Oxidation of the macrocyclic Cr(III) complex cis-[Cr(cycb)(OH)(2)](+), where cycb = rac-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, by an excess of the hexacyanoferrate( III) in basic solution, slowly produces Cr(V) species. These species, detected using e.p.r. spectroscopy, are stable under ambient conditions for many hours, and the hyperfine structure of the e.p.r. spectrum is consistent with the interaction of the d-electron with four equivalent nitrogen nuclei. Electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry suggests a concomitant oxidation of the macrocyclic ligand, in which double bonds and double bonded oxygen atoms have been introduced. By comparison basic chromate(III) solutions are oxidized rapidly to chromate(VI) by hexacyanoferrate(III) without any detectable generation of stable Cr(V) intermediates.

The kinetics of a fast leuco-Methylene Blue (LMB) re-oxidation to Methylene Blue (MB) by copper(II)-halide (Cl-, Br-) complexes in acidic aqueous media has been studied spectrophotometrically using a stopped-flow technique. The reaction follows a simple first order rate expression under an excess of the copper(II) species (and H+(aq)), and the pseudo-first order rate constant (k'(obs)) is largely independent of the atmosphere used (air, oxygen, argon). The rate law, at constant Cl- (Br-) anion concentration, is given by the expression: (d[MB+])/dt = ((k(a)K[H+] + k(b))/(1 + K[H+])).[Cu-II][LMB] = k'(obs)[LMB], where K is the protonation constant, and k(a) and k(b) are the pseudo-second order rate constants for protonated and deprotonated forms of LMB, respectively The rate law was determined based on the observed k'(obs) vs. [Cu-II] and [H+] dependences. The rate dramatically increases with [Cl-] over the range: 0.1-1.5 M, reflecting the following reactivity order: Cu2+(aq)

The initial rate of oxidation of octan-2-ol and other secondary alcohols to their ketones with NaBrO3, mediated by RuO4 in an aqueous-CCl4 biphasic system, is greater with ultrasonic irradiation than by stirring alone. Under ultrasonic irradiation the initial rate of oxidation of octan-2-ol increases with increasing % duty cycle, [RuO4] and [NaBrO3]. The kinetics of alcohol oxidation appear to be closely linked with the oxidative dissolution of RuO2 to RuO4 by NaBrO3. The observed enhancement in rate with ultrasonic irradiation appear to be association, at least in part, with the increase in interfacial surface area via the formation of an emulsion of aqueous microdroplets containing NaBrO3 in the CCl4 layer containing the non-water-soluble secondary alcohol.

The photocatalytic reactor described in the NOx removal ISO 22197-1:2007 is used to study the kinetics of the process, using a film of P25 TiO2 which has either been conventionally pre-irradiated in a stream of air, or unconventionally in a stream of NO (1 ppmv). In the former case it is shown that the system does not achieve steady state exit levels of NO, probably due to the gradual accumulation of HNO3 on the surface of the photocatalyst. The NO-preconditioned TiO2 film demonstrated excellent steady-state levels when monitored as a function of NO concentration, [NO] and UV irradiance, ρ. However, in this case the photocatalytic reaction under study is NOT NOx removal, but the conversion of NO to NO2. It is shown that the kinetics of this steady state process fit very well to a kinetic expression based on a disrupted adsorption reaction mechanism, which has also been used by others to fit their observed (non-steady state) kinetics for NOx removal on conventionally-(air) preconditioned films of P25. The appropriateness of this model for either system is questioned, since in both systems the kinetics appear to have a significant mass transport element. These findings suggest that mass transport and non-steady-state kinetics are likely to be significant features for most active photocatalytic samples, where the %NO conversion is >7%, and so limits the usefulness of the NOx removal ISO 22197-1:2007.

