The kinetics of eutectoid decomposition beta(1)' --> gamma(2) + (alpha + gamma(2)) in Cu-12.86 wt% Al and Cu-12.84 wt% Al-1.98 wt% Ag alloys was studied by hardness measurements, using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. The results indicate that the presence of silver seems to influence the nucleation rate and the activation energy of the reaction.

The completeness of beta-phase decomposition reaction in the Cu-11wt%Al-xwt%Ag alloys (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and optical microscopy (OM). The results indicated that beta-phase transformations are highly dependent on cooling rate and on the presence of Ag. on slow cooling, the silver presence prevents the beta- and beta(1)-phase decomposition; thus, inducing the martensitic phase formation. After rapid cooling, a new thermal event is observed and the reverse martensitic transformation is shifted to lower temperatures.

The electrochemical oxidation of some p-substituted benzylic derivatives of Co(III) dimethylglyoximato and Co(III)bis(salicylaldehydc)o-phenylenediimine in dimethylformamide. 0.2 M in tetraethyammonium perchlorate, on a platinum electrode, at several temperatures, is described as an ECE type, the first electrochemical step being a quasi-reversible one-electron charge transfer at room temperature. At temperatures around -20°C, or lower, the influence of the irreversible chemical decomposition of the oxidized species, via a solvent or other nucleophilic-assisted reaction, is negligible. It is suggested that at low temperatures the oxidation to the formally CoIV-R species is followed by an isomerization reaction in which this complex is partially transformed in a CoIII-(R) species or a s π-complex which undergoes an electroreduction at less positive potentials than those corresponding to the reduction of the CoIV-R species. © 1982.

The study of the kinetics of martensitic phase decomposition in the Cu-10wt.%Al alloy with Ag additions showed that the presence of Ag retarded the eutectoid decomposition reaction and enhanced martensite stabilization. This stabilization effect was attributed to Ag atoms redistribution as structure defects, increase in the numbers of Cu-Al pairs due to Ag-Al interaction and the Al atoms redistribution around one Cu atom at the sub-lattice of the martensitic crystal. © 2008 Trans Tech Publications.

The effect of support on the properties of rhodium and cobalt-based catalysts for ethanol steam reforming was studied in this work, by comparing the use of magnesia, alumina and Mg-Al oxide (obtained from hydrotalcite) as supports. It was found that metallic rhodium particles with around 2.4-2.6 nm were formed on all supports, but Mg-Al oxide led to the narrowest particles size distribution; cobalt was supposed to be located on the support, affecting its acidity. Rhodium interacts strongly with the support in the order: alumina> Mg-Al oxide > magnesia. The magnesium-containing catalysts showed low ethene selectivity and high hydrogen selectivity while the alumina-based ones showed high ethene selectivity, assigned to the Lewis sites of alumina. The Mg-Al oxide-supported rhodium and cobalt catalyst was the most promising sample to produce hydrogen by ethanol reforming, showing the highest hydrogen yield, low ethene selectivity and high specific surface area during reaction. Aim of the present work of thesis is to synthesize new non-noble metal based complexes to be employ in redox reactions by a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism. The need of replacing toxic and expensive precious metal complexes with more available and benign metals, has led to the development of new compounds based on cobalt and iron, which are the metals investigated in this study. A carbonyl-tetrahydroborato-bis[(2-diisopropylphosphino)ethyl]amine-cobalt complex bearing a PNP-type ligand is synthesized by a three-step route. Optimization attempt of reaction route were assessed in order to lowering reaction times and solvent waste. New cobalt complex has been tested in esters hydrogenation as well as in acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of ethanol. Other varieties of substrates were also tested in order to evaluate any possible applications. Concerning iron complex, dicarbonyl-(η4-3,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,5-diphenylcyclopenta-2,4-dienone)(1,3-dimethyl-ilidene)iron is synthesized by a three steps route, involving transmetallation of a silver complex, derived from an imidazolium salt, to iron complex. In order to avoid solvent waste, optimization is assessed. Studies were performed to assess activity of triscarbonyl iron precursor toward imidazolium salt and silver complexes.

