The activation area and activation enthalpy are determined as a function of stress and temperature for alpha titanium. The results indicated that plastic flow below about 700°K occurs by a single thermally activated mechanism. Activation area determined by differential-stress creep tests falls in the range 80−8b2 and does not systematically depend on the impurity content. The total activation enthalpy derived from the temperature and strain-rate dependence of flow stress is 1.15 eV. The experimental data support a lattice hardening mechanism as controlling the low-temperature deformation in alpha titanium.

The proton second moment M2 and spin-lattice relaxation time T1 have been measured in ammonium tribromo stannate (NH4SnBr3) in the temperature range 77–300 K, to determine the ammonium dynamics. The continuous wave signal is strong and narrow at 77 and 300 K but has revealed an interesting intensity anomaly between 210 and 125 K. T1 shows a maximum (13 s) around 220 K. No minimum in the T1 vs 1000/T plot was observed down to 77 K. M2 and T1 results are interpreted in terms of NH+4 ion dynamics. The activation energy Ea for NH+4 ion reorientation is estimated to be 1.4 kcal mol−1.

The proton second moment (M2) and spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) have been measured in (NH4)2ZnBr4 in the range 77-300 K. The room-temperature spectrum shows a structure which disappears around 243 K. The signal is strong and narrow even at 77 K. Proton T1 shows a maximum at 263 K, caused by spin rotation interaction and decreases with decreasing temperature till 235 K, where it shows a sudden increase. Below 235 K, again it decreases and shows a slope change around 216.5 K (reported Tc). From 216.5 K, T1 decreases continuously without exhibiting any minimum down to 77 K. The narrow line at 77 K, and absence of a T1 minimum down to 77 K indicate the possibility of quantum mechanical tunnelling in this system. Motional parameters such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor have been evaluated for the reorientational motion of the NH+4 ion.

In the theoretical treatments of the dynamics of solvation of a newly created ion in a dipolar solvent, the self-motion of the solute is usually ignored. Recently, it has been shown that for a light ion the translational motion of the ion can significantly enhance its own rate of solvation. Therefore, solvation itself may not be the rate determining step in the equilibration. Instead, the rate determining step is the search of the low energy configuration which serves to localize the light ion. In this article a microscopic calculation of the probability distribution of the interaction energy of the nascent charge with the dipolar solvent molecules is presented in order to address this problem of solute trapping. It is found that to a good approximation, this distribution is Gaussian and the second moment of this distribution is exactly equal to the half of its own solvation energy. It is shown that this is in excellent agreement with the simulation results that are available for the model Brownian dipolar lattice and for liquid acetonitrile. If the distortion of the solvent by the ion is negligible then the same relation gives the energy distribution for the solvated ion, with the average centered at the final equilibrium solvation energy. These results are expected to be useful in understanding various chemical processes in dipolar liquids. Another interesting outcome of the present study is a simple dynamic argument that supports Onsager's ''inverse snow-ball'' conjecture of solvation of a light ion. A simple derivation of the semi-phenomenological relation between the solvation time correlation function and the single particle orientation, reported recently by Maroncelli et al. (J. Phys. Chem. 97 (1993) 13), is also presented.

The dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate) in toluene solution has been examined by C-13 and proton relaxation. C-13 spin-lattice relaxation time and nuclear Overhauser enhancement measurements were carried out as a function of temperature at 50.3 and 100.6 MHz. The spin-lattice relaxation times for backbone protons were measured at different temperatures at 200 MHz. The relaxation data have been analyzed using the Hall-Weber-Helfand (HWH) model, which describes backbone dynamics in terms of conformational transitions and the Dejean-Laupretre-Monnerie (DLM) model, which includes bond librations in addition to conformational transitions. The parameters obtained from the analysis of C-13 relaxation data were utilized to predict the proton relaxation data. The DLM model was found to be more successful in reproducing the experimental results. To study the influence of libration further, proton relaxation data for poly(vinyl acetate) over a wider range of temperature reported in the literature were analyzed by these two models. The DLM model could reproduce the experimental data at all temperatures whereas the HWH model was found to be successful only in accounting for the experimental data at high temperatures. The results demonstrate the importance of including the librational mode in the description of the backbone dynamics in polymers.

Poly(alpha-methylstyrene peroxide) has been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra are shown to reveal the stereochemical features and the endgroups in the peroxide chain. The preliminary studies on the chain dynamics of the polyperoxide chain has been done by measuring the spin-lattice relaxation times (T-1) of the main chain as well as the side chain carbons. It has been shown from the dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation times that the polyperoxide chain is more flexible compared to the corresponding hydrocarbon-backbone analog.

We explore the salient features of the `Kitaev ladder', a two-legged ladder version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, by mapping it to a one-dimensional fermionic p-wave superconducting system. We examine the connections between spin phases and topologically non-trivial phases of non-interacting fermionic systems, demonstrating the equivalence between the spontaneous breaking of global Z(2) symmetry in spin systems and the existence of isolated Majorana modes. In the Kitaev ladder, we investigate topological properties of the system in different sectors characterized by the presence or absence of a vortex in each plaquette of the ladder. We show that vortex patterns can yield a rich parameter space for tuning into topologically non-trivial phases. We introduce and employ a new topological invariant for explicitly determining the presence of zero energy Majorana modes at the boundaries of such phases. Finally, we discuss dynamic quenching between topologically non-trivial phases in the Kitaev ladder and, in particular, the post-quench dynamics governed by tuning through a quantum critical point.

