Zirconia-polymethylmetacrylate hybrids prepared by a sol-gel method were deposited by dip-coating on stainless steel to improve the resistance against wet corrosion. The effect of the concentration of polymethylmetacrylate and the number of coating applications on the microstructure and corrosion performance of coated samples was investigated. The microstructural properties of samples was analyzed by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, adhesion tests and profilemeter measurements. The electrochemical corrosion was evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization curves at room temperature. Results show that the sample prepared with 17 vol.% of polymethylmethacrylate has a maximum corrosion resistance, smaller roughness, are hermetic and adherent to the substrate. This film increases the life time of the stainless steel by a factor 30. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Metallographic studies carried out for Tytin-Plus and Dispersalloy amalgams show a porous multiphase material, whose surface phases are: gamma-(Ag3Sn), gamma(1)-(Ag2Hg3), eta'-(Cu6Sn5) and epsilon-(Cu3Sn). Additionally, Dispersalloy is present in the Ag-Cu eutectic. The application of surface analysis by SEM reveal a heterogeneous distribution of the above mentioned phases. Microstructures consisting of colonies or clusters were not observed. The corrosion testing of these materials was done in 0.9% NaCl aerated solution at 25 degrees C using potentiodynamic polarization curves and ac impedance measurements. The corrosion process in these multiphase systems can be interpreted as the sum of more than one electrodissolution process and the posterior formation of corrosion films. on each electrode, the corrosion film is formed by different mechanisms. The influence of potential on electrochemical behavior of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy under simulate physiological conditions was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results were compared with those obtained by potentiodynamic polarization curves. All measurements were carried out in Hank's aerated solution at 25degreesC, at pH 7.8 and at different potentials (corrosion potential, 0 mV(SCE), 1000 mV(SCE), and 2000 mV(SCE)). The EIS spectra exhibited a two-step or a two-time constant system, suggesting the formation of a two-layer oxide film on the metal surface. The high corrosion resistance, displayed by this alloy in electrochemical polarization tests, is due to the dense inner layer, while its osseointegration ability can be ascribed to the presence of the outer porous layer. Polysiloxane hybrid films were deposited on stainless steel by dip-coating using a sol prepared by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), followed by radical polymerization of methacrylic moieties. The TEOS/MPTS ratio was chosen equal to 2 and the Ce/Si ratio varied between 0.01 and 0.1. The effects of cerium concentration and valence (Ce(III) and Ce (IV)) on the structural features of polysiloxane films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The corrosion protection of stainless steel by the hybrid coatings was investigated by XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves, after immersion in saline and acid solutions. The NMR results have shown for Ce(IV) doped films a high degree of polycondensation of up to 89%. Electrochemical analysis has evidenced that hybrid films with the lowest Ce concentration act as an efficient diffusion barrier by increasing the corrosion resistance and reducing the current densities up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to bare stainless steel. The analysis of structural effects induced by Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species, performed by XPS, indicates that the improved corrosion protection of Ce(IV) doped films might be mainly related to the enhanced polymerization of siloxane groups. Spontaneous deposition and electrochemical deposition by potential perturbation programs were used to place cerium-containing species on platinum surfaces in acid solution. Cyclic voltammetric profiles of cerium-modified platinum surfaces obtained after potentiostatic or potentiodynamic procedures (applied in the true hydrogen evolution region) differ from those recorded after spontaneous methods. However, the catalytic effects are nearly the same on these cerium-modified platinum surfaces for methanol electrooxidation, i.e. lower onset potential values for the anodic reaction. Besides, a different electrocatalytic effect was observed at large positive potentials on methanol oxidation due to the cerium oxide capability of oxygen storage. This effect is observed on platinum modified by a drastic potentiostatic procedure (by applying -2.0 V) in cerium(IV) acid solution. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Results are presented on the mechanism of passivation of Co-Cr-Mo biological implant alloys in physiological serum using open circuit potentiometry, potentiodynamic curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The potential dependence of impedance data and the analysis of the parameters obtained indicate a progressive diminution of the initial layer thickness and the simultaneous formation of a second higher resistive layer. In more severe conditions than the existent in human body, the metallographic examination of the alloy surface shows localized corrosion in interdendritric regions. Elemental analysis of the surface reveals the presence of higher chromium content in these regions. The presence of chlorine was not detected, which suggested that during preferential attack, soluble species are also formed.

Co3O4 can be used as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction. The macro and microstructure of the oxide, obtained by compacting and sintering lithium-doped Co3O4 powder in atmosphere of dry air and in conditions of controlled temperature and time was analyzed by metallographic techniques. The porous material was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS combined techniques. For working temperatures up to 1200°C, the pellet was consituted of particles with varying sizes over a wide range of particle size and, at higher temperatures CoO is formed and polymorphic transformation was observed. The materials were also characterized electrochemically in alkaline media by open circuit potential and potentiodynamic I/E measurements. The results were compared to those previously prepared by others by thermal deposition.

