Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.

Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA) and 1,6-hexane diol diacrylate (HDDA) at different weight ratios were synthesized. Temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) was used to determine whether the formation resulted in a copolymer or interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). These polymers are used as binders for microstereolithography (MSL) based ceramic microfabrication. The kinetics of thermal degradation of these polymers are important to optimize the debinding process for fabricating 3D shaped ceramic objects by MSL based rapid prototyping technique. Therefore, thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation of these IPNs have been studied by dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetry (TGA). Non-isothermal model-free kinetic methods have been adopted (isoconversional differential and KAS) to calculate the apparent activation energy (E a) as a function of conversion (α) in N 2 and air. The degradation of these polymers in N 2 atmosphere occurs via two mechanisms. Chain end scission plays a dominant role at lower temperature while the kinetics is governed by random chain scission at higher temperature. Oxidative degradation shows multiple degradation steps having higher activation energy than in N 2. Isothermal degradation was also carried out to predict the reaction model which is found to be decelerating. It was shown that the degradation of PTMPTA follows a contracting sphere reaction model in N 2. However, as the HDDA content increases in the IPNs, the degradation reaction follows Avrami-Erofeev model and diffusion governed mechanisms. The intermediate IPN compositions show both type of mechanism. Based on the above study, debinding strategy for MSL based microfabricated ceramic structure has been proposed. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The aim of this study was to prepare a highly active immobilized titania/silica photocatalyst and to test its performance in situ toward degradation of toluene as one of the major toxic indoor contaminants. In this work, two different titania layers immobilized on Al sheets were synthesized via low temperature sol-gel method employing presynthesized highly active titania powders (Degussa P25 and Millennium PC500, mass ratio 1:1): (a) with a silica/titania binder and a protective layer and (b) without the binder. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The in situ photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene was selected as a probe reaction to test photocatalytic activity and to verify the potential application of these materials for air remediation. Results show that nontransparent highly photocatalytically active coatings based on the silica/titania binder and homogeneously dispersed TiO2 powders were obtained on the Al sheets. The crystalline structure of titania was not altered upon addition of the binder, which also prevented inhomogeneous agglomeration of particles on the photocatalyst surface. The photoactivity results indicate that the adsorption properties and photocatalytic activity of immobilized photocatalysts with the silica/titania binder and an underlying protective layer were very effective and additionally, they exhibited considerably improved adhesion and uniformity. We present a new highly photocatalytically active immobilized catalyst on a convenient metallic support, which has a potential application in an air cleaning device.

Titania (TiO2) nano-photocatalysts, with different phases, prepared using a modified sol-gel process were employed in the degradation of rhodamine at 10 mg L-1 concentration. The degradation efficiency of these nano-photocatalysts was compared to that of commercial Degussa P25 titania. It was found that the nanocatalysts calcined at 450 degrees C and the Degussa P25 titania had similar photoreactivity profiles. The commercial Degussa P25 nanocatalysts had an overall high apparent rate constant of (K-app) of 0.023 min(-1). The other nanocatalyst had the following rate constants: 0.017, 0.0089, 0.003 and 0.0024 min(-1) for 450, 500, 550 and 600 degrees C calcined catalysts, respectively. This could be attributed to the phase of the titania as the anatase phase is highly photoactive than the other phases. Furthermore, characterisation by differential scanning calorimetry showed the transformation of titania from amorphous to anatase and finally to rutile phase. SEM and TEM characterisations were used to study the surface morphology and internal structure of the nanoparticles. BET results show that as the temperature of calcinations was raised, the surface area reduced marginally. X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the different phases of titania. This study has led to a conclusion that the anatase phase of the titania is the most photoactive nanocatalyst. It also had the highest apparent rate constant of 0.017 min(-1), which is similar to that of the commercial titania.

Metal-ion (Ag, Co, Ni, and Pd) doped TiO2 nanocatalysts were successfully embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The CCA-embedded catalysts were crystalline and had a high surface area compared to the free metal-ion doped titania nanocatalysts while they still retained the anatase phase of the core TiO2. These catalysts were photocatalytically active under solar light irradiation. Rhodamine B was used as a model pollutant and the reactivity followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The reaction rate of the CCA-supported catalysts was Pd > Ag > Co > Ni. Among the ratios of the CCA:catalyst used, it was found that the 1:1 ratio had the fastest reaction rate, followed by the 1:2 ratio, while the 2:1 ratio exhibited the lowest reaction rate. The CCA/metal-ion doped titania were found to have photocatalytic activities comparable with those of CCA-supported titania.

