A novel material comprised of bacterial cellulose (BC) and Laponite clay with different inorganic organic ratios (m/m) was prepared by the contact of never-dried membranes of BC with a previous dispersion of clay particles in water. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) data of composite materials revealed an effective adhesion of clay over the surface of BC membrane; inorganic particles also penetrate into the polymer bulk, with a significant change of the surface topography even at 5% of clay loading. As a consequence, the mechanical properties are deeply affected by the presence of clay, increasing the values of the Young modulus and the tensile strength. However the maximum strain is decreased when the clay content is increased in the composite in comparison to pristine BC. The main weight loss step of the composites is shifted towards higher temperatures compared to BC, indicating that the clay particles slightly protect the polymer from thermal and oxidative decomposition. The present paper describes the synthesis and characterization by dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy of Laponite RD/Sodium polystyrenesulfonate nanocomposites obtained by radical photopolymerization initiated by the cationic dye safranine. The presence of the clay mineral does not affect the hydrotropic aggregation of the monomers, but allows a better deaggregation of the initiator molecules, decreasing the quenching of the excited states that leads to the radicals that initiate polymerization. Increasing the amount of clay mineral loading in the polymerization mixture promotes higher monomer conversion and faster polymerization. The size of the nanocomposite particles, measured by light scattering decreases from 400 to 80 nm for clay mineral loadings of 1.0 wt.%. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the clay mineral does not present a regular crystalline structure in the nanocomposite. Atomic force microscopy studies show films of sodium polystyrenesulfonate polymer with embedded Laponite platelets in its structure, forming 1-8 nm height and 25-100 nm diameter aggregates. In this work, we synthesized a novel series of hydrogels composed of polyacrylamide (PAAm), methylcellulose (MC), and calcic montmorillonite (MMt) appropriate for the controlled release of fertilizers, where the components presented a synergistic effect, giving very high fertilizer loading in their structure. The synthesized hydrogel was characterized in relation to morphological, hydrophilic, spectroscopic, structural, thermal, and kinetic properties. After those characterizations, the application potential was verified through sorption and desorption studies of a nitrogenated fertilizer, urea (CO(NH2)2). The swelling degree results showed that the clay loading considerably reduces the water absorption capability; however, the hydrolysis process favored the urea adsorption in the hydrogel nanocomposites, increasing the load content according to the increase of the clay mass. The FTIR spectra indicated that there was incorporation of the clay with the polymeric matrix of the hydrogel and that incorporation increased the water absorption speed (indicated by the kinetic constant k). By an X-ray diffraction technique, good nanodispersion (intercalation) and exfoliation of the clay platelets in the hydrogel matrix were observed. Furthermore, the presence of the montmorillonite in the hydrogel caused the system to liberate the nutrient in a more controlled manner than that with the neat hydrogel in different pH ranges. In conclusion, excellent results were obtained for the controlled desorption of urea, highlighting the hydrolyzed hydrogels containing 50% calcic montmorillonite. This system presented the best desorption results, releasing larger amounts of nutrient and almost 200 times slower than pure urea, i.e., without hydrogel. The total values of nutrients present in the system show that this material is potentially viable for application in agriculture as a nutrient carrier vehicle. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Polyaniline/montmorillonite nanocomposites (PANI/M) were obtained by intercalation of aniline monomer into M modified with different cations and subsequent oxidative polymerization of the aniline. The modified-clay was prepared by ion exchange of sodium, copper and iron cations in the clay (Na–M, Cu–M and Fe–M respectively). Infrared spectroscopy confirms the electrostatic interaction between the oxidized PANI and the negatively charged surface of the clay. X-ray diffraction analysis provides structural information of the prepared materials. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and their thermal degradation was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The weight loss suggests that the PANI chains in the nanocomposites have higher thermal stability than pure PANI. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites increased between 12 and 24 times with respect to the pure M and this increase was dependent on the cation-modification. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a good electrochemical response was observed.

The yield behaviour of a series of melt-mixed polyethylene-modified montmorillonite nanocomposites has been studied as a function of temperature and strain rate and compared to the behaviour of the base polymer. The processing conditions used gave an intercalated structure as assessed by X-ray diffraction. Although there was a modest improvement in stiffness with clay content, the yield behaviour was insensitive to the addition of the clay. Both the base polymer and the nanocomposites showed double yield points. These were analysed as activated rate processes, with the activation energies consistent with the low strain yield point being associated with the alpha(2) molecular relaxation and the higher strain yield point with W axis slip. Raman microprobe spectra of the clay mineral Wyoming SWy-2-sodium montmorillonite intercalated with the surfactants, methyltrioctadecylammonium bromide (TOMA) dimethyldiotadecylammonium bromide (DODMA) and octadecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (ODTMA), have been measured in the CH2 stretching region at external pressures up to ~40 kbar with the aid of a diamond-anvil cell. In the case of the intercalated clays containing TOMA and DODMA, the Raman data afford evidence for gauche to trans conformational changes in the orientation of the CH2 chains in the surfactants with increasing pressure. These conformational changes are reversed completely upon the release of pressure.