This job aim has been to study the aqueous corrosion of the 7xxx heattreatable aluminium alloys, used in the aeronautical industry. The 7010, 7050 and 7475 alloys, have been supplied in the T7 condition and submitted to the annealed and aging thermal treatments of in order to study their behaviours front to corrosion in 5% NaCl pH 6,0, air-saturated and deaerated solutions. The electrochemical study has been accomplished through potential measures in open circuit, potentiodynamic polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The aged alloy resulted to be the most resistant to corrosion and annealed the less resistant ones. In spite of it they have different chemical compositions, in each mean, the alloy with the same thermal treatment has behaved in a similar way. In aerated solution, the process is controlled by oxygen diffusion and in oxygen absence for dissolution through a film. Hardness and mass loss measures, after corrosion test, have supported this research.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the corrosion product on the surface of silver, employing H2SO4 (0.5M) as electrolyte. The electrochemical parameters, Ecor, Icor, V cor and Rp were obtained after analyzing the potentiodynamic polarization curve in which two peaks were observed. The smallest (passive region) is attributed to the Cl- traces from the reference electrode, with micro-cracks. The second peak (in the transpassivation region) corresponds to the polarization curve of silver in H2SO 4 without contaminants. SEM images and EDS analysis reveal images of a surface layer on silver, consisting of structures containing sulfur, oxygen, silver and chloride, as the corrosion product. On this layer silver sulfate crystals were observed, which occurs during the formation of silver chloride nanocrystals with different morphologies, when chloride ions were added to the electrolyte medium. ©The Electrochemical Society.

In the present paper we investigated the effect of adsorbed PVA on Pt electrodes on classic electrochemical processes such as hydrogen UPD, oxygen reduction and CO electro-oxidation. Upon adsorption PVA blocks roughly 50% of the hydrogen sites and can not be removed from the Pt surface through cycling in the potential range of 0.05-1.0 V vs. RHE. Potentiodynamic experiments under controlled hydrodynamic conditions provided by rotating disk electrode experiments showed a negative impact of the adsorbed PVA on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Cyclic-voltammetry results revealed that not even CO was able to remove PVA from the Pt surface. Regarding the oxidation of CO, the adsorbed polymer positively shifted the CO oxidation peak potential, therefore higher potentials are required to free the Pt surface from CO poisoning. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced that the presence of PVA shifted the linearly bound CO frequency toward higher wavenumbers, a process found to be independent of the Pt surface orientation. In situ electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy results showed that PVA also impacted the electronic properties of platinum by decreasing the occupancy of the Pt conducting 5d band. Our findings clearly support the efforts toward understanding the nature of the interaction between polymers and metallic surfaces as well as the impact on technological applications (e.g. in PEMFCs). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Siloxane-polymethyl methacrylate hybrid films containing functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were deposited by dip-coating on carbon steel substrates from a sol prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-methacryloxy propyl-trimethoxysilane, followed by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane. The correlation between the structural properties and corrosion protection efficiency was studied as a function of the molar ratio of nanotubes carbon to silicon, varied in the range between 0.1% and 5%. 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric measurements have shown that hybrids containing carbon nanotubes have a similar degree of polycondensation and thermal stability as the undoped matrix and exhibit and excellent adhesion to the substrate. Microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed a very good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix and the presence of carboxylic groups allowing covalent bonding with the end-siloxane nodes. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate that CNTs containing coatings maintain the excellent corrosion protection efficiency of the hybrids, showing even a superior performance in acidic solution. The nanocomposite structure acts as efficient corrosion barrier, increasing the total impedance by 4 orders of magnitude and reducing the current densities by more than 3 orders of magnitude, compared to the bare steel electrode. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The sluggish kinetics of ethanol oxidation on Pt-based electrodes is one of the major drawbacks to its use as a liquid fuel in direct ethanol fuel cells, and considerable efforts have been made to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, we report an investigation on the effect of the Pt microstructure (well-dispersed versus agglomerated nanoparticles) and the catalyst support (carbon Vulcan, SnO2, and RuO2) on the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and its major adsorbed intermediate, namely, carbon monoxide. By using several structural characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, along with potentiodynamic and potentiostatic electrochemical experiments, we show that by altering both the Pt microstructure and the support, the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol can be improved up to a factor of 12 times compared to well-dispersed carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles. As a result of a combined effect, the interaction of Pt agglomerates with SnO2 yielded the highest current densities among all materials studied. The differences in the activity are discussed in terms of structural and electronic properties as well as by mass transport effects, providing valuable insights to the development of more active materials. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
