Porous titanium samples were manufactured using the 3D printing and sintering method in order to determine the effects of final sintering temperature on morphology and mechanical properties. Cylindrical samples were printed and split into groups according to a final sintering temperature (FST). Irregular geometry samples were also printed and split into groups according to their FST. The cylindrical samples were used to determine part shrinkage, in compressive tests to provide stress-strain data, in microCT scans to provide internal morphology data and for optical microscopy to determine surface morphology. All of the samples were used in microhardness testing to establish the hardness. Below 1100 C FST, shrinkage was in the region of 20% but increased to approximately 30% by a FST of 1300 C. Porosity varied from a maximum of approximately 65% at the surface to the region of 30% internally. Between 97 and 99% of the internal porosity is interconnected. Average pore size varied between 24 µm at the surface and 19 µm internally. Sample hardness increased to in excess of 300 HV0.05 with increasing FST while samples with an FST of below 1250 C produced an elastic-brittle stress/strain curve and samples above this displayed elastic-plastic behaviour. Yield strength increased significantly through the range of sintering temperatures while the Young's modulus remained fairly consistent. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Porous poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) scaffolds of 85 per cent and 90 per cent porosity are prepared using polymer sintering and porogen leaching method. Different weight fractions of 10 per cent, 30 per cent, and 50 per cent of hydroxyapatite (HA) are added to the PLA to control the acidity and degradation rate. The three-dimensional (3D) morphology and surface porosity are tested using micro-computer tomography (micro-CT), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that the surface porosity does not change on the addition of HA. The micro-CT examinations show a slight decrease in the pore size and increase in the wall thickness accompanied by reduced anisotropy for the scaffolds containing HA. Scanning electron micrographs show detectable interconnected pores for the scaffold with pure PLA. Addition of the HA results in agglomeration of the HA particles and reduced leaching of the porogen. Compression tests of the scaffold identify three stages in the stress-strain curve. The addition of HA results in a reduction in the modulus of the scaffold at the first stage of elastic bending of the wall, but this is reversed for the second and third stages of collapse of the wall and densification in the compression tests. In the scaffolds with 85 per cent porosity, the addition of a high percentage of HA could result in 70 per cent decrease in stiffness in the first stage, 200 per cent increase in stiffness in the second stage, and 20 per cent increase in stiffness in the third stage. The results of these tests are compared with the Gibson cellular material model that is proposed for prediction of the behaviour of cellular material under compression. The pH and molecular weight changes are tracked for the scaffolds within a period of 35 days. The addition of HA keeps the pH in the alkaline region, which results in higher rate of degradation at an early period of observation, followed by a reduced rate of degradation later in the process. The final molecular weight is higher for the scaffolds with HA than for scaffolds of pure PLA. The manufactured scaffolds offer acceptable properties in terms of the pore size range and interconnectivity of the pores and porosity for non-load-bearing bone graft substitute; however, improvement to the mixing of the phases of PLA and HA is required to achieve better integrity of the composite scaffolds. © 2008 IMechE.

In this study, ceria-yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) free-standing coatings, deposited by air plasma spraying (APS), were isothermally annealed at 1315 °C in order to explore the effect of sintering on the microstructure and the mechanical properties (i.e., hardness and Young's modulus). To this aim, coating microstructure, before and after heat treatment, was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis was carried out in order to estimate porosity fraction. Moreover, Vickers microindentation and depth-sensing nanoindentation tests were performed in order to study the evolution of hardness and Young's modulus as a function of annealing time. The results showed that thermal aging of CYSZ coatings leads to noticeable microstructural modifications. Indeed, the healing of finer pores, interlamellar, and intralamellar microcracks was observed. In particular, the porosity fraction decreased from ~10 to ~5% after 50 h at 1315 °C. However, the X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that high phase stability was achieved, as no phase decomposition occurred after thermal aging. In turn, both the hardness and Young's modulus increased, in particular, the increase in stiffness (with respect to "as produced" samples) was equal to ~25%, whereas the hardness increased to up to ~60%. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The ability to directly utilize hydrocarbons and other renewable liquid fuels is one of the most important issues affecting the large scale deployment of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein we designed La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ functional gradient anode (FGA) supported SOFCs, prepared with a co-tape casting method and sintered using the field assisted sintering technique (FAST). Through SEM observations, it was confirmed that the FGA structure was achieved and well maintained after the FAST process. Distortion and delamination which usually results after conventional sintering was successfully avoided. The La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs showed a maximum power density of 600mWcm-2 at 750°C, and was stable for 70h in CH4. No carbon deposition was detected using Raman spectroscopy. These results confirm the potential coke resistance of La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs.

A novel electrical current applied technique known as flash sintering has been applied to rapidly (within 10 min) densify electrolytes including Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 (GDC20), Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC10), and Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC20) for application in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). The densification temperature for the three electrolytes was 554°C, 635°C, and 667°C, respectively, which is far below conventional sintering temperatures. All specimens after flash sintering maintained the pure fluorite structure and exhibited a well-densified microstructure. To investigate the flash-sintering mechanism, we have applied Joule heating effect with blackbody radiation theory, and found that this theory could reasonably interpret the flash-sintering phenomenon by matching theoretically calculated temperature with the real temperature. More importantly, one of the materials inherent properties, the electronic conductivity, has been found correlated with the onset of flash sintering, which indicates that the electrons and holes are the primary current carriers during the start of flash-sintering process. As a result, potential densification mechanisms have been discussed in terms of spark plasma discharge.

