The exceptional advance of information technology and computer application to the mineral sector has allowed the automation of several processes of the mineral value chain. ERP systems (Enterprise Resource Planning) provided the platform for the efficient integration of all support activities of the mineral value chain. Despite all advances gathered with the application of computers, it was not possible to date, to effectively integrate the primary activities of the mineral value chain. The main reason for that are the uncertainties present in the productive process, which are intrinsic to the business, and the difficulty to quantify and qualify the benefits obtained with this integration due to the lack of a clear definition of the key performance indicators (KPIs). This work presents an analysis of the ERP systems application in Brazilian mining, identifies the KPIs of some of the most important Brazilian mining companies, and discusses the importance of mapping and measuring these indicators for the effective. management of the mining business.

We investigated in this work the stability of the Higher Manganese Silicides (HMS). Several alloys in the composition range 62-66 at.% Si were prepared from their constitutive elements by arc-melting. The prepared alloys were then analysed by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements and Electron Probe Micro-Analyser (EPMA). The whole results allow us to suggest that whatever the composition is, only Mn(27)Si(47) is stable for the temperatures 500 degrees C and 800 degrees C. At higher temperatures, the studied samples undergo two phase transformations which consecutively lead to the formation of Mn(15)Si(26) and Mn(11)Si(19). Mn(4)Si(7) was never evidenced in the present work. It is shown for the first time in this work that Mn(27)Si(47) is the only HMS stable phase at room temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents the results of a study on carbothermal reduction of iron ore made under the microwave field in equipment specially developed for this purpose. The equipment allows the control of radiated and reflected microwave power, and therefore measures the microwave energy actually applied to the load in the reduction process. It also allows performing energy balances and determining the reaction rate with high levels of confidence by simultaneously measuring temperature and mass of the material upon reduction with high reproducibility. We used a microwave generator of 2.45?GHz with variable power up to 3000?W. Self-reducing pellets under argon atmosphere, containing iron ore and petroleum coke, with 3.5?g of mass and 15?mm of diameter were declined. We obtained the kinetic curves of reduction of iron ore and of energy consumption to the process in the maximum electric field, in the maximum magnetic field and at different values of power/mass. The data allow analyzing how the microwave energy was actually consumed in the reduction of ore.

In recent years, different beta titanium alloys have been developed for biomedical applications with a combination of mechanical properties including a low Young's modulus, high strength, fatigue resistance and good ductility with excellent corrosion resistance. From this perspective, a new metastable beta titanium Ti-12Mo-3Nb alloy was developed with the replacement of both vanadium and aluminum from the traditional Ti-6Al-4V alloy. This paper presents the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the Ti-12Mo-3Nb alloy heat-treated at 950 degrees C for 1 h. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction and by scanning electron microscopy. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature. Corrosion tests were performed using Ringer's solution at 25 degrees C. The results showed that this alloy could potentially be used for biomedical purposes due to its good mechanical properties and spontaneous passivation. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bi3.25La0.75-xErxTi3O12 and Bi3.25La0.75Ti3-xErxO12-delta ceramics were prepared and studied in this work in terms of dopant-induced phase and microstructure development as well as dielectric response. The results show that introduction of Er3+ tends to reduce the materials' sintering temperature and average grain size. Moreover, it was noted that in these systems the substitution site of this dopant is controlled by valence state and ionic radii mismatch effects. In particular, even when a nominal substitution of Ti4+ is conceived, here it is found that Er3+ also incorporates at the (Bi,La)(3+) sites. These and other interesting concluding remarks from this work, including Er3+ tolerance, were possible only after comparing, especially, the X-ray diffraction results and the intrinsic ferroelectric characteristics extracted from the dielectric measurements. Frequency upconversion (UC) properties of Tm3+ doped TeO2-ZnO glasses containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. Infrared-to-visible and infrared-to-infrared UC processes associated to the Tm3+ ions were studied by exciting the samples with a cw 1050 nm ytterbium laser. The luminescence intensity as a function of laser intensity was also measured using a pulsed 1047 nm Nd3+:YVO laser in order to determine the number of photons participating in the UC processes. Enhancement of the UC signals for samples heat-treated during various time intervals is attributed to the growth of the local field in the vicinity of the NPs. PL enhancement by one-order of magnitude was observed in the whole spectrum of the samples heat-treated during 48 h. On the other hand PL quenching was observed for the samples heat-treated more than 48 h. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two Zircaloy 4-Ta alloys (14 and 55 wt.% Ta) were produced by arc-melting. The alloys were hot-rolled at 900 degrees C and heat-treated under argon atmosphere for 100 h at 700 degrees C. The alloys were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The microstructure of both rolled and heat-treated alloys is constituted of (beta Zr,Ta)-II Ta-rich precipitates dispersed in a (alpha Zr) matrix. Corrosion tests performed in boiling concentrated H2SO4 solutions showed that the Zircaloy 4-Ta alloys are more corrosion resistant than Zircaloy 4 and that the corrosion resistance increases with increasing Ta content. The aim of this study was to investigate the bauxite scrubbing process on samples from Miltonia 3, a Vale operation in the State of Para, Brazil. The experimental program included the design of a standard laboratory test, from which parameters were derived for predicting the operation of a scrubber in steady state conditions. Three main variables were selected for the laboratory experimental program using the factorial design technique. These were load fraction, residence time and rotation speed. The amount of fines was determined through screening both the feed and the product of the scrubbing test. The former was considered to be a characteristic material, while the second was the dependent variable, i.e. the result of the scrubbing process. According to experiments, the load fraction was the most important variable for the scrubbing process.

