The aim of this work is to investigate the structural properties of the (Pb1-xErx)TiO3 (PET) powders, with x varying from 0.01 to 0.08, prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Combined X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculation reveal a diffuse phase-transition of a tetragonal to a cubic phase. The crystalline models built allowed to calculate electronic properties and to analyze the behavior of the doping element in the structure of the material, which are consistent with the experimental results that indicate the beginning of phase-transition from tetragonal to cubic. Pb1-xLaxTiO3 thin films, (X=0.0; 13 and 0.27mol%) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(111), Si(100) and glass substrates by spin coating, and annealed in the 200-300°C range in an O2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used for the microstructural characterization of the thin films. Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature has been observed in thin films of (PbLa)TiO3. The films deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates present PL intensity greater than those deposited on glass and silicon substrates. The intensity of PL in these thin films was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment and lanthanum molar concentration. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Strontium-modified lead titanate thin films with composition Pb1-xSrxTiO3 were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using the polymeric precursor method. The structural phase evolution as a function of the Sr contents was studied using micro-Raman scattering, specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results showed a gradual change from tetragonal to cubic structure, the transition occurring at about x = 0.58. The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the strontium concentration increases. These features are correlated with a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the strontium concentration increases.

Structural, microstructural and ferroelectric properties of Pb0.90Ca0.10TiO3 (PCT10) thin films deposited using La0.50Sr0.50CoO3 (LSCO) thin films which serve only as a buffer layer were compared with properties of the thin films grown using a platinum-coated silicon substrate. LSCO and PCT10 thin films were grown using the chemical solution deposition method and heat-treated in an oxygen atmosphere at 700 °C and 650 °C in a tube oven, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy results showed that PCT10 thin films deposited directly on a platinum-coated silicon substrate exhibit a strong tetragonal character while thin films with the LSCO buffer layer displayed a smaller tetragonal character. Surface morphology observations by atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that PCT10 thin films with a LSCO buffer layer had a smoother surface and smaller grain size compared with thin films grown on a platinum-coated silicon substrate. Additionally, the capacitance versus voltage curves and hysteresis loop measurement indicated that the degree of polarization decreased for PCT10 thin films on a LSCO buffer layer compared with PCT10 thin films deposited directly on a platinum-coated silicon substrate. This phenomenon can be described as the smaller shift off-center of Ti atoms along the c-direction 〈001〉 inside the TiO6 octahedron unit due to the reduction of lattice parameters. Remnant polarization (P r ) values are about 30 μC/cm2 and 12 μC/cm2 for PCT10/Pt and PCT10/LSCO thin films, respectively. Results showed that the LSCO buffer layer strongly influenced the structural, microstructural and ferroelectric properties of PCT10 thin films. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The Pb1-xLaxZryTi1-yO3 system is a perovskite ABO(3) structured material which presents ferroelectric properties and has been used as capacitors, actuators, transducers and electro-optic devices. In this paper, we describe the synthesis and the characterization of Pb0.89La0.11Zr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PLZT11) nanostructured material. The precursor polymeric method and the spark plasma sintering technique were respectively used to prepare ceramic samples. In order to compare the effect of grain size, microcrystalline PLZT11 ceramic samples were also prepared. PLZT11 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction technique which results show a reduction on the degree of tetragonality as the average grain size decreases. Moreover, the grain size decrease to a nanometer range induces a diffuse behavior on the dielectric permittivity curves as a function of the temperature and a reduction on the dielectric permittivity magnitude. Furthermore, the large number of grain boundaries due to the nanometer size gives rise to a dielectric anomaly. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The magnetic susceptibility of Pb(1-x)Ce(x)A (A=S, Se and Te) crystals with Ce3+ concentrations 0.006 <= x <= 0.036 was investigated in the temperature range from 2 K to 300 K. The magnetic susceptibility data was found to be consistent with a E-2(5/2) lowest manifold for Ce3+ ions with a crystal-field splitting Delta=E(Gamma(8))-E(Gamma(7)) of about 340 K, 440 K and 540 K for Pb1-xCexTe, Pb1-xCexSe, and Pb1-xCexS, respectively. For all the three compounds the doublet Gamma(7) lies below the Gamma(8) quadruplet which confirms the substitution of Pb2+ by Ce3+ ions in the host crystals. The observed values for the crystal-field splitting are in good agreement with the calculated ones based on the point-charge model. Moreover, the effective Lande factors were determined by X-band (similar to 9.5 GHz), electron paramagnetic measurements (EPR) to be g=1.333, 1.364, and 1.402 for Ce ions in PbA, A = S. Se and Te, respectively. The small difference with the predicted Lande factor g of 10/7 for the Gamma(7) (J=5/2) ground state was attributed to crystal-field admixture. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract Background The present study examined absolute alpha power using quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) in bilateral temporal and parietal cortices in novice soldiers under the influence of methylphenidate (MPH) during the preparatory aiming period in a practical pistol-shooting task. We anticipated higher bi-hemispheric cortical activation in the preparatory period relative to pre-shot baseline in the methylphenidate group when compared with the control group because methylphenidate has been shown to enhance task-related cognitive functions. Methods Twenty healthy, novice soldiers were equally distributed in control (CG; n = 10) and MPH groups 10 mg (MG; n = 10) using a randomized, double blind design. Subjects performed a pistol-shooting task while electroencephalographic activity was acquired. Results We found main effects for group and practice blocks on behavioral measures, and interactions between group and phases on electroencephalographic measures for the electrodes T3, T4, P3 and P4. Regarding the behavioral measures, the MPH group demonstrated significantly poorer in shooting performance when compared with the control and, in addition, significant increases in the scores over practice blocks were found on both groups. In addition, regarding the electroencephalographic data, we observed a significant increase in alpha power over practice blocks, but alpha power was significantly lower for the MPH group when compared with the placebo group. Moreover, we observed a significant decrease in alpha power in electrodes T4 and P4 during PTM. Conclusion Although we found no correlation between behavioral and EEG data, our findings show that MPH did not prevent the learning of the task in healthy subjects. However, during the practice blocks (PBs) it also did not favor the performance when compared with control group performance. It seems that the CNS effects of MPH demanded an initial readjustment period of integrated operations relative to the sensorimotor system. In other words, MPH seems to provoke a period of initial instability due to a possible modulation in neural activity, which can be explained by lower levels of alpha power (i.e., higher cortical activity). However, after the end of the PB1 a new stabilization was established in neural circuits, due to repetition of the task, resulting higher cortical activity during the task. In conclusion, MPH group performance was not initially superior to that of the control group, but eventually exceeded it, albeit without achieving statistical significance.

