Kinematic redundancy occurs when a manipulator possesses more degrees of freedom than those required to execute a given task. Several kinematic techniques for redundant manipulators control the gripper through the pseudo-inverse of the Jacobian, but lead to a kind of chaotic inner motion with unpredictable arm configurations. Such algorithms are not easy to adapt to optimization schemes and, moreover, often there are multiple optimization objectives that can conflict between them. Unlike single optimization, where one attempts to find the best solution, in multi-objective optimization there is no single solution that is optimum with respect to all indices. Therefore, trajectory planning of redundant robots remains an important area of research and more efficient optimization algorithms are needed. This paper presents a new technique to solve the inverse kinematics of redundant manipulators, using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. This scheme combines the closed-loop pseudo-inverse method with a multi-objective genetic algorithm to control the joint positions. Simulations for manipulators with three or four rotational joints, considering the optimization of two objectives in a workspace without and with obstacles are developed. The results reveal that it is possible to choose several solutions from the Pareto optimal front according to the importance of each individual objective.

Many real-world optimization problems contain multiple (often conflicting) goals to be optimized concurrently, commonly referred to as multi-objective problems (MOPs). Over the past few decades, a plethora of multi-objective algorithms have been proposed, often tested on MOPs possessing two or three objectives. Unfortunately, when tasked with solving MOPs with four or more objectives, referred to as many-objective problems (MaOPs), a large majority of optimizers experience significant performance degradation. The downfall of these optimizers is that simultaneously maintaining a well-spread set of solutions along with appropriate selection pressure to converge becomes difficult as the number of objectives increase. This difficulty is further compounded for large-scale MaOPs, i.e., MaOPs possessing large amounts of decision variables. In this thesis, we explore the challenges of many-objective optimization and propose three new promising algorithms designed to efficiently solve MaOPs. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed optimizers to perform very well, often outperforming state-of-the-art many-objective algorithms.

This paper proposes a methodology to consider the effects of the integration of DG on planning. Since DG has potential to defer investments in networks, the impact of DG on grid capacity is evaluated. A multi-objective optimization tool based on the meta-heuristic MEPSO is used, supporting an alternative approach to exploiting the Pareto front features. Tests were performed in distinct conditions with two well-known distribution networks: IEEE-34 and IEEE-123. The results combined minimization and maximization in order to produce different Pareto fronts and determine the extent of the impact caused by DG. The analysis provides useful information, such as the identification of futures that should be considered in planning. A future means a set of realizations of all uncertainties. MEPSO also presented a satisfactory performance in obtaining the Pareto fronts. © 2011 IEEE.

