We explore the influence of sex role attribution and associated gendered ascriptions upon the entrepreneurial experiences of a female high-technology business owner operating within the context of business incubation. Our literature analysis and empirical evidence suggest that stereotypical gendered expectations surrounding incubated high-technology venturing reproduce masculine norms of entrepreneurial behavior. The adoption of a gendered perspective to explore the experience of business incubation responds to contemporary calls to embed feminist analyses within the entrepreneurial field of enquiry. Furthermore, we draw upon evidence from a detailed case study informed by a life history narrative to explore a female entrepreneur's experience of incubated high-technology entrepreneurship. © 2011 Baylor University.

Ultrastructural changes to the tegument of 5-week-old, 3-week-old and freshly-excysted Fasciola hepatica following in vitro incubation with the deacetylated (amine) metabolite of diamphenethide (DAMD, 10 mu gml(-1)) were examined by transmission electron microscopy, A similar sequence of tegumental changes occurred in all three age groups of fluke, although, with increasing fluke age, the time before onset increased and the damage became more extensive. The 5-week-old flukes showed an initial stress response after 3 h, typified by blebbing of the apical plasma membrane, formation of microvilli and an accumulation and accelerated release of secretory bodies at the tegumental apex, as well as swelling of the basal infolds, The swelling increased in extent with progressively longer periods of incubation in DAMD, leading to extreme edema and sloughing of the tegument after 9 h. The 3-week-old flukes showed a stress response and swelling of the basal infolds after only 1.5 h, although sloughing of the tegument did not occur until after 9 h. In the freshly-excysted metacercaria, a stress response and some sloughing of the tegument were evident after only 0.5 h. At all stages of development, the ventral tegument was more severely affected than the dorsal, Changes also occurred to the tegumental cells which were indicative of a disruption in the synthesis and release of tegumental secretory bodies: the amount of GER became reduced, the cisternae became swollen and their ribosomal covering decreased, the Golgi complexes disappeared from the cells and the numbers of secretory bodies in the cells also decreased, The heterochromatin content of the nuclei increased and eventually the tegumental cells began to break down, Again, the changes became apparent more rapidly at the earlier stages of development. The ultrastructural changes to the tegument are linked to a possible mode of action for diamphenethide as an inhibitor of protein synthesis. In turn, the results may help to explain the drug's high efficacy against juvenile stages of F. hepatica.

SUMMARY A study was carried out to investigate whether the action of triclabendazole sulphoxide (TCBZ.SO) against the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica is altered by inhibition of P-glycoprotein (Pgp)-linked drug efflux pumps. The Oberon TCBZ-resistant and Cullompton TCBZ-susceptible fluke isolates were used for this in vitro study and the Pgp inhibitor selected was R(+)-verapamil [R(+)-VPL]. For experiments with the Oberon isolate, flukes were incubated for 24 h with either R(+)-VPL (1×10-4 m) on its own, TCBZ.SO (15 µg mL-1) alone, a combination of R(+)-VPL (1×10-4 m) plus TCBZ.SO (15 µg mL-1), TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) on its own, or a combination of TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) plus R(+)-VPL (1×10-4 m). They were also incubated in TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone or in combination with R(+)-VPL (1×10-4 m) until they became inactive; and in TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone for a time to match that of the combination inactivity time. Flukes from the Cullompton isolate were treated with either TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone or in combination with R(+)-VPL (1×10-4 m) until they became inactive, or with TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone time-matched to the combination inactivity time. Morphological changes resulting from drug treatment and following Pgp inhibition were assessed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Incubation in R(+)-VPL alone had a minimal effect on either isolate. TCBZ.SO treatment had a relatively greater impact on the TCBZ-susceptible Cullompton isolate. When R(+)-VPL was combined with TCBZ.SO in the incubation medium, however, the surface disruption to both isolates was more severe than that seen after TCBZ.SO treatment alone; also, the time taken to reach inactivity was shorter. More significantly, though, the potentiation of drug activity was greater in the Oberon isolate; also, it was more distinct at the higher concentration of TCBZ.SO. So, the Oberon isolate appears to be particularly sensitive to efflux pump inhibition. The results of this study suggest that enhanced drug efflux in the Oberon isolate may be involved in the mechanism of resistance to TCBZ.

