CO2-in-Water (C/W) emulsion was formed by using a nonionic surfactant of poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-poly (ethylene oxide) (P123), and palladium nanoparticles were synthesized in situ in the present work. The catalytic performance of Pd nanoparticles in the C/W emulsion has been discussed for a selective hydrogenation of citral. Much higher activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 6313 h(-1) has been obtained in this unique C/W emulsion compared to that in the W/C microemulsion (TOF, 23 h(-1)), since the reaction was taking place not only in the surfactant shell but also on the inner surface of the CO2 core in the C/W emulsion. Moreover, citronellal was obtained with a higher selectivity for that it was extracted to a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) phase as formed and thus its further hydrogenation was prohibited. The Pd nanoparticles could be recycled several times and still retain the same selectivity, but it showed a little aggregation leading to a slight decrease in conversion.

A novel aliphatic polycarbonate from renewable resource was prepared by copolymerization of furfuryl glycidyl ether and CO2 using rare earth ternary catalyst; its number-average molecular weight (M-n) reached 13.3 x 10(4) g/mol. The furfuryl glycidyl ether and CO2 copolymer (PFGEC) was easy to become yellowish at ambient atmosphere due to post polymerization cross-linking reaction oil the furan ring; the gel content was 17.2 wt % after 24 h exposure to air at room temperature. PFGEC could be stabilized by addition of antioxidant 1010 (tetrakis[methylene (3.5-di(tert-butyl)-4-hydroxhydrocinnamate)]methane) in 0.5-3 wt % after copolymerization. The Diels-Alder (DA) reaction between N-phenylmaleimide and the pendant furan ring was also effective for the stabilization of PFGEC by reducing the amount of furan ring and introducing bulky groups into PFGEC. The cyclization degree could reach 72.1% when the molar ratio of N-phenylmaleimide to furan ring was 3: 1, and no gel was observed after 24 h exposure to air. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of PFGEC was 6.8 degrees C, and it increased to 40.3 degrees C after DA reaction (molar ratio of N-phenylmaleimide to furan ring was 3: 1).

Physical gelation in the concentrated Pluronic F127/D2O solution has been studied by a combination of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Monte Carlo simulation. A 15% F127/D2O solution exhibits a sol-gel transition at low temperature and a gel-sol transition at the higher temperature, as evidenced by SANS and Monte Carlo simulation studies. Our SANS and simulation results also suggest that the sol-gel transition is dominated by the formation of a percolated polymer network, while the gel-sol transition is determined by the loss of bound solvent. Furthermore, different diffusion behaviors of different bound solvents and free solvent are observed. We expect that this approach can be further extended to study phase behaviors of other systems with similar sol-gel phase diagrams.

The isothermal crystallization and melting behaviors of poly(propylene carbonate) end-capped with benzenesulfonyl/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PPC-BS/PVA) blends over rich PVA composition range were first investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PPS-BS/PVA interaction parameter, chi(12), calculated from equilibrium melting temperature depression was -0.44, revealing miscibility of PPC-BS with PVA in the melt and favorable interactions. The temperature dependence of crystallization rate constant at initial crystallization stage was analyzed using the modified Lauritzen-Hoffman expression. The chain width, a(0), the thickness of a monomolecular layer, b(0), the fold and lateral surface-free energies, sigma(e) and sigma, and the work of chain folding, q, for neat PVA were first reckoned to be 4.50 Angstrom, 4.78 Angstrom, 76.0 erg.cm(-2), and 4.70 kcal.mol(-1), respectively. The values of sigma(e) and q for PVA in PPC-BS/PVA blends exhibited a maximum in the neighborhood of 10/90 PPC-BS/PV, respectively.

A composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) of (PEO)(10)LiClO4-Al2O3 was prepared and Pt and stainless steel(SS) blocking electrodes were used for an impedance study. It was found that the semicircle in the high frequency range and the straight line in the low frequency range depend upon different blocking electrodes and polarization potentials applied in the experiments. In the equivalent circuit. two constant phase elements (CPE) have been used instead of the pure geometrical and double layer capacitances. respectively. A theoretical line calculated from their estimated values has a good correlation with the experiment data. Moreover. the equivalent circuit also can be used to explain the impedance properties of Pt and stainless steel (SS) blocking electrodes both in the high and the low frequency ranges. The morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (PP/HDPE) blends in a wide range of compositions modified by a sequential Ziegler-Natta polymerization product (PP-PE) have been investigated. PP-PE contains multiple components such as PP, ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPC), and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The effects of PP-PE on the mechanical properties and morphology of the PP/HDPE blends are the aggregative results of all its individual components. Addition of PP-PE to the blends not only improved the tensile strength of the blends, but the elongation at break increased linearly while the moduli were nearly unchanged. Morphological studies show that the adhesion between the two phases in all the blends of different compositions is enhanced and the dispersed domain sizes of the blends are reduced monotonously with the increment of the content of PP-PE. PP-PE has been demonstrated to be a more effective compatibilizer than EPC. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the tensile strength of the blends depends most on the adhesion between the two phases and the elongation at break depends most on the domain size of the dispersed component. Rare earth trifluoroacetates, Ln(CF3CO2)(3) (Ln = thirteen rare earth elements), combined with R(n)AlH(3-n) (R = methyl, octyl, n = 3; R = ethyl, i-Butyl, n = 2, 3) were used as catalysts for the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF). The activity increased by adding propylene oxide (PO), as a promoter, to the polymerization system, producing high molecular weight polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). The effects of Ln, PO/Ln, and Al/Ln, and others on the polymerization of THF were also studied. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The phase behaviours of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)s (SAN) with poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and an optical method using a hot plate. The PECH/PVAc blends showed LCST behaviour. The observed miscibility is thought to be a result of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the alpha-hydrogen atoms of PECH and the carbonyl groups of PVAc. Two SAN copolymers with an acrylonitrile (AN) content of 18 wt% (SAN18) and 25 wt% (SAN25), respectively, were also found to exhibit miscibility with PECH. No phase separation occurred by heating up to about 280-degrees-C, and the individual blend has a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature. The formation of miscible PECH/SAN blends can be considered as a result of the intramolecular repulsion between styrene and AN units in SAN.

The acidic properties of TS-1 and Silicalite-I zeolites have been investigated by the solid-state MAS NMR technique capable of in situ sample pretreatment. As shown by a combination of the P-31 MAS NMR and H-1 MAS NMR techniques with trimethylphosphine, not only Bronsted acid sites but also Lewis acid sites exist in the TS-1 zeolites. Moreover, TS-1 zeolite is more acidic compared with Silicalite-1. The H-1, Si-29 MAS NMR spectra and the resonance related to Bronsted acid species in the P-31 MAS NMR spectra demonstrate clearly that the presence of titanium in the framework results in the formation of a new hydroxy group, titanols, which is more acidic than silanols of Silicalite-1. The P-31 MAS NMR measurements also illustrate convincingly the existence of at least two different Lewis acid species on the TS-1 zeolites. The conversion of propylene oxide into methoxypropanol catalyzed by TS-1 or Silicalite-I zeolite in methanol solution as a test reaction has also been described. With the increase of titanium in zeolite, TS-1 appears to have a higher activity during the reaction of propylene oxide to methoxypropanol.

Gels obtained by complexation of octablock star polyethylene oxide/polypropylene oxide copolymers (Tetronic 90R4) with -cyclodextrin (-CD) were evaluated as matrices for drug release. Both molecules are biocompatible so they can be potentially applied to drug delivery systems. Two different types of matrices of Tetronic 90R4 and -CD were evaluated: gels and tablets. These gels are capable to gelifying in situ and show sustained erosion kinetics in aqueous media. Tablets were prepared by freeze-drying and comprising the gels. Using these two different matrices, the release of two model molecules, L-tryptophan (Trp), and a protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), was evaluated. The release profiles of these molecules from gels and tablets prove that they are suitable for sustained delivery. Mathematical models were applied to the release curves from tablets to elucidate the drug delivery mechanism. Good correlations were found for the fittings of the release curves to different equations. The results point that the release of Trp from different tablets is always governed by Fickian diffusion, whereas the release of BSA is governed by a combination of diffusion and tablet erosion.

The self-assembly into wormlike micelles of a poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer Pluronic P84 in aqueous salt solution (2 M NaCl) has been studied by rheology, small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), and light scattering. Measurements of the flow curves by controlled stress rheometry indicated phase separation under flow. SAXS on solutions subjected to capillary flow showed alignment of micelles at intermediate shear rates, although loss of alignment was observed for high shear rates. For dilute solutions, SAXS and static light scattering data on unaligned samples could be superposed over three decades in scattering vector, providing unique information on the wormlike micelle structure over several length scales. SANS data provided information on even shorter length scales, in particular, concerning "blob" scattering from the micelle corona. The data could be modeled based on a system of semiflexible self-avoiding cylinders with a circular cross-section, as described by the wormlike chain model with excluded volume interactions. The micelle structure was compared at two temperatures close to the cloud point (47 degrees C). The micellar radius was found not to vary with temperature in this region, although the contour length increased with increasing temperature, whereas the Kuhn length decreased. These variations result in an increase of the low-concentration radius of gyration with increasing temperature. This was consistent with dynamic light scattering results, and, applying theoretical results from the literature, this is in agreement with an increase in endcap energy due to changes in hydration of the poly(ethylene oxide) blocks as the temperature is increased.