Fibronectin type II (Fn2) module-containing proteins in the male genital tract are characterized by different numbers of Fn2 modules. Predominantly two classes exist which are distinct by having either two or four Fn2 modules. Minor variants with three Fn2 modules were also found in the human and the porcine epididymis. To reveal their relationship, mRNAs and proteins of representatives of these classes were studied in human, in Sus scrofa, and in rodents. Adult boars expressed members of both classes, i.e. ELSPBP1 and pB1, in subsequent regions of the epididymis, and both were under androgenic control. Human and rodent epididymides, on the other hand, alternatively contained only representatives of one of these two classes, i.e. ELSPBP1 in the human and two different pB1-related counterparts in rodents. ELSPBP1 and pB1-related genomic sequences were closely linked in chromosomal regions HSA 19q and SSC 6 q11-q21; conserved synteny between these regions is well established. On the other hand, in a syntenic region on mouse chromosome 7, ELSPBP1-related sequences were lacking. Tight binding to the sperm membrane via a choline-mediated mechanism was a common feature of the two classes of Fn2-module proteins, suggesting related function(s). However, differences in their regionalized expression patterns along the male genital tract as well as in association sites on the sperm surface suggested a species-specific sequential order in sperm binding.
Processing and characterization of PbSnTe-based thermoelectric materials made by mechanical alloying

The research reported in this dissertation investigates the processes required to mechanically alloy Pb1-xSnxTe and AgSbTe2 and a method of combining these two end compounds to result in (y)(AgSbTe2)–(1 - y)(Pb1-xSnxTe) thermoelectric materials for power generation applications. In general, traditional melt processing of these alloys has employed high purity materials that are subjected to time and energy intensive processes that result in highly functional material that is not easily reproducible. This research reports the development of mechanical alloying processes using commercially available 99.9% pure elemental powders in order to provide a basis for the economical production of highly functional thermoelectric materials. Though there have been reports of high and low ZT materials fabricated by both melt alloying and mechanical alloying, the processing-structure-properties-performance relationship connecting how the material is made to its resulting functionality is poorly understood. This is particularly true for mechanically alloyed material, motivating an effort to investigate bulk material within the (y)(AgSbTe2)–(1 - y)(Pb1-xSnx- Te) system using the mechanical alloying method. This research adds to the body of knowledge concerning the way in which mechanical alloying can be used to efficiently produce high ZT thermoelectric materials. The processes required to mechanically alloy elemental powders to form Pb1-xSnxTe and AgSbTe2 and to subsequently consolidate the alloyed powder is described. The composition, phases present in the alloy, volume percent, size and spacing of the phases are reported. The room temperature electronic transport properties of electrical conductivity, carrier concentration and carrier mobility are reported for each alloy and the effect of the presence of any secondary phase on the electronic transport properties is described. An mechanical mixing approach for incorporating the end compounds to result in (y)(AgSbTe2)–(1-y)(Pb1-xSnxTe) is described and when 5 vol.% AgSbTe2 was incorporated was found to form a solid solution with the Pb1-xSnxTe phase. An initial attempt to change the carrier concentration of the Pb1-xSnxTe phase was made by adding excess Te and found that the carrier density of the alloys in this work are not sensitive to excess Te. It has been demonstrated using the processing techniques reported in this research that this material system, when appropriately doped, has the potential to perform as highly functional thermoelectric material.