La influencia de la aerodinámica en el diseño de los trenes de alta velocidad, unida a la necesidad de resolver nuevos problemas surgidos con el aumento de la velocidad de circulación y la reducción de peso del vehículo, hace evidente el interés de plantear un estudio de optimización que aborde tales puntos. En este contexto, se presenta en esta tesis la optimización aerodinámica del testero de un tren de alta velocidad, llevada a cabo mediante el uso de métodos de optimización avanzados. Entre estos métodos, se ha elegido aquí a los algoritmos genéticos y al método adjunto como las herramientas para llevar a cabo dicha optimización. La base conceptual, las características y la implementación de los mismos se detalla a lo largo de la tesis, permitiendo entender los motivos de su elección, y las consecuencias, en términos de ventajas y desventajas que cada uno de ellos implican. El uso de los algorimos genéticos implica a su vez la necesidad de una parametrización geométrica de los candidatos a óptimo y la generación de un modelo aproximado que complementa al método de optimización. Estos puntos se describen de modo particular en el primer bloque de la tesis, enfocada a la metodología seguida en este estudio. El segundo bloque se centra en la aplicación de los métodos a fin de optimizar el comportamiento aerodinámico del tren en distintos escenarios. Estos escenarios engloban los casos más comunes y también algunos de los más exigentes a los que hace frente un tren de alta velocidad: circulación en campo abierto con viento frontal o viento lateral, y entrada en túnel. Considerando el caso de viento frontal en campo abierto, los dos métodos han sido aplicados, permitiendo una comparación de las diferentes metodologías, así como el coste computacional asociado a cada uno, y la minimización de la resistencia aerodinámica conseguida en esa optimización. La posibilidad de evitar parametrizar la geometría y, por tanto, reducir el coste computacional del proceso de optimización es la característica más significativa de los métodos adjuntos, mientras que en el caso de los algoritmos genéticos se destaca la simplicidad y capacidad de encontrar un óptimo global en un espacio de diseño multi-modal o de resolver problemas multi-objetivo. El caso de viento lateral en campo abierto considera nuevamente los dos métoxi dos de optimización anteriores. La parametrización se ha simplificado en este estudio, lo que notablemente reduce el coste numérico de todo el estudio de optimización, a la vez que aún recoge las características geométricas más relevantes en un tren de alta velocidad. Este análisis ha permitido identificar y cuantificar la influencia de cada uno de los parámetros geométricos incluídos en la parametrización, y se ha observado que el diseño de la arista superior a barlovento es fundamental, siendo su influencia mayor que la longitud del testero o que la sección frontal del mismo. Finalmente, se ha considerado un escenario más a fin de validar estos métodos y su capacidad de encontrar un óptimo global. La entrada de un tren de alta velocidad en un túnel es uno de los casos más exigentes para un tren por el pico de sobrepresión generado, el cual afecta a la confortabilidad del pasajero, así como a la estabilidad del vehículo y al entorno próximo a la salida del túnel. Además de este problema, otro objetivo a minimizar es la resistencia aerodinámica, notablemente superior al caso de campo abierto. Este problema se resuelve usando algoritmos genéticos. Dicho método permite obtener un frente de Pareto donde se incluyen el conjunto de óptimos que minimizan ambos objetivos. ABSTRACT Aerodynamic design of trains influences several aspects of high-speed trains performance in a very significant level. In this situation, considering also that new aerodynamic problems have arisen due to the increase of the cruise speed and lightness of the vehicle, it is evident the necessity of proposing an optimization study concerning the train aerodynamics. Thus, the aerodynamic optimization of the nose shape of a high-speed train is presented in this thesis. This optimization is based on advanced optimization methods. Among these methods, genetic algorithms and the adjoint method have been selected. A theoretical description of their bases, the characteristics and the implementation of each method is detailed in this thesis. This introduction permits understanding the causes of their selection, and the advantages and drawbacks of their application. The genetic algorithms requirethe geometrical parameterization of any optimal candidate and the generation of a metamodel or surrogate model that complete the optimization process. These points are addressed with a special attention in the first block of the thesis, focused on the methodology considered in this study. The second block is referred to the use of these methods with the purpose of optimizing the aerodynamic performance of a high-speed train in several scenarios. These scenarios englobe the most representative operating conditions of high-speed trains, and also some of the most exigent train aerodynamic problems: front wind and cross-wind situations in open air, and the entrance of a high-speed train in a tunnel. The genetic algorithms and the adjoint method have been applied in the minimization of the aerodynamic drag on the train with front wind in open air. The comparison of these methods allows to evaluate the methdology and computational cost of each one, as well as the resulting minimization of the aerodynamic drag. Simplicity and robustness, the straightforward realization of a multi-objective optimization, and the capability of searching a global optimum are the main attributes of genetic algorithm. However, the requirement of geometrically parameterize any optimal candidate is a significant drawback that is avoided with the use of the adjoint method. This independence of the number of design variables leads to a relevant reduction of the pre-processing and computational cost. Considering the cross-wind stability, both methods are used again for the minimization of the side force. In this case, a simplification of the geometric parameterization of the train nose is adopted, what dramatically reduces the computational cost of the optimization process. Nevertheless, some of the most important geometrical characteristics are still described with this simplified parameterization. This analysis identifies and quantifies the influence of each design variable on the side force on the train. It is observed that the A-pillar roundness is the most demanding design parameter, with a more important effect than the nose length or the train cross-section area. Finally, a third scenario is considered for the validation of these methods in the aerodynamic optimization of a high-speed train. The entrance of a train in a tunnel is one of the most exigent train aerodynamic problems. The aerodynamic consequences of high-speed trains running in a tunnel are basically resumed in two correlated phenomena, the generation of pressure waves and an increase in aerodynamic drag. This multi-objective optimization problem is solved with genetic algorithms. The result is a Pareto front where a set of optimal solutions that minimize both objectives.

