Coordination self-assembly of a series of tetranuclear Pt(II) macrocycles containing an organometallic backbone incorporating ethynyl functionality is presented. The 1 : 1 combination of a linear acceptor 1,4-bistrans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)(ethynyl)]benzene (1) with three different dipyridyl donor `clips' (L-a-L-c) afforded three 2 + 2] self-assembled Pt-4(II) macrocycles (2a-2c) in quantitative yields, respectively L-a = 1,3-bis-(3-pyridyl)isothalamide; L-b = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)ethynylbenzene; L-c = 1,8-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylanthracene]. These macrocycles were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1 and P-31); ESI-MS spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 2a and 2b were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These macrocycles (2a-2c) are fluorescent in nature. The amide functionalized macrocycle 2a is used as a receptor to check the binding affinity of aliphatic acyclic dicarboxylic acids. Such binding affinity is examined using fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. A solution state fluorescence study showed that macrocycle 2a selectively binds (K-SV = 1.4 x 10(4) M-1) maleic acid by subsequent enhancement in emission intensity. Other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as fumaric, succinic, adipic, mesaconic and itaconic acids caused no change in the emission spectra; thereby demonstrating its potential use as a macrocyclic receptor in distinction of maleic acid from other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids.

A benzil-based semi-rigid dinuclear organometallic acceptor 4,4'-bistrans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)(ethynyl)]benzil (bisPt-NO3) containing a Pt-ethynyl functionality was synthesized in good yield and characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1, P-31, and C-13), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the iodide analogue bisPt-I. The stoichiometric (1:1) combination of the acceptor bisPt-NO3 separately with four different ditopic donors (L-1-L-4; L-1 = 9-ethyl-3,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-9H-carbazole, L-2 = 1,4-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, L-3 = 1,3-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene and L-4 = 9,10-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl) methyl)anthracene) yielded four 2 + 2] self-assembled metallacycles M-1-M-4 in quantitative yields, respectively. All these newly synthesized assemblies were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, ESI-MS) and their sizes/shapes were predicted through geometry optimization employing the PM6 semi-empirical method. The benzil moiety was introduced in the backbone of the acceptor bisPt-NO3 due to the interesting structural feature of long carbonyl C-C bond (similar to 1.54 angstrom), which enabled us to probe the role of conformational flexibility on size and shapes of the resulting coordination ensembles.

FSodium phosphate tellurite glasses in the system (NaPO3)(x)(TeO2)(1-x) were prepared and structurally characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a variety of complementary solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Unlike the situation in other mixed-network-former glasses, the interaction between the two network formers tellurium oxide and phosphorus oxide produces no new structural units, and no sharing of the network modifier Na2O takes place. The glass structure can be regarded as a network of interlinked metaphosphate-type P(2) tetrahedral and TeO4/2 antiprismotic units. The combined interpretation of the O 1s XPS data and the P-31 solid-state NMR spectra presents clear quantitative evidence for a nonstatistical connectivity distribution. Rather the formation of homootomic P-O-P and Te-O-Te linkages is favored over mixed P-O-Te connectivities. As a consequence of this chemical segregation effect, the spatial sodium distribution is not random, as also indicated by a detailed analysis of P-31/No-23 rotational echo double-resonance (REDOR) experiments. Two organically templated trivalent metal-containing crystalline zirconium phosphate materials FeZrPO-8 and AlZrPO-8 have been prepared hydrothermally by using fluoride as a mineralizer, and 1,6-diaminohexane (DAH) as templates. The powder XRD patterns indicate that the as-synthesized products are new materials. Substitutions of Al3+ or Fe3+ into Zr4+ sites were confirmed by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies. The thermal behavior of the title compounds have been investigated using TG-DTA and X-ray thermodiffractometry, which indicated that the inorganic framework of the compounds are thermally stable up to similar to400 degreesC. A series of heteropolyphosphatotungstate catalysts with different W/P ratio were prepared by different means. P-31 MAS NMR spectra show every heteropolyphosphatotungstate contains several species with different W/P ratio. Combined with propylene epoxidation results, it is shown that the band at chemical shift ca. delta = 5 ppm maybe corresponds to a catalyst precursor which can be the most efficiently converted to the structure {PO4 [WO(O-2)(2)](4)}(3-). Characterization results of ICP show, the catalysts with low W/P ratio show a good reactivity for propylene epoxidation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The acid sites in dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolite with crystal sizes down to the nanoscale were firstly characterized by the probe molecule trimethylphosphine (TMP). As evidenced by the combination of P-31 CP/MAS NMR, Al-27 MAS and H-1 --> Al-27 CP/MAS NMR measurements, the Bronsted acid sites of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 could be decreased upon the dealumination of zeolitic framework after hydrothermal treatment. At the same time, the appearance of Lewis acid sites was observed. The dealuminated nanosized HZSM-5 is easier to form Lewis acid sites than microsized HZSM-5, and the type of Lewis acid sites in nanosized HSM-5 is more than one. In addition, the origin of Lewis acid sites is mainly associated with the aluminum at ca. 30 ppm, in the Al-27 MAS NMR spectra, and only a part of which in the dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolite acts as Lewis acid sites. New types of templates and novel interactive mechanisms between template and framework are very important for creating porous materials. In this work, by using neutral dibutyl methylphosphonate as a template, an inorganic-organic hybrid mesoporous material, aluminum methylphosphonate, was prepared. The as-synthesized material was studied by P-31 magnetic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), Al-27 MAS NMR, C-13 CP/MAS, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and transmission electron microscopy. After thermal treatment at 673 K and 10 mmHg for 2 h, hybrid mesoporous foam was obtained. The transformation process was investigated by FT-IR. TG-DTA results indicate that the methyl group bonded to the framework keeps intact up to 792 K under air and 823 K under nitrogen. The characterization results from nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption measurements show that the BET surface area and the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda desorption cumulative pore volume of the foam are 90 m(2) g(-1) and 0.32 cm(3) g(-1) respectively. A novel method of grafting ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (LLA) onto the surface of hydroxyapatite nano-particles (n-HAP) was developed. PLLA was directly connected onto the HAP surface through a chemical linkage. The PLLA-g-HAP particles could be stably dispersed in organic solvent such as chloroform for several weeks. The n-HAP particles still retained the original dimension and shape after the grafting of PLLA. Compared with the P-31 MAS-NMR spectrum of pure HAP powders, there appeared a downfield displacement of 1.2 ppm in the spectrum of PLLA-g-HAP. Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectra further confirmed the existence of PLLA on the surface of PLLA-g-HAP. The amount of grafted polymer determined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was about 6% in weight. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLLA/PLLA-g-HAP composite containing 8 wt% of PLLA-g-HAP were 55 MPa and about 10-13%, respectively, while those of the PLLA/n-HAP composites were 40 MPa and 3-5%, respectively.

