Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral found in human bones and teeth. Its chemical formula is: Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2. In this project hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were doped with iron or europium to give the particles magnetic or fluorescent properties, respectively. The magnetic and fluorescent responses of these particles under externally applied magnetic fields has not yet been fully characterized.

BACKGROUND: Lymph node staging of bladder or prostate cancer using conventional imaging is limited. Newer approaches such as ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (USPIO) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) have inconsistent diagnostic accuracy and are difficult to interpret. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether combined USPIO and DW-MRI (USPIO-DW-MRI) improves staging of normal-sized lymph nodes in bladder and/or prostate cancer patients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one consecutive patients with bladder and/or prostate cancer were enrolled between May and October 2008. One patient was excluded secondary to bone metastases detected on DW-MRI with subsequent abstention from surgery. INTERVENTION: Patients preoperatively underwent 3-T MRI before and after administration of lymphotropic USPIO using conventional MRI sequences combined with DW-MRI. Surgery consisted of extended pelvic lymphadenectomy and resection of primary tumors. MEASUREMENTS: Diagnostic accuracies of the new combined USPIO-DW-MRI approach compared with the "classic" reading method evaluating USPIO images without and with DW-MRI versus histopathology were evaluated. Duration of the two reading methods was noted for each patient. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Diagnostic accuracy (90% per patient or per pelvic side) was comparable for the classic and the USPIO-DW-MRI reading method, while time of analysis with 80 min (range 45-180 min) for the classic and 13 min (range 5-90 min) for the USPIO-DW-MRI method was significantly shorter (p<0.0001). Interobserver agreement (three blinded readers) was high with a kappa value of 0.75 and 0.84, respectively. Histopathological analysis showed metastases in 26 of 802 analyzed lymph nodes (3.2%). Of these, 24 nodes (92%) were correctly diagnosed as positive on USPIO-DW-MRI. In two patients, one micrometastasis each (1.0x0.2 mm; 0.7x0.4 mm) was missed in all imaging studies. CONCLUSIONS: USPIO-DW-MRI is a fast and accurate method for detecting pelvic lymph node metastases, even in normal-sized nodes of bladder or prostate cancer patients.

Background Conventional cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has limited accuracy for lymph node (LN) staging in bladder and prostate cancer patients. Objective To prospectively assess the diagnostic accuracy of combined ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (USPIO) MRI and diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI in staging of normal-sized pelvic LNs in bladder and/or prostate cancer patients. Design, setting, and participants Examinations with 3-Tesla MRI 24–36 h after administration of USPIO using conventional MRI sequences combined with DW-MRI (USPIO-DW-MRI) were performed in 75 patients with clinically localised bladder and/or prostate cancer staged previously as N0 by conventional cross-sectional imaging. Combined USPIO-DW-MRI findings were analysed by three independent readers and correlated with histopathologic LN findings after extended pelvic LN dissection (PLND) and resection of primary tumours. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Sensitivity and specificity for LN status of combined USPIO-DW-MRI versus histopathologic findings were evaluated per patient (primary end point) and per pelvic side (secondary end point). Time required for combined USPIO-DW-MRI reading was assessed. Results and limitations At histopathologic analysis, 2993 LNs (median: 39 LNs; range: 17–68 LNs per patient) with 54 LN metastases (1.8%) were found in 20 of 75 (27%) patients. Per-patient sensitivity and specificity for detection of LN metastases by the three readers ranged from 65% to 75% and 93% to 96%, respectively; sensitivity and specificity per pelvic side ranged from 58% to 67% and 94% to 97%, respectively. Median reading time for the combined USPIO-DW-MRI images was 9 min (range: 3–26 min). A potential limitation is the absence of a node-to-node correlation of combined USPIO-DW-MRI and histopathologic analysis. Conclusions Combined USPIO-DW-MRI improves detection of metastases in normal-sized pelvic LNs of bladder and/or prostate cancer patients in a short reading time.

