Skin biothermomechanics is highly interdisciplinary, involving bioheat transfer, burn damage, biomechanics, and physiology. Characterization of the thermomechanical behavior of skin tissue is of great importance and can contribute to a variety of medical applications. However, few quantitative studies have been conducted on the thermally-dependent mechanical properties of skin tissue. The aim of the present study is to experimentally examine the thermally-induced change in the relaxation behavior of skin tissue in both hyperthermal and hypothermic ranges. The results show that temperature has great influence on the stress-relaxation behavior of skin tissue under both hyperthermal and hypothermic temperatures; the quantitative relationship that has been found between temperature and the viscoelastic parameter (the elastic fraction or fractional energy dissipation) was temperature dependent, with greatest dissipation at high temperature levels.

At the fishing season, in 2000, samples of species persian sturgeon (A. persicus), Severjuga (A. stellatus) and Mullet (L. aurata), were caught from the southern coasts of Caspian Sea and were freezes and preserved in the cold storage for one year They have also become biometery. The tissue's fillet were identified in order to determined the Fatty Acids. This was done during one year, frequently, fresh, two weeks after freezing and then monthly, respectively. So, after the extraction of lipids from the tissues and methylation, was injected to the gas-liquid Chromatography. After calibration, identified Fatty Acids were compared with standards according to their Retention Times. Peroxid value, lipid content and humidity were controlled. The unsaturated Fatty acids had The most amount, and a plenty of Polyunsaturated Fatty acids (PUFA) were observed, so that linoleic (C18:2), a-linolenic (C18:3), Arashidonic (C20:4), EPA (C20:5) and DHA (C22:6) Fatty acids had high amounts. The w-3, PUFA were more in comparison with w-6. The effects of freezing and cold storing on the fish fatty acids , were evaluated by the statistical tests , like SPSS, Tukey, Homogenous and Anova, and showed that in some species, a group of Fatty acids, specially PUFA, had some variation. The peroxide value that indicates the lipid deterioration, increased during toring. So, the best term if preserving in the cold storage, were determined and their Nutrition value and Medical applications due to their consumption were investigated.

This paper investigates the development of miniature McKibben actuators. Due to their compliancy, high actuation force, and precision, these actuators are on the one hand interesting for medical applications such as prostheses and instruments for surgery and on the other hand for industrial applications such as for assembly robots. During this research, pneumatic McKibben actuators have been miniaturized to an outside diameter of 1.5 mm and a length ranging from 22 mm to 62 mm. These actuators are able to achieve forces of 6 N and strains up to about 15% at a supply pressure of 1 MPa. The maximal actuation speed of the actuators measured during this research is more than 350 mm/s. Further, positioning experiments with a laser interferometer and a PI controller revealed that these actuators are able to achieve sub-micron positioning resolution. © 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V. There is growing interest in the use of 242mAm as a nuclear fuel. Because of its very high thermal fission cross section and its large number of neutrons released per fission, it can be used for various unique applications, such as space propulsion, medical applications, and compact energy sources. Since the thermal absorption cross section of 242mAm is very high, the best way to obtain 242mAm is by the capture of fast or epithermal neutrons in 241Am. However, fast spectrum reactors are not readily available. In this paper, we explore the possibility of producing 242mAm in existing pressurized water reactors (PWRs) with minimal interference in reactor performance. As suggested in previous studies on the subject, the 242mAm breeding targets are shielded with strong thermal absorbers in order to suppress the thermal neutron flux that causes 242mAm destruction. Since 242mAm enrichment within the Am target mainly depends on the neutron energy distribution, which in turn depends on the Am target thickness and on the neutron filter cutoff energy (thermal absorber type), this unique Am target design was developed. In our study, Cd, Sm, and Gd were considered as thermal neutron filters, as suggested by Cesana et al. The most favorable results were obtained by irradiating Am targets covered either with Gd or Cd. In these cases, up to 8.65% enrichment of 242mAm is obtained after 4.5 yr (three successive PWR fuel cycles) of irradiation. It was also found that significant quantities [up to 1.3 kg/GW (electric)-yr] of 242mAm can be obtained in PWR reactors without notable interference with reactor performance. However, in order to maintain the original fuel cycle length, the enrichment of the driver (UO2) fuel must be increased by ∼1%, raised from the conventional 4.5 to 5.5%, depending on the thermal neutron filter used. The most important reactivity feedback coefficients for fuel assemblies containing the 242mAm breeding targets were evaluated and found to be close to those of a standard PWR. Another product of neutron capture in the 241Am reaction is 238Pu. It was found that in a typical 1000 MW (electric) PWR core with one-third of the fuel assemblies containing 241Am targets, up to 15.1 kg of 238Pu enriched to 80% can be produced per year.

Biomimetic micro-swimmers can be used for various medical applications, such as targeted drug delivery and micro-object (e.g. biological cells) manipulation, in lab-on-a-chip devices. Bacteria swim using a bundle of flagella (flexible hair-like structures) that form a rotating cork-screw of chiral shape. To mimic bacterial swimming, we employ a computational approach to design a bacterial (chirality-induced) swimmer whose chiral shape and rotational velocity can be controlled by an external magnetic field. In our model, we numerically solve the coupled governing equations that describe the system dynamics (i.e. solid mechanics, fluid dynamics and magnetostatics). We explore the swimming response as a function of the characteristic dimensionless parameters and put special emphasis on controlling the swimming direction. Our results provide fundamental physical insight on the chirality-induced propulsion, and it provides guidelines for the design of magnetic bi-directional micro-swimmers. © 2013 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. Covalent surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes with polypeptides is promising for possible medical applications. This work presents a graft-from approach to perform the polypeptide modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWTNs). The raw MWNTs are first amine-functionalized. The amine-functionalized MWNTs are then used as the initiator to initiate the ring-opening polymerization of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (BLG- NCA), to results in the polypeptide-grafted MWNTs. FT-IR, XPS, and TGA data demonstrate that the functionalization is successful. The TEM images of the products show that the thickness of the polypeptide shell of the PBLG-MWNT is about 4.5-22 nm. Using the facile route developed here, carbon nanotubes functionalized with other types of polypeptides can be easily fabricated using the corresponding NCAs.

