Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Ti0.2O3-delta oxides were synthesized by a combined EDTA-citrate complexing method. The catalytic behavior of these two oxides with the perovskite structure was studied during the reaction of methane oxidation. The pre-treatment with methane has different effect on the catalytic activities of both the oxides. The methane pre-treatment has not resulted in the change of the catalytic activity of BSCFO owing to its excellent reversibility of the perovskite structure resulting from the excellent synergistic interaction between Co and Fe in the oxide. However, the substitution with Ti on Fe-site in the lattice makes the methane pre-treatment have an obvious influence on the activity of the formed BSCTO oxide.

A comprehensive study of the low-temperature oxidation of CO was conducted over Pd/TiO2, Pd/CeO2, and Pd/CeO2-TiO2 pretreated by a series of calcination and reduction processes. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, XRD, H-2 chemisorption, and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The results indicated that Pd/CeO2-TiO2 has the highest activity among these catalysts, whether in the calcined state or in the reduced state. The activity of all of the catalysts can be improved significantly by the pre-reduction, and it seems that the reduction at low temperature (LTR. 150 degrees C) is more effective than that at high temperature (HTR, 500 degrees C), especially for Pd/CeO2 and Pd/TiO2. The catalysts with various supports and pretreatments are also different in the reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation at low temperature. Over Pd/TiO2, the reaction may proceed through a surface reaction between the weakly adsorbed CO and oxygen (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). For Ce-containing catalysts, however, an alteration of reaction mechanism with temperature and the involvement of the oxygen activation at different sites were observed, and the light-off profiles of the calcined Pd/CeO2 and Pd/CeOi-TiO2 show a distortion before CO conversion achieves 100%. At low temperature, CO oxidation proceeds mainly via the reaction between the adsorbed CO on Pd-0 sites and the lattice oxygen of surface CeO2 at the Pd-Ce interface, whereas at high temperature it proceeds via the reaction between the adsorbed CO and oxygen. The high activity of Pd/CeO2-TiO2 for the low-temperature CO oxidation was probably due to the enhancements of both CO activation, caused by the facilitated reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0, and oxygen activation, through the improvement of the surface oxygen supply and the oxygen vacancies formation. The reduction pretreatment enhances metal-support interactions and oxygen vacancy formation and hence improves the activity of CO oxidation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Co3O4 nanocrystals with average particle sizes of 30 and 50 run were synthesized using cobalt nitrate as precursor, and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen was studied over Co3O4 nanocrystals. These catalysts showed obviously higher activities as compared to Co3O4 prepared by the conventional methods, Co3O4/Al2O3, or homogeneous cobalt catalyst under comparable reaction conditions. The 89.1% selectivity to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at 7.6% conversion of cyclohexane was realized over 50 nm sized Co3O4 nanocrystals at 393 K for 6 h. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. In situ IR measurements for CO adsorption and preferential CO oxidation in H-2-rich gases over Ag/SiO2 catalysts are presented in this paper. CO adsorbed on the Ag/SiO2 pretreated with oxygen shows a band centered around 2169 cm(-1), which is assigned to CO linearly bonded to Ag+ sites. The amount of adsorbed CO on the silver particles ( manifested by an IR band at 2169 cm(-1)) depends strongly on the CO partial pressure and the temperature. The steady-state coverage on the Ag surface is shown to be significantly below saturation, and the oxidation of CO with surface oxygen species is probably via a non-competitive Langmuir Hinshelwood mechanism on the silver catalyst which occurs in the high-rate branch on a surface covered with CO below saturation. A low reactant concentration on the Ag surface indicates that the reaction order with respect to Pco is positive, and the selectivity towards CO2 decreases with the decrease of Pco. On the other hand, the decrease of the selectivity with the reaction temperature also reflects the higher apparent activation energy for H-2 oxidation than that for CO oxidation.

Silver is well known to show peculiar catalytic activities in several oxidation reactions. In the present paper, we investigate the catalytic activity of silver catalysts toward CO-gelective oxidation in H-2. XRD, TEM, TPD, and in situ FTIR techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The pretreatment of the catalysts was found to have great influence on their performance. The pretreatment in 02 improves the activity of the silver catalyst, whereas He pretreatment at 700 degreesC or direct hydrogen pretreatment shows an inverse effect. Silver catalysts undergo massive structural change during oxygen pretreatment at high temperatures (> 500 degreesC), and there is solid evidence for the formation of subsurface oxygen species. The existence of this silver-subsurface oxygen structure facilitates the formation of active sites on silver catalysts for CO oxidation, which are related to the size, morphology, and exposed crystal planes of the silver particles. Its formation requires a certain temperature, and a higher pretreatment temperature with oxygen is required for the silver catalyst with a smaller particle size. It is observed, for the first time, that adsorbed CO on the surface of silver particles can directly react with subsurface oxygen species at low temperatures (e.g., RT), and the surface oxygen can migrate into and refill these subsurface sites after the consumption of subsurface oxygen by the reaction with CO. This finding provides a new reaction pathway for CO oxidation on silver catalyst. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier Inc.

