Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. The plastic deformation behavior and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in homogenized AZ31 Mg alloy was investigated in uniaxial compression in the temperature range between 150 and 400 degrees C with strain rates ranging from 10(-3) to 10(2) s(-1). Twinning was found to contribute significantly during the early stages of deformation. The onset of twinning was examined in detail by recourse to the examination of the appearance of first local maxima before peak strain in the stress-strain responses and the second derivative of stress with strain. High strain hardening rate was observed immediately after the onset of twinning and was found to increase with the Zener-Hollomon parameter. DRX was observed at temperatures above 250 degrees C whereas deformation at lower temperatures (< 250 degrees C) leads to extensive twinning at all the strain rates. At intermediate temperatures of 250-300 degrees C, plastic strains tend to localize near grain/twin boundaries, confining DRX only to these regions. Increase in the temperature promotes non-basal slip, which, in turn, leads to uniform deformation; DRX too becomes uniform. Deformation behavior in three different regimes of temperature is discussed. The dependence of critical stress for the onset of DRX and peak flow stress on temperature and strain rate are also described. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A sound weld was obtained between 2024-T3 Al alloy and AZ31B-O Mg alloy dissimilar metal plates of 5 mm thickness, at a rotational speed of 300 rev min(-1) and at a welding speed of 50 mm min(-1). One of the parameter studied was, the effect of interface offset variation, on the quality and properties of the welded samples and on the thickness of intermetallic layer formed in the welded samples. The intermetallic layer at the midst of the weld volume contains intermetallic compounds Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2. Highest tensile strength of 106.86 MPa, corresponding tensile joint efficiency of 44.52% and corresponding elongation 1.33% were obtained for the tensile sample, with interface offset of 0.66 mm from zero interface offset in retreating side and with approximate least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Dissimilar friction stir welded joint samples had failed completely in brittle fracture mode; the position of tensile fracture was located at the midst of intermetallic layer, which had maximum hardness and minimum ductility. The nano hardness values fluctuate in the weld nugget owing to dynamic recrystallization of alloy materials and formation of brittle intermetallic compounds of alloy materials in the weld nugget; maximum hardness of 10.74 GPa occurred for the sample with least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. A micromechanical approach is considered here to predict the deformation behaviour of Rheocast A356 (Al-Si-Mg) alloy. Two representative volume elements (RVEs) are modelled in the finite element (FE) framework. Two dimensional approximated microstructures are generated assuming elliptic grains, based on the grain size, shape factor and area fraction of the primary Al phase of the said alloy at different processing condition. Plastic instability is shown using stress and strain distribution between the Al rich primary and Si rich eutectic phases under different boundary conditions. Boundary conditions are applied on the approximated RVEs in such a manner, so that they represent the real life situation depending on their position on a cylindrical tensile test sample. FE analysis is carried out using commercial finite element code ABAQUS without specifying any damage or failure criteria. Micro-level in-homogeneity leads to incompatible deformation between the constituent phases of the rheocast alloy and steers plastic strain localisation. Plastic stain localised regions within the RVEs are predicted as the favourable sites for void nucleation. Subsequent growth of nucleated voids leads to final failure of the materials under investigation.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were prepared on AZ31B magnesium alloy using alkaline silicate electrolyte at different current densities (0.026, 0.046 and 0.067 A/cm(2)). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis of the coating revealed an irregular porous structure with cracked morphology. Compositional analysis carried out for MAO coating showed the presence of almost an equal amount of Mg and 0 (34 wt.%) apart from other elements such as F, Si and AI. The cross-sectional FESEM images clearly portrayed that the MAO coating was dense along with the presence of very few fine pores. The surface roughness (R-a) of the coatings increased with an increase in the current density. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies were carried out for both the bare and MAO coated AZ31B Mg alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution. The corrosion potential (E-corr) and corrosion current density (i(corr)) values obtained for the bare substrate were -1.49 V and 46 mu A/cm(2), respectively. The coating prepared at 0.046 A/cm(2) exhibited the lowest i(corr) value of 7.79 x 10(-10) A/cm(2) and highest polarization resistance (41.6 M Omega cm(2)) attesting to the better corrosion resistance of the coating compared to other samples. EIS results also indicated almost similar corrosion behavior for the MAO coatings. Mott-Schottky analysis showed n-type and p-type semiconductor behavior for the oxide layer present on the bare magnesium alloy and MAO coatings respectively. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Mg-5Al-0.3Mn-xCe (x = 0-3, wt.%) alloys were prepared by metal mould casting method. The microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results revealed that the main phases of as-cast Mg-5Al-0.3Mn alloy consist of alpha-Mg matrix and beta-Mg17Al12 phase. With the addition of Ce element, Al11Ce3 precipitates were formed and mainly aggregated along the grain boundaries. The amount of the Al11Ce3 precipitates increased with increasing addition of Ce, but the amount of beta-Mg17Al12 phase decreased. The highest tensile strength was obtained in Mg-5Al-0.3Mn-1.5Ce alloy. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation at room temperature are 203 MPa, 88 MPa and 20%, separately.

