PbO-BiO 1.5-GaO 1.5-based glasses are good candidates for optical applications, because of some of their interesting characteristics, such as high refraction indices and high transmission in the ultraviolet (UV), visible (VIS), and infrared (IR) regions. A limited stage in the processing of these glasses is the corrosion that is caused by the melt in all currently used conventional crucibles, such as noble metals (platinum or gold) and Al 2O 3. The absorption of crucible material by the glass composition may reduce the transmission level, the cutoff in the UV-VIS, and IR regions, and the thermal stability. In this study, a SnO 2 crucible has been tested for PbO-BiO 1.5-GaO 1.5 molten glass. Optical and thermal analyses show, in some cases, advantages over the use of platinum and Al 2O 3 crucibles. A visible cutoff value of 474 nm has been measured, and a longer melting time (850°C for 4 h) results in a significant reduction of the O-H absorption band at 3.2 μm.

EFFECTS OF ADDING LANTHANUM TO Ni/ZrO2 CATALYSTS ON ETHANOL STEAM REFORMING. The catalytic performance of Ni/ZrO2 catalysts loaded with different lanthanum content for steam reforming of ethanol was investigated. Catalysts were characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction, and X-ray absorption fine structure techniques. Results showed that lanthanum addition led to an increase in the degree of reduction of both NiO and nickel surface species interacting; with the support, due to the higher dispersion effect. The best catalytic performance at 450 degrees C was found for the Ni/2LZ catalyst, which exhibited an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H-2 yield.

The removal of aromatic hydrocarbons from diesel has received considerable attention after environmental regulations that require petroleum refiners to raise cetane number and to limit aromatics in diesel fuel in order to improve combustion efficiency and reduce particulate and NOx emissions. An alternative is blending with Fischer–Tropsch (FT) gas-to-liquid diesel fuel; however, this option may not be economically viable solution in case of extensive blend. Another alternative is to incorporate in the diesel pool a greater fraction of the so-called light cycle oil (LCO). Due to its high aromatics content and its low cetane number (typically between 20 and 30), the incorporation of LCO may have a negative impact on the quality of diesel. Current technologies for LCO improvement are based on hydrogenation to adjust both sulphur and cetane number but while an important fraction of the aromatics present in LCO can be saturated in a deep hydrogenation process, the cetane number may still be lower than the target values specified in diesel legislations, so further upgrading is needed. An interesting technology for improving the cetane number of diesels and maintaining meanwhile high diesel yields is achieved by combining a complete hydrogenation process with a selective ring opening (SRO) reaction of the naphthenic rings. The SRO can be defined as naphthene ring-opening to form compounds with high cetane number, but without any carbon losses. Controlling the interconversion of six- and five- membered rings via an acid-catalyzed ring-contraction step is also of great importance, since selective conversion of six-membered to five-membered naphthene rings greatly influences ring-opening rates and selectivity. High intrinsic activity may be enhanced by deposition of noble metals on acidic, high surface area supports, because it is possible to arrange close proximity of the metal and acid sites. Moreover, in large-pore supports, the diffusion resistance of liquid reactants into the pores is minimized. In addition to metal centres, the acid sites of support also plays role in aromatics hydrogenation. However, the functions of different kinds of acid sites (Brønsted vs. Lewis acidity), and their optimal concentrations and strengths, remain unclear. In the present study we investigated the upgrading of an aromatic-rich feedstock over different type of metal supported on mesoporous silica-alumina. The selective hydrogenolysis and ring opening of tetrahydronaphthalene (THN or tetralin) was carried out as representative of LCO fractions after deep hydrogenation process. In this regards the aim of this study is to evaluate both the effect of metals and that of the supports characterized by different acid distribution and strength, on conversion and selectivity. For this purpose a series of catalysts were prepared by impregnation. The catalysts were characterized and conversion tests of THN were performed in a lab-scale plant operating in the pressure range from 7.0-5.0 MPa and in the temperature range from 300 to 360°C.

Dendrimers are polymeric macromolecules with a regularly branched structure and are synthesised in an iterative fashion. Due to their monodispersity, well-defined shape and extremely high functionality, dendrimers are ideal nano-sized objects for functional and biocompatible surface coatings, biosensing and biomedicine. This dissertation describes the synthesis of ten novel water-soluble phosphorus containing dendrimers and their application in different biological and biomimetic systems. The dendrimers can be divided into two classes; the first type contains either a ferrocene at the core or 24 ferrocenes in the branches. They showed reversible reduction-oxidation behaviour and might be applied in electronic multilayered architectures. Dendrimers of the second class carry a dithiolane functionalised core that can strongly bind to noble metals, like gold substrates. Although such dendrimer coated substrates were unable to tether defect-free lipid bilayer membranes, the coatings were successfully applied for culturing Human Osteoblast cells. The cell adhesion to a coating of polycationic dendrimers was so strong that cell division could not take place, specifically evoking apoptosis. The polyanionic dendrimers, however, promoted excellent cell adhesion and proliferation. Therefore, the practical application of such macromolecular architectures can be envisioned, such as in dendrimer coatings for tissue engineering and or medical implants.