Market mechanisms are a means by which resources in contention can be allocated between contending parties, both in human economies and those populated by software agents. Designing such mechanisms has traditionally been carried out by hand, and more recently by automation. Assessing these mechanisms typically involves them being evaluated with respect to multiple conflicting objectives, which can often be nonlinear, noisy, and expensive to compute. For typical performance objectives, it is known that designed mechanisms often fall short on being optimal across all objectives simultaneously. However, in all previous automated approaches, either only a single objective is considered, or else the multiple performance objectives are combined into a single objective. In this paper we do not aggregate objectives, instead considering a direct, novel application of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) to the problem of automated mechanism design. This allows the automatic discovery of trade-offs that such objectives impose on mechanisms. We pose the problem of mechanism design, specifically for the class of linear redistribution mechanisms, as a naturally existing multi-objective optimisation problem. We apply a modified version of NSGA-II in order to design mechanisms within this class, given economically relevant objectives such as welfare and fairness. This application of NSGA-II exposes tradeoffs between objectives, revealing relationships between them that were otherwise unknown for this mechanism class. The understanding of the trade-off gained from the application of MOEAs can thus help practitioners with an insightful application of discovered mechanisms in their respective real/artificial markets.

Heterogeneous multi-core FPGAs contain different types of cores, which can improve efficiency when used with an effective online task scheduler. However, it is not easy to find the right cores for tasks when there are multiple objectives or dozens of cores. Inappropriate scheduling may cause hot spots which decrease the reliability of the chip. Given that, our research builds a simulating platform to evaluate all kinds of scheduling algorithms on a variety of architectures. On this platform, we provide an online scheduler which uses multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (EA). Comparing the EA and current algorithms such as Predictive Dynamic Thermal Management (PDTM) and Adaptive Temperature Threshold Dynamic Thermal Management (ATDTM), we find some drawbacks in previous work. First, current algorithms are overly dependent on manually set constant parameters. Second, those algorithms neglect optimization for heterogeneous architectures. Third, they use single-objective methods, or use linear weighting method to convert a multi-objective optimization into a single-objective optimization. Unlike other algorithms, the EA is adaptive and does not require resetting parameters when workloads switch from one to another. EAs also improve performance when used on heterogeneous architecture. A efficient Pareto front can be obtained with EAs for the purpose of multiple objectives.

Multi-objective optimization is an active field of research with broad applicability in aeronautics. This report details a variant of the original NSGA-II software aimed to improve the performances of such a widely used Genetic Algorithm in finding the optimal Pareto-front of a Multi-Objective optimization problem for the use of UAV and aircraft design and optimsaiton. Original NSGA-II works on a population of predetermined constant size and its computational cost to evaluate one generation is O(mn^2 ), being m the number of objective functions and n the population size. The basic idea encouraging this work is that of reduce the computational cost of the NSGA-II algorithm by making it work on a population of variable size, in order to obtain better convergence towards the Pareto-front in less time. In this work some test functions will be tested with both original NSGA-II and VPNSGA-II algorithms; each test will be timed in order to get a measure of the computational cost of each trial and the results will be compared.

为了降低生料成分的不确定性给水泥生料质量控制系统带来的影响,提出了率值补偿的控制策略.分别为三率值创建目标函数,并利用状态空间搜索策略解决多目标优化问题.针对初始样本空间不能覆盖所有样本的问题,提出了基于神经网络的估算模型,对初始样本空间进行拓扑.通过估价函数对状态空间中的状态量进行评价,得到最优的率值状态量;根据率值对原料配比进行调整,最后使率值偏差得到补偿,同时使给配比造成的波动最小.工业实验结果表明,生料的质量合格率由原来的30%提高到50%,该系统能有效地对配料过程进行优化控制.证明了基于神经网络的状态空间搜索策略为水泥生料配料多目标寻优问题提供了一种可行的方法。