In this work, the effect of the indentation load on the results of hardness and fracture toughness, determined by Vickers micro-hardness measurements, of some glasses and glass-ceramics has been investigated. Furthermore, in order to verify the effect of crystallinity on the results, glasses of composition 52.75 wt.% 3CaO center dot P2O5, 30 wt.% SiO2 and 17.25 wt.% MgO were fused at 1600 degrees C for 4 h and annealed at 700 degrees C for 2h, and further heat-treated at 700, 775, 800 and 900 degrees C for 4h. The obtained materials were analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction, HRXRD, to determine the crystallization degree in function of the heat-treatment temperature. The hardness of the different specimens was determined by Vickers' micro-hardness measurements under various loads. It has been observed that with increasing crystallization of the materials their hardness increased. Furthermore, it has been possible to verify the so-called indentation size effect (ISE), i.e. hardness decreases as the indentation depth, under higher loads, increases. This effect has been more pronounced in the glass-ceramic samples. Fracture toughness has been determined by the crack length induced by the Vickers indentations and relating them to the applied loads. Glass materials presented a fracture pattern with characteristics of cleavage, forming cracks of the half-penny shaped type, while the glass-ceramic materials exhibited crack bridging effects and Palmqvist type cracks. The distribution of delta ferrite fraction was measured with the magnetic method in specimens of different stainless steel compositions cast by the investment casting (lost wax) process. Ferrite fraction measurements published in the literature for stainless steel cast samples were added to the present work data, enabling an extensive analysis about practical methods to calculate delta ferrite fractions in stainless steel castings. Nineteen different versions of practical methods were formed using Schaeffler, DeLong, and Siewert diagrams and the nickel and chromium equivalent indexes suggested by several authors. These methods were evaluated by a detailed statistical analysis, showing that the Siewert diagram, including its equivalent indexes and iso-ferrite lines, gives the lowest relative errors between calculated and measured delta ferrite fractions. Although originally created for stainless steel welds, this diagram gives relative errors lower than those for the current ASTM standard method (800/A 800M-01), developed to predict ferrite fractions in stainless steel castings. Practical methods originated from a combination of different chromium/nickel equivalent indexes and the iso-ferrite lines from Schaeffler diagram give the lowest relative errors when compared with combinations using other iso-ferrite line diagrams. For the samples cast in the present work, an increase in cooling rate from 0.78 to 2.7 K/s caused a decrease in the delta ferrite fraction, but a statistical hypothesis test revealed that this effect is significant in only 50% of the samples that have ferrite in their microstructures.

This paper presents the classification of 110 copper ore samples from Sossego Mine, based on X-ray diffraction and cluster analysis. The comparison based on the position and the intensity of the diffracted peaks allowed the distinction of seven ore types, whose differences refer to the proportion of major minerals: quartz, feldspar, actinolite, iron oxides, mica and chlorite. There was a strong correlation between the grouping and the location of the samples in Sequeirinho and Sossego orebodies. This relationship is due to different types and intensities of hydrothermal alteration prevailing in each body, which reflect the mineralogical composition and thus the X-ray diffractograms of samples.

High-purity niobium powders can be obtained from the well-known hydride-dehydride (HDH) process. The aim of this work was the investigation of the structural phase transition of the niobium hydride to niobium metal as function of temperature, heating rate and time. The niobium powder used in this work was obtained by high-temperature hydriding of niobium machining chips followed by conventional ball milling and sieving. X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out in vacuum using a high-temperature chamber coupled to an X-ray diffractometer. During the dehydriding process, it is possible to follow the phase transition from niobium hydride to niobium metal starting at about 380 degrees C for a heating rate of 20 degrees C/min. The heating rate was found to be an important parameter, since complete dehydriding was obtained at 490 degrees C for a heating rate of 20 degrees C/min. The higher dehydriding rate was found at 500 degrees C. Results contribute to a better understanding of the kinetics of thermal decomposition of niobium hydride to niobium metal. Mining operations around the world make extensive use of blasthole sampling for short-term planning, which has two undisputed advantages: (1) blastholes are closely spaced providing relatively high sampling density per ton, and (2) there is no additional cost since the blastholes must be drilled anyway. However, blasthole sampling usually presents poor sampling precision, and the inconstant sampling bias caused by particle size and density segregation is an even more serious problem, generally precluding representativeness. One of the main causes of this bias is a highly varying loss of fines, which can lead to both under- and over-estimation of grade depending on the ore type and the gangue. This study validates a new, modified sectorial sampler, designed to reduce the loss of fines and thereby increase sampling accuracy for narrow-diameter blasthole sampling. First results show a significantly improved estimation of gold grade as well as the minimization of the loss of fines.

Removal of Mg from aluminum scraps, known as demagging, has been widely applied in the, aluminum industry. This work discusses bubble-formation theories and magnesium kinetic removal from aluminum scraps using chlorine and inert gas fluxing. The interfacial area of the bubbles and residence time were estimated using a mathematical model. To inject gaseous chlorine, three types of nozzles were used with varying internal diameter. In addition, a porous plug, as well as varying input chlorine flow and concentration were used. The use of lower chlorine concentration improves efficiency because the interfacial tension is reduced therefore, more and smaller bubbles are formed. The model proposed herein is consistent with the experimental data. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2011256]
