The electron self-exchange rates (k(ex)) of viologen and its derivatives are estimated by using microelectrode voltammetry in poly(ethylene glycol) films. The dependences of supporting electrolyte concentration and sizes of viologen and its derivatives on k(ex) and diffusion coefficients (D) are discussed. Results show that k(ex) increases with the decrease of supporting electrolyte concentration and sizes of reactants. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

After isothermal crystallization, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) showed double endothermic behavior in the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) heating scan. During the heating scans of semicrystalline PET, a metastable melt which comes from melting thinner lamellar crystal populations formed between the low and the upper endothermic temperatures. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the low melting temperature and form thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and perfection depends on the crystallization time and crystallization temperature. The crystallization kinetics of this metastable melt can be determined by means of DSC. The kinetics analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PET melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 similar to 1.2, probably reflecting one-dimensional or irregular line growth of the crystal occurring between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation. This is in agreement with the hypothesis that the melting peaks are associated with two distinct crystal populations with different thicknesses. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Tensile properties of poly (P-hydroxybutyrate)/poly (ethylene oxide) (PHB/PEO) blends were reported in this paper. It was found that the blends of PHB with different molecular-weight PEO exhibited different mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the blends of PHB and PEO3 (M-w=0.3x10(6)) were very poor. However, the blends of PHB and PEO5 (M-w=5x10(6)) showed compatible in mechanical properties. Excellent synergism was observed not only in tensile stress and tensile elongation but also in modulus. Moreover, the ductility of the blends could be improved further under proper heat-treatment.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and polarizing microscopy (POM). It is found that the miscibility is related to the composition of the blends. When the PEO content is over 20 percent, the miscible blends turn into partially miscible and the phase separation can be observed with POM. The addition of the PEO influences not only the morphology of PHB crystals and the radial growth rate of spherulites, but also the cold crystallization temperature.

In-situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemical technique(MFTIRs) was applied to studying the electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid(AA) in poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) paste at a 100 mu m diameter Pt disk electrode. Using this technique, the catalytic ability of cobalt hexacyanoferrate(CoHCF) microcrystalline toward AA oxidation was also studied, it was found that the dispersed CoHCF powder in the PEG paste can generate well-shaped thin-layer cyclic voltammetric waves with the peak height proportional to the scan rate, corresponding to the Fe centered redox reactions. This oxidation step catalyzed the AA oxidation. Also, this pasted CoHCF powder generated well-resolved in-situ MFTIRs spectra, by which a chemical interaction between C = C bond of AA ring and CoHCF lattice was revealed. A corresponding surface docking mechanism for the catalytic reaction has been proposed.

Using a graft modification method, a comblike polymer host (CBPE550) was synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGMA) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer (EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The product was characterized by IR and elementary analysis. Result showed that the product was amorphous and semi-ester product is accord with reaction equation. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log a against 1/(T - T-0) shows a dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T beta. The comblike polymer is a white rubbery solid. It can be well-dissolved in acetone. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) of dimethylferrocene (DMFc) was estimated using cyclic voltammetric peak potential separations taken typically in a mixed diffusion geometry regime in a polyelectrolyte, and the diffusion coefficient (D) of DMFc was obtained using a steady-state voltammogram. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant and diffusion coefficient are both smaller by about 100-fold in the polymeric solvent than in the monomeric solvent. The results are in agreement with the difference of longitudinal dielectric relaxation time (tau(L)) in the two kinds of solvents, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and CH3CN, indicating that k(s) varies inversely with tau(L); k(s), is proportional to D of DMFc. Both D and k(s) of DMFc in PEG containing different supporting electrolytes and at different temperatures have been estimated. These results show that D and k(s) of DMFc increase with increasing temperature in the polyelectrolyte, whereas they vary only slightly with changing the supporting electrolyte.