The reaction of [Cp*RhCl2](2) 1 with dilithium 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-1,2-dithiolate (a) and -diselenolate (b) afforded the 16-electron rhodium(III) half-sandwich complexes Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] [E=S (3a), Se (3b)]. The 18-electron trimethylphosphane rhodium(III) half-sandwiches Cp*Rh(PMe3)[E2C2(B10H10)] 4a-c were prepared from the reaction of Cp*RhCl2(PMe3) 2 with the same dichalcogenolates, including the ditelluride (c). The complexes 4a,b could also be obtained from the reaction of 3a,b with trimethylphosphane. The molecular geometry of 4b was determined by X-ray structural analysis. The 16-electron complexes 3 an monomeric in solution as shown by multinuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-, B-11-, C-13-, P-31- Se-77-, Rh-103-, Te-125-NMR). also in comparison with the data for the trimethylphosphane analogues 4a-c and for 6a in which the rhodium bears the eta(5)-1,3-C5H3 Bu-t(2) ligand. The Rh-103 nuclear shielding is reduced by 831 ppm (3a) and 1114 ppm (3b) with respect to the 18-electron complexes 4a,b. Similarly, the Se-77 nuclear shielding in 3b is reduced by 676.4 ppm with respect to that in 4b. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The interaction of [(C(5)H(4)R)(2)NdCl.2LiCl] (R = H, Bu(t)) with one equivalent of Li[(CH2)(CH2)PPh(2)] in refluxing tetrahydrofuran gave the purplish-blue complex [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] in 50% yield. The compounds have been fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectroscopy indicated the existence of the following equilibrium: [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] + THF reversible arrow (C(5)H(4)R)(3)Nd(THF) + CH2=P(Me)Ph(2). At room temperature, the exchange between the coordinated and free ylide ligand is slow on the NMR time scale.

Porous layered hybrid materials have been prepared by the reaction of organo-bisphosphonate ligands, 4-(4'-phosphonophenoxy)phenylphosphonic, 4,4'-biphenylenbisphosphonic and phenylphosphonic acids, with metal(IV) cations (Zr and Sn). Crystalline Zr(IV) and Sn(IV) layered bisphosphonates were also prepared, which were non-porous. The amorphous M(IV) bisphosphonates showed variable compositions and textural properties ranging from mainly mesoporous to highly microporous solids with BET surface areas varying from 300 to 480 m(2) g(-1), micropore volumes ranging 0.10-0.20 cm(3)/g, and narrow porous size distributions for some materials. N-2 isotherms suggest that Sn(IV) derivatives show a comparatively higher micropore contribution than the Zr(IV) analogous at least for the ether-bisphosphonate hybrids. Sn(IV) bisphosphonates exhibit high microporosities without the need of using harmful DMSO as solvent. If ether-bisphosphonic acid is partially replaced by less expensive phenylphosphonic ligand, porous products are also obtained. P-31 and F-17 MAS NMR and XPS data revealed the presence of hydrogen-phosphonate groups and small (F-, Cl- and OH-) anions, which act as spacer ligands within the inorganic layers, in these hybrid materials. The complexity of the inorganic layers is higher for the Sn(IV) bisphosphonates likely due to the larger amount of small bridging anions including fluorides. It is suggested that the presence of these small inorganic ligands may be a key factor influencing both, the interaction of the inorganic layer with the bisphosphonate groups, which bridge the inorganic layers, and the generation of internal voids within a given inorganic layer. Preliminary studies of gases adsorption (H-2 and NO) have been carried out for selected Sn(IV) bisphosphonates. The H-2 adsorption capacity at 77 K and 1 bar was low, 0.26 wt%, but the NO adsorption capacity at similar to 1 bar and 298 K was relatively high, 4.2 wt%. Moreover, the hysteresis in the NO isotherms is indicative of partial strong irreversible adsorption of NO. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
