The response of generalist egg parasitoids to alternative natural hosts that are present simultaneously is not well known. We investigated the behavior of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) in relation to two field hosts Helicoverpa armigera Hubner and Spodoptera litura Fabricius, in choice and no choice tests. We quantified the effects of natal host species and post-emergence adult age on the oviposition preference of the parasitoids. H. armigera eggs were consistently preferred over S. litura eggs, regardless of the natal host and adult age. When only S. litura eggs were available as hosts, they were parasitized at statistically similar rates to H. armigera eggs (average of 17 +/- 2.7 vs. 13 +/- 3.0, H. armigera to S. litura). The adult lifespan and lifetime fecundity of T. pretiosum were variable but were affected by natal host species and/or host species to which they were exposed. Mean lifespan and fecundity of parasitoids that had developed in H. armigera eggs and were exposed to H. armigera eggs for oviposition were 13.9 +/- 1.8 days and 98.7 +/- 11.0 adult offspring. By contrast, those that developed in S. litura eggs and were exposed to S. litura eggs for oviposition lived for 7 +/- 0.9 days and produced 53.8 +/- 8.0 adult offspring. The ovigeny index (OI) was significantly lower in the parasitoids exposed to H. armigera eggs than in those exposed to S. litura eggs, regardless of the natal host, indicating that H. armigera eggs sustain the adult parasitoids better than S. litura eggs. The aim of this study was to determine biofloc contributions to the antioxidant status and lipid nutrition of broodstock of Litopenaeus stylirostris in relationship with their reproductive performance and the health of larvae produced. Shrimp broodstock reared with Biofloc technology (BFT) compared to Clear water (CW) exhibited a higher health status with (i) a better final survival rate during the reproduction period (52.6% in CW against 79.8% in BFT); (ii) higher glutathione level (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS), reduced oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio and a higher spawning rate and frequency as well as higher gonado-somatic index and number of spawned eggs. Finally, larvae from broodstock from BFT exhibited higher survival rates at the Zoe 2 (+ 37%) and Post Larvae 1 (+ 51%) stages when compared with those from females from CW treatment. The improved reproductive performance of the broodstock and higher larvae survival rate resulting from BFT treatment may be linked to the dietary supplement obtained by the shrimp from natural productivity during BFT rearing. Indeed, our study confirms that biofloc particulates represent a potential source of dietary glutathione and a significant source of lipids, particularly essential phospholipids and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) for shrimps. Thus, broodstock from BFT treatment accumulated phospholipids, n-3 HUFA and arachidonic acid, which are necessary for vitellogenesis, embryogenesis and pre-feeding larval development. The predominant essential fatty acids, arachidonic acid (ARA), eicopentaeonic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), had levels in the eggs that were, respectively, 2.5, 2.8 and 3 fold higher for BFT compared to the CW treatment. Statement of Relevance Today, the influence of biofloc technology on shrimp broodstock is not enough described and no information was available on the larvae quality. Moreover, two key pieces of new information emerge from the present study. Firstly, biofloc is a source of further dietary lipids that can act as energetic substrates, but also as a source of phospholipids and essential fatty acids necessary to sustain reproduction, embryonic and larval development. Second, improving the reproduction of the broodstock also leads to an improvement in the quality of the larvae. We think that our research is new and important to increase knowledge on biofloc topic. We believe the paper will contribute to the development of more efficient and therefore more sustainable systems.

Seventy-one mature Brangus cows, 38 nonlactating (NL) and 33 in late stage of lactation (L) were fed for 192 days (Phase I) a low energy diet (L). During Phase II (65 days) 19 NL and 17 L cows were fed a high energy diet (H). The other nonlactating (19) and lactating (16) cows remained on the low energy diet. Energy restriction during Phase I did not affect (P> 0.05) cyclic ovarian activity although losses in body weight and condition were substantial. Rapid changes in body weight, condition, and percent empty body lipe (EBLP) during Phase II did not substantially influencefertility, although a five-fold difference in EBLP was observed (NL0H vs. L-L). Treatment groups did not differ (P> 0.05) in conception rate, days from the beginning of the breeding season to breeding and to conception, conception at first service, and number of services per conception. Values observed for these parameters for NL-H, L-H, NL-L, and L-L groups were respectively: 68,4%, `3,.2, 23.3, 36.8% and 1.68; 82,4% 12.7, 19.5, 58.8% and 1.29; 68.4%, 10.2, 17.4, 47.4%, and 1.41; 68.8%, 12.4, 19.5, 43.7%, and 1.50.

Ongoing problems exist with the commercial scale domestication of Penaeus monodon. One of the major issues, in terms of reproductive performance, is the low egg hatch rate of eggs from these captive bred prawns. The current study investigated the related issue of mating success. Time lapse video observations were conducted to compare the mating behaviour of pond-reared (domesticated) and wild-caught prawn P. monodon broodstock. Mating success of the pond-reared prawns was found to be low relative to wild-caught. It was determined that both male and female prawns contributed to this low mating rate suggesting both genders were impacted negatively by the domestication process. The causative factors for the low mating success are yet to be determined, however external physical abnormalities and lack of sexual maturity did not appear to play a role. The most notable behavioural difference between wild-caught and domesticated prawns was a reduced level of pursuit behaviour by domesticated males. This and other behavioural differences are discussed in relation to an increasing body of evidence that male prawns respond to sex pheromones produced by receptive females and that males detect these chemical signals in part, via their second antennal flagella. Accordingly we hypothesise that pond-reared (domesticated) females may have a reduced ability to produce or release sex pheromones and males, a reduced ability to detect them when compared to their wild-caught counterparts.