A many-body theory of paramagnetic Kondo insulators is described, focusing specifically on single-particle dynamics, scattering rates, dc transport and optical conductivities. This is achieved by development of a non-perturbative local moment approach to the symmetric periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our natural focus is the strong-coupling, Kondo lattice regime, in particular the resultant 'universal' scaling behaviour in terms of the single, exponentially small low-energy scale characteristic of the problem. Dynamics/transport on all relevant (ω, T)-scales are considered, from the gapped/activated behaviour characteristic of the low-temperature insulator through to explicit connection to single-impurity physics at high ω and/or T; and for optical conductivities emphasis is given to the nature of the optical gap, the temperature scale responsible for its destruction and the consequent clear distinction between indirect and direct gap scales. Using scaling, explicit comparison is also made to experimental results for dc transport and optical conductivities of Ce3Bi4Pt3, SmB6 and YbB12. Good agreement is found, even quantitatively; and a mutually consistent picture of transport and optics results.

We report the temperature evolution of coherently excited acoustic and optical phonon dynamics in the superconducting iron pnictide single crystal Ca(Fe0.944Co0.056)(2)As-2 across the spin density wave transition at T-SDW similar to 85 K and the superconducting transition at T-SC similar to 20 K. The strain pulse propagation model applied to the generation of the acoustic phonons yields the temperature dependence of the optical constants, and longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the temperature range from 3.1 K to 300 K. The frequency and dephasing times of the phonons show anomalous temperature dependence below T-SC indicating a coupling of these low-energy excitations with the Cooper-pair quasiparticles. A maximum in the amplitude of the acoustic modes at T similar to 170 is seen, attributed to spin fluctuations and strong spin-lattice coupling before T-SDW. Copyright (c) EPLA, 2012

We use a dual gated device structure to introduce a gate-tuneable periodic potential in a GaAs/AlGaAs two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Using only a suitable choice of gate voltages we can controllably alter the potential landscape of the bare 2DEG, inducing either a periodic array of antidots or quantum dots. Antidots are artificial scattering centers, and therefore allow for a study of electron dynamics. In particular, we show that the thermovoltage of an antidot lattice is particularly sensitive to the relative positions of the Fermi level and the antidot potential. A quantum dot lattice, on the other hand, provides the opportunity to study correlated electron physics. We find that its current-voltage characteristics display a voltage threshold, as well as a power law scaling, indicative of collective Coulomb blockade in a disordered background.

Extensive molecular dynamics studies of 13 different silica polymorphs are reported in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble with the Parrinello-Rahman variable shape simulation cell. The van Beest-Kramer-van Santen (BKS) potential is shown to predict lattice parameters for most phases within 2%-3% accuracy, as well as the relative stabilities of different polymorphs in agreement with experiment. Enthalpies of high-density polymorphs - CaCl2-type, alpha-PbO2-type, and pyrite-type for which no experimental data are available as yet, are predicted here. Further, the calculated enthalpies exhibit two distinct regimes as a function of molar volume-for low and medium-density polymorphs, it is almost independent of volume, while for high-pressure phases a steep dependence is seen. A detailed analysis indicates that the increased short-range contributions to enthalpy in the high-density phases arise not only from an increased coordination number of silicon but also shorter Si-O bond lengths. Our results indicate that amorphous phases of silica exhibit better optimization of short-range interactions than crystalline phases at the same density while the magnitude of Coulombic contributions is lower in the amorphous phase. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations require imposition of non-periodic boundary conditions (NPBCs) that seamlessly account for the effect of the truncated bulk region on the simulated MD region. Standard implementation of specular boundary conditions in such simulations results in spurious density and force fluctuations near the domain boundary and is therefore inappropriate for coupled atomistic-continuum calculations. In this work, we present a novel NPBC model that relies on boundary atoms attached to a simple cubic lattice with soft springs to account for interactions from particles which would have been present in an untruncated full domain treatment. We show that the proposed model suppresses the unphysical fluctuations in the density to less than 1% of the mean while simultaneously eliminating spurious oscillations in both mean and boundary forces. The model allows for an effective coupling of atomistic and continuum solvers as demonstrated through multiscale simulation of boundary driven singular flow in a cavity. The geometric flexibility of the model enables straightforward extension to nonplanar complex domains without any adverse effects on dynamic properties such as the diffusion coefficient. We consider a quantum particle, moving on a lattice with a tight-binding Hamiltonian, which is subjected to measurements to detect its arrival at a particular chosen set of sites. The projective measurements are made at regular time intervals tau, and we consider the evolution of the wave function until the time a detection occurs. We study the probabilities of its first detection at some time and, conversely, the probability of it not being detected (i.e., surviving) up to that time. We propose a general perturbative approach for understanding the dynamics which maps the evolution operator, which consists of unitary transformations followed by projections, to one described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. For some examples of a particle moving on one-and two-dimensional lattices with one or more detection sites, we use this approach to find exact expressions for the survival probability and find excellent agreement with direct numerical results. A mean-field model with hopping between all pairs of sites and detection at one site is solved exactly. For the one-and two-dimensional systems, the survival probability is shown to have a power-law decay with time, where the power depends on the initial position of the particle. Finally, we show an interesting and nontrivial connection between the dynamics of the particle in our model and the evolution of a particle under a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with a large absorbing potential at some sites.
