A microscopic theory of equilibrium solvation and solvation dynamics of a classical, polar, solute molecule in dipolar solvent is presented. Density functional theory is used to explicitly calculate the polarization structure around a solvated ion. The calculated solvent polarization structure is different from the continuum model prediction in several respects. The value of the polarization at the surface of the ion is less than the continuum value. The solvent polarization also exhibits small oscillations in space near the ion. We show that, under certain approximations, our linear equilibrium theory reduces to the nonlocal electrostatic theory, with the dielectric function (c(k)) of the liquid now wave vector (k) dependent. It is further shown that the nonlocal electrostatic estimate of solvation energy, with a microscopic c(k), is close to the estimate of linearized equilibrium theories of polar liquids. The study of solvation dynamics is based on a generalized Smoluchowski equation with a mean-field force term to take into account the effects of intermolecular interactions. This study incorporates the local distortion of the solvent structure near the ion and also the effects of the translational modes of the solvent molecules. The latter contribution, if significant, can considerably accelerate the relaxation of solvent polarization and can even give rise to a long time decay that agrees with the continuum model prediction. The significance of these results is discussed.

A molecular theory of collective orientational relaxation of dipolar molecules in a dense liquid is presented. Our work is based on a generalized, nonlinear, Smoluchowski equation (GSE) that includes the effects of intermolecular interactions through a mean‐field force term. The effects of translational motion of the liquid molecules on the orientational relaxation is also included self‐consistently in the GSE. Analytic expressions for the wave‐vector‐dependent orientational correlation functions are obtained for one component, pure liquid and also for binary mixtures. We find that for a dipolar liquid of spherical molecules, the correlation function ϕ(k,t) for l=1, where l is the rank of the spherical harmonics, is biexponential. At zero wave‐vector, one time constant becomes identical with the dielectric relaxation time of the polar liquid. The second time constant is the longitudinal relaxation time, but the contribution of this second component is small. We find that polar forces do not affect the higher order correlation functions (l>1) of spherical dipolar molecules in a linearized theory. The expression of ϕ(k,t) for a binary liquid is a sum of four exponential terms. We also find that the wave‐vector‐dependent relaxation times depend strongly on the microscopic structure of the dense liquid. At intermediate wave vectors, the translational diffusion greatly accelerates the rate of orientational relaxation. The present study indicates that one must pay proper attention to the microscopic structure of the liquid while treating the translational effects. An analysis of the nonlinear terms of the GSE is also presented. An interesting coupling between the number density fluctuation and the orientational fluctuation is uncovered.

The static response of thin, wrinkled membranes is studied using both a tension field approximation based on plane stress conditions and a 3D nonlinear elasticityformulation, discretized through 8-noded Cosserat point elements. While the tension field approach only obtains the wrinkled/slack regions and at best a measure of the extent of wrinkliness, the 3D elasticity solution provides, in principle, the deformed shape of a wrinkled/slack membrane. However, since membranes barely resist compression, the discretized and linearized system equations via both the approaches are ill-conditioned and solutions could thus be sensitive to discretizations errors as well as other sources of noises/imperfections. We propose a regularized, pseudo-dynamical recursion scheme that provides a sequence of updates, which are almost insensitive to theregularizing term as well as the time step size used for integrating the pseudo-dynamical form. This is borne out through several numerical examples wherein the relative performance of the proposed recursion scheme vis-a-vis a regularized Newton strategy is compared. The pseudo-time marching strategy, when implemented using 3D Cosserat point elements, also provides a computationally cheaper, numerically accurate and simpler alternative to that using geometrically exact shell theories for computing large deformations of membranes in the presence of wrinkles. A fuzzy system is developed using a linearized performance model of the gas turbine engine for performing gas turbine fault isolation from noisy measurements. By using a priori information about measurement uncertainties and through design variable linking, the design of the fuzzy system is posed as an optimization problem with low number of design variables which can be solved using the genetic algorithm in considerably low amount of computer time. The faults modeled are module faults in five modules: fan, low pressure compressor, high pressure compressor, high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine. The measurements used are deviations in exhaust gas temperature, low rotor speed, high rotor speed and fuel flow from a base line 'good engine'. The genetic fuzzy system (GFS) allows rapid development of the rule base if the fault signatures and measurement uncertainties change which happens for different engines and airlines. In addition, the genetic fuzzy system reduces the human effort needed in the trial and error process used to design the fuzzy system and makes the development of such a system easier and faster. A radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is also used to preprocess the measurements before fault isolation. The RBFNN shows significant noise reduction and when combined with the GFS leads to a diagnostic system that is highly robust to the presence of noise in data. Showing the advantage of using a soft computing approach for gas turbine diagnostics.

