The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a de facto regional power in the Arab world. Its role has been crucial in some of the outcomes of the Arab Spring. The GCC countries have been very pragmatic in dealing with the uprisings, avoiding any revolutionary spill-over throughout the Gulf region. This paper examines to what extent the policies of the European Union (EU) in the Gulf have changed since the beginning of the Arab Spring. It argues that despite the calls by the European Parliament and by the High Representative Baroness Ashton to improve the relationship, the EU’s support for a new policy in the Gulf after the Arab Spring is stalling, and little new or concrete has been achieved. The paper concludes that the Union needs a reinforced partnership that merges the various EU policies in the region into a single strategic partnership with the Arab countries.

The residues generation is a quite serious problem in several industrial areas and also in the lumbering area. The search for the elimination or reduction of the volume of generated residues is endless, however limited, resulting in the search for a proper destination or better use, instead of simply burning it. A lot of uses and services are commonly proposed, but with low aggregated value to the residue. This work shows the usage viability of different discarded residues and wood composites in the production of an electric guitar. Cupiúba, ipê and jatobá residues have been used besides wood composites of pinus. The residues and wood composites have shown appropriate resistance, surfacing quality and design terms, and could be used to substitute the traditionally wood used in the production of the instrument as well as in other products of similar characteristics and with larger aggregated value.

A dissertação tem como objeto estudar a Coleção Etnográfica Xikrín do Cateté que está sob a guarda da Reserva Técnica do Laboratório de Antropologia Arthur Napoleão Figueiredo do Departamento de Antropologia da Universidade Federal do Pará. A Coleção Xikrín do Cateté é formada por 144 artefatos, coletados pelo antropólogo Protásio Frikel (1912-1974) no início da década de 60, ao realizar trabalho de campo entre os Xikrín. O grupo indígena é considerado na literatura antropológica como um sub-grupo Kayapó, falante de dialeto da língua Kayapó, da família Jê, pertencente ao tronco lingüístico macro-Jê. Vivem às margens do rio Cateté, no município de Parauapebas, na região sudeste do estado do Pará. Atualmente, habitam duas aldeias: a aldeia Cateté, com 600 pessoas e a aldeia Djudjê-kô, com 240 pessoas, distante uma da outra cerca de 18 km. A Coleção é estudada com o propósito de contextualizar os artefatos que a constituem na busca de desvendar significados e sentidos e de reconhecer potencialidades atuais de uso dos objetos. Na trilha da contextualização, utilizo a Antropologia Interpretativa e a Análise de Discurso associadas aos dados obtidos durante o trabalho de campo realizado junto ao grupo, em julho de 2000 e no período de fevereiro a abril de 2001, indo da Coleção Etnográfica às aldeias Xikrín. A Coleção foi classificada a partir de Berta Ribeiro (1988), compreendendo adornos plumários e adornos de materiais ecléticos que ornamentam o corpo Xikrín no dia-a-dia e em momentos rituais, como o Merêrêméi; há também, armas; instrumentos musicais; objetos rituais, mágicos e lúdicos; trançados e objetos utilizados na preparação de alimentos, para o conforto doméstico e o trabalho manual, observado na Reserva e nas aldeias. A produção e o uso de 60% dos artefatos observados na Coleção Etnográfica Xikrín do Cateté refletem aspectos da realidade e da identidade Xikrín apreendidas de geração a geração considerando valores e concepções que os aproximam e os distinguem dos demais grupos indígenas.

Os conhecimentos tradicionais se ligam a processos de aprendizagem baseados na interação dos grupos humanos com o meio ambiente, envolvendo experimentação, especulação e experiência de seus membros que sistematizam um conjunto de concepções e práticas de socialização intergeracional. O estudo desenvolvido entre os Suruí Aikewára, no estado do Pará, aborda a constituição desses conhecimentos e práticas relativas ao canto ligando-o aos mitos e aos processos de construção dos instrumentos musicais, como via de entrada para o entendimento do universo cultural indígena, acionados na dança do Sapurahái e no rito Karuára.

