We develop a systematic scheme to treat binary collisions between ultracold atoms in the presence of a strong laser field, tuned to the red of the trapping transition. We assume that the Rabi frequency is much less than the spacing between adjacent bound-state resonances, In this approach we neglect fine and hyperfine structures, but consider fully the three-dimensional aspects of the scattering process, up to the partial d wave. We apply the scheme to calculate the S matrix elements up to the second order in the ratio between the Rabi frequency and the laser detuning, We also obtain, fur this simplified multichannel model, the asymmetric line shapes of photoassociation spectroscopy, and the modification of the scattering length due to the light field at low, but finite, entrance kinetic energy. We emphasize that the present calculations can be generalized to treat more realistic models, and suggest how to carry out a thorough numerical comparison to this semianalytic theory. We calculate the contribution of relativistic dynamics on the neutron-deutron scattering length and triton binding energy employing five sets trinucleon potential models and four types of three-dimensional relativistic three-body equations suggested in the preceding paper. The relativistic correction to binding energy may vary a lot and even change sign depending on the relativistic formulation employed. The deviations of these observables from those obtained in nonrelativistic models follow the general universal trend of deviations introduced by off- and on-shell variations of two- and three-nucleon potentials in a nonrelativistic model calculation. Consequently, it will be difficult to separate unambiguously the effect of off- and on-shell variations of two- and three-nucleon potentials on low-energy three-nucleon observables from the effect of relativistic dynamics. We investigate a dilute mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in one dimension. With an attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length the ground state is a self-bound droplet, i.e., a Bose-Fermi bright soliton where the Bose and Fermi clouds are superimposed. We find that the quantum fluctuations stabilize the Bose-Fermi soliton such that the one-dimensional bright soliton exists for any finite attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length. We study density profile and collective excitations of the atomic bright soliton showing that they depend on the bosonic regime involved: mean-field or Tonks-Girardeau.

Complex mass poles, or ghost poles, are present in the Hartree-Fock solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the nucleon propagator in renormalizable models with Yukawa-type meson-nucleon couplings, as shown many years ago by Brown, Puff and Wilets (BPW), These ghosts violate basic theorems of quantum field theory and their origin is related to the ultraviolet behavior of the model interactions, Recently, Krein et.al, proved that the ghosts disappear when vertex corrections are included in a self-consistent way, softening the interaction sufficiently in the ultraviolet region. In previous studies of pi N scattering using ''dressed'' nucleon propagator and bare vertices, did by Nutt and Wilets in the 70's (NW), it was found that if these poles are explicitly included, the value of the isospin-even amplitude A((+)) is satisfied within 20% at threshold. The absence of a theoretical explanation for the ghosts and the lack of chiral symmetry in these previous studies led us to re-investigate the subject using the approach of the linear sigma-model and study the interplay of low-energy theorems for pi N scattering and ghost poles. For bare interaction vertices we find that ghosts are present in this model as well and that the A((+)) value is badly described, As a first approach to remove these complex poles, we dress the vertices with phenomenological form factors and a reasonable agreement with experiment is achieved, In order to fix the two cutoff parameters, we use the A((+)) value for the chiral limit (m(pi) --> 0) and the experimental value of the isoscalar scattering length, Finally, we test our model by calculating the phase shifts for the S waves and we find a good agreement at threshold. Employing a nonlocal model potential for electron exchange we study positronium-hydrogen-atom (Ps-H) scattering using a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) and Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) excitations. We find remarkable correlations among S-wave Ps-H binding energy, scattering length, effective range, and resonance energy in the electronic singlet state. Using these correlations we predict fairly accurate values of singlet Ps-H scattering length (3.50a0) and effective range (1.65a0).

The chaotic oscillation in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under an impulsive force was discussed using mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. It was found that sustained chaotic oscillation resulted in a BEC under the action of an impulsive force generated by suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or the harmonic oscillator trapping potential. The analysis suggested that the final state interatomic attraction played an important role in the generation of the chaotic dynamics.

Numerical simulations based on the time-dependent mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation was performed to explain the dynamics of collapsing and exploding Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of 85Rb atoms. The atomic interaction was manipulated by an external magnetic field via a Feshbach resonance. On changing the scattering length of atomic interaction from a positive to a large negative value, the condensate collapsed and ejected atoms via explosion.

Natural scales determine the physics of quantum few-body systems with short-range interactions. Thus, the scaling limit is found when the ratio between the scattering length and the interaction range tends to infinity, while the ratio between the physical scales are kept fixed. From the formal point of view, the relation of the scaling limit and the renormalization aspects of a few-body model with a zero-range interaction, through the derivation of subtracted three-body T-matrix equations that are renormalization-group invariant.

The scaling dependence of the recombination parameter as a function of the ratio between the energies of the atomic dimer and the most excited trimer states was derived. The scaling function tends to a unversal function in the limit of zero-range interaction or infinite scattering length. This paper reports on how one can obtain the trimer binding energy of a trapped atomic system, from the three-body recombination rate and the corresponding two-body scattering length.

The investigation of the dynamics of a discrete soliton in an array of Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of a periodically time-modulated atomic scattering length [Feshbach-resonance management (FRM)] was discussed. The slow and rapid modulations, in comparison with the tunneling frequency were considered. An averaged equation, which was a generalized discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, including higher-order effective nonlinearities and intersite nonlinear interactions was derived in the case of the rapid modulation. It was demonstrated that the modulations of sufficient strength results in splitting of the soliton by direct simulations.

We perform a systematic numerical study, based on the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, of jet formation in collapsing and exploding Bose-Einstein condensates as in the experiment by Donley et al (2001 Nature 412 295). In the actual experiment, via a Feshbach resonance, the scattering length of atomic interaction was suddenly changed from positive to negative on a pre-formed condensate. Consequently, the condensate collapsed and ejected atoms via explosion. On disruption of the collapse by suddenly changing the scattering length to zero, a radial jet of atoms was formed in the experiment. We present a satisfactory account of jet formation under the experimental conditions and also make predictions beyond experimental conditions which can be verified in future experiments.

The three-body recombination coefficient of an ultracold atomic system, together with the corresponding two-body scattering length a, allow us to predict the energy E 3 of the shallow trimer bound state, using a universal scaling function. The production of dimers in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, from three-body recombination processes, in the regime of short magnetic pulses near a Feshbach resonance, is also studied in line with the experimental observation.

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study different aspects of the localization of a noninteracting ideal Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasiperiodic optical-lattice potential. Such a quasiperiodic potential, used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC, can be formed by the superposition of two standing-wave polarized laser beams with different wavelengths. We investigate the effect of the variation of optical amplitudes and wavelengths on the localization of a noninteracting BEC. We also simulate the nonlinear dynamics when a harmonically trapped BEC is suddenly released into a quasiperiodic potential, as done experimentally in a laser speckle potential. We finally study the destruction of the localization in an interacting BEC due to the repulsion generated by a positive scattering length between the bosonic atoms. © 2009 The American Physical Society.
