Hole 633A was drilled in the southern part of Exuma Sound on the toe-of-slope of the southeastern part of Great Bahama Bank during ODP Leg 101. The top 55 m, collected as a suite of six approximately 9.5-m-long hydraulic piston cores, represents a Pliocene-Pleistocene sequence of periplatform carbonate ooze, a mixture of pelagic calcite (foraminifer and coccolith tests), some pelagic aragonite (pteropod tests), and bank-derived fine aragonite and magnesian calcite. A 1.6-m.y.-long hiatus was identified at 43.75 mbsf using calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. The 43.75-m-thick periplatform sequence above the hiatus is a complete late Pliocene-Quaternary record of the past 2.15 m.y. The d18O curve, primarily based on Globigerinoides sacculifera, clearly displays high-frequency/low-amplitude cycles during the early Pleistocene and low-frequency/high-amplitude cycles during the middle and late Pleistocene. Variations in aragonite content in the fine fraction of the periplatform ooze show a cyclic pattern throughout the Pleistocene, as previously observed in piston cores of the upper Pleistocene. These variations correlate well with the d18O record: high aragonite corresponds to light interglacial d18O values, and vice versa. Comparison of the d18O record and the aragonite curve helps to identify 23 interglacial and glacial oxygen-isotope stages, corresponding to 10.5 aragonite cycles (labeled A to K) commonly established during the middle and late Pleistocene (0.9 Ma-present). Strictly based on the aragonite curve, another 11 aragonite cycles, labeled L to V, were identified for the early Pleistocene (0.9 to 1.6 Ma). Mismatches between the d18O record and the aragonite curve occur mainly at some of the glacial-to-interglacial transitions, where aragonite increases usually lag behind d18O depletion. When one visually connects the minima on the Pleistocene aragonite curve, low-frequency (0.4 to 0.5 m.y.) supercycles seem to be superimposed on the high-frequency cycles. The timing of this supercycle roughly matches the timing of the Pleistocene carbonate preservation supercycles described in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. Mismatches between aragonite and d18O cycles are even more obvious for the late Pliocene (1.6 to 2.15 Ma). Irregular aragonite variations are observed for the late Pliocene, although after the onset of late Pleistocene-like glaciations in the North Atlantic Ocean 2.4 m.y. ago the d18O record has shown a mode of high-frequency/low-amplitude cycles. Initiation of climatically induced aragonite cycles occurs only at the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, 1.6 m.y. ago. After that time, aragonite cycles are fully developed throughout the Quaternary. The 11-m-thick periplatform sequence below the hiatus represents a lower Pliocene interval between 3.75 and 4.45 Ma. The bottom half (4.25-4.45 Ma) has a fairly constant, high aragonite content (averaging 60%) and high sedimentation rates (28 m/m.y.) and corresponds to the end of the prolonged early Pliocene interglacial interval (4.1-5.0 Ma), established as a worldwide high sea-level stand. The second half (3.75-4.25 Ma), in which aragonite content decreases by successive steps, paralleled by a gradual 5180 enrichment in Globigerinoides sacculifera and low sedimentation rates (10 m/m.y), corresponds to the climatic deterioration established worldwide between 4.1 and 3.8 Ma, to a decrease of carbonate preservation observed in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, and to a global sea-level decline. Dolomite, a ubiquitous secondary component in the lower Pliocene, is interpreted as being authigenic and possibly related to diagenetic transformation of primary bank-derived fine magnesian calcite. Transformation of the primary mineralogical composition of the periplatform ooze was evidently minor, as the sediments have retained a detailed record of the Pliocene-Pleistocene climatic evolution. Clear evidence of diagenetic transformations in the periplatform ooze includes (1) the disappearance of magnesian calcite in the upper 20 m of Hole 633A, (2) the occurrence of calcite overgrowths on foraminiferal tests and microclasts at intermittent chalky core levels, and (3) the ubiquitous presence of authigenic dolomite in the lower Pliocene.

The antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 1 mM) and d-α-tocopherol (10 μM) completely attenuated protein degradation in murine myotubes in response to both proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF) and angiotensin II (Ang II), suggesting that the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in this process. Both PIF and Ang II induced a rapid and transient increase in ROS formation in myotubes, which followed a parabolic dose-response curve, similar to that for total protein degradation. Antioxidant treatment attenuated the increase in expression and activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway by PIF and Ang II, by preventing the activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), through inhibition of phosphorylation of the NF-κB inhibitor protein (I-κB) and its subsequent degradation. ROS formation by both PIF and Ang II was attenuated by diphenyleneiodonium (10 μM), suggesting that it was mediated through the NADPH oxidase system. ROS formation was also attenuated by trifluoroacetyl arachidonic acid (10 μM), a specific inhibitor of cytosolic phospholipase A2, U-73122 (5 μM) and D609 (200 μM), inhibitors of phospholipase C and calphostin C (300 nM), a highly specific inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), all known activators of NADPH oxidase. Myotubes containing a dominant-negative mutant of PKC did not show an increase in ROS formation in response to either PIF or Ang II. The two Rac1 inhibitors W56 (200 μM) and NSC23766 (10 μM) also attenuated both ROS formation and protein degradation induced by both PIF and Ang II. Rac1 is known to mediate signalling between the phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI-3K) product and NADPH oxidase, and treatment with LY24002 (10 μM), a highly selective inhibitor of PI-3K, completely attenuated ROS production in response to both PIF and Ang II, and inhibited total protein degradation, while the inactive analogue LY303511 (100 μM) had no effect. ROS formation appears to be important in muscle atrophy in cancer cachexia, since treatment of weight losing mice bearing the MAC16 tumour with d-α-tocopherol (1 mg kg- 1) attenuated protein degradation and increased protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The d18O values of interstitial waters from Site 994 and Site 997 sediments, Blake Ridge, western Atlantic, tend to decrease with depth from 0.3 per mil to -0.5 per mil Standard Mean Ocean Water in the upper 200 mbsf, then fluctuate with significant positive spikes of Delta = 0.2 per mil - 0.5 per mil in the gas hydrate zone (200 to 450 mbsf), and finally increase from -0.4 per mil to -0.2 per mil toward 700 mbsf. Positive shifts of d18O IW in the gas hydrate zone are probably caused by the dissociation of gas hydrates originally contained in sediment cores. Gas hydrates recovered from the sites are enriched in 18O, d18O ranging between 2.7 per mil and 3.5 per mil. d18O values of gas hydrates and ambient interstitial waters give an oxygen isotopic fractionation factor of 1.0034-1.0040 at 12°-16°C and ~31 MPa (3 km below sea level). Based on this fractionation and observed isotopic anomalies in the gas hydrate zone, gas hydrates occupy 6% to 12% of pore-space volume within Blake Ridge sediments.

Site 723 is located in a water depth of 808 m at the center of the oxygen minimum zone and the middle part of the main thermocline on the Oman Margin. Oxygen isotope curves of planktonic delta18OP and benthic delta18OB can be traced back continuously to Stage 23 with high resolution measurements. A tentative correlation to Stage 53 has been tried using oxygen isotope stratigraphy. The amplitudes of the fluctuations of the benthic delta18OB curve are small, compared with the planktonic delta18OP curve. The delays of benthic oxygen isotopes delta18OB related to the planktonic delta18OP appear in the transgressive stages. Carbon isotopes of benthic delta13CB and planktonic delta13CP generally show an inverse correlation with oxygen isotope values delta18OB and delta18OB and delta18OP, however, the changes of delta13C are more gradual than those of delta18O during transgressive stages in spite of the synchronized changes of delta13C with those of delta18O during regressive stages. The difference of oxygen isotope between benthic and planktonic foraminifers represents the degree of pushing up the thermocline by upwelling, and the difference of carbon isotope represents the relative amount of upwelling Sigma[CO2] to the biological uptake in the surface water. These isotopic differences can be used as indicators of upwelling and show strong upwelling in the interglacial and weak upwelling in the glacial stages. The organic carbon content is correlated with the isotopic upwelling indicators, and higher content is correlated with the isotopic upwelling indicators and higher content appears in the interglacial stages. The calculated rate of sedimentation based on oxygen isotope stratigraphy in glacial stages is significantly high, two to four times that of interglacial stages, and the absolute flux of fluvial sediments with variability of lithofacies increased in the glacial stage. The present glacial-interglacial cycle with the fluctuation of upwelling relating to the southwest monsoon can be traced back to Stage 8, 250 ka. From Stage 8 to 12, 250-450 ka, the upwelling indicator of oxygen isotope difference did not show such distinct cyclicity. For Stages 12-15, 450-600 ka, the upwelling can be estimated as strong as in interglacial stage of the present cycles, with slightly weak upwelling in the glacial stage. This upwelling and climate can be traced back to the late Pliocene. The strongest upwelling can be estimated in the Pliocene-Pleistocene time by the isotopic indicators and the high organic carbon content.

