A linear photodiode array spectrometer based, high resolution interrogation technique for fiber Bragg grating sensors is demonstrated. Spline interpolation and Polynomial Approximation Algorithm (PAA) are applied to the data points acquired by the spectrometer to improve the original PAA based interrogation method. Thereby fewer pixels are required to achieve the same resolution as original. Theoretical analysis indicates that if the FWHM of a FBG covers more than 3 pixels, the resolution of central wavelength shift will arrive at less than 1 pm. While the number of pixels increases to 6, the nominal resolution will decrease to 0.001 pm. Experimental result shows that Bragg wavelength resolution of similar to 1 pm is obtained for a FBG with FWHM of similar to 0.2 nm using a spectrometer with a pixel resolution of similar to 70 pm.

The mechanism of beam splitting and principle of wide-field-of-view compensation of modified Savart polariscope in the wide-field-of-view polarization interference imaging spectrometer (WPIIS) are analyzed and discussed. Formulas for the lateral displacement and optical path difference (OPD) produced by the modified Savart polariscope are derived by ray-tracing method. The theoretical and practical guidance is thereby provided for the study, design, modulation, experiment and engineering of the polarization interference imaging spectrometers and other birefringent Fourier-transform spectrometers based on Savart polariscopes. This paper describes the design of an interference imaging spectrometer. A static Polarization Imaging Spectrometer (PIS) based on a single Savart polariscope has been developed. It produces the interferogram and target's image in the spatial domain which are recorded by using a two-dimensional (2D) CCD detector. Imaging lens localizes the interference fringes and target's image coincident with the plane of detector, thereby facilitating an extremely compact design. The spectrum of the input light is reconstructed through the Fourier-transform of the interferogram. The total optics is as small as 20 x 6 cm phi in size and the spectral resolution of the prototype system is 97.66 cm(-1) between 25,000 and 10, 000 cm(-1). The polarization interference imaging device has advantages of ultra-compact size, wide field of view, high throughput and without any moving parts. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Based on the data processing technologies of interferential spectrometer, a sort of real-time data processing system on chip of interferential imaging spectrometer was studied based on large capacitance and high speed field programmable gate array( FPGA) device. The system integrates both interferograrn sampling and spectrum rebuilding on a single chip of FPGA and makes them being accomplished in real-time with advantages such as small cubage, fast speed and high reliability. It establishes a good technical foundation in the applications of imaging spectrometer on target detection and recognition in real-time.

In order to design and fabricate a spectrometer for the infrared range widely used in the different applications, Volume Phase Grating (VPG) with. low Polarization Dependence Loss (PDL) and high efficiency has been adopted as the dispersion element. VPG is constructed by coating an optical substrate with a thin film of dichromated. gelatin and exposing the film to two mutually coherent laser beams to form index modulation. The diffraction efficiency for a VPG is governed by Bragg effects. The depth (d) and index modulation contrast of the grating structure control the efficiency at which the light is diffracted when the Bragg condition is satisfied. Gradient index lens with high performance and low aberration are used as collimating system instead of standard lens. The spot diagrams and MTF curve of the collimating lens are shown in the paper. The receive system is InCaAs photodiode (PD) array including 512 pixels with 25 mum pitch. The spectrum resolution of the spectrometer reaches to 0.2nm and wavelength accuracy is 40pm.

Multiphoton ionization of binary mixed clusters (C5H5N)(x)-(H2O)(y) at 532, 355 and 266 nm laser wavelengths has been investigated using TOF mass spectrometer. The experiments showed that almost all the products were protonated ions, At 532 and 355 nm, the products were mainly protonated pyridine clusters (C5H5N)(n)-H+, while at 266 nm, mixed binary cluster ions (C5H5N)(m)- (H2O)(n)-H+ appeared. It was found that the abundance of the [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) ions was abnormally high. The calculation indicated that the ion [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) is Of a kind of magic number structures with C-3v symmetry. A stepwise reaction mechanism is suggested that photoionization is followed by dissociation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A method for calibration of an audio-frequency (AF) ion trap mass spectrometer is described. The method is proposed to surmount the obstacle that there is a lack of a proper calibrant for mass spectrometers in the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) range of 10(6) to 10(10). To calibrate such mass spectra, we determine the point of ejection, q(eject), on the stability diagram of the ion trap operated in a mass-selective axial instability mode. This is accomplished by measuring the radial secular frequencies (and therefore, the m/z value) of a single trapped particle using a light scattering method, followed by monitoring the action of particle ejection in real time to obtain the q(eject). A delayed ejection with q(eject) = 0.949 +/- 0.004 is found at a trap driving frequency of Ohm/2pi = 200-600Hz. Theoretical analysis for the origin of the delayed ejection indicates that the delay is predominantly resulted from the existence of multipole components in the fields due to trap imperfections. Inclusion of -3% of the octopole with respect to the basic quadrupole field can satisfactorily account for our observations. An m/z accuracy approaching 0.1% is attainable after proper calibration of the AF ion trap mass spectrometer. (Int J Mass Spectrom 214 (2002) 63-73) (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Procedures that allow the realization of resonance electron capture (REC) mode on a commercial triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer, after some simple modifications, are described, REC mass spectrometry (MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments were performed and spectra for some compounds were recorded. In particular, the charge-remote fragmentation (CRF) spectra of [M - H](-) ions of docosanoic and docosenoic acids under low-energy collisionally activated dissociation (CAD) conditions were obtained, and showed that there were no significant differences for [M - H](-) ions produced at different resonances (i,e. for [M - H](-) ions with different structures). This observation was explained on the basis of results obtained from deuterium-labeled fatty acids, which showed that different CRF ions (but with the same m/z value in the absence of labels) could be produced by different mechanisms, and all of them were obviously realized under CAD conditions that made spectra practically indistinguishable. The other example, which compared the REC-MS/MS spectrum of [M - H](-) ions and EI-MS/MS spectrum of M+. ions of daidzein, demonstrated the potential of the REC-MS/MS technique for more complex structure elucidation.