In computational mechanics, finite rotations are often represented by rotation vectors. Rotation vector increments corresponding to different tangent: spaces are generally related by a linear operator, known as the tangential transformation T. In this note, we derive the higher order terms that are usually left out in linear relation. The exact nonlinear relation is also presented. Errors via the linearized T are numerically estimated. While the concept of T arises out of the nonlinear characteristics of the rotation manifold, it has been derived via tensor analysis in the context of computational mechanics (Cardona and Geradin, 1988). We investigate the operator T from a Lie group perspective, which provides a better insight and a 1-1 correspondence between approaches based on tensor analysis and the standard matrix Lie group theory. The concept of short range strong spin-two (f) field (mediated by massive f-mesons) and interacting directly with hadrons was introduced along with the infinite range (g) field in early seventies. In the present review of this growing area (often referred to as strong gravity) we give a general relativistic treatment in terms of Einstein-type (non-abelian gauge) field equations with a coupling constant Gf reverse similar, equals 1038 GN (GN being the Newtonian constant) and a cosmological term λf ƒ;μν (ƒ;μν is strong gravity metric and λf not, vert, similar 1028 cm− is related to the f-meson mass). The solutions of field equations linearized over de Sitter (uniformly curves) background are capable of having connections with internal symmetries of hadrons and yielding mass formulae of SU(3) or SU(6) type. The hadrons emerge as de Sitter “microuniverses” intensely curved within (radius of curvature not, vert, similar10−14 cm).The study of spinor fields in the context of strong gravity has led to Heisenberg's non-linear spinor equation with a fundamental length not, vert, similar2 × 10−14 cm. Furthermore, one finds repulsive spin-spin interaction when two identical spin-Image particles are in parallel configuration and a connection between weak interaction and strong gravity.Various other consequences of strong gravity embrace black hole (solitonic) solutions representing hadronic bags with possible quark confinement, Regge-like relations between spins and masses, connection with monopoles and dyons, quantum geons and friedmons, hadronic temperature, prevention of gravitational singularities, providing a physical basis for Dirac's two metric and large numbers hypothesis and projected unification with other basic interactions through extended supergravity.

The energy input to giant molecular clouds is recalculated, using the proper linearized equations of motion, including the Coriolis force and allowing for changes in the guiding center. Perturbation theory yields a result in the limit of distant encounters and small initial epicyclic amplitudes. Direct integration of the motion equations allows the strong encounter regime to be studied. The present perturbation theory result differs by a factor of order unity from that of Jog and Ostriker (1988). The result of present numerical integrations for the 2D (planar) velocity dispersion is presented. The accretion rate for a molecular cloud in the Galactic disk is calculated.

The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability has been investigated for the magnetopause boundary‐layer region by the linearized method. The plasma in magnetosheath and magnetopause is assumed to be semi‐infinitely extended homogeneous, nondissipative, and incompressible. It is observed that, if one relation of two plasma speeds on the two sides of the magnetopause, wave number, and boundary‐layer thickness exceeds a certain threshold, the instability sets in. This new analytically sufficient criterion for excitation of instability in the three‐layer plasma flow generalizes the corresponding Chandrasekhar’s instability criterion for two‐layer plasma flow. The known results have been recovered and modified, the new results have been discovered. It is proved that the velocity threshold for the onset of instability is low when the magnitude of the magnetosheath and boundary‐layer region magnetic field and the angle between them are small. Also the threshold depends on the direction of plasma flow. The following results are observed numerically. The growth of the instability is sensitive to the magnetic field direction in the magnetosheath. A slight variation in the magnetic field direction in the second region can substantially change the relative velocity threshold for instability. When the ratio of the density of the second and third layer (magnetosphere) increases or that of the first and third layer decreases, the threshold decreases. Apart from this a necessary criterion for instability is obtained for a particular case.

Torsional interactions can occur due to the speed input Power System Stabilizer (PSS) that are primarily used to damp low frequency oscillations. The solution to this problem can be either in the form of providing a torsional filter or developing an alternate signal for the PSS. This paper deals with the formulation of a linearized state space model of the system and study of the interactions using eigenvalue analysis. The effects of the parameters of PSS and control signals on the damping of torsional modes are investigated.