Smart grids with an intensive penetration of distributed energy resources will play an important role in future power system scenarios. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources brings new challenges, requiring an efficient management of those sources. Additional storage resources can be beneficially used to address this problem; the massive use of electric vehicles, particularly of vehicle-to-grid (usually referred as gridable vehicles or V2G), becomes a very relevant issue. This paper addresses the impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in system operation costs and in power demand curve for a distribution network with large penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) units. An efficient management methodology for EVs charging and discharging is proposed, considering a multi-objective optimization problem. The main goals of the proposed methodology are: to minimize the system operation costs and to minimize the difference between the minimum and maximum system demand (leveling the power demand curve). The proposed methodology perform the day-ahead scheduling of distributed energy resources in a distribution network with high penetration of DG and a large number of electric vehicles. It is used a 32-bus distribution network in the case study section considering different scenarios of EVs penetration to analyze their impact in the network and in the other energy resources management.

In this work the multiarea optimal power flow (OPF) problem is decoupled into areas creating a set of regional OPF subproblems. The objective is to solve the optimal dispatch of active and reactive power for a determined area, without interfering in the neighboring areas. The regional OPF subproblems are modeled as a large-scale nonlinear constrained optimization problem, with both continuous and discrete variables. Constraints violated are handled as objective functions of the problem. In this way the original problem is converted to a multiobjective optimization problem, and a specifically-designed multiobjective evolutionary algorithm is proposed for solving the regional OPF subproblems. The proposed approach has been examined and tested on the RTS-96 and IEEE 354-bus test systems. Good quality suboptimal solutions were obtained, proving the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. ©2009 IEEE.

This dissertation presents the competitive control methodologies for small-scale power system (SSPS). A SSPS is a collection of sources and loads that shares a common network which can be isolated during terrestrial disturbances. Micro-grids, naval ship electric power systems (NSEPS), aircraft power systems and telecommunication system power systems are typical examples of SSPS. The analysis and development of control systems for small-scale power systems (SSPS) lacks a defined slack bus. In addition, a change of a load or source will influence the real time system parameters of the system. Therefore, the control system should provide the required flexibility, to ensure operation as a single aggregated system. In most of the cases of a SSPS the sources and loads must be equipped with power electronic interfaces which can be modeled as a dynamic controllable quantity. The mathematical formulation of the micro-grid is carried out with the help of game theory, optimal control and fundamental theory of electrical power systems. Then the micro-grid can be viewed as a dynamical multi-objective optimization problem with nonlinear objectives and variables. Basically detailed analysis was done with optimal solutions with regards to start up transient modeling, bus selection modeling and level of communication within the micro-grids. In each approach a detail mathematical model is formed to observe the system response. The differential game theoretic approach was also used for modeling and optimization of startup transients. The startup transient controller was implemented with open loop, PI and feedback control methodologies. Then the hardware implementation was carried out to validate the theoretical results. The proposed game theoretic controller shows higher performances over traditional the PI controller during startup. In addition, the optimal transient surface is necessary while implementing the feedback controller for startup transient. Further, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical simulation. The bus selection and team communication was modeled with discrete and continuous game theory models. Although players have multiple choices, this controller is capable of choosing the optimum bus. Next the team communication structures are able to optimize the players’ Nash equilibrium point. All mathematical models are based on the local information of the load or source. As a result, these models are the keys to developing accurate distributed controllers.