The kinetics of the reactions of 1-and 2-butoxy radicals have been studied using a slow-flow photochemical reactor with GC-FID detection of reactants and products. Branching ratios between decomposition, CH3CH(O-.)CH2CH3 CH3CHO + C2H5, reaction (7), and reaction with oxygen, CH3CH(O-.)CH2CH3 + O-2 -> CH3C(O)C2H5 + HO2, reaction (6), for the 2-butoxy radical and between isomerization, CH3CH2CH2CH2O. -> CH2CH2CH2CH2OH, reaction (9), and reaction with oxygen, CH3CH2CH2CH2O. + O-2 -> C3H7CHO + HO2, reaction (8), for the 1-butoxy radical were measured as a function of oxygen concentration at atmospheric pressure over the temperature range 250-318 K. Evidence for the formation of a small fraction of chemically activated alkoxy radicals generated from the photolysis of alkyl nitrite precursors and from the exothermic reaction of 2-butyl peroxy radicals with NO was observed. The temperature dependence of the rate constant ratios for a thermalized system is given by k(7)/k(6) = 5.4 x 1026 exp[(-47.4 +/- 2.8 kJ mol(-1))/RT] molecule cm(-3) and k(9)/k(8) = 1.98 x 10(23) exp[(-22.6 +/- 3.9 kJ mol(-1))/RT] molecule cm(-3). The results agree well with the available experimental literature data at ambient temperature but the temperature dependence of the rate constant ratios is weaker than in current recommendations.

Two vanadium(V) complexes, [VO(L-1)]acac)] (1) and [VO(L-2)(acac)] (2), where H2L1 = N,N-bis(2-hydroxy-3-5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)propylamine and H2L2 = 2,2'-selenobis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, V-51 NMR, both in the solid and in solution, and cyclic voltammetric studies. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that in complex 1 the vanadium atom is octahedrally coordinated with an O5N donor environment, where the oxygen atom of the V-V=O moiety and the N atom of the ONO ligand occupy the axial sites while two oxygen atoms (O1 and O2) from the bisphenolate ligand and two oxygen atoms (O3 and O4) from the acac ligand occupy the equatorial plane. A similar bonding pattern has also been encountered for 2 with the exception that a Se atom instead of N is involved in weak bonding to the metal center. Both complexes showed reversible cyclic voltammeric responses and E-1/2 appears at -0.18 and 0.10 V versus NHE for complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The kinetics of oxidation of ascorbic acid by complex 1 were carried out in 50% MeCN-50% HO (v/v) at 25 degrees C. The high formation constant value, Q = 63 +/- 7 M-1, reveals that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of a H-bonded intermediate. The low k(2)Q(2)/k(1)Q(1) ratio (13.4) for 1 points out that there is extensive H-bonding between the oxygen atom of the V-V=O group and the OH group of ascorbic acid. Drug resistance and virulence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are partially related to the pathogen`s antioxidant systems. Peroxide detoxification in this bacterium is achieved by the heme-containing catalase peroxidase and different two-cysteine peroxiredoxins. M. tuberculosis genome also codifies for a putative one-cysteine peroxiredoxin, alkyl hydroperoxide reductase E (MtAhpE). Its expression was previously demonstrated at a transcriptional level, and the crystallographic structure of the recombinant protein was resolved under reduced and oxidized states. Herein, we report that the conformation of MtAhpE changed depending on its single cysteine redox state, as reflected by different tryptophan fluorescence properties and changes in quaternary structure. Dynamics of fluorescence changes, complemented by competition kinetic assays, were used to perform protein functional studies. MtAhE reduced peroxynitrite 2 orders of magnitude faster than hydrogen peroxide (1.9 x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1) vs 8.2 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.4 and 25 degrees C, respectively). The latter also caused cysteine overoxidation to sulfinic acid, but at much slower rate constant (40 M(-1) s(-1)). The pK(a) of the thiol in the reduced enzyme was 5.2, more than one unit lower than that of the sulfenic acid in the oxidized enzyme. The pH profile of hydrogen peroxide-mediated thiol and sulfenic acid oxidations indicated thiolate and sulfenate as the reacting species. The formation of sulfenic acid as well as the catalytic peroxidase activity of MtAhpE was demonstrated using the artificial reducing substrate thionitrobenzoate. Taken together, our results indicate that MtAhpE is a relevant component in the antioxidant repertoire of M. tuberculosis probably involved in peroxide and specially peroxynitrite detoxification.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbate on a ruthenium oxide hexacyanoferrate (RuOHCF) glassy carbon (GC) modified electrode was investigated at pH 6.9 by using rotating disc electrode (RDE) voltammetry. The influence of the systematic variation of rotation rate, film thickness, ascorbate concentration and the electrode potential indicated that the rate of cross-chemical reaction between Ru(III) centres immobilized into the film and ascorbate controls the overall process. The kinetic regime may be classified as a Sk `` mechanism and the second order rate constant for the surface electrocatalytic reaction was found to be 1.56 x 10(-3) mol(-1) L-1 s(-1) cm. A carbon fibre microelectrode modified with the RuOHCF film was successfully used as an amperometric sensor to monitor the ascorbate diffusion in a simulated microenvironment experiment. We report a theoretical study of the multiple oxidation states (1+, 0, 1−, and 2−) of a meso,meso-linked diporphyrin, namely bis[10,15,20-triphenylporphyrinatozinc(II)-5-yl]butadiyne (4), using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT). The origin of electronic transitions of singlet excited states is discussed in comparison to experimental spectra for the corresponding oxidation states of the close analogue bis{10,15,20-tris[3‘,5‘-di-tert-butylphenyl]porphyrinatozinc(II)-5-yl}butadiyne (3). The latter were measured in previous work under in situ spectroelectrochemical conditions. Excitation energies and orbital compositions of the excited states were obtained for these large delocalized aromatic radicals, which are unique examples of organic mixed-valence systems. The radical cations and anions of butadiyne-bridged diporphyrins such as 3 display characteristic electronic absorption bands in the near-IR region, which have been successfully predicted with use of these computational methods. The radicals are clearly of the “fully delocalized” or Class III type. The key spectral features of the neutral and dianionic states were also reproduced, although due to the large size of these molecules, quantitative agreement of energies with observations is not as good in the blue end of the visible region. The TDDFT calculations are largely in accord with a previous empirical model for the spectra, which was based simplistically on one-electron transitions among the eight key frontier orbitals of the C4 (1,4-butadiyne) linked diporphyrins.

