A década de 1980 trouxe uma visão alternativa à corrente positivista predominante no campo de pesquisa do consumidor: a Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), que assume uma orientação epistemológica baseada no interpretativismo e na pesquisa qualitativa. Diante do destaque alcançado pela CCT, levantou-se a seguinte questão: a CCT já pode ser considerada uma escola de pensamento em marketing autônoma? Pautados em três critérios fundamentais para a qualificação de uma escola de pensamento (reconhecimento acadêmico, corpo de conhecimento e contribuições), foi realizada uma desk research, baseada em periódicos e artigos da área e na construção de um corpus de pesquisa construído com base nas referências contidas no texto seminal Consumer Culture Theory (CCT): twenty years of research. A conclusão é de que a CCT atende aos critérios adotados na presente pesquisa, podendo ser considerada uma escola de pensamento a utônoma dentro do campo de pesquisa do consumo.

The theoretical framework that underpins this research study is based on the Prospect Theory formulated by Kahneman and Tversky, and Thaler's Mental Accounting Theory. The research aims to evaluate the consumers' behavior when different patterns of discount are offered (in percentage and absolute value and for larger and smaller discounts). Two experiments were conducted to explore these patterns of behavior and the results that were obtained supported the view that the framing effect was a common occurrence. The patterns of choice of individuals in a sample were found to be different due to changes in the ways discounts were offered. This can be explained by the various ways of presenting discount rates that had an impact on the influence of purchase intentions, recommendations and quality perception.

ABSTRACT In this study, we demonstrate that the art infusion effect, in which the presence of visual art causes a positive impact on consumers' perceptions of products and advertising messages, might have a moderation effect on regulatory fit and non-fit messages. We investigate the impact of visual art on advertisement evaluations in regulatory (non-) fit conditions. Regulatory focus theory suggests that consumers rely on their motivational focus (prevention vs. promotion) for their evaluations and decisions. Usually, consumers prefer products that fit with their personal motivational focus. In the present study, the results of three experiments indicate that using visual art with a promotion or prevention fit message is recommended, while non-art images increase message persuasiveness when non-fit messages are presented. Therefore, not all information compatible with the consumer's motivational focus are best evaluated. When non-art images are presented, non-fit messages might be more persuasive.

The adoption of faster modes of transportation (mainly the private car) has changed profoundly the spatial organisation of cities. The increase in distance covered due to increased speed of travel and to urban sprawl leads to an increase in energy consumption, being the transportation sector a huge consumer responsible for 61.5% of total world oil consumption and a global final energy consumption of 31.6% in EU-27 (2007). Due to unsustainable transportation conditions, many cities suffer from congestion and various other traffic problems. Such situations get worse with solutions mostly seen in the development of new infrastructure for motorized modes of transportation, and construction of car parking structures. The bicycle, considered the most efficient among all modes of transportation including walking, is a travel mode that can be adopted in most cities contributing for urban sustainability given the associated environmental, economic and social advantages. In many nations a large number of policy initiatives have focused on discouraging the use of private cars, encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transportation, like public transportation and other forms such as bicycling. Given the importance of developing initiatives that favour the use of bicycle as an urban transportation mode, an analysis of city suitability, including distances and slopes of street network, is crucial in order to help decision-makers to plan the city for bicycle. In this research Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology was used for this purpose and some results are presented concerning the city of Coimbra.