Metal-doped anatase nanosized titania photocatalysts were successfully synthesized using a sal gel process. Different amounts of the dopants (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0%) of the metals (Ag, Ni, Co and Pd) were utilized. The UV-Vis spectra (solid state diffuse reflectance spectra) of the doped nanoparticles exhibited a red shift in the absorption edge as a result of metal doping. The metal-doped nanoparticles were investigated for their photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation using Rhodamine B (Rh B) as a control pollutant. The results obtained indicate that the metal-doped titania had the highest activity at 0.4% metal loading. The kinetic models revealed that the photodegradation of Rh B followed a pseudo first order reaction. From ion chromatography (IC) analysis the degradation by-products Rhodamine B fragments were found to be acetate, chloride, nitrite, carbonate and nitrate ions.

A composite electrode made up of exfoliated graphite (EG) and diamond was prepared for the electrochemical oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The SEM images of the EG-diamond material showed that diamond powders were dispersed on the surface of EG materials. The N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm of EG-diamond material resulted in a poor adsorption capability due to the insertion of diamond powders into the porous matrix of EG. Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of characteristic sp(3) bands of diamond confirming good interaction of diamond with EG. Electrochemical characterisation of EG-diamond in 0.1 M Na2SO4 resulted in an enhanced working potential window. The EG-diamond electrode was employed for the electrochemical oxidation of trichloroethylene (0.2 mM) in a Na2SO4 supporting electrolyte. The EG-diamond, in comparison to the pristine EG electrode, exhibited a higher removal efficiency of 94% (EG was 57%) and faster degradation kinetics of 25.3 x 10(-3) min(-1) showing pseudo first order kinetic behaviour. Under the optimised conditions, 73% total organic content (TOC) removal was achieved after 4 h of electrolysis. The degradation of TCE was also monitored with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was identified as a major intermediate product during the electrochemical oxidation of TCE. The electrochemical degradation of TCE at the EG-diamond electrode represents a cost effective method due to the ease of preparation of EG-diamond composite material without the necessity of diamond activation which is normally achieved through doping.

Recently, research on polymer has drawn much attention mainly due to the ever increasing application of these polymeric materials in several areas such as food packaging industry, agricultural industry and biomedical research. However, increasing industrial use of polymers has led to the environmentally critical issue of waste disposal. Further, the successful implication of polymeric materials in biomedical applications depends on the biodegradability of the concerned polymer. Various enzymes play an important role in the biodegradation of polymers. The present review describes the enzyme mediated biodegradation of various polymers including synthetic, natural and blends of these materials. Detailed examples of enzymatic degradation of polymers are illustrated from current scientific literature with the discussion on various factors that can influence the degradation. In addition, different techniques that are generally applied to assess the degradation process as well as degradation products have been described. Finally, a special emphasis is given to the investigation of the kinetics of polymer degradation by enzymes.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ag) nanoparticles were prepared using nitrates of zinc and silver as oxidizers and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a fuel via low-temperature combustion synthesis (LCS) at 500 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates the presence of silver in the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum indicates the presence of Ag-Zn-O stretching vibration at 510 cm(-1). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images shows that the average particle size of ZnO and ZnO:Ag nanoparticles were found to be 58 nm and 52 nm, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data clearly indicates the presence of Ag in ZnO crystal lattice. The above characterization techniques indicate that the incorporation of silver affects the structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles exhibited 3% higher photocatalytic efficiency than pure ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles show better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of trypan blue (TrB) compared to undoped ZnO nanoparticles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The enzymatic biodegradation of polydioxanone (PDO) in trifluoroethanol (TFE) at various temperatures (25-55 degrees C) was studied with two different types of lipases, namely immobilized enzyme Novozym 435 and free enzyme porcine pancreas lipase. The biodegradation process was monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Both enzymes showed the optimum activity at 37 degrees C and Novozym 435 exhibited better thermal stability over the experimental temperature range. A continuous distribution kinetic model was employed to describe the biodegradation process and the model was used to fit the experimental data satisfactorily and obtain kinetic parameters. In this study, two different types of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) namely pristine (p-MWNTs) and amine functionalized (a-MWNTs) were melt-mixed with polycaprolactone (PCL) to develop biodegradable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. The bulk electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was assessed using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and the structural properties were evaluated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Both the electrical conductivity and the structural properties improved after the addition of MWNTs and were observed to be proportional to the increasing fractions in the nanocomposites. The shielding effectiveness of the nanocomposites was studied using a vector network analyzer (VNA) in a broad range of frequencies, X-band (8 to 12 GHz) and K-u-band (12 to 18 GHz) on toroidal samples. The shielding effectiveness significantly improved on addition of MWNTs, more in the case of p-MWNTs than in a-MWNTs. For instance, at a given fraction of MWNTs (3 wt%), PCL with p-MWNTs and a-MWNTs showed a shielding effectiveness of -32 dB and -29 dB, respectively. Moreover, it was observed that reflection was the primary mechanism of shielding at lower fractions of MWNTs, while absorption dominated at higher fractions in the composites. As one of the rationales of this work was to develop biodegradable EMI shielding materials to address the challenges concerning electronic waste, the effect of different MWNTs on the biodegradability of PCL composites was assessed through enzymatic degradation. The enzymatic degradation of the samples cut from the hot pressed films by bacterial lipase was investigated. It was noted that a-MWNTs exhibited almost similar degradation rate as the control PCL sample; however, p-MWNTs showed a slower degradation rate. This study demonstrates the potential use of PCL-MWNT composites as flexible, light weight and eco-friendly EMI shielding materials.

