Surface behaviour is of paramount importance as failure and degradation tend to initiate from the surface. Electroless composite coating (NiP/SiC) was developed using SiC as reinforcing particles. As heat treatment plays a vital role in electroless nickel coating owing to the changes in microstructure, phase structure and mechanical properties, an insight at the interface changes in chemistry and micromechanical behaviour was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and microindentation techniques. Corrosion performance was analysed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Absence of zinc and migration of copper at the interface was detected. Brittleness and microcracks was seen long the interface when indenting at load of 500 gf (Vickers). Corrosion performance is weaker than particles free coating. However, a thin blanket of NiP could enhance the resistance to corrosive medium.

Introduction: Plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1) is a physiological modulator of fibrinolysis. High plasma PAI-1 is associated with the 4G/5G promoter polymorphism and with increased cardiovascular risk. Here we explored the role of platelets in regulating expression of the PAI-1 gene in monocytes. Methods: Blood from PAI-1 4G/5G genotyped volunteers (n=6) was incubated with the platelet GPVI-specific agonist, cross-linked collagen related peptide (CRP-XL), in the presence or absence of Mab 9E1 that blocks the binding of P-selectin to PSGL1. Monocytes were isolated by +ve selection on CD14 beads and monocyte PAI-1 mRNA expression was measured by real-time PCR. Results: Activation of platelets with CRP-XL resulted in platelets binding to >70% of monocytes and was accompanied by >5000-fold induction of PAI-1 mRNA, peaking at 4hrs. PAI-1 expression was independent of the 4G/5G genotype. Blocking the binding of platelets to monocytes enhanced PAI-1 induction (p<0.05 at 4 hrs). Incubation of isolated monocytes with the releasate from CRP-XL stimulated platelets also led to PAI-1 mRNA expression. The platelet secretome contains >100 different proteins. To identify the soluble factor(s) responsible for induction of PAI-1, neutralizing antibodies to likely candidates were added to monocytes incubated with the platelet releasate. Anti- TGF-beta inhibited platelet releasate-mediated PAI-1 mRNA induction by >80%. Monocyte PAI-1 was also induced by stimulation of PSGL-1 with a P-selectin-Fc chimera, in the absence of platelets, which was also blocked by the TGF-beta antibody. Conclusions: These results suggest that platelets induce PAI-1 mRNA in monocytes predominantly via TGF-beta, released from both platelets, and monocytes via activation by PSGL-1 signalling. This stimulation is independent of 4G/5G genotype

In the light of the dramatically changed social structure of women, surprisingly little gender differences have been found in temporal changes of effects of social origin on occupational class. Using a recently developed methodological approach and Swiss data on birth cohorts from 1925 to 1978, this paper takes a closer look by considering not only the total effect of social origin but also the individual elements of the indirect effect mediated by individual’s education. It finds that this indirect path have changed indeed differently for women and men, but the findings on the direct effect remain mixed, partially because this path seems to be especially sensitive to the conceptualization of social class.

Cost and energy consumption related to obtaining polysilicon impact significantly on the total photovoltaic module cost and its energy payback time. Process simplifications can be performed, leading to cost reductions. Nowadays, among several approaches currently pursued to produce the so called Solar Grade Silicon, the chemical route, named Siemens process, is the dominant one. At the Instituto de Energía Solar research on this topic is focused on the chemical route, in particular on the polysilicon deposition step by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from Trichlorosilane through a laboratory prototype. Valuable information about the phenomena involved in the polysilicon deposition process and the operating conditions is obtained from our experiments. A particular feature of our system is the inclusion of a mass spectrometer. The present work comprises spectra characterization of the polysilicon deposition chemical reaction, temperature and inlet gas mixture composition influence on the deposition rate and analysis of polysilicon deposition conditions for the ?pop-corn' phenomenon to appear, based on experimental experience (Actas de la Special Issue: E-MRS 2012 Spring Meeting ?