The compatibilization effect of poly(styrene-b-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-EOx), on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) is examined in terms of phase structure and thermal, rheological and mechanical properties, and its compatibilizing mechanism is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The block copolymer, synthesized by a mechanism transformation copolymerization, is used in solution blending of PPO/EAA. Scanning electron micrographs show that the blends exhibit a more regular and finer dispersion on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). Thermal analysis indicates that the grass transition of PPO and the lower endothermic peal; of EAA components become closer on adding P(S-b-EOx), and the added diblock copolymer is mainly located at the interface between the PPO and EAA phases. The interfacial tension estimated by theological measurement is significantly reduced on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). The tensile strength and elongation at break increase with the addition of the diblock copolymer for PPO-rich blends, whereas the tensile strength increases but the elongation at break decreases for EAA-rich blends. This effect is interpreted in terms of interfacial activity and the reinforcing effect of the diblock copolymer, and it is concluded that the diblock copolymer plays a role as an effective compatibilizer for PPO/EAA blends. The specific interaction between EAA and polar parts of P(S-b-EOx) is mainly hydrogen bonding. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(butyl acrylate) synthesized by radical polymerization in a one-step procedure were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, infrared, IH-NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystalline property, emulsifying property, and phase transfer catalytic effect in the Williamson reaction were studied. It was found that the crystallinity of the copolymer increased with an increase in both the content and molecular weight of poly( ethylene oxide) (PEO) sequences. DSC curves showed two distinct crystallization temperature due to the heterogeneous nucleation and homogeneous nucleation crystallization. The casting solvent significantly affected the morphology and crystallinity of the solvent cast films. Both the emulsifying volume and the phase transfer catalytic efficiency in the Williamson reaction increased with the amount and PEO content of the block copolymers used, but decreased with an increase in the molecular weight of PEO sequences. Flory solution theory modified by Hamada et al. (Macromolecules, 1980, 13, 729) was used to predict the miscibility of blends of poly(ethylene oxide) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO-aPMMA) and with poly(vinyl acetate) (PEO-PVAc). Interaction parameters of a PEO-aPMMA blend with the weight ratio of PEO/aPMMA = 50/50 at the temperature range of 393-433 K and PEO-PVAc blends with different compositions and temperatures were calculated from the determined equation-of-state parameters based on Flory solution theory modified by Hamada ed al. Results show that interaction parameters of the PEO-aPMMA blend are negative and can be comparable with values obtained from neutron-scattering measurements by Ito et al. (Macromolecules, 1987, 20, 2213). Also, interaction parameters and excess volumes of PEO-PVAc blends are negative and increase with enhancing the content of PEO and the temperature. During heating of semicrystalline PET, a metastable melt forms far below the equilibrium melting temperature. Crystallization kinetics of this metastable melt is discussed on the basis of DSC results. From the metastable melt almost one-dimensional growth of the crystal occurs through heterogeneous nucleation.

Hybrid materials incorporating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) via a sol-gel process were studied for a wide range of compositions of PEG by DSC and high resolution solid-state C-13- and Si-29-NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the microstructure of the hybrid materials and the crystallization behavior of PEG in hybrids strongly depend on the relative content of PEG. With an increasing content of PEG, the microstructure of hybrid materials changes a lot, from intimate mixing to macrophase separation. It is found that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) (around 373 K) of PEG homogeneously embedded in a silica network are much higher than that (about 223 K) of pure PEG and also much higher in melting temperatures T-m (around 323 K) than PEG crystallites in heterogeneous hybrids. Meanwhile, the lower the PEG content, the more perfect the silica network, and the higher the T-g of PEG embedded in hybrids. An extended-chain structure of PEG was supposed to be responsible for the unusually high T-g of PEG. Homogeneous PEG-TEOS hybrids on a molecular level can be obtained provided that the PEG. content in the hybrids is less than 30% by weight. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new blend of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was prepared. The results from solid-state NMR indicate that the PHEMA/PEG(88:12, w/w) blend is miscible on a molecular level.

Prepolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (Pre-PEG) were synthesized by reacting azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and their structures were characterized by IR and UV. The molecular weight of pre-PEG was related to the feed ratio and reaction time. These prepolymers can be used to prepare block copolymers - poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(butyl acrylate) (PEO-b-PBA) by radical polymerization in the presence of butyl acrylate (BA). Solution polymerization was a suitable technique for this step. The yield and the molecular weight of the product were related to the ratio of the prepolymer to BA, the reaction time, and temperature. GPC showed that the molecular weight increased with a higher ratio of BA to pre-PEO. The intrinsic viscosity of the copolymers was only slightly dependent on reaction time, but decreased at higher reaction temperatures, as did the amount of PEA homopolymer.