Phylogenetic inference consist in the search of an evolutionary tree to explain the best way possible genealogical relationships of a set of species. Phylogenetic analysis has a large number of applications in areas such as biology, ecology, paleontology, etc. There are several criterias which has been defined in order to infer phylogenies, among which are the maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood. The first one tries to find the phylogenetic tree that minimizes the number of evolutionary steps needed to describe the evolutionary history among species, while the second tries to find the tree that has the highest probability of produce the observed data according to an evolutionary model. The search of a phylogenetic tree can be formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem, which aims to find trees which satisfy simultaneously (and as much as possible) both criteria of parsimony and likelihood. Due to the fact that these criteria are different there won't be a single optimal solution (a single tree), but a set of compromise solutions. The solutions of this set are called "Pareto Optimal". To find this solutions, evolutionary algorithms are being used with success nowadays.This algorithms are a family of techniques, which aren’t exact, inspired by the process of natural selection. They usually find great quality solutions in order to resolve convoluted optimization problems. The way this algorithms works is based on the handling of a set of trial solutions (trees in the phylogeny case) using operators, some of them exchanges information between solutions, simulating DNA crossing, and others apply aleatory modifications, simulating a mutation. The result of this algorithms is an approximation to the set of the “Pareto Optimal” which can be shown in a graph with in order that the expert in the problem (the biologist when we talk about inference) can choose the solution of the commitment which produces the higher interest. In the case of optimization multi-objective applied to phylogenetic inference, there is open source software tool, called MO-Phylogenetics, which is designed for the purpose of resolving inference problems with classic evolutionary algorithms and last generation algorithms. Electric vehicle (EV) batteries tend to have accelerated degradation due to high peak power and harsh charging/discharging cycles during acceleration and deceleration periods, particularly in urban driving conditions. An oversized energy storage system (ESS) can meet the high power demands; however, it suffers from increased size, volume and cost. In order to reduce the overall ESS size and extend battery cycle life, a battery-ultracapacitor (UC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS) has been considered as an alternative solution. In this work, we investigate the optimized configuration, design, and energy management of a battery-UC HESS. One of the major challenges in a HESS is to design an energy management controller for real-time implementation that can yield good power split performance. We present the methodologies and solutions to this problem in a battery-UC HESS with a DC-DC converter interfacing with the UC and the battery. In particular, a multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to optimize the power split in order to prolong the battery lifetime and to reduce the HESS power losses. This optimization problem is numerically solved for standard drive cycle datasets using Dynamic Programming (DP). Trained using the DP optimal results, an effective real-time implementation of the optimal power split is realized based on Neural Network (NN). This proposed online energy management controller is applied to a midsize EV model with a 360V/34kWh battery pack and a 270V/203Wh UC pack. The proposed online energy management controller effectively splits the load demand with high power efficiency and also effectively reduces the battery peak current. More importantly, a 38V-385Wh battery and a 16V-2.06Wh UC HESS hardware prototype and a real-time experiment platform has been developed. The real-time experiment results have successfully validated the real-time implementation feasibility and effectiveness of the real-time controller design for the battery-UC HESS. A battery State-of-Health (SoH) estimation model is developed as a performance metric to evaluate the battery cycle life extension effect. It is estimated that the proposed online energy management controller can extend the battery cycle life by over 60%.

This paper introduces a new version of the multiobjective Alliance Algorithm (MOAA) applied to the optimization of the NACA 0012 airfoil section, for minimization of drag and maximization of lift coefficients, based on eight section shape parameters. Two software packages are used: XFoil which evaluates each new candidate airfoil section in terms of its aerodynamic efficiency, and a Free-Form Deformation tool to manage the section geometry modifications. Two versions of the problem are formulated with different design variable bounds. The performance of this approach is compared, using two indicators and a statistical test, with that obtained using NSGA-II and multi-objective Tabu Search (MOTS) to guide the optimization. The results show that the MOAA outperforms MOTS and obtains comparable results with NSGA-II on the first problem, while in the other case NSGA-II is not able to find feasible solutions and the MOAA is able to outperform MOTS. © 2013 IEEE.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) have different characteristics compared to other mobile ad-hoc networks. The dynamic nature of the vehicles which act as routers and clients are connected with unreliable radio links and Routing becomes a complex problem. First we propose CO-GPSR (Cooperative GPSR), an extension of the traditional GPSR (Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing) which uses relay nodes which exploit radio path diversity in a vehicular network to increase routing performance. Next we formulate a Multi-objective decision making problem to select optimum packet relaying nodes to increase the routing performance further. We use cross layer information for the optimization process. We evaluate the routing performance more comprehensively using realistic vehicular traces and a Nakagami fading propagation model optimized for highway scenarios in VANETs. Our results show that when Multi-objective decision making is used for cross layer optimization of routing a 70% performance increment can be obtained for low vehicle densities on average, which is a two fold increase compared to the single criteria maximization approach.