Photocatalytic degradation of estriol (E3) in an aqueous medium was investigated in the presence of TiO2 microcrystallized glass plates. To begin with, transparent glasses associated with the composition 0.4BaO-0.4TiO(2)-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated by the conventional melt-quench technique and subsequently subjected to controlled heat treatment at an appropriate temperature to grow anatase TiO2 microcrystals in the glass matrix. The fabricated samples were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to obtain thermal, structural and microstructural details. The photocatalytic activity of glass samples for estriol degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The limit of detection for estriol using fluorescence spectroscopy was analyzed. The results showed that microcrystallized TiO2 glass composites have more photocatalytic activity than as quenched glass. The degradation rate coefficient of microcrystallized TiO2 glass composite (334.54 min(-1) m(-2)) was found to be ten times larger than that of the as-quenched BTBO glasses (37.74 min(-1) m(-2)) implying that the anatase phase of TiO2 in BTBO glasses was responsible for high photocatalytic activity of estriol degradation. This study demonstrates the synthesis of TiO2 nanobelts using solution combustion derived TiO2 with enhanced photocatalytic activity for dye degradation and bacterial inactivation. Hydrothermal treatment of combustion synthesized TiO2 resulted in unique partially etched TiO2 nanobelts and Ag3PO4 was decorated using the co-precipitation method. The catalyst particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, BET surface area analysis, diffuse reflectance and electron microscopy. The photocatalytic properties of the composites of Ag3PO4 with pristine combustion synthesized TiO2 and commercial TiO2 under sunlight were compared. Therefore the studies conducted proved that the novel Ag3PO4/unique combustion synthesis derived TiO2 nanobelt composites exhibited extended light absorption, better charge transfer mechanism and higher generation of hydroxyl and hole radicals. These properties resulted in enhanced photodegradation of dyes and bacteria when compared to the commercial TiO2 nanocomposite. These findings have important implications in designing new photocatalysts for water purification.

Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out using lamb waves to study the degradation in adhesive joints made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) adherends and epoxy adhesive. Degradation was inducted into the epoxy adhesive by adding different amounts of polyvinyl alcohol. Fundamental lamb wave modes were excited in the CFRP adherends using piezoelectric transducer disks and made to propagate through the adhesive layer. The received waveforms across adhesive joints with varied degradation were studied. A 2D finite element model was utilized to verify the experimental results. Good correlation was observed between numerical and experimental results. Details of the investigation and results obtained are presented in the paper.
