffic has increased the necessity to improve these traffic analysis technics. The aim of this project is to develop a number of techniques that make us able to classify the traffic with more than the simple observation of the well-known ports. There are some proposals that have been created to cover this necessity; Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) tries to find signatures in the packets reading the information contained in them, the payload, looking for patterns that can be used to characterize the applications to which that traffic belongs; Machine Learning procedures work with statistical analysis of the flows, trying to generate an automatic process that learns from those statistical parameters and calculate the likelihood of a flow pertaining to a certain application; Heuristic Techniques, finally, are based in the intuition or the knowledge of the researcher himself about the traffic being analyzed that can help him to characterize the traffic. Specifically, the use of some of the techniques previously mentioned in combination with data mining technics such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Clustering (grouping) of the flows extracted from network traffic captures are proposed. An iterative process based in success and failure will be needed to configure these data mining techniques looking for a reliable traffic classification. The perfect result would be the one in which the traffic flows of each application is grouped correctly in each cluster or in clusters that contain group of applications of similar nature. To do this, network traffic captures will be created in a controlled environment in which every capture is classified and known to pertain to a specific application. Then, for each capture, all the flows will be extracted. These flows will be used to extract from them information such as date and arrival time or the IP length of the packets inside them. This information will be then loaded to a MySQL database where all the packets defining a flow will be classified and also, each flow will be assigned to its specific application. All the information obtained from the packets will be used to generate statistical parameters in order to describe each flow in the best possible way. After that, data mining techniques previously mentioned (PCA and Clustering) will be used on these parameters making use of the software RapidMiner. Finally, the results obtained from the data mining will be compared with the real classification of the flows that can be obtained from the database. A Confusion Matrix will be used for the comparison, letting us measure the veracity of the developed classification process.

ABSTRACT. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by the insufficient or null production of insulin from the pancreas or by a reduced sensitivity to this hormone, which helps glucose get to the tissues and the nervous system to provide energy. Diabetes has more prevalence in developed countries due to multiple factors, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle and endocrine dysfunctions related to the pancreas. Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease in which beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin are destroyed, and exogenous insulin delivery is required to control blood glucose levels. The patient must follow a therapy with insulin administered by the subcutaneous route that should be adjusted to the metabolic needs and lifestyle of the patient. This therapy tries to imitate the insulin profile of a non-pathological pancreas. Current technology can adress the development of the so-called “endocrine artificial pancreas” (EAP) that would provide accuracy, efficacy and safety in the application of insulin therapies and will allow patients a higher level of independence from their disease. Patients are currently tied to constant decision making. The EAP consists of a continuous glucose sensor, an insulin infusion pump and a control algorithm that computes the insulin amount that has to be infused using the glucose as the main source of information. This work shows modifications to the control method in closed loop proposed in a previous project. The reference controller is composed by a boolean basal controller and a postprandial rule-based fuzzy controller which inherits the rules from the basal controller. The postprandial controller administrates 50% of the bolus (calculated from the amount of carbohydrates that the patient is going to ingest) in the moment of the intake warning, and distributes the remaining in later instants. The goal is to achieve an optimum regulation of the glucose level in the postprandial period. In order to reduce hyperglycemia in the postprandial period an insulin transport is carried out. It consists on a feedforward of the basal insulin from the postprandial period, which will be administered with a variable percentage of the manual bolus. This percentage would be linked with the metabolic state of the patient in moments previous to the intake. Furthermore, the knowledge base is going to be modified in order to fit the controller performance to the postprandial period. This project is focused on the improvement of the previous controller, modifying two aspects: the postprandial controller inference, and the automatic decision making on the percentage of the manual bolus and the transport. A fuzzy controller with a new inference has been proposed and has been adapted to the postprandial period. A fuzzy inference has been added, which modifies both the amount of manual bolus to administrate at the intake warning and the amount of basal insulin to transport to the prandial bolus. The algorithm assessment has been done through simulation experiments using a synthetic population of 10 patients in the UVA/PADOVA simulator, evaluating the results with statistical parameters for further comparison with those obtained with the previous control method. After comparing results it can be concluded that the new postprandial controller, combined with the automatic decision making, carries out a better glycemic control in the postprandial period, decreasing levels of hyperglycemia.