OBJECTIVES: There are no data in the literature with regard to the acute effects of different styles of music on the geometric indices of heart rate variability. In this study, we evaluated the acute effects of relaxant baroque and excitatory heavy metal music on the geometric indices of heart rate variability in women. METHODS: We conducted this study in 21 healthy women ranging in age from 18 to 35 years. We excluded persons with previous experience with musical instruments and persons who had an affinity for the song styles. We evaluated two groups: Group 1 (n = 21), who were exposed to relaxant classical baroque musical and excitatory heavy metal auditory stimulation; and Group 2 (n = 19), who were exposed to both styles of music and white noise auditory stimulation. Using earphones, the volunteers were exposed to baroque or heavy metal music for five minutes. After the first music exposure to baroque or heavy metal music, they remained at rest for five minutes; subsequently, they were re-exposed to the opposite music (70-80 dB). A different group of women were exposed to the same music styles plus white noise auditory stimulation (90 dB). The sequence of the songs was randomized for each individual. We analyzed the following indices: triangular index, triangular interpolation of RR intervals and Poincaré plot (standard deviation of instantaneous beat-by-beat variability, standard deviation of the long-term RR interval, standard deviation of instantaneous beat-by-beat variability and standard deviation of the long-term RR interval ratio), low frequency, high frequency, low frequency/high frequency ratio, standard deviation of all the normal RR intervals, root-mean square of differences between the adjacent normal RR intervals and the percentage of adjacent RR intervals with a difference of duration greater than 50 ms. Heart rate variability was recorded at rest for 10 minutes. RESULTS: The triangular index and the standard deviation of the long-term RR interval indices were reduced during exposure to both music styles in the first group and tended to decrease in the second group whereas the white noise exposure decreased the high frequency index. We observed no changes regarding the triangular interpolation of RR intervals, standard deviation of instantaneous beat-by-beat variability and standard deviation of instantaneous beat-by-beat variability/standard deviation in the long-term RR interval ratio. CONCLUSION: We suggest that relaxant baroque and excitatory heavy metal music slightly decrease global heart rate variability because of the equivalent sound level.

The use of music and/or its elements (instruments, sound, rhythm, melody and harmony) in environments with people attended by public health centers, aims at promoting communication, facilitating the expression and the relationship in the first contact, hence favoring organization of standards and other relevant therapeutic objectives to assist physical, mental, social and cognitive needs of people, thus promoting the process of environmental adaptation, behavioral conditioning and social inclusion. The purpose of this project is to use music and its sound elements, as well as recreational activities, developed in stages called: socialization session, art workshop and complementary activities, with patients assisted at CAOE (Disabled People Dental Care Center) and their relatives. The objective is to provide them psychological wellbeing, inclusion to physical space, relaxation, stimulation of rhythmic and sonorous perceptions, memorization, emotions externalization, help and encouragement for the development of motor coordination during their daily activities of daily. Recreational activities, handling and contacting with musical instruments, broadcasting and producing sounds, stimulate cognitive capacity, interactivity and entertainment activities can greatly contribute to improve the behavioral reaction and adaptation of these patients, during their dental treatment.

Dance-fight-game, art, religiosity, therapy, entertainment, ritual act, in short, "a way of being", are some of the various definitions/qualities attributed to the afro-brazilian cultural manifestation called "Capoeira Angola". Multivocal polysemic in its essence, Capoeira Angola is expressed in different languages which ranges from the types of touches of the musical instruments that make up the orchestra, through different types of songs, until we get the non-verbal communication established by the bodies of "capoeiristas" in the game and/or in the training body situation. The aim of this paper is to think of the line drawing in space, a significant problem in the execution of body movements of this practice. To address the relationship between line, efficiency and aesthetics of body movements, it is developed an ethnography in the Academy of João Pequeno de Pastinha-Sports Center of Capoeira Angola, based on anthropological interpretative approach, in which the concept of culture is semiotic.
