Groupers (Epinephelinae) are prominent marine fishes distributed in the warmer waters of the world. Review of the literature suggests that trematodes are known from only 62 of the 159 species and only 9 of 15 genera; nearly 90% of host-parasite combinations have been reported only once or twice. All 20 families and all but 7 of 76 genera of trematodes found in epinephelines also occur in non-epihephelines. Only 12 genera of trematodes are reported from both the Atlantic-Eastern Pacific and the Indo-West Pacific. Few (perhaps no) species are credibly cosmopolitan but some have wide distributions across the Indo-West Pacific. The hierarchical 'relatedness' of epinephelines as suggested by how they share trematode taxa (families, genera, species) shows little congruence with what is known of their phylogeny. The major determinant of relatedness appears to be geographical proximity. Together these attributes suggest that host-parasite coevolution has contributed little to the evolution of trematode communities of epinephelines. Instead, they appear to have arisen through localized episodes of host-switching, presumably both into and out of the epinephelines. The Epinephelinae may well be typical of most groups of marine fishes both in the extent to which their trematode parasites are known and in that, apparently, co-evolution has contributed little to the evolution of their communities of trematodes.

The disposition kinetics of six cationic drugs in perfused diseased and normal rat livers were determined by multiple indicator dilution and related to the drug physicochemical properties and liver histopathology. A carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)induced acute hepatocellular injury model had a higher fibrosis index (FI), determined by computer-assisted image analysis, than did an alcohol-induced chronic hepatocellular injury model. The alcohol-treated group had the highest hepatic alpha(1)- acid glycoprotein, microsomal protein (MP), and cytochrome P450 (P450) concentrations. Various pharmacokinetic parameters could be related to the octanol-water partition coefficient (log P-app) of the drug as a surrogate for plasma membrane partition coefficient and affinity for MP or P450, the dependence being lower in the CCl4-treated group and higher in the alcohol-treated group relative to controls. Stepwise regression analysis showed that hepatic extraction ratio, permeability-surface area product, tissue-binding constant, intrinsic clearance, partition ratio of influx (k(in)) and efflux rate constant (k(out)), and k(in)/k(out) were related to physicochemical properties of drug (log P-app or pK(a)) and liver histopathology (FI, MP, or P450). In addition, hepatocyte organelle ion trapping of cationic drugs was evident in all groups. It is concluded that fibrosis-inducing hepatic disease effects on cationic drug disposition in the liver may be predicted from drug properties and liver histopathology.

Immunity induced by the 19-kDa fragment of Plasmodium yoelii merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP1(19)) is dependent on high titers of specific antibodies present at the time of challenge and a continuing active immune response postinfection. However, the specificity of the active immune response postinfection has not been defined. In particular, it is not known whether anti-MSP1(19) antibodies that arise following infection alone are sufficient for protection. We developed systems to investigate whether an MSP1(19)-specific antibody response alone both prechallenge and postchallenge is sufficient for protection. We were able to exclude antibodies with other specificities, as well as any contribution of MSP1(19)-specific CD4(+) T cells acting independent of antibody, and we concluded that an immune response focused solely on MSP1(19)-specific antibodies is sufficient for protection. The data imply that the ability of natural infection to boost an MSPI,g-specific antibody response should greatly improve vaccine efficacy.

We address the question of whether there are laws in ecology. Although there has been a great deal of recent interest in this topic, much of the relevant debate has been conducted under some common misconceptions about what laws of nature are. Once these misconceptions are cleared up, the case for ecology having laws is much stronger. Indeed, we suggest that the case for laws in ecology is no better or worse than the case for laws in physics.

ABSTRACT: This study was performed to analyze the relationship between Death Perspectives, Social Support and Loneliness in late life. The sample was composed of 117 adults (34 males and 83 females), ranging in age from 65 and 92 years with a mean of 76,36 years (SD=7,150). Three scales were used for data collection: the Portuguese version of Death Perspectives Scales (Barros, 2004) and The UCLA Loneliness Scale (Neto, 1989), and also Social Support Satisfaction Scale (Ribeiro, 1999). The data revealed a negative correlation between Death Perspectives – death as a natural end and Social Support (r= .02; p< .05), a negative correlation between Death Perspectives – death as a natural end and Loneliness (r= -.14; p< .05) and a positive correlation between Social Support and Loneliness (r=.37; p< .05; r=.43; p<.05),. These results confirmed 2 hypotheses previously made. Considering other studies, these results and their implications were discussed.

ABSTRACT: The death of a child at the hands of its mother or of a mother at the hands of her child is a rare reality that causes a collective reaction of shock and disgust. In turn, the scientific community seeks explanations, classifications and ways of predicting and preventing further tragedies. The current study examined five cases of filicide and six cases of matricide, and personality characteristics and social and family frameworks were assessed, through the application of an interview, two personality tests, a general intelligence test and an impulsivity test. With the exception of 4 cases of matricide, the remaining subjects did not show any serious mental problems or severe anti-social personality disturbance, the most common factors being of social and family nature. These factors, combined with their personality characteristics and intelligence level, led the subjects to the act, thus showing the need to strengthen social and mental health policies, as well as the need for a greater knowledge on the subject who commits the offence, from the part of those who are responsible for judging him and of those who are in charge of rehabilitating him.