The thesis is divided into four chapters. They are: introduction, experimental, results and discussion about the free ligands and results and discussion about the complexes. The First Chapter, the introductory chapter, is a general introduction to the study of solid state reactions. The Second Chapter is devoted to the materials and experimental methods that have been used for carrying out tile experiments. TIle Third Chapter is concerned with the characterisations of free ligands (Picolinic acid, nicotinic acid, and isonicotinic acid) by using elemental analysis, IR spectra, X-ray diffraction, and mass spectra. Additionally, the thermal behaviour of free ligands in air has been studied by means of thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The behaviour of thermal decomposition of the three free ligands was not identical Finally, a computer program has been used for kinetic evaluation of non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry data according to a composite and single heating rate methods in comparison with the methods due to Ozawa and Kissinger methods. The most probable reaction mechanism for the free ligands was the Avrami-Erofeev equation (A) that described the solid-state nucleation-growth mechanism. The activation parameters of the decomposition reaction for free ligands were calculated and the results of different methods of data analysis were compared and discussed. The Fourth Chapter, the final chapter, deals with the preparation of cobalt, nickel, and copper with mono-pyridine carboxylic acids in aqueous solution. The prepared complexes have been characterised by analyses, IR spectra, X-ray diffraction, magnetic moments, and electronic spectra. The stoichiometry of these compounds was ML2x(H20), (where M = metal ion, L = organic ligand and x = water molecule). The environments of cobalt, nickel, and copper nicotinates and the environments of cobalt and nickel picolinates were octahedral, whereas the environment of copper picolinate [Cu(PA)2] was tetragonal. However, the environments of cobalt, nickel, and copper isonicotinates were polymeric octahedral structures. The morphological changes that occurred throughout the decomposition were followed by SEM observation. TG, DTG, and DSC measurements have studied the thermal behaviour of the prepared complexes in air. During the degradation processes of the hydrated complexes, the crystallisation water molecules were lost in one or two steps. This was also followed by loss of organic ligands and the metal oxides remained. Comparison between the DTG temperatures of the first and second steps of the dehydration suggested that the water of crystallisation was more strongly bonded with anion in Ni(II) complexes than in the complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II). The intermediate products of decomposition were not identified. The most probable reaction mechanism for the prepared complexes was also Avrami-Erofeev equation (A) characteristic of solid-state nucleation-growth mechanism. The tempemture dependence of conductivity using direct current was determined for cobalt, nickel, Cl.nd copper isonicotinates. An activation energy (ΔΕ), the activation energy (ΔΕ ) were calculated. The ternperature and frequency dependence of conductivity, the frequency dependence of dielectric constant, and the dielectric loss for nickel isonicotinate were determined by using altemating current. The value of s paralneter and the value of'density of state [N(Ef)] were calculated. A family of titania derived nanocomposites synthesized via sol-gel and hydrothermal routes exhibit excellent performance for the photocatalytic degradation of two important exemplar water pollutants, oxytetracycline and Congo Red. Low loadings of Co3O4 nanoparticles dispersed over the surfaces of anatase TiO2 confer visible light photoactivity for the aqueous phase decomposition of organics through the resulting heterojunction and reduced band gap. Subsequent modification of these Co3O4/TiO2 composites by trace amounts of graphene oxide nanosheets in the presence of a diamine linker further promotes both oxytetracycline and Congo Red photodegradation under simulated solar and visible irradiation, through a combination of enhanced photoresponse and consequent radical generation. Radical quenching and fluorescence experiments implicate holes and hydroxyl radicals as the respective primary and secondary active species responsible for oxidative photodegradation of pollutants.

The subject of the present work is the synthesis of novel nanoscale objects, designed for self-propulsion under external actuation. The synthesized objects present asymmetric hybrid particles, consisting of a magnetic core and polymer flagella and their hydrodynamic properties under the actuation by external magnetic fields are investigated. The single-domain ferromagnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are prepared by thermal decomposition of a mixture of metalorganic complexes based on iron (III) cobalt (II) in non-polar solvents. Further modification of the particles includes the growth of the silver particle on the surface of the cobalt ferrite particle to form a dumbbell-shaped heterodimer. Different possible mechanisms of dumbbell formation are discussed. A polyelectrolyte tail with ability to adjust the persistence length of the polymer, and thus the stiffness of the tail, by variation of pH is attached to the particles. A polymer tail consisting of a polyacrylic acid chain is synthesized by hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A functional thiol end-group enables selective attachment of the tail to the silver part of the dumbbell, resulting in an asymmetric functionalization of the dumbbells. The calculations on the propulsion force and the sperm number for the resulting particles reveal a theoretical possibility for the propelled motion. Under the actuation of the particles with flagella by alternating magnetic field an increase in the diffusion coefficient compared to non-actuated or non-functionalized particles is observed. Further development of such systems for application as nanomotors or in drug delivery is promising.