A series of polylactide polyurethanes (PLAUs) were synthesized from poly(L-lactide) diols, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Their thermal and mechanical properties and shape-memory behavior were studied by infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXID), tensile testing, and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA). The T(g)s of these polymers were in the range of 33-53 degrees C, and influenced by the Mn of the PLA diol and the ratio of the soft-segment to the hard-segment. These materials can restore their shapes almost completely after 150% elongation or twofold compression. By changing the M-n of the PLA diol and the ratio of the hard-to-soft-segment, their Ts and shape-recovery temperatures can be adjusted to the neighborhood of the body temperature. Therefore, these PLAUs are expected to find practical medical applications.

Embedded wireless sensor network (WSN) systems have been developed and used in a wide variety of applications such as local automatic environmental monitoring; medical applications analysing aspects of fitness and health energy metering and management in the built environment as well as traffic pattern analysis and control applications. While the purpose and functions of embedded wireless sensor networks have a myriad of applications and possibilities in the future, a particular implementation of these ambient sensors is in the area of wearable electronics incorporated into body area networks and everyday garments. Some of these systems will incorporate inertial sensing devices and other physical and physiological sensors with a particular focus on the application areas of athlete performance monitoring and e-health. Some of the important physical requirements for wearable antennas are that they are light-weight, small and robust and should also use materials that are compatible with a standard manufacturing process such as flexible polyimide or fr4 material where low cost consumer market oriented products are being produced. The substrate material is required to be low loss and flexible and often necessitates the use of thin dielectric and metallization layers. This paper describes the development of such a wearable, flexible antenna system for ISM band wearable wireless sensor networks. The material selected for the development of the wearable system in question is DE104i characterized by a dielectric constant of 3.8 and a loss tangent of 0.02. The antenna feed line is a 50 Ohm microstrip topology suitable for use with standard, high-performance and low-cost SMA-type RF connector technologies, widely used for these types of applications. The desired centre frequency is aimed at the 2.4GHz ISM band to be compatible with IEEE 802.15.4 Zigbee communication protocols and the Bluetooth standard which operate in this band.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a medical technology that is used in the monitoring of the brain and in the diagnosis of many neurological illnesses. Although coarse in its precision, the EEG is a non-invasive tool that requires minimal set-up times, and is suitably unobtrusive and mobile to allow continuous monitoring of the patient, either in clinical or domestic environments. Consequently, the EEG is the current tool-of-choice with which to continuously monitor the brain where temporal resolution, ease-of- use and mobility are important. Traditionally, EEG data are examined by a trained clinician who identifies neurological events of interest. However, recent advances in signal processing and machine learning techniques have allowed the automated detection of neurological events for many medical applications. In doing so, the burden of work on the clinician has been significantly reduced, improving the response time to illness, and allowing the relevant medical treatment to be administered within minutes rather than hours. However, as typical EEG signals are of the order of microvolts (μV ), contamination by signals arising from sources other than the brain is frequent. These extra-cerebral sources, known as artefacts, can significantly distort the EEG signal, making its interpretation difficult, and can dramatically disimprove automatic neurological event detection classification performance. This thesis therefore, contributes to the further improvement of auto- mated neurological event detection systems, by identifying some of the major obstacles in deploying these EEG systems in ambulatory and clinical environments so that the EEG technologies can emerge from the laboratory towards real-world settings, where they can have a real-impact on the lives of patients. In this context, the thesis tackles three major problems in EEG monitoring, namely: (i) the problem of head-movement artefacts in ambulatory EEG, (ii) the high numbers of false detections in state-of-the-art, automated, epileptiform activity detection systems and (iii) false detections in state-of-the-art, automated neonatal seizure detection systems. To accomplish this, the thesis employs a wide range of statistical, signal processing and machine learning techniques drawn from mathematics, engineering and computer science. The first body of work outlined in this thesis proposes a system to automatically detect head-movement artefacts in ambulatory EEG and utilises supervised machine learning classifiers to do so. The resulting head-movement artefact detection system is the first of its kind and offers accurate detection of head-movement artefacts in ambulatory EEG. Subsequently, addtional physiological signals, in the form of gyroscopes, are used to detect head-movements and in doing so, bring additional information to the head- movement artefact detection task. A framework for combining EEG and gyroscope signals is then developed, offering improved head-movement arte- fact detection. The artefact detection methods developed for ambulatory EEG are subsequently adapted for use in an automated epileptiform activity detection system. Information from support vector machines classifiers used to detect epileptiform activity is fused with information from artefact-specific detection classifiers in order to significantly reduce the number of false detections in the epileptiform activity detection system. By this means, epileptiform activity detection which compares favourably with other state-of-the-art systems is achieved. Finally, the problem of false detections in automated neonatal seizure detection is approached in an alternative manner; blind source separation techniques, complimented with information from additional physiological signals are used to remove respiration artefact from the EEG. In utilising these methods, some encouraging advances have been made in detecting and removing respiration artefacts from the neonatal EEG, and in doing so, the performance of the underlying diagnostic technology is improved, bringing its deployment in the real-world, clinical domain one step closer.