We conducted the liquid phase oxidation of toluene with molecular oxygen over heterogeneous catalysts of copper-based binary metal oxides. Among the copper-based binary metal oxides, iron-copper binary oxide (Fe/Cu = 0.3 atomic ratio) was found to be the best catalyst. In the presence of pyridine, overoxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid was partially prevented. As a result, highly selective formation of benzaldehyde (86% selectivity) was observed after 2 h of reaction (7% conversion of toluene) at 463 K and 1.0 MPa of oxygen atmosphere in the presence of pyridine. These catalytic performances were similar or better than those in the gas phase oxidation of toluene at reaction temperatures higher than 473 K and under 0.5-2.5 MPa. It was suggested from competitive adsorption measurements that pyridine could reduce the adsorption of benzaldehyde. At a long reaction time of 4 It, the conversion increased to 25% and benzoic acid became the predominant reaction product (72% selectivity) in the absence of pyridine. The yield of benzoic acid was higher than that in the Snia-Viscosa process, which requires corrosive halogen ions and acidic solvents in the homogeneous reaction media. The catalyst was easily recycled by simple filtration and reusable after washing and drying.

Pd-supported on WO3-ZrO2 (W/Zr atomic ratio=0.2) calcined at 1073 K was found to be highly active and selective for gas-phase oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid in the presence of water at 423 K and 0.6 MPa. Contact time dependence demonstrated that acetic acid is formed via acetaldehyde formed by a Wacker-type reaction, not through ethanol by hydration of ethylene.

The preparation of porous films directly deposited onto the surface of catalyst particles is attracting increasing attention. We report here for the first time a method that can be carried out at ambient pressure for the preparation of porous films deposited over 3 mm diameter catalyst particles of silica-supported Pt-Fe. Characterization of the sample prepared at ambient pressure (i.e., open air, OA) and its main structural differences as compared with a Na-A (LTA) coated catalyst made using an autoclave-based method are presented. The OA-coated material predominantly exhibited an amorphous film over the catalyst surface with between 4 and 13% of crystallinity as compared with fully crystallized LTA zeolite crystals. This coated sample was highly selective for CO oxidation in the presence of butane with no butane oxidation observed up to 350 degrees C. This indicates, for the first time, that the presence of a crystalline membrane is not necessary for the difference in light off temperature between CO and butane to be achieved and that amorphous films may also produce this effect. An examination of the space velocity dependence and adsorption of Na+ on the catalysts indicates that the variation in CO and butane oxidation activity is not caused by site blocking predominantly, although the Pt activity was lowered by contact with this alkali.

The mechanism of CO oxidation reactions over undoped and gold-doped CuMnOX (Hopcalite) catalysts has been examined using a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor Gold doping has been found to increase the activity of the mixed oxide catalyst significantly however using consecutive pulsing TAP experiments the presence of gold was not found to affect the contribution of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism Conversely gold doping was found to promote the Mars van Krevelen mechanism Using CO and O-2 multi-pulse TAP experiments the gold was found to modify the catalyst surface such that it stores much more oxygen that is active for the CO oxidation The CO multi-pulse experiments indicated that two distinct types of active oxygen species were found to be involved in the CO oxidation One type was observed in a similar amount on both doped and undoped catalysts and was associated with mixed oxide while the second type was only found on the gold-doped catalyst and was therefore clearly associated with the presence of gold on the catalyst surface The latter was found to be much less active than the oxygen inherent to the oxide but was at a concentration of approximately 10 times larger leading to the enhanced activity observed on gold doping (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

The activity of a 5-wt% Cu/CeO2-x catalyst during preferential CO oxidation in hydrogen-rich gas mixtures was studied in a microchannel reactor. The CO concentration dropped from 1 vol.% to 10 ppm at a selectivity of 60%, at a temperature of 190 degrees C, and a weight hour space velocity (WHSV) of 55,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). Both the CO concentration and the temperature increased when the WHSV was increased from 50,000 to 500,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). An increase of the O-2 concentration from a 1.2 to 3 fold excess reduced the CO concentration to 10 ppm in a broad temperature interval of 50 degrees C at WHSVs up to 275,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). The preferential CO oxidation could be carried out at higher flow rates and at higher selectivities in the microchannel reactor compared to a fixed-bed flow reactor. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of a series of thioethers (2-thiomethylpyrimidine, 2-thiomethyl-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine, 2-thiobenzylpyrimidine, 2-thiobenzyl-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, thioanisole, and n-heptyl methyl sulfide) was performed in ionic liquids by using MCM-41 and UVM-type mesoporous catalysts containing Ti, or Ti and Ge. A range of triflate, tetrafluoroborate, trifluoroacetate, lactate and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquids were used. The oxidations were carried out by using anhydrous hydrogen peroxide or the urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct and showed that ionic liquids are very effective solvents, achieving greater reactivity and selectivity than reactions performed in dioxane. The effects of halide and acid impurities on the reactions were also investigated. Recycling experiments on catalysts were carried out in order to evaluate Ti leaching and its effect on activity and selectivity.