High-pressure die-cast (HPDC) Mg-4Al-4RE-0.4Mn (RE = La, Ce) magnesium alloys were prepared and their microstructures, tensile properties, and creep behavior have been investigated in detail. The results show that two binary Al-Ce phases, Al11Ce3 and Al2Ce, are formed mainly along grain boundaries in Mg-4Al-4Ce-0.4Mn alloy, while the phase composition of Mg-4Al-4La-0.4Mn alloy contains only alpha-Mg and Al11La3. The Al11La3 phase comprises large coverage of the grain boundary region and complicated morphologies. Compared with Al11Ce3 phase, the higher volume fraction and better thermal stability of Al11La3 have resulted in better-fortified grain boundaries of the Mg-4Al-4La-0.4Mn alloy. Thus higher tensile strength and creep resistance could be obtained in Mg-4Al-4La-0.4Mn alloy in comparison with that of Mg-4Al-4Ce-0.4Mn. Results of the theoretical calculation that the stability of Al11La3 is the highest among four Al-RE intermetallic compounds supports the experimental results further.

Spark discharge was the representative phenomenon of Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method distinguished from other electrochemical oxidation methods. Under the spark discharge treatment, characteristics of the anodic layer were significantly changed. To investigate the influences of the spark discharge, a piece of magnesium alloy AZ91D specimen was partly treated by MAO method in alkaline silicate solution. And the microstructure, element distributions as well as the surface potential distributions of the specimen were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) technique. As a result of intensive spark discharge treatment, porous external layer with dense internal layer were formed on Mg alloy surface. At the same time, the depositions of OH- and SiO32- ions were accelerated, which resulted in the enrichment of element oxygen and silicon at the spark discharge region. Moreover, due to the compact internal layer, the intensive spark discharge region exhibited more positive potentials with respect to other regions, which meant this region could restrain the ejection of electron and provide effective protection to the substrate. In addition, it was found that oxygen played a vital role in determining the intensity and size of sparks, and abundant oxygen resulted in intensive and larger sparks. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Superplastic behaviour of Mg-alloy AZ31 was investigated to clarify the possibility of its use for superplastic forming (SPF) and to accurately evaluate material characteristics under a biaxial stress by utilizing a multi-dome test. The material characteristics were evaluated under three different superplastic temperatures , 643, 673, and 703 K in order to determine the most suitable superplastic temperature. Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation of rectangular pan forming was carried out to predict the formability of the material into a complex shape. The superplastic material properties are used for the simulation of a rectangular pan. Finally, the simulation results are compared with the experimental results to determine the accuracy of the superplastic material characteristics. The experimental results revealed that the m values are greater than 0.3 under the three superplastic temperatures, which is indicative of superplasticity. The optimum superplastic temperature is 673 K, at which a maximum m value and no grain growth were observed. The results of the FEM simulation revealed that certain localized thinning occurred at the die entrance of the deformed rectangular pan due to the insufficient ductility of the material. The simulation results also showed that the optimum superplastic temperature of AZ31 is 673 K.

Major characteristics of Magnesium alloy are low density (= 1.8 g/cm3) and excellent recyclability; therefore Mg is considered as one of low environmental loading materials. The low-density materials, such as Mg, are suitable for the transportation system to reduce the emission of Co2, save energy resource and increase the safety for accidents like corrosions. In the place, cellular materials like aluminum foams are also low-density materials and can be controlled the stress-strain relation. Combination of Mg alloy and cellular materials, that is Mg cell, is one of the most excellent materials for transportation system, because of its ultra low density. safeties, and recycle ability. To make the Mg cellular materials. there are some problems to solve. One is how to make them uniformly to supply them as same perfonnance materials. One is how to make them inexpensively. Most of cellular materials are very expensive because of there are many processes or special fabrication system to make them. To solve these problems. we investigated the press cell materials. The press cell material consists sheets pressed as cell shape and wall. Therefore, it is very easy to make cellular materials and control validation of the performance of each foam materials. In this paper, we simulated compression tests of this new type of Mg alloy cellular materials under dynamic loading to investigate the relation between the compression speed and the compression behavior to show the shock absorbing capability of this new foam material. It is very important to understand their mechanical properties relatcd with cell shapes and wall to be applied widely.

The present study has examined the thermodynamics of MgAl2O4 and MgO formations in Al–Mg alloy/quartz (>99% crystalline silica) through differential thermal analysis (DTA). The formation of MgAl2O4 and MgO is detected as exothermic peaks in the heat flow curve and the reaction is confirmed by the Si dissolution peaks observed during the reheating of samples and SEM analysis of the reacted sample. The presence of MgAl2O4 and MgO is confirmed in the XRD analysis of the reacted sample. The study has enabled the production of nano sized MgAl2O4 and MgO crystals at the interface of Al–Mg alloy and quartz. The reaction between them is found to be influenced by the oxidation of Mg, which is reduced by increasing heating rates.