Magnetic polymer nanofibres intended for drug delivery have been designed and fabricated by electrospinning. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were successfully incorporated into electrospun nanofibre composites of two cellulose derivatives, dehydroxypropyl methyl cellulose phthalate (HPMCP) and cellulose acetate (CA), while indomethacin (IDN) and aspirin have been used as model drugs. The morphology of the neat and magnetic drug-loaded electrospun fibres and the release characteristics of the drugs in artificial intestinal juice were investigated. It was found that both types of electrospun composite nanofibres containing magnetite nanoparticles showed superparamagnetism at room temperature, and their saturation magnetisation and morphology depend on the Fe3O4 nanoparticle content. Furthermore, the presence of the magnetite nanoparticles did not affect the drug release profiles of the nanofibrous devices. The feasibility of controlled drug release to a target area of treatment under the guidance of an external magnetic field has also been demonstrated, showing the viability of the concept of magnetic drug-loaded polymeric composite nanofibres for magneto-chemotherapy.

On the mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States, Paleocene sands and silts are replaced during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) by the kaolinite-rich Marlboro Clay. The clay preserves abundant magnetite produced by magnetotactic bacteria and novel, presumptively eukaryotic, iron-biomineralizing microorganisms. Using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and electron microscopy, we map the magnetofossil distribution in the context of stratigraphy and carbon isotope data and identify three magnetic facies in the clay: one characterized by a mix of detrital particles and magnetofossils, a second with a higher magnetofossil-to-detrital ratio, and a third with only transient magnetofossils. The distribution of these facies suggests that suboxic conditions promoting magnetofossil production and preservation occurred throughout inner middle neritic sediments of the Salisbury Embayment but extended only transiently to outer neritic sediments and the flanks of the embayment. Such a distribution is consistent with the development of a system resembling a modern tropical river-dominated shelf.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are known for the unique properties conferred by their small size and have found wide application in food safety analyses. However, their high surface energy and strong magnetization often lead to aggregation, compromising their functions. In this study, iron oxide magnetic particles (MPs) over the range of nano to micro size were synthesized, from which particles with less aggregation and excellent magnetic properties were obtained. MPs were synthesized via three different hydrothermal procedures, using poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) of different molecular weight (Mw) as the stabilizer. The particle size, morphology, and magnetic properties of the MPs from these synthesis procedures were characterized and compared. Among the three syntheses, one-step hydrothermal synthesis demonstrated the highest yield and most efficient magnetic collection of the resulting PAA-coated magnetic microparticles (PAA-MMPs, >100 nm). Iron oxide content of these PAA-MMPs was around 90%, and the saturation magnetization ranged from 70.3 emu/g to 57.0 emu/g, depending on the Mw of PAA used. In this approach, the particles prepared using PAA with Mw of 100K g/mol exhibited super-paramagnetic behavior with ~65% lower coercivity and remanence compared to others. They were therefore less susceptible to aggregation and remained remarkably water-dispersible even after one-month storage. Three applications involving PAA-MMPs from one-step hydrothermal synthesis were explored: food proteins and enzymes immobilization, antibody conjugation for pathogen capture, and magnetic hydrogel film fabrication. These studies demonstrated their versatile functions as well as their potential applications in the food science area.