Chemical Stratigraphy, or the study of the variation of chemical elements within sedimentary sequences, has gradually become an experienced tool in the research and correlation of global geologic events. In this paper 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios of the Triassic marine carbonates (Muschelkalk facies) of southeast Iberian Ranges, Iberian Peninsula, are presented and the representative Sr-isotopic curve constructed for the upper Ladinian interval. The studied stratigraphic succession is 102 meters thick, continuous, and well preserved. Previous paleontological data from macro and micro, ammonites, bivalves, foraminifera, conodonts and palynological assemblages, suggest a Fassanian-Longobardian age (Late Ladinian). Although diagenetic minerals are present in small amounts, the elemental data content of bulk carbonate samples, especially Sr contents, show a major variation that probably reflects palaeoenvironmental changes. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios curve shows a rise from 0.707649 near the base of the section to 0.707741 and then declines rapidly to 0.707624, with a final values rise up to 0.70787 in the upper part. The data up to meter 80 in the studied succession is broadly concurrent with 87Sr/86Sr ratios of sequences of similar age and complements these data. Moreover, the sequence stratigraphic framework and its key surfaces, which are difficult to be recognised just based in the facies analysis, are characterised by combining variations of the Ca, Mg, Mn, Sr and CaCO3 contents

This paper aims to provide aperture corrections for emission lines in a sample of spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey (CALIFA) database. In particular, we explore the behavior of the log([O III] λ5007/Hβ)/([N II] λ6583/Hα) (O3N2) and log[N II] lambda 6583/Hα (N2) flux ratios since they are closely connected to different empirical calibrations of the oxygen abundances in star-forming galaxies. We compute the median growth curves of Hα, Hα/Hβ, O3N2, and N-2 up to 2.5R(50) and 1.5 disk R-eff. These distances cover most of the optical spatial extent of the CALIFA galaxies. The growth curves simulate the effect of observing galaxies through apertures of varying radii. We split these growth curves by morphological types and stellar masses to check if there is any dependence on these properties. The median growth curve of the Hα flux shows a monotonous increase with radius with no strong dependence on galaxy inclination, morphological type, and stellar mass. The median growth curve of the Hα/HβH ratio monotonically decreases from the center toward larger radii, showing for small apertures a maximum value of ≈10% larger than the integrated one. It does not show any dependence on inclination, morphological type, and stellar mass. The median growth curve of N-2 shows a similar behavior, decreasing from the center toward larger radii. No strong dependence is seen on the inclination, morphological type, and stellar mass. Finally, the median growth curve of O3N2 increases monotonically with radius, and it does not show dependence on the inclination. However, at small radii it shows systematically higher values for galaxies of earlier morphological types and for high stellar mass galaxies. Applying our aperture corrections to a sample of galaxies from the SDSS survey at 0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.3 shows that the average difference between fiber-based and aperture-corrected oxygen abundances, for different galaxy stellar mass and redshift ranges, reaches typically to ≈11%, depending on the abundance calibration used. This average difference is found to be systematically biased, though still within the typical uncertainties of oxygen abundances derived from empirical calibrations. Caution must be exercised when using observations of galaxies for small radii (e.g., below 0.5 R_eff) given the high dispersion shown around the median growth curves. Thus, the application of these median aperture corrections to derive abundances for individual galaxies is not recommended when their fluxes come from radii much smaller than either R_50 or R_eff.

Lutein (LT) is a carotenoid obtained by diet and despite its antioxidant activity had been biochemically reported, few studies are available concerning its influence on the expression of antioxidant genes. The expression of 84 genes implicated in antioxidant defense was quantified using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction array. DNA damage was measured by comet assay and glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were quantified as biochemical parameters of oxidative stress in mouse kidney and liver. cDDP treatment reduced concentration of GSH and increased TBARS, parameters that were ameliorated in treatment associated with LT. cDDP altered the expression of 32 genes, increasing the expression of GPx2, APC, Nqo1 and CCs. LT changed the expression of 37 genes with an induction of 13 mainly oxygen transporters. In treatments associating cDDP and LT, 30 genes had their expression changed with a increase of the same genes of the cDDP treatment alone. These results suggest that LT might act scavenging reactive species and also inducing the expression of genes related to a better antioxidant response, highlighting the improvement of oxygen transport. This improved redox state of the cell through LT treatment could be related to the antigenotoxic and antioxidant effects observed.
