Komunikabide elektronikoak, multimedia eta elkarreragileak, errealitate bihurtu dira duela zenbait urte. 1993-1994tik orain arte milaka komunikabide, aldizkari, irrati edo telebisten bertsio birtual asko eta, era berean, zibergunerako berariaz pentsatutako informazio-bide berriak Internet sarean atzitu ahal dira. Bizitza laburra badu ere, kazetaritza elektronikoak komunikabide berriez hitz egitea ahalbidetzen duten joera batzuk agertu ditu dagoeneko. Modulu honen bitartez komunikabide elektronikok garatzen ari diren ezaugarrien eta kazetaritza elektronikoari aplikatu ahal zaizkion eta aplikatzen zaizkion ikerketa-eremu akademikoen berri jakinarazi nahi da soil-soilik; horrez gainera, erreferentzia bibliografiko batzuk (bai fisikoak, liburu eta artikulu inprimatuak, bai birtualak, helbide elektronikoak, informazioa aurkitzeko) emango dira, gaia interesatzen zaienei laguntzeko asmoarekin. Azken batean, ziberguneko kazetaritzaren barrura sartzeko balio digun “aferaren egoera” hutsaz ari gara.

With the advancement in network bandwidth and computing power, multimedia systems have become a popular means for information delivery. However, general principles of system testing cannot be directly applied to testing of multimedia systems on account of their stringent temporal and synchronization requirements. In particular, few studies have been made on the stress testing of multimedia systems with respect to their temporal requirements under resource saturation. Stress testing is important because erroneous behavior is most likely to occur under resource saturation. This paper presents an automatable method of test case generation for the stress testing of multimedia systems. It adapts constraint solving techniques to generate test cases that lead to potential resource saturation in a multimedia system. Coverage of the test cases is defined upon the reachability graph of a multimedia system. The proposed stress testing technique is supported by tools and has been successfully applied to a real-life commercial multimedia system. Although our technique focuses on the stress testing of multimedia systems, the underlying issues and concepts are applicable to other types of real-time systems.

Traffic policing and bandwidth management strategies at the User Network Interface (UNI) of an ATM network are investigated by simulation. The network is assumed to transport real time (RT) traffic like voice and video as well as non-real time (non-RT) data traffic. The proposed policing function, called the super leaky bucket (S-LB), is based on the leaky bucket (LB), but handles the three types of traffic differently according to their quality of service (QoS) requirements. Separate queues are maintained for RT and non-RT traffic. They are normally served alternately, but if the number of RT cells exceeds a threshold, it gets non-pre-emptive priority. Further increase of the RT queue causes low priority cells to be discarded. Non-RT cells are buffered and the sources are throttled back during periods of congestion. The simulations clearly demonstrate the advantages of the proposed strategy in providing improved levels of service (delay, jitter and loss) for all types of traffic.

The scalability of a computer system is its response to growth. It is also depended on its hardware, its operating system and the applications it is running. Most distributed systems technology today still depends on bus-based shared memory which do not scale well, and systems based on the grid or hypercube scheme requires significantly less connections than a full inter-connection that would exhibit a quadratic growth rate. The rapid convergence of mobile communication, digital broadcasting and network infrastructures calls for rich multimedia content that is adaptive and responsive to the needs of individuals, businesses and the public organisations. This paper will discuss the emergence of mobile Multimedia systems and provides an overview of the issues regarding design and delivery of multimedia content to mobile devices.