Samples obtained from different locations within the prototype liquid metal spallation target MEGAPIE irradiated in 2006 at PSI were analysed using γ-spectrometry. A variety of radionuclides formed by reaction of the target material, lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE), with the proton beam and secondary particles were identified. While nuclides representing the target material itself (207Bi) and nuclides of noble metals were found in LBE samples throughout the target, nuclides of electropositive metals were found to be quantitatively deposited on free surfaces and material interfaces within the target system. This behaviour is analysed in more detail based on results obtained for three nuclides representing groups of elements with distinct chemical behaviour, namely 207Bi, 194Hg/Au and 173Lu. Quantitative analysis results are given and compared with predictions obtained using nuclear physics calculations for those nuclides showing rather homogeneous distribution within the target. Possible reasons for the separation of radionuclides from the liquid metal and their deposition on surfaces are given, and consequences arising for nuclear facilities utilizing liquid metals are discussed.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the composition and the microstructural and mechanical characterization of three different types of lingual brackets. MATERIALS AND METHODS Incognito™ (3M Unitek), In-Ovation L (DENTSPLY GAC) and STb™ (Light Lingual System, ORMCO) lingual brackets were studied under the scanning electron microscope employing backscattered electron imaging and their elemental composition was analysed by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Additionally, Vickers hardness was assessed using a universal hardness-testing machine, and the indentation modulus was measured according to instrumented indentation test. Two-way analysis of variance was conducted employing bracket type and location (base and wing) as discriminating variable. Significant differences among groups were allocated by post hoc Student-Newman-Keuls multiple comparison analysis at 95% level of significance. RESULTS Three different phases were identified for Incognito and In-Ovation L bracket based on mean atomic number contrast. On the contrary, STb did not show mean atomic contrast areas and thus it is recognized as a single phase. Incognito is a one-piece bracket with the same structure in wing and base regions. Incognito consists mainly of noble metals while In-Ovation L and STb show similar formulations of ferrous alloys in wing and base regions. No significant differences were found between ferrous brackets in hardness and modulus values, but there were significant differences between wing and base regions. Incognito illustrated intermediate values with significant differences from base and wing values of ferrous brackets. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS Significant differences exist in microstructure, elemental composition, and mechanical properties among the brackets tested; these might have a series of clinical implications during mechanotherapy.

The concentrations of the platinum-group elements (PGE) Ir, Ru, Pt and Pd were determined in 11 abyssal peridotites from ODP Sites 895 and 920, as well in six ultramafic rocks from the Horoman peridotite body, Japan, which is generally thought to represent former asthenospheric mantle. Individual oceanic peridotites from ODP drill cores are characterized by variable absolute and relative PGE abundances, but the average PGE concentrations of both ODP suites are very similar. This indicates that the distribution of the noble metals in the mantle is characterized by small-scale heterogeneity and large-scale homogeneity. The mean Ru/Ir and Pt/Ir ratios of all ODP peridotites are within 15% and 3%, respectively, of CI-chondritic values. These results are consistent with models that advocate that a late veneer of chondritic material provided the present PGE budget of the silicate Earth. The data are not reconcilable with the addition of a significant amount of differentiated outer core material to the upper mantle. Furthermore, the results of petrogenetic model calculations indicate that the addition of sulfides derived from percolating magmas may be responsible for the variable and generally suprachondritic Pd/Ir ratios observed in abyssal peridotites. Ultramafic rocks from the Horoman peridotite have PGE signatures distinct from abyssal peridotites: Pt/Ir and Pd/Ir are correlated with lithophile element concentrations such that the most fertile lherzolites are characterized by non-primitive PGE ratios. This indicates that processes more complex than simple in-situ melt extraction are required to produce the geochemical systematics, if the Horoman peridotite formed from asthenospheric mantle with chondritic relative PGE abundances. In this case, the PGE results can be explained by melt depletion accompanied or followed by mixing of depleted residues with sulfides, with or without the addition of basaltic melt.

Abundance of noble metals and bulk chemical composition have been studied in bottom sediments of the Chukchi Sea. Distribution of noble metals and their correlation with major and trace elements in the sediments have been analyzed using multicomponent statistics. It was established that average contents of noble metals in the bottom sediments of the Chukchi Sea significantly exceed those both in shelf terrigenous sediments and stratisphere. Osmium and iridium enrich mixed and pelitic sediments relative to shallow-water sediments and their influx is presumably determined by erosion of coastal and bottom unconsolidated deposits. High Ag, Ru, Au, and Pt contents were identified in clayey sediments enriched in biogenic elements in the some areas of the Southern Chukchi plain (Chukchi Sea) confined to intersection zones of submeridional and sublatitudinal structures of the graben-rift system, which formed in Mesozoic and activated in Late Cenozoic.

The main aim of this thesis is the controlled and reproducible synthesis of functional materials at the nanoscale. In the first chapter, a tuning of morphology and magnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles is presented. It was achieved by an innovative approach, which involves the use of an organic macrocycle (calixarene) to induce the oriented aggregation of NPs during the synthesis. This method is potentially applicable to the preparation of other metal oxide NPs by thermal decomposition of the respective precursors. Products obtained, in particular the multi-core nanoparticles, show remarkable magnetic and colloidal properties, making them very interesting for biomedical applications. The synthesis and functionalisation of plasmonic Au and Ag nanoparticles is presented in the second chapter. Here, a supramolecular approach was exploited to achieve a controlled and potentially reversible aggregation between Au and Ag NPs. This aggregation phenomena was followed by UV - visible spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. In the final chapters, the conjugation of plasmonic and magnetic functionalities was tackled through the preparation of dimeric nanostructures. Au - Fe oxide heterodimeric nanoparticles were prepared and their magnetic properties thoroughly characterised. The results demonstrate the formation of FeO (wustite), together with magnetite, during the thermal decomposition of the iron precursor. By an oxidation process that preserves Au in the dimeric structures, wustite completely disappeared, with the formation of either magnetite and / or maghemite, much better from the magnetic point of view. The plasmon resonance of Au results damped by the presence of the iron oxide, a material with high refractive index, but it is still present if the Au domain of the nanoparticles is exposed towards the bulk. Finally, remarkable hyperthermia, also in vitro, was found for these structures.
