An equivalent unit cell waveguide approach (WGA) to designing 4 multilayer microstrip reflectarray of variable size patches is presented. In this approach, a normal incidence of a plane wave on an infinite periodic array of radiating elements is considered to obtain reflection coefficient phase curves for the reflectarray's elements. It is shown that this problem is equivalent to the problem of reflection of the dominant TEM mode in a waveguide with patches interleaved by layers of dielectric. This waveguide problem is solved using a field matching technique and a method of moments (MoM). Based on this solution, a fast computer algorithm is developed to generate reflection coefficient phase curves for a multilayer microstrip patch reflectarray. The validity of the developed algorithm is tested against alternative approaches and Agilent High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). Having confirmed the validity of the WGA approach, a small offset feed two-layer microstrip patch array is designed and developed. This reflectarray is tested experimentally and shows good performance.

A new method for enhancing the 2.1 VSWR impedance bandwidth of microstrip antennas is presented. Bandwidth enhancement is achieved by loading the microstrip antenna by a ceramic microwave dielectric resonator (DR). The validity of this technique has been established using rectangular and circular radiating geometries. This method improves the bandwidth of a rectangular microstrip antenna to more than 10% (= 5 times that of a conventional rectangular microstrip antenna) with an enhanced gain of I dB

A broadband rectangular tnicrostrip antenna utilizing an electromagnetically coupled L-strip feed is presented. Experimental study shows a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of a 10% and excellent cross-polarization performance with a radiation coverage almost as same as that of the rectangular microstrip antenna fed by conventional methods. The variation of bandwidth for different feed parameters is also studied. The proposed antenna is suitable for broadband communications

Design of a dual-port circular patch antenna with a sector-slot for dual-frequency operation is presented. The antenna resonates at two distinct frequencies with orthogonal polarizations and broad radiation characteristics. Unlike the conventional circular patch, this antenna can be microstrip-fed to operate at either of the resonances. The two polarizations can be simultaneously excited using two electromagnetically coupled ports with an isolation better than −30 dB between the ports. This antenna has the added advantage of size reduction of 44% compared to the conventional circular patch without any reduction in gain.

UMTS (1920-2170 MHz), IEEE 802.11 b/g (2400- 2484) and WLAN IEEE 802.11a band (5.15-5.35) is reported in this paper. The overall dimension of the antenna is 33 x 33 mm2 including the top patch with a dimension 22 x 22 mm2. The experimental results of the antenna are presented in this paper. The results confirm that the antenna exhibits wide band characteristics and covers 7 bands of operation

In general, the materials used as substrates in the project of microstrip antennas are: isotropic, anisotropic dielectrics and ferrimagnetic materials (magnetic anisotropy). The use of ferrimagnetic materials as substrates in microstrip patch antennas has been concentrated on the analysis of antennas with circular and rectangular patches. However, a new class of materials, called metamaterials, has been currently the focus of a great deal of interest. These materials exhibit bianisotropic characteristics, with permittivity and permeability tensors. The main objective of this work is to develop a theoretical and numerical analysis for the radiation characteristics of annular ring microstrip antennas, using ferrites and metamaterials as substrates. The full wave analysis is performed in the Hankel transform domain through the application of the Hertz vector potentials. Considering the definition of the Hertz potentials and imposing the boundary conditions, the dyadic Green s function components are obtained relating the surface current density components at the plane of the patch to the electric field tangential components. Then, Galerkin s method is used to obtain a system of matrix equations, whose solution gives the antenna resonant frequency. From this modeling, it is possible to obtain numerical results for the resonant frequency, radiation pattern, return loss, and antenna bandwidth as a function of the annular ring physical parameters, for different configurations and substrates. The theoretical analysis was developed for annular ring microstrip antennas on a double ferrimagnetic/isotropic dielectric substrate or metamaterial/isotropic dielectric substrate. Also, the analysis for annular ring microstrip antennas on a single ferrimagnetic or metamaterial layer and for suspended antennas can be performed as particular cases

This work has as main objective the study of arrays of microstrip antennas with superconductor rectangular patch. The phases and the radiation patterns are analyzed. A study of the main theories is presented that explain the microscopic and macroscopic phenomena of superconductivity. The BCS, London equations and the Two Fluid Model, are theories used in the applications of superconductors, at the microstrip antennas and antennas arrays. Phase Arrangements will be analyzed in linear and planar configurations. The arrangement factors of these configurations are obtained, and the phase criteria and the spacing between the elements, are examined in order to minimize losses in the superconductor, compared with normal conductors. The new rectangular patch antenna, consist of a superconducting material, with the critical temperature of 233 K, whose formula is Tl5Ba4Ca2Cu9Oy, is analyzed by the method of the Transverse nTransmission Line (TTL), developed by H. C. C. Fernandes, applied in the Fourier Transform Domain (FTD). The TTL is a full-wave method, which has committed to obtaining the electromagnetic fields in terms of the transverse components of the structure. The inclusion of superconducting patch is made using the complex resistive boundary condition, using the impedance of the superconductor in the Dyadic Green function, in the structure. Results are obtained from the resonance frequency depending on the parameters of the antenna using superconducting material, radiation patterns in E-Plane and H -Plane, the phased antennas array in linear and planar configurations, for different values of phase angles and different spacing between the elements

This letter describes a new idea of increasing operational bandwidth of a compact planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) by introducing open-end slots in the ground plane under the radiating patch. The slots are not in the way of active modules of a wireless transceiver and thus the proposed antenna size reduction method is attractive from the point of view of practical implementation.

An equivalent unit cell waveguide approach (WGA) is described to obtain reflection coefficient phase curves for designing a microstrip patch reflectarray supported by a ground plane with periodic apertures or slots. Based on the presented theory, a computer algorithm for determining the reflection coefficient of a plane wave normally incident on a multi-layer structure of patches and apertures is developed. The validity of the developed algorithm is verified by comparing the obtained results with those published in the literature and the ones generated by Agilent High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). A good agreement in all the presented examples is obtained, proving that the developed theory and computer algorithm can be an effective tool for designing multi-layer microstrip reflectarrays with a periodically perforated ground plane. A novel compact single-layer dual frequency microstrip antenna which uses an H-shaped geometry with two U-shaped slots embedded near the radiation edges, is presented. By changing the design parameters, the lower and higher resonant frequencies can be controlled easily, and a range of frequency ratios (1.716-2.363) can be obtained in this design. For the two operating frequencies of the proposed antenna, the same polarization planes and broadside radiation patterns are achieved. Compared to the regular dualfrequency patch antenna, this antenna can realize a significant size reduction

The thesis is the outcome of the experimental and theoretical Investigations on novel feeding techniques for bandwidth enhancement of microstrip patches. The new feeding techniques provide bandwidth enhancement without deteriorating the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The antenna is analysed using finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. The predicated results are compared with the experimental results and excellent agreement is observed. The results are also verified using IE3D simulation software. The antenna is suitable for personal and broadband communications.