This study of photocatalytic oxidation of phenol over titanium dioxide films presents a method for the evaluation of true reaction kinetics. A flat plate reactor was designed for the specific purpose of investigating the influence of various reaction parameters, specifically photocatalytic film thickness, solution flow rate (1–8 l min−1), phenol concentration (20, 40 and 80 ppm), and irradiation intensity (70.6, 57.9, 37.1and 20.4 W m−2), in order to further understand their impact on the reaction kinetics. Special attention was given to the mass transfer phenomena and the influence of film thickness. The kinetics of phenol degradation were investigated with different irradiation levels and initial pollutant concentration. Photocatalytic degradation experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of mass transfer on the reaction and, in addition, the benzoic acid method was applied for the evaluation of mass transfer coefficient. For this study the reactor was modelled as a batch-recycle reactor. A system of equations that accounts for irradiation, mass transfer and reaction rate was developed to describe the photocatalytic process, to fit the experimental data and to obtain kinetic parameters. The rate of phenol photocatalytic oxidation was described by a Langmuir–Hinshelwood type law that included competitive adsorption and degradation of phenol and its by-products. The by-products were modelled through their additive effect on the solution total organic carbon.

The ability of the technique of large-amplitude Fourier transformed (FT) ac voltammetry to facilitate the quantitative evaluation of electrode processes involving electron transfer and catalytically coupled chemical reactions has been evaluated. Predictions derived on the basis of detailed simulations imply that the rate of electron transfer is crucial, as confirmed by studies on the ferrocenemethanol (FcMeOH)-mediated electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid. Thus, at glassy carbon, gold, and boron-doped diamond electrodes, the introduction of the coupled electrocatalytic reaction, while producing significantly enhanced dc currents, does not affect the ac harmonics. This outcome is as expected if the FcMeOH (0/+) process remains fully reversible in the presence of ascorbic acid. In contrast, the ac harmonic components available from FT-ac voltammetry are predicted to be highly sensitive to the homogeneous kinetics when an electrocatalytic reaction is coupled to a quasi-reversible electron-transfer process. The required quasi-reversible scenario is available at an indium tin oxide electrode. Consequently, reversible potential, heterogeneous charge-transfer rate constant, and charge-transfer coefficient values of 0.19 V vs Ag/AgCl, 0.006 cm s (-1) and 0.55, respectively, along with a second-order homogeneous chemical rate constant of 2500 M (-1) s (-1) for the rate-determining step in the catalytic reaction were determined by comparison of simulated responses and experimental voltammograms derived from the dc and first to fourth ac harmonic components generated at an indium tin oxide electrode. The theoretical concepts derived for large-amplitude FT ac voltammetry are believed to be applicable to a wide range of important solution-based mediated electrocatalytic reactions.