Cada vez mais começa a notar-se, na indústria vitivinícola, uma grande preocupação com a qualidade dos seus produtos, motivada pela maior sensibilização e exigência dos consumidores. Deste modo, a presença de defeitos organoléticos no vinho representa uma fonte de perda financeira nesta indústria, pelo que o seu controlo se torna indispensável para que se obtenha um produto de elevada qualidade. Neste sentido, torna-se interessante desenvolver um método de análise que seja rápido de forma a permitir a quantificação simultânea das moléculas identificadas como principais responsáveis pelos distúrbios olfativos dos vinhos. Assim, este trabalho surge com o objetivo de implementar e validar um método para a determinação de contaminantes em vinho por microextração em fase sólida (SPME) e cromatografia gasosa acoplada à espetrometria de massa tandem (GC-MS/MS) e a sua correlação com a análise sensorial. A técnica de microextração em fase sólida é simples e rápida na medida em que não requer um pré-tratamento da amostra. Por sua vez, a análise por GC-MS permite identificar de forma clara os compostos em estudo, nomeadamente, 4-Etilfenol (4-EP), 4-Etilguaiacol (4-EG), 2,4,6-Tricloroanisol (TCA), 2,3,4,6-Tetracloroanisol (TeCA) e 2,4,6-Tribromoanisol (TBA). Foram realizados estudos de otimização das condições de extração, comparando as fibras 100 μm PDMS e 50/30 μm DVB/CAR/PDMS. Obtiveram-se resultados mais satisfatórios, em termos de resposta e da relação sinal/ruído, com a fibra 50/30 μm DVB/CAR/PDMS e estabeleceram-se como condições de extração 55ºC para a temperatura de incubação/extração, uma velocidade de agitação de 250 rpm e 60 minutos de tempo de extração. Ao longo deste trabalho, analisaram-se 50 amostras de vinho, das quais 48 eram amostras de Vinho Tinto do Douro e 2 de Vinho do Porto. Para validar a metodologia foram realizados estudos de linearidade, limiares analíticos, repetibilidade, precisão intermédia e recuperação. De um modo geral, obtiveram-se bons resultados ao nível da linearidade para as gamas de concentração escolhidas. Quanto aos limites de deteção e de quantificação, o 4-EP é o contaminante que apresenta uma gama de concentrações mais alta, notando-se limiares analíticos mais elevados, com valores próximos dos últimos níveis de concentração, oscilando entre 65 e 583 μg/L. No caso dos Anisóis, o TBA apresenta limites de deteção mais baixos, entre 0,4 e 17,0 ng/L. Os limiares analíticos foram validados com recurso a estudos de precisão intermédia e repetibilidade, cujos resultados se encontram dentro das especificações descritas no documento SANCO/10684/2009 (%RSD ≤ 30% para os Anisóis e %RSD ≤ 20% para os Fenóis Voláteis). Foram, ainda, realizados estudos de exatidão recorrendo a ensaios de recuperação e a ensaios interlaboratoriais. Muitas vezes conseguem-se boas recuperações, no entanto notam-se maiores dificuldades para o TBA e para o TeCA. Relativamente aos ensaios interlaboratoriais, verificam-se maiores discrepâncias para o 4-EP. Já os restantes contaminantes apresentam resultados, geralmente, satisfatórios (|z-score| ≤ 2).

OBJECTIVE To analyze the regional governance of the health systemin relation to management strategies and disputes.METHODOLOGICAL PROCEDURES A qualitative study with health managers from 19 municipalities in the health region of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Data were drawn from 17 semi-structured interviews of state, regional, and municipal health policymakers and managers; a focus group; observations of the regional interagency committee; and documents in 2012. The political-institutional and the organizational components were analyzed in the light of dialectical hermeneutics.RESULTS The regional interagency committee is the chief regional governance strategy/component and functions as a strategic tool for strengthening governance. It brings together a diversity of members responsible for decision making in the healthcare territories, who need to negotiate the allocation of funding and the distribution of facilities for common use in the region. The high turnover of health secretaries, their lack of autonomy from the local executive decisions, inadequate technical training to exercise their function, and the influence of party politics on decision making stand as obstacles to the regional interagency committee’s permeability to social demands. Funding is insufficient to enable the fulfillment of the officially integrated agreed-upon program or to boost public supply by the system, requiring that public managers procure services from the private market at values higher than the national health service price schedule (Brazilian Unified Health System Table). The study determined that “facilitators” under contract to health departments accelerated access to specialized (diagnostic, therapeutic and/or surgical) services in other municipalities by direct payment to physicians for procedure costs already covered by the Brazilian Unified Health System.CONCLUSIONS The characteristics identified a regionalized system with a conflictive pattern of governance and intermediate institutionalism. The regional interagency committee’s managerial routine needs to incorporate more democratic devices for connecting with educational institutions, devices that are more permeable to social demands relating to regional policy making.

“Cork taint” is a major problem in wine industry and is caused by contamination of wines. This contamination is usually attributed to wine cork stoppers and 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (2,4,6-TCA) is one of the compounds mostly associated to this off-flavour. In this work, a consumer panel performed “forced choice” triangular tests in order to measure Odour Detection Thresholds (ODT) and Taste Detection Thresholds (TDT) of 2,4,6-TCA in water, hydro-alcoholic solutions (11.5% and 18% ethanol) and white and red wines. A paired preference test was also performed by the panel in order to measure Odour Rejection Threshold (ORT) in white and red wine spiked with 2,4,6-TCA. Results obtained show that the ODT and the TDT for 2,4,6-TCA in water were 0.2 and 0.3 ng/L, respectively. In hydro-alcoholic solutions with 11.5% and 18% ethanol the ODT were 4 and 10 ng/L respectively. In red wine the ODT and the TDT were 0.9 and 1.7 ng/L and in white wine were 1.5 and 1.0 ng/L respectively. ORT for white was 10.4 ng/L and for red wines 16.0 ng/L. These results suggest that although this group of consumers detected very low concentrations of 2,4,6-TCA in wines, they did not reject the wine at these low concentration values.

The debate surrounding the financial needs of investors and the impact on society of investment is considered to be an important research topic due to the growth of socially responsible financial markets. The objective of this research is to study the perception of the Spanish public about socially responsible investing (SRI) criteria and real-life investment needs. To examine the Spanish perception of SRI, we conducted a field survey. The results show that SRI is in an early stage and Spanish investors need more exact information regarding social, environmental, and governance criteria in order to invest in socially responsible companies and products.