Neste trabalho foram produzidos nanocompósitos de AlSiC misturando alumínio puro com nano partículas de SiC com diâmetro de 45 – 55 nm, usando, de forma sequencial, a técnica da metalurgia do pó e a compactação por “ Spark Plasma Sintering. O compósito obtido apresentava grãos com 100 nm de diâmetro, encontrandose as partículas de SiC localizadas, principalmente, nas fronteiras de grão. O nanocompósito sob a forma de provetes cilíndricos foi submetido a testes de compressão uniaxial e a testes de nanoindentação para analisar a influência das nanopartículas de SiC, da fração volúmica de ácido esteárico e do tempo de moagem, nas propriedades mecânicas do material. Para efeitos de comparação, utilizouse o comportamento mecânico do Al puro processado em condições similares e da liga de alumínio AA1050O. A tensão limite de elasticidade do nanocompósito com 1% Vol./Vol. de SiC é dez vezes superior à do AA1050. O refinamento de grão à escala nano constitui o principal mecanismo de aumento de resistência mecânica. Na realidade, o Al nanocristalino sem reforço de partículas de SiC, apresenta uma tensão limite de elasticidade sete vezes superior à da liga AA1050O. A adição de 0,5 % Vol./Vol. e de 1 % Vol./Vol. de SiC conduzem, respetivamente, ao aumento da tensão limite de elasticidade em 47 % e 50%. O aumento do tempo de moagem e a adição de ácido esteárico ao pó durante a moagem conduzem apenas a um pequeno aumento da tensão de escoamento. A dureza do material medida através de testes de nanoindentação confirmaram os dados anteriores. A estabilidade das microestruturas do alumínio puro e do nanocompósito AlSiC, foi testada através de recozimento de restauração realizado às temperaturas de 150 °C e 250 °C durante 2 horas. Aparentemente, o tratamento térmico não influenciou as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais, excepto do nanocompósito com 1 % Vol./Vol. de SiC restaurado à temperatura de 250 °C, para o qual se observou uma redução da tensão limite de elasticidade na ordem dos 13 %. No alumínio nanocristalino, a tensão de escoamento é controlada pelo efeito de HallPetch. As partículas de SiC, são segregadas pelas fronteiras do grão e não contribuem para o aumento de resistência mecânica segundo o mecanismo de Orowan. Alternativamente, as nanopartículas de SiC constituem um reforço das fronteiras do grão, impedindo o seu escorregamento e estabilizando a nanoestrutura. Deste modo, as propriedades mecânicas do alumínio nanocristalino e do nanocompósito de AlSiC poderão estar relacionadas com a facilidade ou dificuldade do escorregamento das fronteiras de grão, embora não seja apresentada prova explícita deste mecanismo à temperatura ambiente.

The cellular aluminum materials with relative densities of 0.1"-'0.25 were fabricated by the sintering method and effects of the density on mechanical properties of the cellular aluminum were investigated by compressive tests. The cellular aluminum exhibited a plateau region with a nearly constant flow stress. The stress in the plateau region increased with increasing relative density, on the other hand, the densification strain decreased with increasing relative density. Observation of the deformed cells revealed that the cell walls were bent. Besides, the stress in the plateau region was proportional to 1.9 power of the density. These suggest that plastic collapse is dominated by bending of the cell walls for the cellular aluminum produced by the sintering method.

Micro-porous nickel foams with an open cell structure were fabricated by the space-holding sintering. The average pore size of the micro-porous nickel specimens ranged from 30 μm to 150 μm, and the porosity ranged from 60 % to 80 %. The porous characteristics of the nickel specimens were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties were studied using compressive tests. For comparison, macro-porous nickel foams prepared by the chemical vapour deposition method with pore sizes of 800 μm and 1300 μm and porosity of 95 % were also presented. Results indicated that the ratio value of 6 and higher for the specimen length to cell size (L/d) is satisfying for obtaining stable compressive properties. The micro-porous nickel specimens exhibited different deformation behaviour and dramatically increased mechanical properties, compared to those of the macro-porous nickel specimens.

Titanium (Ti) and nickel (Ni) elemental powders were blened by ball milling and the ball milled powders were employed to fabricate NiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) foams by space sintering. Effect of ball milling time on phase constitutes of the sintered TiNi alloy foams was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.Scanning election microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the porous structure, and compressive tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the foams. Results indicate the porosities of the TiNi alloy foams can be controlled by using the spacer sincering method, and the porosities show a significant effect on the mechanical prperties and shape memory effect (SME).

Porous materials are now becoming attractive to researchers interested in both scientific and industrial applications due to their unique combinations of physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties in conjunction with excellent energy absorption characteristics. Metallic foams allow efficient conversion of impact energy into deformation work, which has led to increasing applications in energy absorption devices. In particular, foams made of aluminum and its alloys are of special interest because they can be used as lightweight panels, for energy absorption in crash situations and sound or heat absorbing functions in the automotive industry with the aim to reduce weight to improve crashworthiness, safety and comfort.