Luminescence properties of Eu(3+) doped germanate glasses containing either silver or gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for excitation at 405 nm. Enhanced emissions and luminescence quenching of the Eu(3+) transitions in the range from 570 to 720 nm were observed for samples having various concentrations of metallic NPs. Electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions that originate from the Eu(3+) level (5)D(0) exhibit large enhancement due to the presence of the metallic NPs. The results suggest that the magnetic response of rare-earth doped metal-dielectric composites at optical frequencies can be as strong as their electric response due to the confinement of the optical magnetic field. We analytically calculate the time-averaged electromagnetic energy stored inside a nondispersive magnetic isotropic cylinder that is obliquely irradiated by an electromagnetic plane wave. An expression for the optical-absorption efficiency in terms of the magnetic internal coefficients is also obtained. In the low absorption limit, we derive a relation between the normalized internal energy and the optical-absorption efficiency that is not affected by the magnetism and the incidence angle. This relation, indeed, seems to be independent of the shape of the scatterer. This universal aspect of the internal energy is connected to the transport velocity and consequently to the diffusion coefficient in the multiple scattering regime. Magnetism favors high internal energy for low size parameter cylinders, which leads to a low diffusion coefficient for electromagnetic propagation in 2D random media. Polylactic-co-glycolic nanocapsules, loaded with nanosized magnetic particles and Selol (a selenium-based anticancer drug), were successfully prepared by the precipitation method. Maghemite (gamma-Fe(2)O(3)) nanoparticles were incorporated into the nanocapsules using a highly stable ionic magnetic fluid sample. The obtained nanocapsules presented no agglomeration, negative surface charge while revealing a narrow monomodal size distribution. All the nanocapsule formulations exhibited a good physical stability at 4 degrees C during 3 month storage period. The in vitro antitumoral activity of Selol-magnetic nanocapsules was assessed using a murine melanoma cell line. The influence of nanocapsules on cell viability was investigated by spectrophotometric assay. The results demonstrated that Selol-loaded magnetic nanocapsules (at 100 mu g/ml/5 x 10(9) particle/ml) showed antitumoral activity of 50% on melanoma cells (absence of magnetic field). These results clearly indicate that the loaded nanocapsules represent a novel and promising magnetic drug delivery system suitable for cancer treatment via the active drug and magnetohyperthermia. Consider that an incident plane wave is scattered by a homogeneous and isotropic magnetic sphere of finite radius. We determine, by means of the rigorous Mie theory, an exact expression for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within this particle. For magnetic scatterers, we find that the value of the average internal energy in the resonance picks is much larger than the one associated with a scatterer with the same nonmagnetic medium properties. This result is valid even, and especially, for low size parameter values. Expressions for the contributions of the radial and angular field components to the internal energy are determined. For the analytical study of the weak absorption regime, we derive an exact expression for the absorption cross section in terms of the magnetic Mie internal coefficients. We stress that, although the electromagnetic scattering by particles is a well-documented topic, almost no attention has been devoted to magnetic scatterers. Our aim is to provide some new analytical results, which can be used for magnetic particles, and emphasize the unusual properties of the magnetic scatters, which could be important in some applications. Magnetic fields of intensities similar to those in our galaxy are also observed in high redshift galaxies, where a mean field dynamo would not have had time to produce them. Therefore, a primordial origin is indicated. It has been suggested that magnetic fields were created at various primordial eras: during inflation, the electroweak phase transition, the quark-hadron phase transition (QHPT), during the formation of the first objects, and during reionization. We suggest here that the large-scale fields similar to mu G, observed in galaxies at both high and low redshifts by Faraday rotation measurements (FRMs), have their origin in the electromagnetic fluctuations that naturally occurred in the dense hot plasma that existed just after the QHPT. We evolve the predicted fields to the present time. The size of the region containing a coherent magnetic field increased due to the fusion of smaller regions. Magnetic fields (MFs) similar to 10 mu G over a comoving similar to 1 pc region are predicted at redshift z similar to 10. These fields are orders of magnitude greater than those predicted in previous scenarios for creating primordial magnetic fields. Line-of-sight average MFs similar to 10(-2) mu G, valid for FRMs, are obtained over a 1 Mpc comoving region at the redshift z similar to 10. In the collapse to a galaxy (comoving size similar to 30 kpc) at z similar to 10, the fields are amplified to similar to 10 mu G. This indicates that the MFs created immediately after the QHPT (10(-4) s), predicted by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, could be the origin of the similar to mu G fields observed by FRMs in galaxies at both high and low redshifts. Our predicted MFs are shown to be consistent with present observations. We discuss the possibility that the predicted MFs could cause non-negligible deflections of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays and help create the observed isotropic distribution of their incoming directions. We also discuss the importance of the volume average magnetic field predicted by our model in producing the first stars and in reionizing the Universe.
