The paper reports exchange-spring soft and hard ferrite nanocomposites synthesized by chemical co-precipitation with or without the application of ultrasonic vibration. The composites contained BaFe12O19 as the hard phase and CoFe2O4/MgFe2O4 as the soft phase. X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples in the optimum calcined condition indicated the presence of soft ferrites as face-centred cubic (fcc) and hard ferrites as hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure respectively. Temperature dependence of magnetization in the range of 20-700 degrees C demonstrated distinct presence of soft and hard ferrites as magnetic phases which are characterized by wide difference in magnetic anisotropy and coercivity. Exchange-spring mechanism led these nanocomposite systems to exchange-coupled, which ultimately produced convex hysteresis loops characteristic of a single-phase permanent magnet. Fairly high value of coercivity and maximum energy product were observed for the samples in the optimum calcined conditions with a maximum applied field of 1600 kA/m (2 T).

The present paper is aimed to understand the sub-processes triggered by rapid heating during spark plasma sintering as well as to assess the extent to which densification and properties of metallic materials can be enhanced using such superfast consolidation process. Using nanocrystalline Cu-Pb as a model system, the influence of Pb as well as TiB2 addition on the densification mechanisms and properties are discussed. Importantly, a high hardness of 2 GPa is achieved in Cu-based nanocomposites. (C) 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline/titaniurn dioxide nanocomposites were prepared using alpha-dextrose as surfactant and ammonium persulphate as an oxidant. The PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite is characterized by FTIR, XRD and TEM. The FTIR spectra revel that the presence of characteristic peaks of benzenoid, qunoide rings and metal-oxygen stretching. The XRD studies show the monoclinic structure of the nanocomposites. The TEM study shows that the size of TiO2 is in the order of 9 nm where as the composite size is of the order of 13 nm and further it was observed that the TiO2 particles are intercalated to form a core shell of PANI. The maximum sensing response for LPG is found to be 90% for 30 wt.% of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites at 400 ppm whereas for Benzene and Toluene it is negligibly small (<= 20%) and for the cyclohexane sensing response it is around 30% for different wt.%.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanocomposites, with MWCNT loading up to 44.4 weight percent (wt%), were prepared by the solvent mixing and casting method. Electron microscopy indicates high degree of dispersion of MWCNT in PVC matrix, achieved by ultrasonication without using any surfactants. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a significant monotonic enhancement in the thermal stability of nanocomposites by increasing the wt% of MWCNT. Electrical conductivity of nanocomposites followed the classical percolation theory and the conductivity prominently improved from 10(-7) to 9 S/cm as the MWCNT loading increased from 0.1 to 44.4 wt%. Low value of electrical percolation threshold similar to 0.2 wt% is achieved which is attributed to high aspect ratio and homogeneous dispersion of MWCNT in PVC. The analysis of the low temperature electrical resistivity data shows that sample of 1.9 wt% follows three dimensional variable range hopping model whereas higher wt% nanocomposite samples follow power law behavior. The magnetization versus applied field data for both bulk MWCNTs and nanocomposite of 44.4 wt% display ferromagnetic behavior with enhanced coercivities of 1.82 and 1.27 kOe at 10 K, respectively. The enhancement in coercivity is due to strong dipolar interaction and shape anisotropy of rod-shaped iron nanoparticles. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnS quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature, by varying pH value of the reaction mixture. Samples are characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, etc. Linear optical properties, including UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence emission characteristics, of as-prepared QDs are measured. Size dependent nonlinear optical property, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser fundamental radiation in the synthesized ZnS QDs, is reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, by using the standard Kurtz-Perry powder method. In not to study the possibility of the synthesized ZnS QDs in different device applications ZnS/PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) nanocomposites are also synthesized. The presence of weak chemical interaction between the polymer matrix and ZnS QDs is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites are studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques, which show that the composites are stable up to similar to 300 degrees C temperature. The dispersion of a softer phase in a metallic matrix reduces the coefficient of friction (COF), often at the expense of an increased wear rate at the tribological contact. To address this issue, unlubricated fretting wear tests were performed on spark plasma sintered Cu-Pb nanocomposites against bearing steel. The sintering temperature and the Pb content as well as the fretting parameters were judiciously selected and varied to investigate the role of microstructure (grain size, second-phase content) on the wear resistance properties of Cu-Pb nanocomposites. A combination of the lowest wear rate (similar to 1.5 x 10(-6) mm(3)/Nm) and a modest COF (similar to 0.4) was achieved for Cu-15 wt pct Pb nanocomposites. The lower wear rate of Cu-Pb nanocomposites with respect to unreinforced Cu is attributed to high hardness (similar to 2 to 3.5 GPa) of the matrix, Cu2O/Fe2O3-rich oxide layer formation at tribological interface, and exuding of softer Pb particles. The wear properties are discussed in reference to the characteristics of transfer layer on worn surface as well as subsurface damage probed using focused ion beam microscopy. Interestingly, the flash temperature has been found to have insignificant effect on the observed oxidative wear, and alternative mechanisms are proposed. Importantly, the wear resistance properties of the nanocomposites reveal a weak Hall-Petch-like relationship with grain size of nanocrystalline Cu. The Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) powders were synthesized by Co-precipitation method. The as prepared ferrite powders were incorporated into a polyaniline matrix at various volumetric ratios. The as prepared composites of ferrite and polyaniline powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM). The particle size of CoFe2O4 is found to be 20 nm. The saturation magnetization (M-s) of all the composites was found to be decreasing with decrease of ferrite content, while coercivity (H-c) remained at the value corresponding to pure cobalt ferrite nanopowders. The complex permittivity (epsilon' and epsilon `') and permeability (mu' and mu `') of composite samples were measured in the range of 1 MHz to 1.1 GHz. The value of epsilon' and mu' found to be increased with ferrite volume concentration.

