We propose a technique for dynamic full-range Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography by using sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry, where both the full-range structural information and depth-resolved dynamic information are obtained. A novel frequency-domain filtering algorithm is proposed to reconstruct a time-dependent complex spectral interferogram from the sinusoidally phase-modulated interferogram detected with a high-rate CCD camera. By taking the amplitude and phase of the inverse Fourier transform of the complex spectral interferogram, a time-dependent full-range cross-sectional image and depth-resolved displacement are obtained. Displacement of a sinusoidally vibrating glass cover slip behind a fixed glass cover slip is measured with subwavelength sensitivity to demonstrate the depth-resolved dynamic imaging capability of our system. We demonstrate a full-range parallel Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) in which a tomogram free of mirror images as well as DC and autocorrelation terms is obtained in parallel. The phase and amplitude of two-dimensional spectral interferograms are accurately detected by using sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry and a two-dimensional CCD camera, which allows for the reconstruction of two-dimensional complex spectral interferograms. By line-by-line inverse Fourier transformation of the two-dimensional complex spectral interferogram, a full-range parallel FD-OCT is realized. Tomographic images of two separated glass coverslips obtained with our method are presented as a proof-of-principle experiment.

A method using two prisms for measurement of small dynamic angles is proposed in which the measurement is based on a simple tangent equation and a phase-modulating interferometer with a laser diode to measure dynamic optical path differences with higher accuracy. Owing to the simple tangent equation, the symmetry requirement on the two prisms in the optical configuration is eliminated, and easy measurement of the separations between two parallel beams with a position-sensitive detector is achieved. Small-dynamic-angle measurements are experimentally demonstrated with high accuracy. (C) 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

The transmission performance of multi-channel adaptively modulated optical OFDM (AMOOFDM) signals is numerically investigated, for the first time, in optical amplification- and chromatic dispersion compensation-free, intensity-modulation and direct-detection systems incorporating directly modulated DFB lasers (DMLs). It is shown that adaptive modulation not only reduces significantly the nonlinear WDM impairments induced by the effects of cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing, but also compensates effectively for the DML-induced frequency chirp effect. In comparison with identical modulation, adaptive modulation improves the maximum achievable signal transmission capacity of a central channel by a factor of 1.3 and 3.6 for 40km and 80km SMFs, respectively, with corresponding dynamic input optical power ranges being extended by approximately 5dB. In addition, adaptive modulation also enables cross-channel complementary modulation format mapping, leading to an improved transmission capacity of the entire WDM system. We numerically investigate the main constrains for high efficiency wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Using multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques, high efficiency wavelength conversion of DPSK signals is achieved with the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects effectively suppressed. Our analysis shows that there is a compromise between conversion efficiency and converted idler degradation. By optimizing the pump phase modulation configuration, the converted DPSK idler's degradation can be dramatically decreased through balancing SBS suppression and pump phase modulation degradation. Our simulation results also show that these multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques are more appropriate for the future high bit rate systems.

We propose a silicon ring-based optical modulation method to perform chirp-free optical modulations. In this scheme, we locate the light to be modulated at the resonance of the ring and tune the coupling coefficient between the ring and the straight waveguide by using a push-pull coupling structure. The chirp-free phase modulation can be achieved by varying the coupling coefficient in a large range, which can modify the coupling condition of the ring such that the input light experiences an abrupt phase shift of pi at the output. If the coupling coefficient is adjusted in a small range such that the coupling condition of the ring is kept unchanged, only the intensity of the light will be modulated. This leads to chirp-free intensity modulation. Our simulations performed at 10 Gbits/s confirm the feasibility of the proposal. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is fabricated, in which two directional couplers serve as power splitter and combiner. The free carrier plasma dispersion effect of Si is adopted to achieve the phase modulation and the consequent intensity modulation of optical fields. The device presents an insertion loss of 2.61 dB and an extinction ratio of 19.6 dB. The rise time and fall time are 676 ns and 552 ns, respectively. Detailed analysis and explanation of the performance behaviors are also presented. (c) 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

A novel Si-based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) electrooptic phase modulator including two shunt oxide layer capacitors integrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide is simulated and analyzed. The refractive index near the two gate oxide layers is modified by the free carrier dispersion effect induced by applying a positive bias on the electrodes. The theoretical calculation of free carrier distribution coupled with optical guided mode propagation characteristics has been carried out. The influence of the structure parameters such as the width and the doping level of the active region are analyzed. A half-wave voltage V-pi = 4 V is demonstrated with an 8-mm active region length and a 4-mu m width of an inner rib under an accumulation mode. When decreasing the inner rib width to 1 mu m, the phase modulation efficiency is even higher, and the rise and fall times reach 50 and 40 ps, respectively, with a 1.0 x 10(17) cm(-3) doping level in the active region.

Advanced modulation formats have become increasingly important as telecoms engineers strive for improved tolerance to both linear and nonlinear fibre-based transmission impairments. Two important modulation schemes are Duobinary (DB) and Alternate-mark inversion (AMI) [1] where transmission enhancement results from auxiliary phase modulation. As advanced modulation formats displace Return-to-zero On-Off Keying (RZ-OOK), inter-modulation converters will become increasingly important. If the modulation conversion can be performed at high bitrates with a small number of operations per bit, then all-optical techniques may offer lower energy consumption compared to optical-electronic-optical approaches. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate an all-optical system incorporating a pair of hybrid-integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) gates which translate RZ-OOK to RZ-DB or RZ-AMI at 42.6 Gbps. This scheme includes a wavelength conversion to arbitrary output wavelength and has potential for high-level photonic integration, scalability to higher bitrates, and should exhibit regenerative properties [2].

High volumes of data traffic along with bandwidth hungry applications, such as cloud computing and video on demand, is driving the core optical communication links closer and closer to their maximum capacity. The research community has clearly identifying the coming approach of the nonlinear Shannon limit for standard single mode fibre [1,2]. It is in this context that the work on modulation formats, contained in Chapter 3 of this thesis, was undertaken. The work investigates the proposed energy-efficient four-dimensional modulation formats. The work begins by studying a new visualisation technique for four dimensional modulation formats, akin to constellation diagrams. The work then carries out one of the first implementations of one such modulation format, polarisation-switched quadrature phase-shift keying (PS-QPSK). This thesis also studies two potential next-generation fibres, few-mode and hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre. Chapter 4 studies ways to experimentally quantify the nonlinearities in few-mode fibre and assess the potential benefits and limitations of such fibres. It carries out detailed experiments to measure the effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering, self-phase modulation and four-wave mixing and compares the results to numerical models, along with capacity limit calculations. Chapter 5 investigates hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre, where such fibres are predicted to have a low-loss minima at a wavelength of 2μm. To benefit from this potential low loss window requires the development of telecoms grade subsystems and components. The chapter will outline some of the development and characterisation of these components. The world's first wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) subsystem directly implemented at 2μm is presented along with WDM transmission over hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre at 2μm.