The present study analyzes the morphological transformations of reaction products i.e., MgO, MgAl2O4 occurring during the reaction between SiO2 and Al-Mg alloy in Al-Mg-SiO2 composite processed by the liquid metallurgy technique. Different phases of platelet and hexagonal morphologies are detected and their composition analysis by EDS has confirmed them as being transition phases existing between MgO, MgAl2O4 and Al2O3. This study has also revealed the gradual transformation of (i) MgO needles to octahedral MgAl2O4 through Mg-Al-Si-O and Mg-Al-O transition phases having platelet morphologies and (ii) MgAl2O4 to Al2O3 through hexagonal transition phases on holding of Al-5Mg-SiO2 and Al-1Mg-SiO2 composites respectively at 1023K. Fully developed α-Al2O3 crystals are not observed under the present experimental conditions, wherein the Mg content is well above the equilibrium Mg content required for the formation of stable Al2O3 (<0.05 wt. %).

An electrochemical approach to the formation of a protective surface film on Mg alloys immersed in the ionic liquid (IL), trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium–bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate, was investigated in this work. Initially, cyclic voltammetry was used with the Mg alloy being cycled from OCP to more anodic potentials. EIS data indicate that, under these circumstances, an optimum level of protection was achieved at intermediate potentials (e.g., 0 or 0.25 V versus Ag/AgCl). In the second part of this paper, a small constant bias was applied to the Mg alloy immersed in the IL for extended periods using a novel cell design. This electrochemical cell allowed us to monitor in situ surface film formation on the metal surface as well as the subsequent corrosion behaviour of the metal in a corrosive medium. This apparatus was used to investigate the evolution of the surface film on an AZ31 magnesium alloy under a potential bias (between ±100 mV versus open circuit) applied for over 24 h, and the film evolution was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A film resistance was determined from the EIS data and it was shown that this increased substantially during the first few hours (independent of the bias potential used) with a subsequent decrease upon longer exposure of the surface to the IL. Preliminary characterization of the film formed on the Mg alloy surface using ToF-SIMS indicates that a multilayer surface exists with a phosphorous rich outer layer and a native oxide/hydroxide film underlying this. The corrosion performance of a treated AZ31 specimen when exposed to 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solution showed considerable improvement, consistent with electrochemical data.

Novel Mg–Zr–Sr alloys have recently been developed for use as biodegradable implant materials. The Mg–Zr–Sr alloys were prepared by diluting Mg–Zr and Mg–Sr master alloys with pure Mg. The impact of Zr and Sr on the mechanical and biological properties has been thoroughly examined. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the alloys were characterized using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and compressive tests. The corrosion resistance was evaluated by electrochemical analysis and hydrogen evolution measurement. The in vitro biocompatibility was assessed using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells and MTS and haemolysis tests. In vivo bone formation and biodegradability were studied in a rabbit model. The results indicated that both Zr and Sr are excellent candidates for Mg alloying elements in manufacturing biodegradable Mg alloy implants. Zr addition refined the grain size, improved the ductility, smoothed the grain boundaries and enhanced the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. Sr addition led to an increase in compressive strength, better in vitro biocompatibility, and significantly higher bone formation in vivo. This study demonstrated that Mg–xZr–ySr alloys with x and y ⩽5 wt.% would make excellent biodegradable implant materials for load-bearing applications.

This paper reports on the corrosion of Mg alloy AZ31 in simulated body fluid (SBF) using static immersion tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A preliminary study on the effect of flowing SBF on the corrosion behaviour of AZ31 has also been carried out. Low toxicity ionic liquids (ILs) trimethyl(butyl)phosphonium diphenyl phosphate P1444DPP and trihexyl(tetradecyl)-phosphonium bis-2,4,4trimethylpentyl-phosphinate [P66614][ i(C8) 2PO2] have been used to provide corrosion protection for AZ31 in SBF. Time dependent immersion tests indicate that under static conditions, AZ31 suffers severe localised corrosion in SBF, with pits developing predominantly beside the Al-Mn intermetallic phase in the α matrix. At longer immersion times, the corrosion product eventually precipitates and covers the entire specimen surface. When exposed to SBF under flowing conditions with a shear stress of 0·88 Pa, more uniform corrosion was observed. The optical profilometry results and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis suggest that both P
1444DPP and [P66614][i(C8)2PO2] pretreatments can increase the corrosion resistance of AZ31 in SBF, in particular by decreasing the number of deeper pits found on the alloy surface. Cytotoxic test shows that the presence of the ILs P
1444DPP and [P66614][i(C8)2PO2] in cell culture media slightly inhibits the growth of human coronary artery endothelial cells in comparison with the good cell viability around the treated specimen. A pretreatment with IL is used in order to improve the corrosion resistance of this alloy in SBF. © 2012 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