This paper develops an energy management system with integration of smart meters for electricity consumers in a smart grid context. The integration of two types of smart meters (SM) are developed: (i) consumer owned SM and (ii) distributor owned SM. The consumer owned SM runs over a wireless platform - ZigBee protocol and the distributor owned SM uses the wired environment - ModBus protocol. The SM are connected to a SCADA system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) that supervises a network of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). The SCADA system/PLC network integrates different types of information coming from several technologies present in modern buildings. The developed control strategy implements a hierarchical cascade controller where inner loops are performed by local PLCs, and the outer loop is managed by a centralized SCADA system, which interacts with the entire local PLC network. In order to implement advanced controllers, a communication channel was developed to allow the communication between the SCADA system and the MATLAB software. (C) 2014 The Authors. A liberalização dos mercados de energia e a utilização intensiva de produção distribuída tem vindo a provocar uma alteração no paradigma de operação das redes de distribuição de energia elétrica. A continuidade da fiabilidade das redes de distribuição no contexto destes novos paradigmas requer alterações estruturais e funcionais. O conceito de Smart Grid vem permitir a adaptação das redes de distribuição ao novo contexto. Numa Smart Grid os pequenos e médios consumidores são chamados ao plano ativo das participações. Este processo é conseguido através da aplicação de programas de demand response e da existência de players agregadores. O uso de programas de demand response para alcançar benefícios para a rede encontra-se atualmente a ser estudado no meio científico. Porém, existe a necessidade de estudos que procurem benefícios para os pequenos e médios consumidores. O alcance dos benefícios para os pequenos e médios consumidores não é apenas vantajoso para o consumidor, como também o é para a rede elétrica de distribuição. A participação, dos pequenos e médios consumidores, em programas de demand response acontece significativamente através da redução de consumos energéticos. De modo a evitar os impactos negativos que podem provir dessas reduções, o trabalho aqui proposto faz uso de otimizações que recorrem a técnicas de aprendizagem através da utilização redes neuronais artificiais. Para poder efetuar um melhor enquadramento do trabalho com as Smart Grids, será desenvolvido um sistema multiagente capaz de simular os principais players de uma Smart Grid. O foco deste sistema multiagente será o agente responsável pela simulação do pequeno e médio consumidor. Este agente terá não só que replicar um pequeno e médio consumidor, como terá ainda que possibilitar a integração de cargas reais e virtuais. Como meio de interação com o pequeno e médio consumidor, foi desenvolvida no âmbito desta dissertação um sistema móvel. No final do trabalho obteve-se um sistema multiagente capaz de simular uma Smart Grid e a execução de programas de demand response, sSendo o agente representante do pequeno e médio consumidor capaz de tomar ações e reações de modo a poder responder autonomamente aos programas de demand response lançados na rede. O desenvolvimento do sistema permite: o estudo e análise da integração dos pequenos e médios consumidores nas Smart Grids por meio de programas de demand response; a comparação entre múltiplos algoritmos de otimização; e a integração de métodos de aprendizagem. De modo a demonstrar e viabilizar as capacidades de todo o sistema, a dissertação inclui casos de estudo para as várias vertentes que podem ser exploradas com o sistema desenvolvido.

Recent and future changes in power systems, mainly in the smart grid operation context, are related to a high complexity of power networks operation. This leads to more complex communications and to higher network elements monitoring and control levels, both from network’s and consumers’ standpoint. The present work focuses on a real scenario of the LASIE laboratory, located at the Polytechnic of Porto. Laboratory systems are managed by the SCADA House Intelligent Management (SHIM), already developed by the authors based on a SCADA system. The SHIM capacities have been recently improved by including real-time simulation from Opal RT. This makes possible the integration of Matlab®/Simulink® real-time simulation models. The main goal of the present paper is to compare the advantages of the resulting improved system, while managing the energy consumption of a domestic consumer.

With increasing technological innovation, the concept of marketing and its applications become more functional and wide. Today, we witness a steady growth in the development of mobile marketing campaigns, i.e., marketing campaigns targeting mobile devices (mobile phones, Smartphones, PDAs, tablets). Among the several mobile technologies available (Bluetooth networks, Wi-Fi, WAP, SMS service, MMS), Bluetooth seems to have the biggest potential for the least invasive consumer mobile marketing strategy. This study seeks to answer the question "what factors may motivate the Portuguese consumer to accept Bluetooth marketing?.“ We propose a conceptual model capable of investigating the relationships between the several responsiveness factors to Bluetooth marketing. The development of a set of hypotheses supported by an online questionnaire to a valid sample of 755 participants, demonstrates that there is a relationship between factors such as expanded knowledge of the technology, and Bluetooth marketing receptivity. Additionally, we find that the information value of mobile advertising messages, such as entertainment value and personalization, relates well to responsiveness. The ability to accept/dismiss promotional messages sent to mobile phones and other safety features also correlated well with Bluetooth marketing receptivity.
