Palazzo Italia Expo: soluzioni costruttive innovative poste al vaglio di un'analisi critica

A partire da un’analisi complessiva della struttura di Palazzo Italia Expo, è stata approfondita nel dettaglio la realizzazione del rivestimento. Sono emerse soluzioni costruttive fortemente innovative, dettate da necessità architettoniche ben precise: si è cercato di conciliare il concept della foresta urbana con le esigenze funzionali che il palazzo doveva soddisfare. Nella scelta del materiale da rivestimento si è optato per un “cemento biodinamico” brevettato per l’occasione da ItalCementi, e studiato anch’esso con obiettivi ben definiti: ricercare una brillantezza e purezza del colore durevole nel tempo, e avvicinarsi sempre più all’esigenza di sostenibilità ambientale delle strutture. Si è cercato di analizzare l'effettiva capacità di questo cemento di soddisfare i requisiti prefissati nel corso tempo, anche attraverso un'analisi comparativa con il cemento utilizzato nella chiesa Dives in Misericordia a Roma di Richard Meier.

Shakedown stress analysis of insulated rail joint (IRJ)

A finite element numerical simulation is carried out to examine stress distributions on railhead in the cicinity of the endpost of an insulated rail joint. The contact patch and pressure distribution are considered using modified Hertzian simulation. A combined elasto-plastic material modelling available in Abaqus is employed in the simulation. A dynamic load factor of 1.21 is considered in modelling for the wheel load based on a previous study as part of this on going research. Shakedown theorem is employed in this study. A peak pressure load which is above the shakedown limit is determined as input load. As a result, a progressive damage in the railhead has been captured as depicted in the equivalent plastic strain plot.

Impact of the social networking applications for health information management for patients and physicians

Most social network users hold more than one social network account and utilize them in different ways depending on the digital context. For example, friendly chat on Facebook, professional discussion on LinkedIn, and health information exchange on PatientsLikeMe. Thus many web users need to manage many disparate profiles across many distributed online sources. Maintaining these profiles is cumbersome, time consuming, inefficient, and leads to lost opportunity. In this paper we propose a framework for multiple profile management of online social networks and showcase a demonstrator utilising an open source platform. The result of the research enables a user to create and manage an integrated profile and share/synchronise their profiles with their social networks. A number of use cases were created to capture the functional requirements and describe the interactions between users and the online services. An innovative application of this project is in public health informatics. We utilize the prototype to examine how the framework can benefit patients and physicians. The framework can greatly enhance health information management for patients and more importantly offer a more comprehensive personal health overview of patients to physicians.