An improved photocatalyst consisting of a nanocomposite of exfoliated graphite and titanium dioxide (EG-TiO2) was prepared. SEM and TEM micrographs showed that the spherical TiO2 nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the EG sheets. A four times photocatalytic enhancement was observed for this floating nanocomposite compared to TiO2 and EG alone for the degradation of eosin yellow. For all the materials, the reactions followed first order kinetics where for EG-TiO2, the rate constant was much higher than for EG and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of EG-TiO2 was ascribed to the capability of graphitic layers to accept and transport electrons from the excited TiO2, promoting charge separation. This indicates that carbon, a cheap and abundant material, can be a good candidate as an electron attracting reservoir for photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Influence of polymer morphology on the inception and the growth of electrical trees in unfilled low density polyethylene (LDPE) as well as LDPE filled with 1, 3 and 5% by weight nanoalumina samples stressed with 50 Hz ac voltage has been studied. It is seen that there is a significant improvement in tree inception voltage with filler loading in LDPE filled with nanoparticles. Tree inception voltage increased with the filler loading up to 3% by weight nanoalumina loading and showed a reduction at 5% by weight loading. Change in tree growth patterns from branch to bush as well as a slower tree growth with increase in filler loading in LDPE alumina nanocomposites were observed. The degree of crystallinity and change in crystalline morphology induced by the presence of alumina nanoparticles in LDPE was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC results show a similar melting behaviour for both unfilled LDPE and LDPE nanocomposites. However, there is a reduction in the degree of crystallinity for LDPE filled with 5% by weight nanoalumina. An increase in lamellae packing with increase in filler loadings and a highly disordered spherulitic structure for LDPE filled with 5% by weight nanoalumina was observed from the SEM images. The slow propagation of tree growth as well as reduction in tree inception voltage with increase in filler loadings were attributed to the morphological changes observed in the LDPE nanocomposites.

Accelerated electrothermal aging tests were conducted at a constant temperature of 60 degrees C and at different stress levels of 6 kV/mm, 7 kV/mm and 8 kV/mm on unfilled epoxy and epoxy filled with 5 wt% of nano alumina. The leakage current through the samples were continuously monitored and the variation in tan delta values with aging duration was monitored to predict the impending failure and the time to failure of the samples. It is observed that the time to failure of epoxy alumina nanocomposite samples is significantly higher as compared to the unfilled epoxy. Data from the experiments has been analyzed graphically by plotting the Weibull probability and theoretically by the linear least square regression analysis. The characteristic life obtained from the least square regression analysis has been used to plot the inverse power law curve. From the inverse power law curve, the life of the epoxy insulation with and without nanofiller loading at a stress level of 3 kV/mm, i.e. within the midrange of the design stress level of rotating machine insulation, has been obtained by extrapolation. It is observed that the life of epoxy alumina nanocomposite of 5 wt% filler loading is nine times higher than that of the unfilled epoxy.