Utilizing the commutativity property of the Cartesian coordinate differential operators arising in the boundary conditions associated with the propagation of surface water waves against a vertical cliff, under the assumptions of linearized theory, the problem of obliquely incident surface waves is considered for solution. The case of normal incidence, handled by previous workers follow as a particular limiting case of the present problem, which exhibits a source/sink type behavior of the velocity potential at the shore-line. An independent method of attack is also presented to handle the case of normal incidence.

We present a study of the growth of local, nonaxisymmetric perturbations in gravitationally coupled stars and gas in a differentially rotating galactic disk. The stars and gas are treated as two isothermal fluids of different velocity dispersions, with the stellar velocity dispersion being greater than that for the gas. We examine the physical effects of inclusion of a low-velocity dispersion component (gas) on the growth of non-axisymmetric perturbations in both stars and gas, as done for the axisymmetric case by Jog & Solomon. The amplified perturbations in stars and gas constitute trailing, material, spiral features which may be identified with the local spiral features seen in all spiral galaxies. The formulation of the two-fluid equations closely follows the one-fluid treatment by Goldreich & Lynden-Bell. The local, linearized perturbation equations in the sheared frame are solved to obtain the results for a temporary growth via swing amplification. The problem is formulated in terms of five dimensionless parameters-namely, the Q-factors for stars and gas, respectively; the gas mass fraction; the shearing rate in the galactic disk; and the length scale of perturbation. By using the observed values of these parameters, we obtain the amplifications and the pitch angles for features in stars and gas for dynamically distinct cases, as applicable for different regions of spiral galaxies. A real galaxy consisting of stars and gas may display growth of nonaxisymmetric perturbations even when it is stable against axisymmetric perturbations and/or when either fluid by itself is stable against non-axisymmetric perturbations. Due to its lower velocity dispersion, the gas exhibits a higher amplification than do the stars, and the amplified gas features are slightly more tightly wound than the stellar features. When the gas contribution is high, the stellar amplification and the range of pitch angles over which it can occur are both increased, due to the gravitational coupling between the two fluids. Thus, the two-fluid scheme can explain the origin of the broad spiral arms in the underlying old stellar populations of galaxies, as observed by Schweizer and Elmegreen & Elmegreen. The arms are predicted to be broader in gas-rich galaxies, as is indeed seen for example in M33. In the linear regime studied here, the arm contrast is shown to increase with radius in the inner Galaxy, in agreement with observations of external galaxies by Schweizer. These results follow directly due to the inclusion of gas in the problem.

The forced oscillations due to a point forcing effect in an infinite or contained, inviscid, incompressible, rotating, stratified fluid are investigated taking into account the density variation in the inertia terms in the linearized equations of motion. The solutions are obtained in closed form using generalized Fourier transforms. Solutions are presented for a medium bounded by a finite cylinder when the oscillatory forcing effect is acting at a point on the axis of the cylinder. In both the unbounded and bounded case, there exist characteristic cones emanating from the point of application of the force on which either the pressure or its derivatives are discontinuous. The perfect resonance existing at certain frequencies in an unbounded or bounded homogeneous fluid is avoided in the case of a confined stratified fluid.

The presence of vacuum inside the cavity of a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) causes the membrane of the device (which is the main vibrating structural component) to deflect towards the substrate, thereby causing a reduction in the effective gap height. This reduction causes a drastic decrease in the pull-in voltage of the device limiting the DC bias at which the device can be operated for maximum efficiency. In addition, this initial deflection of the membrane due to atmospheric pressure, causes significant stress stiffening of the the membrane, changing the natural frequency of the device significantly from the design value. To circumvent the deleterious effects of vacuum in the sealed cavity, we investigate the possibility of using sealed CMUT cavities with air inside at ambient pressure. In order to estimate the transducer loss due to the presence of air in the sealed cavity, we evaluate the resulting damping and determine the forces acting on the vibrating membrane resulting from the compression of the trapped air film. We take into account the flexure of the top vibrating membrane instead of assuming the motion to be parallel-plate like. Towards this end, we solve the linearized Reynolds equation using the appropriate boundary conditions and show that, for a sealed CMUT cavity, the presence of air does not cause any squeeze film damping.

We briefly review the growth and structural properties of View the MathML source bulk single crystals and View the MathML source epitaxial films grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. Temperature-dependent transport measurements on these samples are then correlated with the information obtained from structural (XRD, TEM, SEM) and optical (FTIR absorption) investigations. The temperature dependence of mobility and the Hall coefficient are theoretically modelled by exactly solving the linearized Boltzmann transport equation by inversion of the collision matrix and the relative role of various scattering mechanisms in limiting the low temperature and View the MathML source mobility is estimated. Finally, the first observation of Shubnikov oscillations in InAsSb is discussed.
