Reactions of [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)Br(CO)(2)(NCMe)(2)] with the bidentate nitrogen ligands 2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole (L1), 2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole (L2), N,N'-bis(2'-pyridinecarboxamido)-1,2-ethane (L3), and 2,2'-bisimidazole (L4) led to the new complexes [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)Br(CO)(2)(L)] (L = L1, 1; L2, 2; L4, 4) and [{Mo(eta(3)-C3H5) Br(CO)(2)}(2)(mu-L-3)] (3). The reaction of complexes 2 and 3 with Tl[CF3SO3] afforded [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CF3SO3)(CO)(2)(L2)] (2T) and [{Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CF3SO3)(CO)(2)}(2)(mu-L-3)] (3T). Complexes 3 and 2T were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the facial allyl/carbonyls arrangement and the formation of the axial isomer. In 2T, two molecules are assembled in a hydrogen bond dimer. The four complexes 1-4 were tested as precursors in the catalytic epoxidation of cyclooctene and styrene, in the presence of t-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), with moderate conversions and turnover frequencies for complexes 1-3 and very low ones for 4. The increasing number of N-H groups in the complexes seems to be responsible for the loss of catalytic activity, compared with other related systems. The cytotoxic activities of all the complexes were evaluated against HeLa cells. The results showed that compounds 1,2,4, and 2T exhibited significant activity, complexes 2 and 2T being particularly promising. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The metastable phase diagram of the BCC-based ordering equilibria in the Fe-Al-Mo system has been calculated via a truncated cluster expansion, through the combination of Full-Potential-Linear augmented Plane Wave (FP-LAPW) electronic structure calculations and of Cluster Variation Method (CVM) thermodynamic calculations in the irregular tetrahedron approximation. Four isothermal sections at 1750 K, 2000 K, 2250 K and 2500 K are calculated and correlated with recently published experimental data on the system. The results confirm that the critical temperature for the order-disorder equilibrium between Fe(3)Al-D0(3) and FeAl-B2 is increased by Mo additions, while the critical temperature for the FeAl-B2/A2 equilibrium is kept approximately invariant with increasing Mo contents. The stabilization of the Al-rich A2 phase in equilibrium with overstoichiometric B2-(Fe,Mo)Al is also consistent with the attribution of the A2 structure to the tau(2) phase, stable at high temperatures in overstoichiometric B2-FeAl. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of molybdenum on agronomic characteristics and yield of wheat in a no-till system. The experiment was carried out in a clayey Rhodic Hapludox, in Maripa, State of Parana, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with five replications. Treatments consisted of four doses of molybdenum (0, 13.8, 27.6 and 55.2 g ha(-1) Mo), divided into two foliar applications, the first at tillering (18 days after plant emergence) and the second at the boot stage (65 days after emergence). The foliar application of Mo up to a dose of 35 g ha-1 increased the number of spikes per square meter and yield of wheat; however, it had no effect on the agronomic characteristics of the crop in a no-till system.

Among the nutrients that are essential for the biological nitrogen fixation by soybean plants, molybdenum stands out for being a cofactor of the nitrate reductase, affecting enzymatic activity and, consequently, the nodulation process. The research had as objective to evaluate the effects of molybdenum application on soybean nodulation and nitrate reductase activity. The experiment was conduced in greenhouse, sowing soybean in 12 L pots, with two plants per plot. The treatments consisted of two application via (with the seeds and leaf dressing) and two molybdenum doses (12 and 24 g ha(-1) with the seeds; 30 and 60 g ha(-1) leaf dressing) in ammonium molybdate form, plus the control. The number and dry mass of nodules and nitrogen content in soybean leaves were evaluated. Samples of leaves for the evaluation of nitrate reductase activity were taken at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. It was concluded that soybean nodulation is affected by Mo dose and application via, resulting in higher number and weight of nodules when it is applied with the seeds. The enzymatic activity of the nitrate reductase is influenced by Mo fertilization and it is higher for leaf dressing with the double of the recommended dose.

In this work, vitreous samples were prepared in the binary system (100 - x)NaPO3-xMO(3) with M = Mo and W and x varying from 10 to 60. The transmittance properties in the UV, visible, and near-infrared were monitored as a function of MO3 concentration. In both cases, an increase in the amount of transition metal results in an intense and broad absorption band in the visible and near-infrared attributed to metal reduction under synthesis conditions. It was shown that this large absorption can be partially or totally removed using specific oxidizing agents or by improving synthesis parameters such as melting temperature or cooling rate of the melt. In addition, structural investigations by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggest that reduction only occurs when the metal cation is in octahedral geometry and that the transmittance improvement is not related with any structural changes. These results were explained in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium of redox species in the melt and allowed to obtain for the first time transparent and chemically stable glasses containing high concentrations of MO3 with transition metals in octahedral geometry inside the glass network.

Peanut response to lime has been associated to calcium (Ca) nutrition, but a higher nitrogen (N) uptake has been observed in limed plots probably due to an increase in molybdenum (Mo) availability. A two-year experiment was conducted to study the effects of Mo, cobalt (Co), and liming on peanut yields and N nutrition. Peanut seeds were treated with Mo and/or Co and grown in soil with base saturation about 13, 41, 57, and 71%. There was no effect of seed treatment with Co on peanut yields or N nutrition. Liming and Mo application increased N contents in the leaves. Nitrogen uptake was increased by Mo and liming in cv. Tatu and only by liming in cv. Tupa. Manganese (Mn) contents in the leaves were decreased by liming. The higher yields were observed when the Ca/Mn ratio in the leaves was above 25. In acid soils, low availability of Mo and Mn toxicity can impair N acquisition by peanut plants and decrease grain yields.

We have measured internal friction and frequency as a function of temperature in molybdenum containing oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution. These measurements were performed by a torsion pendulum operating in the temperature range of 300 K to 700 K with oscillation frequency about 1.0 Hz. The results showed the complex relaxation process identifying the stress induced ordering of oxygen and nitrogen atom around the molybdenum atoms of the metallic matrix.

The complexes (NH4)(2)[ MoO2( C2H2O3)(2)]center dot H2O, (NH4)(2)[MoO2(C8H6O3)(2)] and (NH4)(2) [MoO3(C4H4O6)]center dot H2O were prepared by reaction of MoO3 with glycolic, mandelic and tartaric acids, respectively. The complexes were characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy and X- ray diffraction. Crystals of the glycolate and tartarate complexes are orthorhombic and the mandelate complex is monoclinic. Elemental and thermal analysis data showed that the glycolate and tartarate complexes are monohydrated. Hydration water is not present in the structure of the mandelate complex. IR spectra showed COO- is involved in coordination as well as the oxygen atom of the deprotonated hydroxyl group of the alpha-carbon. The glycolate molybdenum complexes with general formula M-2[MoO2(C2H2O3)(2)]center dot nH(2)O, where M is an alkali metal and n=1 or 1/2, were also prepared and characterized. Aqueous solutions of the glycolate complex become blue and mandelate and tartarate complexes change to yellow or brown when exposed to UV- radiation.