Corona discharge is recognized as one of the mechanisms that can influence the surface hydrophobicity of Silicone Rubber (SR) because of the chemical changes that occur on its surface. In this study SR samples were exposed to positive and negative DC corona for 25 and 50 hours using a needle-plane electrode system. Hydrophobicity changes were monitored using a sessile drop contact angle measurement facility. The physical changes on the surface were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and surface roughness measurements. The effect of positive dc corona was found to be different from that of negative dc corona. Significant surface degradation and loss of hydrophobicity was found in the case of negative dc corona exposed samples. Significant improvement in the above mentioned properties were obtained by adding small quantities of nSIL into the SR matrix.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and boron nitride both possess novel properties, the former associated with microporosity and the latter with good mechanical properties. We have synthesized composites of the imidazolate based MOF, ZIF-8, and few-layer BN in order to see whether we can incorporate the properties of both these materials in the composites. The composites so prepared between BN nanosheets and ZIF-8 have compositions ZIF-1BN, ZIF-2BN, ZIF-3BN and similar to ZIF-4BN. The composites have been characterized by PXRD, TGA, XPS, electron microscopy, IR, Raman and solid state NMR spectroscopy. The composites possess good surface areas, the actual value decreasing only slightly with the increase in the BN content. The CO2 uptake remains nearly the same in the composites as in the parent ZIF-8. More importantly, the addition of BN markedly improves the mechanical properties of ZIF-8, a feature that is much desired in MOFs. Observation of microporous features along with improved mechanical properties in a MOF is indeed noteworthy. Such manipulation of properties can be profitably exploited in practical applications.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) uniformly decorated with nano-anatase TiO2 particles corresponding to different TiO2-CNT weight ratios (up to 90 % TiO2:10 % CNT) were prepared by employing sol-gel process. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, Raman, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Photoluminescence, BET surface area and diffuse reflectance measurements. The composites show visible light assisted photocatalytic property, for example, the 90 % TiO2-10 % CNT composite completely degrades Indigo Carmine dye within 1 h of exposure to visible light. Similarly, Orange G and Congo Red dyes were decomposed within 2 h under visible light irradiation. The excellent visible light photocatalytic property of the composite is attributed to the synergetic effect of photoexcitation and photosensitization. This is due to the special nanoarchitecture wherein TiO2 nanoparticles are anchored to CNT surface that provides high specific interfacial area for photon absorption and electron trapping. Inhibition of electron-hole pair recombination is the most desirable solution for stimulating photocatalytic activity in semiconductor nanostructures. To implement this, herein we study the photocatalytic efficiency of elemental Au, Pd and bimetallic AuPd nanoalloy decorated pristine and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybridized ZnO nanorods for degrading rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye. Fabrication of Au, Pd and AuPd nanoalloy on pristine and RGO modified ZnO nanorods is simple and more importantly surfactant or polymer free. AuPd nanoalloyed ZnO-RGO nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic activity for degrading dye than both Au and Pd hybridized ones, indicating the promising potential of bimetallic nanoalloys over elemental components. A non-monotonic dependence on the composite composition was found by analyzing photodegradation efficiency of a series of ZnO-RGO-AuPd hybrid nanostructures with different weight percentages of RGO. The hybrid nanostructure ZnO-RGO (5 wt%)-AuPd (1 wt%) exhibits highest photodegradation efficiency (similar to 100% degradation in 20 min) with an improvement in rate constant (k) by a factor of 10 compared to that of the ZnO-RGO nanocomposite. The enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is attributed to the better separation of photogenerated charge carriers in photocatalysts thereby suggesting possible usefulness in a broad range of applications, such as sensing, photocatalysis and solar energy conversion.

In this study, two different types of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) namely pristine (p-MWNTs) and amine functionalized (a-MWNTs) were melt-mixed with polycaprolactone (PCL) to develop biodegradable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. The bulk electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was assessed using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and the structural properties were evaluated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Both the electrical conductivity and the structural properties improved after the addition of MWNTs and were observed to be proportional to the increasing fractions in the nanocomposites. The shielding effectiveness of the nanocomposites was studied using a vector network analyzer (VNA) in a broad range of frequencies, X-band (8 to 12 GHz) and K-u-band (12 to 18 GHz) on toroidal samples. The shielding effectiveness significantly improved on addition of MWNTs, more in the case of p-MWNTs than in a-MWNTs. For instance, at a given fraction of MWNTs (3 wt%), PCL with p-MWNTs and a-MWNTs showed a shielding effectiveness of -32 dB and -29 dB, respectively. Moreover, it was observed that reflection was the primary mechanism of shielding at lower fractions of MWNTs, while absorption dominated at higher fractions in the composites. As one of the rationales of this work was to develop biodegradable EMI shielding materials to address the challenges concerning electronic waste, the effect of different MWNTs on the biodegradability of PCL composites was assessed through enzymatic degradation. The enzymatic degradation of the samples cut from the hot pressed films by bacterial lipase was investigated. It was noted that a-MWNTs exhibited almost similar degradation rate as the control PCL sample; however, p-MWNTs showed a slower degradation rate. This study demonstrates the potential use of PCL-MWNT composites as flexible, light weight and eco-friendly EMI shielding materials.