In the present study, amino-silane modified layered organosilicates were used to reinforce cyclic olefin copolymer to enhance the thermal, mechanical and moisture impermeable barrier properties. The optimum clay loading (4%) in the nanocomposite increases the thermal stability of the film while further loading decreases film stability. Water absorption behavior at 62 degrees C was carried out and compared with the behavior at room temperature and 48 degrees C. The stiffness of the matrix increases with clay content and the recorded strain to failure for the composite films was lower than the neat film. Dynamic mechanical analysis show higher storage modulus and low loss modulus for 2.5-4 wt% clay loading. Calcium degradation test and device encapsulation also show the evidence of optimum clay loading of 4 wt% for improved low water vapor transmission rates compared to other nanocomposite films. A new type of sulfonated clay (clay-SO3H) was prepared by the ion exchange method with the sulfanilic acid as the surfactant agent. The grafted amount of sulfanilic acid in clay-SO3H was 51.8 mequiv. (100 g)(-1), which was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)/clay-SO3H hybrid membranes which composed of SPEEK and different weight contents of clay-SO3H, were prepared by a solution casting and evaporation method. For comparison, the SPEEK/clay hybrid membranes were produced with the same method.

Deformation behavior of polyethylene/modified montmorillonites with polymerizable surfactant (PE/P-MMT) nanocomposite with strong interfacial interaction was studied by means of morphology observation and X-ray scattering measurements. The orientation of PE chains was accompanied by the orientation of well-dispersed MMT platelets due to the presence of strong interfacial interaction, and both of the orientations were parallel to the deformation direction. The high degree of orientation of MMT platelets and PE chains resulted from the synergistic movement of PE matrix and MMTs, which originated from the presence of a network-like structure.

In this work, an ultrasensitive platform for the detection of cadmium (Cd2+) combining the nafion-graphene nanocomposite film with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) analysis was presented. It is found that this sensing platform exhibits enhanced response to the determination of the Cd2+ and has been used to determine the Cd2+ in real sample with good recovery.

Two series of the nanocomposite hydrogels were synthesized by in-situ solution polymerization. One pre-gel solution was obtained by directly dispersing the montmorillonite (MMT) powder into aqueous monomer solution and the other pre-gel solution was obtained by mixing monomer aqueous solution and the dispersion of MMT. The structure and performance of two series of hydrogels in dry state were studied by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM and Al-27 MAS NMR. Compressing test results showed that the gel strength of the hydrogels prepared by the latter method was much higher than that by the former method. When acryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) was introduced into the system, hydrogels with excellent nanostructure could be synthesized. The result of Al-27 MAS NMR suggested that the chemical environment of aluminum in MMT was changed by the introduction of DAC due to the interaction between the groups of DAC and MMT layers. Thus, the combination of copolymerizing with strong polar monomers and using the dispersion of MMT were the effective ways to obtain tranocomposite hydrogel of MMT and ionic monomers. The nanostructure of the hydrogel improved the gel strength, while the swelling ratio of the hydrogel depended on synergic effects of multifunctional groups.

In this present work, a polymer electrolyte based on polymer/clay nanocomposite has been developed. Montmorillonite (MMT) clay was used as the filler. due to its special size in length and thickness, and its sandwich type structure. The obtained gel polymer electrolytes have high ionic conductivity up to 2.5 mS cm(-1) with high cationic transference number (about 0.64) at room temperature. The influences of the filler on the membrane morphology. the solvent uptake, the ionic conductivity, and the cation transport number were investigated, and thus the significant contribution from the exfoliated organophilic MMT was identified.

A novel path of preparing PP/o-MMT nanocomposites, which pay attention to the breaking up of MMT original agglomerates and dispersing of its primary particles, rather than the intercalation or exfoliation degree of o-MMT, was reported. The method of predispersing the o-MMT particles into a polar poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix and then melt blending the pre-treated PVA/o-MMT hybrids with PP was studied. 3-isopropenyl-alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzene-isocyanate (TMI) was used as a modifier of PVA to improve the compatibility between PVA and PP matrix. Pre-disperse o-MMT with TMI modified PVA was proved to be an effective way to get a composite with fine o-MMT particles dispersion. But the method, which is pre-dispersing o-MMT with non modified PVA and then using TMI to modify such PVA/o-MMT hybrid, would largely reduce the reaction degree between TMI and PVA because of the relatively lower reaction temperature. Although the latter method also can obtain finer dispersion composites than that with using PP-g-MAH as compatibilizer, the relatively higher degradation degree of PP matrix in this method will limit the use of this nanocomposite.