While there is a substantial body of literature exploring the influence of business incubation upon early stage firms, this debate remains almost entirely gender blind. This article challenges this assumption by adopting a feminist perspective to reveal business incubation as a gendered process shaping the identity work undertaken by women seeking legitimacy as technology venturers. In so doing, we critically evaluate prevailing normative analyses of the business incubation process and entrepreneurial legitimation. To illustrate this argument, we draw upon empirical evidence which reveals technology incubation as a legitimating induction process encouraging women to reproduce masculinized representations of the normative technology entrepreneur.

A study has been carried out to investigate whether the action of triclabendazole (TCBZ) against Fasciola hepatica is altered by inhibition of P-glycoprotein (Pgp)-linked drug efflux pumps. The Sligo TCBZ-resistant fluke isolate was used for these experiments and the Pgp inhibitor selected was R(+)-verapamil [R(+)-VPL]. In the first experiment, flukes were initially incubated for 2 h in R(+)-VPL (100 μ m), then incubated in R(+)-VPL+triclabendazole sulphoxide (TCBZ.SO) (50 μg mL-1, or 133·1 μ m) until flukes ceased movement (at 9 h post-treatment). In a second experiment, flukes were incubated in TCBZ.SO alone and removed from the incubation medium following cessation of motility (after 15 h). In the third experiment, flukes were incubated for 24 h in R(+)-VPL on its own. Changes to the testis tubules and vitelline follicles following drug treatment and following Pgp inhibition were assessed by means of light microscope histology and transmission electron microscopy. Incubation of the Sligo isolate in either R(+)-VPL or TCBZ.SO on their own had a limited impact on the morphology of the two tissues. Greater disruption was observed when the drugs were combined, in terms of the block in development of the spermatogenic and vitelline cells and the apoptotic breakdown of the remaining cells. Sperm formation was severely affected and abnormal. Large spaces appeared in the vitelline follicles and synthesis of shell protein was disrupted. The results of this study support the concept of altered drug efflux in TCBZ-resistant flukes and indicate that drug transporters may play a role in the development of drug resistance.

From a macro perspective, it is widely acknowledged that University incubation models within a region are important stimulants of economic development through innovation and job creation. With the emergence of quadruple helix innovation ecosystems, universities have had re-evaluate their University incubation activity and models to engage more fully with industry and end users. However, within a given region, the type of University may influence their ability to engage with quadruple helix stakeholders and consequently impact their incubation activity. To date there is a scarcity of research which explores this 'meso' environment and its subsequent impact on University incubation models. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to use a stakeholder lens to explore University Incubation models within unique regional and organisational characteristics and constraints. The research methodology employed was based on a comparative case analysis of incubation of two different Universities within a UK peripheral region. It was found that variances existed in relation to the two universities incubation models which were found to result from both regional (macro environment) and organisational (meso environment) influences (i.e. university type). This research contributes to both regional and national agendas by empirically illustrating the need for appropriate design and tailoring of university incubation models (via acknowledgement of quadruple helix stakeholder influence) to incorporate contextual influences rather than adopting a best practise approach.

Waved albatrosses often relocate their eggs during incubation by placing the egg between the tarsi and shuffling forward. This behavior frequently results in eggs becoming lodged between rocks, accounting for at least 10%, and perhaps as much as 80%, of breeding failures. Because albatross populations worldwide are currently threatened, artificial means of augmenting reproductive success may be necessary to mitigate losses caused by anthropogenic effects. We characterize the frequency and extent of egg movement; test several hypotheses related to microhabitat, timing, and incubation location to explain the behavior; and investigate the utility of repositioning lodged eggs in a location in which breeding birds might resume incubation. Egg rescue increased both the likelihood of continued incubation as well as the hatching rate in our experiment, and provides an efficient, low-cost management option for this species.
